Let me know if you guys like this format, meaning me talking off the top of my head about different topics. If so Ill start doing this once or twice per month in addition to tutorials and presentations. Don't worry I will not become a "coding channel" that does not write any code lol. Seems there are so many of those.

Awesome video. It's so true, people ask me all the time what programming and coding is like. They think it's like what they see in the Matrix with binary code flowing down the screen and being able to read it or like Elliot from Mr. Robot just typing away on a keyboard. I'm like nope, it's more thinking than anything else. I spend more time mapping out my ideas than I do actually coding. Then I research to see if there's a solution similar to my idea and if so, how can I refactor it to suit my needs. Mastering the art of using Google is key to learning how to code.
I like the various formats of your videos. The scripted videos are ideal for explaining complex material. The talking head type videos are good for more general conversation type videos. Mixing it up is a good thing.

yes Brad these kind of format should be done at least once per month if you have any such topic as this one, this is very critical issue for beginners and i've gone through already, if this format was there two years ago may be i saved my time where i doubt my self and i was about to quit.
    conclusion of the video:
    * Memorize concept only.
    * Core concepts learned once and applied to any language.
    * Languages/Libraries/Frameworks have there own syntax but concepts are same.
    * Make personal docs for syntax reference.
    * Project based tutorials are very helpful to apply the concept on your application.
    * Adding my personal point: i used to save the information for future that i hardly find on Google to solve problems.
    Correct me if I'm wrong.
Brad i have seen people quit programming because of this issue and i believe it will gonna help a lot of people out there,
    Thanks for sharing your experience!
i like you cute kid once i saw him in your video i wanna hug him❤

Now I have lots of files saved "under my pillow" and I reuse the code from older projects, keeping an eye to them and upgrading when they need.

Keep doing this type of stuff. It really helps us developers that learned 100% by just doing and no formal training understand if we're doing the right things or what others are doing. I would love to see something on basic programming. Something with use cases for the different constructs so we know when we should be using the different tools that programming languages provide.

    Brilliant video.
I work with PHP and MySQL and I'm forever having to look stuff up. It took half a year of looking up and using the fetch_assoc function to pull rows from the database and output them into a table before I could remember the syntax off the top of my head.
I'm currently learning Laravel and I have to constantly copy & paste or look up the syntax for routes.
Like you say, learning the principles behind the code so you know how to use properly is far more important.
Anyway, it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one :D

This is really good topic! Waiting for this series of how to learn concepts and concepts itself. Syntax is pretty simple. But most hardest part is how to combine those syntax pieces together into something meaningfull. I found that by learning concepts i learn programming more efficient. For example now i would like to know steps and concept on how to create nested tree structure (frontend). Not how to code it, but what building blocks and concepts i should look for. Or... how to validate (text/email/float) import into DB 1M rows of CSV file in performant way. I have no idea where to start. Do i need to save that file on the server temp directory first? How to match db columns with CSV columns. When to do row cell validating? Do i need to split that file in some parts and to process every part in paralel for better performance? I just post this as example what im looking for as newbie. Basically, i know how to code... but i dont know how to construct real life stuff. Like.. i know what car is and how to drive it and how to tie bolts... but i dont know what pieces i need to assamble this car.

I was really worried at first that I don't remember all the concepts that are taught in a programming course but this video calmed me and motivated me to focus on learning the logic behind them not every character that's being typed :D

  • @AS-zw4lk
    @AS-zw4lk 6 лет назад +1

Thanks for the discussion Brad. I also think it's important to note that cultivating ideas is necessary so you can apply your coding skills to projects. Do other things besides coding! Make things. Solve problems. Listen. Be open to the unexpected lessons in all things. Don't be too proud - even the simplest things can teach you something. Just because you can type doesn't mean you can create a novel. Typing can help but you must dream, dream, dream! And you must also do. Like you mentioned Brad, practice being resourceful - know how to find what you need to meet your goals. Don't rely on other people to find out the answers you need. That's lazy and self defeating. If you're dreaming big enough - the answer isn't OUT there! Try to be kind to yourself - realize that you already know a lot. You're never starting from zero. If you must learn that new, trendy framework - understand the problems it was created to address and decide how (or if) it will help you (before you invest your precious energy).

Hello Brad! A week ago I've just started my path into coding. First of all I find your videos very helpful and full of insights, above all the real-life examples you give. In this video you mentioned about checking the documentation of a language before taking any tutorial/course. Do you recommend any special web site where to check this? Right now I am learning HTML/HTML5 and when I google "HTML documentation" the first results were "devdocs.com" and MDN, are they good ones?

    Things to memorize:
    1) How to create objects and address properties and keys
    2) How to manipulate arrays
    3) How to write a variety of loops
    Things not to memorize:
    1) Boilerplate
    2) Every single built-in method
    3) Entire programs

Way to burst the illusion Brad!
In all seriousness, I am a code horder. A good chunk of my js/node/npm (MEAN/MERN) notes and code snippets are actually from some of your content.
    Thanks for all that.
Along these lines though, the MEAN/MERN world is changing so fast that my snippets get broken a lot. I have a lot of C/C++ code that is old as dirt and I rarely find a library that has changed and broken it or similar. To a lesser extend Python code snippets keep well, but Angular, and such, even npm and package names, changes very very fast in breaking ways. I get it. The environment is maturing and it's super popular, and we are getting so much great stuff because of it, but if you don't work in it every day, it's tough to keep things relevant.
I love your idea of a generic "programming" course. I personally would be interested in hearing you talk about data structures, and common algorithms and such.

Thanks!
