Saving a NEGLECTED yard for a homeowner with POOR HEALTH!

  • Once again, I was driving around looking for a good yard (or bad) to do a youtube transformation video. I knocked on this random person's door and offered to do a free makeover, only to be declined. So I gave the homeowner my business card and said if he changes his mind to give me a call. A few weeks later, I received a call asking if I was still interested in the cleanup. As you can see, I was definitely interested in doing this one. The homeowner is actually undergoing treatment for cancer and hasn't been able to look after his garden for some time, as the treatment is quite severs and leaves you with little energy to do everyday things. Hopefully, with this little bit of help, he will be able to maintain his yard moving forward and make his life a bit easier. This cleanup will only be on the front of the property. All up, I spent around 12.5 hours on this job, with 3 trips to the landfill.

    FAQ's:
    Q: Where are you located?
A: I am from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 🦘.
Q: Do you worry about snakes?
A: I have never even seen a snake in over 5 years on the job.
Q: Which equipment do you use?
A: Mostly STIHL power equipment (battery and petrol) and commercial Honda self-propelled mowers.
Q: How much do the jobs cost?
A: Sorry, I prefer not to talk about costs.
Q: Why don't you use tarps instead of bins?
A: Tarps are too difficult to move through small spaces and lift into the trailer. The same for wheelbarrows, they are only good for unloading the trailer!
Q: Why are the hot water cylinders outside?
A: I would say it's because Australia had a temperate to tropical climate, and therefore it doesn't matter that much if they are outdoors. To me, though, it seems a bit inefficient to have them outside in Tasmania with a temperate climate (coldish for 3 - 4 months per year). But that is industry standard down here 🤷‍♂️
Q: Why don't you have help?
A: I've had many problems with employees in the past, so now I work alone.
    Q: Why don't you have a ride-on mower?
A: Well, there are a few reasons.
    1. I don't have the right trailer for a ride on, considering I always take away the green waste.
    2. I don't have anywhere to store it, as my shed is too small.
    3. A lot of the properties we do have fences and gates, so you can't actually get a ride-on on to the properties.
    4. I don't do enough big jobs to justify spending 15k AUD on a stander, but it would be nice to have one!
    5. I will get one as soon as my transport and storage problems are solved.
Q: What types of ladders do you use?
A: The large one is a Gorilla Adjustable Platform 150kg and the small one is a Gorilla Mighty 19. They are both adjustable.
    Q: Who/what is Jim's Mowing?
A: Jim's Mowing is a franchise business. The Jim's Group is the biggest home services franchise in Australia.
Q: Why do you have 2 channels that seem to be the same?
A: Quick Cuts (my original channel) has music in the background. Quick Cuts V2 is for those that like just machine noise, and it doesn't have music.

There is no way anyone with cancer could have handled this yard. So glad he realised he was not going to be able to do it no matter how much he wanted to. It’s hard to accept that you can’t do something and even harder to accept help. He must be so grateful for your hard work George. You are a godsend.

I went through a couple rounds of chemo and radiation and basically slept for 2 years. Even after that I had to force myself to spend 10 minutes at a time behind the mower.
My yard wasn't nearly this bad (being in a desert), but it still took a few thousand dollars to get it dug out. Im so glad you found this man so he has an easier way forward. ❤

Really tricky job this time, George, with plenty to sort. I feel this is not just a lawncare exercise but a true community assist. Many people don't realise how exhausting treatments for cancer are. The spirit may well be willing, but as they say, the flesh is weak. Evidenced by the delay getting back to you. It shows they are proud enough not to want help, but know that they need it. Not being able to keep on top of a large job like this can be equally impacting on a patient's MH. Doing it for "free" using RUclips as the funding source must have really made them feel better about their sad situation. Fabulous job as always.

Excellence in action! You're very precise, you clean as you go, you haul off the green waste and rubbish, and you mow several times! (I'm sure I'm forgetting something.).
I am looking forward to seeing part II! The ivy should go, the tree by the driveway should go, and the footpath and driveway NEED pressure washing badly.
The back yard! That could be its own video!

In your experience George, how many years do you think it took for this property to get into that state? I think it took years. But you are the expert.
You did a great job as always and a good deed.
Big job, and you made a big difference.
I would hate to know what the backyard looks like.
It still needs alot more work done.
All the trees or bushes on the right still need more cut off them and shaped. The more the better because this sick man will not get to it. Maybe he didn't want that much cut off.
Even the trees one on the right could be trimmed more because he is not well.
I think the man needed to see if you were legit before he agreed to let you do his garden work.
Generally people don't rock up at one's door and offer to do free work. 😂
The man made the right choice. He really needed help.
You are a good man George. 🤗

The yard was most definitely screaming for help but now thanks to your efforts it is one less burden to overcome and pleasure to enjoy. The transformation looks amazing. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and beautiful work. If allowed I hope to see part II.

The homeowner had to work through what he’d like to do and finally accept what his treatment and disease is letting him do. It is hard enough to fight the cancer fight but also coming to mentally realizing he may never physically be able to do the yard work and also face not recovering. It’s hard to come to that realization and accept it and ask for help. It’s a pity family/ friends didn’t step in or pride came in to allow him to acquiesce To help. I hope he has a social worker who is getting him the help he needs! You’re doing a great job for him physically and mentally George! God be with him!

At 15:55 you put a text on screen saying, "These are a type of lily". Yes, they are. They are "Calla Lilies", which for a reason unknown to me, are sometimes associated with funerals. Personally, I think they are beautiful flowers, and at my parents old home we had a small plantation of them. Absolutely delightful flowers.

A nice neighborhood but the people living there could show some empathy and lend a helping hand. If they all pitched in, this mans property could be maintained for a few minutes of donated time each month, helping someone in need and maintaining the neighborhood too. Damn you did a lot of work...well done. You earned some feathers for your wings.
