As an amateur, I decided on the shop lights because if I decide the hobby isn’t for me, I can simply hang them in my garage and basement.
You don’t need full spectrum grow lights for greens. My mom used to get her African violets to bloom by putting them under full spectrum grow lights so they are useful for some purposes but not this.
I bought the cheap 6500k t8 shop lights. Love them. Micros look like these. I use the small green trays- cheap ones. Can’t be more happy. I also have 6500 led strips. They worked as well and were very narrow and easy to hang.

Try adding some reflective sheets on your walls, it will likely help with the stretching towards the light with the outside trays. They are super cheap and easy to put up.
🙂Thank you so much for the Feedback Adrienne Gaeta! We appreciate your support! I took a chance with some reflective sheets around a select group of microgreens...great idea for that project. Where did you purchase yours?
With T8 you can sometimes improve results by mixing one cool white office tube with one warm white kitchen bulb. The contrast of differing hues is not so great as T12, however I still suspect there is a benefit. I am not sure the grow light tubes are better than a mixed pair. You might tape up aluminum foil or mylar on your ends to fill out the spotty growth. The dull side of the foil is the most reflective.
thats what i do too
awesome thank you for the video, I was hoping you would do a video on this exact subject, perfect timing, I am about to get new lights :) this info will help me decide much easier now
Glad that you found this video helpful! We have a lot more coming soon on lights!
I've been watching a bunch of your videos with test results and I am curious if you have a master video with all the optimal results from your experiments. Would be cool to know how the best lights, best grow medium, best seed density, best water nutrients, etc etc etc all work out together.
At this time we do not, however, that's a great idea! Maybe we'll look into creating something in our free time :)
Thanks for the light test. I have been kind of going back and forth trying to decide about iseing shop light which are better for my price range. Since I am going to be blending them into green smoothies think l'll go with the shop lights. Love yall's shows. I learn so much and am ready to give it a try again.
Thank you for watching Stacey Thurston!!! 😄 Glad you enjoyed it!
How was latest attempt at proper lighting...bet you solved it!!!

use mirrors
Yeah, it doesn't really make a whole lot of difference until you want them to flower and fruit. Good to know about the difference in texture. Thanks!

Glad to know the difference wasn't that great. I pulled the trigger on the T8 shop lights 6500k. The 10 pack was on sall and they came with the reflectors. Planning on just using the rflectors on the very outside edges of the two outer lights.
Nice!! I didn’t know they came with the reflectors! Great snag on those, that will jump up the PAR and probably produce a stronger plant!
On The Grow you can get them with or without the reflectors. It is a few more dollars with.

Thank you for this video. I am looking to replace my old old OLD fluorescent tube shop lights with LEDs. I just put in an order of the Blurples and can't wait to try them out!
It would be interesting to know what % of each light spectrum goes into the shop lights ,as their supposed to be a combination of the full light spectrum,as in daylight light tubes. As a grow light with a pink hue has a combination of blue and red light spectrum.
🙂 Erik please visit www.onthegrow.net and check out all the lights we use...
Great video, thank you.
I like how you are managing to cut down the videos time!
Thank you so much for the support Giorgio Terreni!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄
Thank you for sharing this comparison experiment. It good to know shop light maintain a competitive status in other studies. One faction important to mation is if the soil compositon was the same in both. A soil with higher organic composted material will yield a higher than an inorganic one. Additionally, just as important will be your type of fertilizer; organic vs. inorganic. In my experience, watts, lumens and Kelvins has nothing to do with taste but plant growth and health.
Do a test with mixing the lights, two white lights with blurple in the middle & other two blurple with white light in the middle.

yo, you're the man. Have you done anything on the 150W par 38 floodlights? There's 300w and some other W variations. I found for whatever reason it's the 150W that output the best light.
Gi , your videos are really enjoyable and full of great info I have a light question I bought a 6 pack of the pink full spectrum Everything is great but have you noticed that when plugged in a time or power bar they have a slight glow when off but when plugged in the wall its not there Thx
use mirrors save electric
Hey there, I am looking into the opportunity of launching a micro greens operation where I live and I have a plausible suggestion for you: you could easily swap the tubes with rectangular lights (those 30-50-100w ones you usually put on the exterior walls). In that way you would have way more lumens for the same investment, on the other side sacrificing some height space on the racks. Also it would be a fun test to do. Thanks a lot for your content, keep pushing out the great work
Thank you so much for the Feedback E dN! Sounds like a good tactic...we are so stuck with our spacing of ~10inches and lots of ventilation area. 🙂Have a wonderful Easter this year!!!We appreciate your support!
T5 colored bulbs are expensive but I've got better results than kind led k5 1000 with 8 bulb t5 color unit. You can tune your spectrum little better wit t5 colors? Cheap white paint led lights worked well for my needs
And how many lumens? Will that matter? I see barring T8 with 5000K, 40 W and 5000 L. That seems like too much all around. I am looking at using T8 for indoor seed starts.. your thoughts? Thanks.
Thx for the infos
Thank you for watching Adi S.G!!! 😄 Glad you enjoyed it!

Hope to help with any questions as you "grow" with us!!🙂
Is there any problem turning the lights off at night in order to save electricity?
Not at all! We have ours on timers that are set to specific on & off times, that way it's all automated.
I bought the Hykolity T5s from your Amazon affiliate page. Great price at @ 6 dollars each. Also came in handy during hurricane Sally😀
Do you have a video comparing these to the t5 Barrinas or any other lights?

Do you think a 4-light shop light would be overkill? They are 4’ long.
Hi, what fixture are you using for the lights? I am searching everywhere and can't find good options. Thanks
Where do you get your growing trays
Awesome
🙂Thank you so much for the Feedback Janie Goodman! We appreciate your support!
I can’t stand blurple lights. Even if my T8s were lacking I still wouldn’t use anything blurple !!!
Hi there ! Have you compared the Barrina T8 shop lights with the reflectors ( 6500K ) with the Barrina T8 white grow lights ? I’ve got a succulent shelf that has the T8 Barrina Blurple and the Barrina T8 white grow lights ( 3900 Kelvin ). They’re the most colorful succulents in my whole house . But I recently got the T8 Barrina Shop lights that are 6500k . I’m alternating with one blurple , one shop light ...etc . I have 2 blurple and 2 shop lights on each shelf . I’m hoping I didn’t make a mistake not going with the Barrina T8 white grow lights . Hope you have a video comparing the Barrina white grow lights with the Barrina T8 shop lights . I didn’t realize there was a difference in spectrum til they’d already arrived . The shop lights with reflectors was cheaper . But only by $10 🤣. Guess if my plants lose color , I’ll know the white grow lights beat the white shop lights . Thanks for your videos 😊

Ok. 🥂 Thank u. 🙏🏼
Soooooooo.... .. ? Yellow LedS (couple vids back) & Blurples.
Yet, No to fluorescent. (I think) 🥺🤦🏽♀️
Cool Video man..Peace : )Nice content.
Thank you so much for the support Francis Lambert!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄
OK for the 6500k LEDs - isn't 2200lm very low? Wouldn't one want at least higher than 3000lm? Like 5k or so? Raising veggies in early spring for outdoor planting.
Thank you so much for the support Lisa!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄 We are growing microgreens indoors, not the same project!!!
@@OnTheGrow Yes, I understand.
😀 Hi Lisa...We keep our lights at a distance of 8inches from the top of the tray, while most growers stick to 10 inches from the top of the tray...and then we daisy chain three lights (2000 lumens each) achieving 6000 lumens to grow under.
Did you record what seed density you used for this turnip? I did a grow and am pretty sure that I overseeded. Would love your direction. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the support Craig McCallie!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄 In this case I believe in was around 18grams give or take.
❤ you guys
Hi I'm in Kelowna B.C. Amazon wont ship them to me? Could you if I sent you some money for the T8 Blurple ones! I would need 24 of them. This is my email address hiddenlake2017@gmail.com

Thank you Violet Cloutier 🥳 We really appreciate your support!! Can't do that I'm sorry!
Can you tell me how many hours a day do you light?
Our normal lighting schedule is 17 hours on and 7 hours off!
@@OnTheGrow oh thank you very much!
Your results are so close you might want try it more than 1 time? My results from different lights was much easier choosing which done better. Best lamp I've found was adjustawing 1000watt hps/hid. I've bought more but haven't done the experiment on new new... now my favorite lamp is cmh315 from adjustawing? The 630&1000de are great but 315 is the shis
But what lumins? That’s half the criteria for a light to use for growing.
Why wouldn't you link the lights?
They are linked ➽ Grow Lights In This Video: onthegrow.tv/GrowLights
You'll have to find them on this list as Amazon suppliers sometimes change the listing, and we get no updates whenever they do... however, they should be on here.

The pink ones killed my plants and turned the leaves white
I want to see you perform an actual nutritional analysis for your greens.
I’d love to, but the tests are $500-$1000 for each analysis. Since we’d be comparing lights, I’d have to do two tests so it’d be $1,000-$2,000 minimum. Just haven’t been able to justify that cost per test yet. Soon hopefully! 🤗🌱🌱
On The Grow you should do an experiment where you have a mix of full spectrum and shop lights on each shelf. Compare the results from full spectrum only, shop light only, and the mix of two shop light and one full spectrum. Maybe you could get the light manufacturer to sponsor the nutritional analysis.
