When Old-Fashioned Makes More Sense (How Vintage Ideas Can Make Modern Life Better) | Jill Winger

  • In our modern world, it is easy to accept all of the latest conveniences and innovations that are offered to us. At face value, they may seem to make our lives easier or better, but at what cost? Jill Winger has been asking these kinds of critical questions for many years, and this questioning is the basis for her upcoming book on how many of the old-fashioned ways may actually be superior. Our discussion is nuanced (we don’t throw out all modernity!) and serves as an interesting conversation starter as you weigh the costs and benefits of modern ways in your own life.
    In this episode, we cover:
    - A historical perspective on the recent popularity of homesteading
    - Weighing the long-term costs and benefits of convenience
    - Factoring in the unexpected benefits of doing things the old-fashioned way
    - Deciding which conveniences to embrace and which old-fashioned ways to preserve
    - How to begin learning new skills when you feel overwhelmed
    - Looking with hindsight at the history of modernization and its impact
    - What modern conveniences we choose to live without
    - Learning new skills and pursuing goals with children at home
    - How to prioritize when your plate is full
    - Our perspectives on the rise of aesthetically focused homesteading content

I LOVE grocery delivery! And, in my mind, it's bringing back an old-fashioned practice. My 70-yr old mother remembers early morning milk deliveries. Milk, butter, eggs, bread used to be delivered on a regular basis. Grocery lists could be left with the shop keeper and would be brought by the delivery boy later in the day. I love this practice. And I'm happy to give a delivery driver a job and a generous tip for something that is so time saving for me. I'm all about the old fashioned lifestyle. I'm the one that receives joy from washing the laundry outdoors and hanging everything on the wash line. I've begun eliminating everything artificial/ disposable from our lifestyle/ diet/ routine. I think I was born in the wrong century...

I have dairy delivered as well as mushrooms, local chicken and i use to have locally roasted coffee delivered before we started roasting at home. many farmers at the farmers market in my area have subscription boxes for delivery as well. I agree with you 100%. I tried doing Walmart delivery/ pickup 3 times, I believe, but they definitely used that opportunity to off load over ripe, about to expire, expired food as well as really dented cans which was unfortunate. If you see this ( old post so maybe you won’t) Have a Merry Christmas 😀

I adore a good amalgamation of old-fashioned and modern. 😊 I enjoy my heated seats, instant pot, and freezers- I also enjoy the simplicity of not everything being automated and electronic and connected. We have mini homestead on 1/4 acre in our small town. There is a small orchard that is still immature, and lots of other rotating crops. Our milk, yogurt, and most of our cheese and meat is delivered weekly by a local farm. It's great, and we have developed a pretty good relationship with our delivery guy. If you would look at our house, it doesn't have the farmhouse/homestead aesthetic. It's more global nerdy eclectic, which is something I just made up, lol. I have Jill's cookbook, and I'm excited about her new book!

Thank you girls! This was very good for this Gramma homesteader to listen to. You are both about my daughter's age. That last part you are talking about, which is to not worry about what everything looks like, is so true! It bothers me that the barn is a mess with all kinds of junk that my husband keeps and other things here. After all, we have lived here 30 years and have been married for 40! I love listening to both of you gals. You have so much to offer, especially women. Even more seasoned women can learn from you both. My take on grocery delivery. That’s how it use to be. Milk and groceries being delivered but for me I have extreme trust issues and tons of allergies I just can’t do it. I love the idea of it. And I don’t think it’s any different than ordering something from amazon but I’m a little funny about someone picking out my food.

So agree about the lab created foods. As far as the food system, I think many people need to start trying to create their own food. A long time ago there was a video where this family lived on a standard large plot in California and grew all their food and even sold to near by restaurants. It's a matter of priority ad desire. I have the aesthetic, but it's always dirty, lol.

The cruise control thing is probably a setting you can change. A lot of vehicles will slow down when they get closer to another car ahead of them. But they always seem ridiculously sensitive, and slow down way before they need to. You should be able to change a setting on this distance.

I've always wanted to live this way. I loved reading books set in pioneer times. Always interested in antiques and practical everyday life from "back in the day." How did they use these items in their everyday life. But I married a very technologically minded man who loves to travel and loves new things. So I kinda drifted away from it. Though I still dabbled in canning, sourdough, etc. now with more people putting out this kind of content, I'm trying to learn more and get into it more.

I feel like the way that grocery shopping is changing is a new take on how it was done in the past. Going to the supermarket and walking the isles is a pretty new way to shop in the grand scheme. In urban areas delivery was common possibly in smaller cities or towns too. Making an order and picking up was the way you purchased if you did go to the store, every thing was behind the counter. The milk man delivered to houses that needed milk too.
I still do a fair amount f in store shopping. I have a 2 hour window on Mondays that I use for shopping. But I also love ordering for pick up or delivery, it saves me tons of time.

I started taking them when I realized, but then we shifted to Instacart. We talk to the drivers, we still hit a small local grocery for water refills, but they are almost immune to impulse purchases when I send them with a card and a list to get water. Hopefully that holds up when it is their own money, but they are so used to us getting the same things that they don't even really look.

Grocery delivery is actually not new, just revived. One hundred years ago a housewife could place an order with her local shopkeeper and it would be delivered to her home. I’m 60 and even in my childhood I remember the milkman delivering milk and cheese to our home. There were also fruit and vegetable peddlers who came around selling their produce which my mom and other ladies in the neighborhood purchased.

I seriously love listening to both of you ladies🩷 I am newer to this old fashioned lifestyle, just started about 2 years ago due to moving somewhere..that convenience just wasn't really a thing😂 I seriously love it though! Which is funny coming from someone born a city girl🩷
