I was about to unsubscribe for you not using the phrase "what a crock of shit" anywhere in this video when getting frustrated at the game, but then 11:44 happened and I laughed a lot. Good show.
I've been waiting forever for you to do this game review this is such a great game so underrated of a series this game really was it's a shame they haven't made more besides the first two I think or they might have had a third keep up the great work my bro
I'm definitely biased when it comes to this game since I grew up on it, but I feel a lot of people aren't fair to it. The controls are weird, but the entire game is designed around them so it works. If you learn how to manipulate them properly, the entire game is a very fair challenge. Now granted, no one will take the time to do that if you didn't grow up on it. I feel the same way about acclaimed games like the first two Crash games and Banjo-Kazooie. I didn't grow up on them, so those games just aren't that fun to me; but, I'll play Croc all day.
Loved this game as a kid when I rented it from blockbuster. Never got really far into it though because it was pretty damn hard. Really loved the video Square Eyed Jack, looking forward to you covering Croc 2 one day.
This game was the very first thing I've seen on the Playstation as a kid. It's also the very first 3D game I've ever seen. I fell in love with the visuals, the music and the overall esthetics. I only had a Sega Mega Drive as a kid and beyond my late teens, so playing Playstation when I visited my friends was somethig very special. When I finally got the chance to play this game on my friend's Playstation my initial reaction was "...that's...not very fun..." Since then I never really got into 3D platformers because of this first experience with the new genre. That quickly changed once he showed me Ratchet and Clank for his new Ps2 though. Which reminds me... (I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself) If I'd have to describe this game in three sentences I'd say "I'm getting serious Alfred Chicken vibes from this game. A simple, functional, aggressively average, neither good nor bad platformer without any spice. You can play it, but you might as well play something else." Very nice video!
Yeah, this game is far from perfect but personally I get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Regardless thanks for another well made and entertaining video!.
I remember when I was a kid, gamestop or eb games (or whereever it was I went back then) literally couldn't get anyone to buy Croc in my area, so they just gave me a copy when I was buying something else for free. Such a strange memory. Never actually got around to playing it, so this is more of a curiosity watch for me than some of the other reviews. 🤔
Ok, if you want to play something better, try out the Gex Trilogy specifically Gex: Enter The Gecko and Gex: Undercover Gecko. Those games are better then Croc.
Right I seriously need to know this. At 1:09 how did you make your name and the rest of the words in the Croc font, because that’s just awesome extra effort holy shit and I really need to know
If I remember correctly the manual describes the water as being "electrified water." Of course that doesn't make any sense considering there's no visual to establish it being electrified... and the actual underwater stages have the electric barriers you have to swim through, but that's the only explanation I remember being offered for why the water hurts you.
Yeah, it definitely has its issues - it's still a huge favorite of mine (it was the first PlayStation game I owned and the only one I had for a little while) but playing it now I do see areas where the frustration is amped up - one particular instance that surprisingly doesn't seem to get brought up very often (in fact I don't know that I've seen anyone comment on it before) are those fucking bonus stages during the desert levels where you have to race the ghost to the end to get the key, those always manage to fill me with aneurysm inducing levels of rage. Still, the visuals and the soundtrack are magical - it's a different game when you're like 8, 9 years old.
Also it actually took me a really long time to beat the Secret Sentinel boss as a kid. I didn't realize you were supposed to have all 4 gongs simultaneously ringing, so I'd just jump on the platforms and wait for it to reach the next gong and he'd throw sparks at me - it just keeps on going and he gets higher and higher up, and I'd get sick of it really quickly. Now I feel like an idiot realizing the fight can be finished in like ten seconds, ha ha.
Would love to see you review Kingsley's Adventure one day; not that I think you would enjoy it, except for the soundtrack, but it would surely be entertaining to hear your thoughts on it xD
That's a shame, you've missed some of my best stuff. While you wait for the next review, I recommend having a look at Season 4 (so far), last year's Christmas Special and Tony Hawktober. All of these series can be found scrolling down on the main channel page.
I'm pretty sure that's freezing water iirc. Then again, aren't crocodiles supposed to prefer cold water or am I wrong? And those switch puzzles, don't try to jump from side to side. Turn either to the left or right, then press up and down.
Mannnnnn this game doesn't get enough hype outside the true nerdy echoleons of the net. I even nearly forgot about it. And who else better than to review it
You do have to realize that the game was mostly built around the tank/driving control scheme in mind, and that in 1997, Sony just released the Dual Analog controller (1998 was when the DualShock was introduced), so they most likely did not have the time to fine tune the game to work with analog control more fluently.
It's not a survival horror game, it's a platformer. The challenge should come from challenging platforming, not because the control is stiff and awkward or overly sensitive. Crash 2 was 1997 and they got the analogue control right. Even gave you an option in the pause menu to tweak it if you needed.
But the Crash Bandicoot games are more designed as linear hallways, so analog or not, it was just fine. Croc however, wanted to be a bit more open with its level design, and game developers still weren't quite able to pin down full 3D movement with a directional pad. Since most early PlayStation games had to work with a directional pad, the tank/driving controls was what they opted for, for better or worse, especially since at the time, moving freely in any direction was unheard of (and here's something relating to Super Mario 64 out of pure obligation) And even if they got full 3D movement with a D-Pad, it was only relegated to 8 directions as opposed to full 360 degrees of movement, and while Croc is flawed with its controls, I have absolutely no problem with the game at all with the control scheme it was built with.
Square Eyed Jak You are more deserving of much more subscribers. Instead of click baiting bullshit you put all of your soul into your work which I greatly admire.what do you think of the edited screenshots of reignited from the trailer as well as the ps4 song theme. Btw loved that enter the dragonfly broken neck part in the stream.
I loved this game when I was younger, I can still remember sitting in front of my shitty box TV getting hyped over the main theme song, granted I never got to the end of the game but the first levels are so nostalgic to me, it's just got that very iconic vibe I get. Now looking back at it,it's not that great... but from my nostalgic point of view the themes and colours along with the feels the game gave me when I was younger is something I'll never forget. Thank you for making this review it revived my childhood 💖
Great review jak always a joy to see a review from you.I actually have always wondered how you would react to playing a certain ps2 game called mister mosquito it's so bizarre yet oddly satisfying to play. It's like metal gear solid with its stealth based gameplay with amazing boss fights. You're a mosquito flying around trying to suck enough blood to survive the winter from the people without being spotted and fighting the humans when spotted by hitting pressure points to knock them unconscious for a moment.Seriously fun and entertaining with a great sense of humor I'd love to see a review someday it would be amazing.
Jak you mad lad! I love croc YESSSSS! I only recently found you but I LOVE your videos! Binge watched so many of your reviews! Really hyped for this! (edit): Okay so I just finished the video and although I love Croc, I do agree with most of your points here, and I probably wouldn't enjoy the game as much now that I've grown up admittedly. One of the main things I loved about Croc though was the colours and aesthetics (especially the skyboxes), they really enthralled me as a kid. Will you be doing Croc 2 by any chance?
Cheers, I will admit. Some of the skyboxes remind me of Spyro and yeah, despite the smaller areas, a lot of them do look nice. Yes, I'm doing the entire series! ;)
It's all good really. Sometimes when we play a game as a child (especially for those of us who were kids in 90s to the early 00s), we may have games we really love despite them not being good on a technical level. Have you played the game as an adult?
Nice to see ya finally tackle Croc on the channel! :D Shame Macho didn't accept the invite though to play something over than a Wrestling game, oh well, maybe sometime in the future. :)
Hey there Jak, Been watching you for awhile and I have been enjoying all the videos and reviews you have made :-D I was wondering, since you have covered quite a number of the 3D platformers on the PS1, Maybe you can cover the rayman series, it would be interesting to see your perspective on those.
It’s one thing to use tank controls for horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but in a 3D platformer it makes landing precise jumps sluggish. Cough Bubsy 3D! Cough
Was one of my favorite childhood games (first I ever got along with crash bandicoot 1 and the rugrats game - actually ok, but in hindsight I never completed the bastard. Now I remember why!
Hey jak! I am a big fan of your videos! Thanks to them, I have discovered a lot of spyro and crash titles that I didnt know! Tell me, being a spyro&crash huge fan, from what games I MUST stay away? Thanks!
Rhys Evans He might but I don’t want him to play it yet because Croc 2 isn’t an improvement over Croc 1. Let’s let him play the Gex Trilogy first! Or A Hat In Time, Scaler, Blinx The Timesweeper, Banjo Kazooie, Voodoo Vince, Yoshi’s Wooly World, Super Mario Odyssey, one of the Megaman Battle Network Games, or........ no I’m not that evil to suggest that game. (Mighty No. 9) Seriously, Square Eyed Jak DO NOT PLAY MIGHTY NO. 9, it isn’t worth the insanity and unfair bullshit you will have endure to do it!
I remember wanting to play this game so bad back when I was a kid when I first saw the game in my local game shop way back in the day but for one reason or another, I never got around to playing it as I got hooked on other games at the time. It wasn't until about 2012 when I finally got around to trying it and oh my goodness was it not a good experience at all. It was bad that I only played the first level and never went back to finishing the game. I'm sorry but I just couldn't deal with the sluggish tank controls which are a HUGE no no when it comes to 3D platformers. I'm pretty sure had I played this game back in 1997, I would've been able to get used to it but unfortunately, that just isn't the case. It really sucks because ignoring the bad sluggish controls, the foundational assets wee almost perfect. A cute, cartoony styled game with a lovable little critter protagonist, no obnoxious vehicles, and a fun looking worlds to explore. Had it had better controls, it probably would've been able to have a trilogy set just like Crash and Spyro did. I'm not afraid to say that I feel that the Croc games should definitely get an HD remake. It would be so cool to play the game with great graphics and a much better control scheme but that's just me :) It's a shame really but I'll most likely end up playing the game sometime later when I get around to reviewing it since I do love 3D Platformers, for better or worse but I enjoyed your review. And going off the ending I'm totally stoked to see what's going to happen next! Again, great video!
I knew the first time I tried it (and only made it to level 4) that the only way I'd ever get through it would be for a video. It's a good source of motivation, that's for sure!
HOLY SHIT JAK YOU DONT KNOW HOW LONG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR A SERIES REVIEW OF THIS FROM SOMEBODY!!! AND ITS COMING FROM MY FAVORITE RUclipsR THANK YOU JAK!!! I literally dropped my phone in shock when I saw this video 😂.
now that I think about it I feel like a lot of people hold this game in high esteem because they only played those earlier stages as a kid and never made it to the crap at the end, they just remember that AWESOME main theme and first few levels and think the game was perfect. That said I still like both it and its sequel, despite their flaws.
if i didn't mastered tomb raiders controls and if this didn't have a banger ost, i would've handed it to the garbage man. I agree with all of your points. Its not bad but compared to games like spyro, sm64, banjo, etc, it feels like last years, old shit. One of my biggest gripes with the game is the enviroments, specifically how the game integrates the platforms with the enviroment. I'm not sure if I'm on a island or skybox with the way everything kinda just floats. Anyway, great review Jak! Can't wait for the next review! (Edit) Part 2 coming soon?!?!
1. The ending. I think if you didn't put in any music, and just left it silent, it would've created some good ''spooky'' atmosphere. (but it's not like it's bad the way it is now) 2. Nice review. I found Croc really cute, and some of the levels looked really cool. I might just pick this up, I know you gave it a 5, but I'm kinda interested in it. 3. Uploaded right on midnight for me :D (all in all good shit lad)
I think the shallow water hurts Croc because it's glacier water, whereas the deeper water is in more suitable temperatures for swimming. Still, I agree with you that it's a stupid mechanic.
Just an opinion, i'm not a fan of the blurred out sides of the gameplay footage. I think black bars or a simple background would look better. Again, just my dumb opinion. Really enjoyed the video :)
I actually played Croc 2 when I was younger. I'll admit I kinda put in a bit of effort trying to complete it. But after trying out the Crash N Sane Trilogy just a few weeks ago as I got my PS4 in anticipation for Spyro, I feel so ashamed that I even put in effort trying to progress in Croc 2. The most notable difference was the controls. While Crash could be hard and frustrating at times, at least I can feel like I'm in control of the character. They were splendid but mostly only for platforming *(Btw, Fuck The Motorbike Races In Crash 3).* Croc's momentum was so heavy that it just felt like a chore manoeuvring him. I seriously would not enjoy playing the game again if I had to. ^_^
crocodiles Caimans alligators and Gharials are awesome creature's its proboberly i love dingodile from the crash bandicoot seires Feraligatr line and Krookodile line in the pokemon game series so much
I could never do this game, I'd get up to a certain level in the first world and get stuck/bored and quit the game, I don't know what I'd play afterwards though, my mind says Tekken 3 and I know that's not right.
I used to love this game as a kid but now I'm older and honestly not that great, today I got the notification that Jak was reviewing it and I was like "he is gonna shit on that game so hard" XD
10:55, Looks like the water he dies from is in the snow level, which means the ice-water basically gives Croc, a reptile, a deadly chill.
Sees new Jak video * eyes widen* see that hes reviewing C R O C .
* heart pounding ensues*
Jak you are a gaming inspiration in this market of profiteers and trendies 🤟
Much appreciated mate, cheers! :D
I was about to unsubscribe for you not using the phrase "what a crock of shit" anywhere in this video when getting frustrated at the game, but then 11:44 happened and I laughed a lot. Good show.

wha?t he didnt say anything.

"Croc Has More Underground Than Tony Hawk's Underground."
I laughed so hard lol! 😂😂😂
Glad to see another classic style review Jak
Caddicarus is okay, but I’ll take your vids over his any day of the week.
I played this on pc. Finding out the game loads up my music when a cd is in, was a game changer
With all this underground I'm surprised you didn't save this game for Tony Hawktober.
👌🏿
Insert your " BUT CADDICARUS ALREADY REVIEWED THIS GAME "comments here
YOU! IT WAS YOI WHO SENT JUNGE OF THE GEORGLE! SLAUGHTER HIM!
Yukiteru Fujisaki yep , I'm the one

The more Croc videos the better

One of my favourite games ever. Would genuinely love a every level ranked for Croc!
Your reviews are some of the best on RUclips rn
Croc? Now that name brings alot of memories with it.
Loved this game as a kid when I rented it from blockbuster. Never got really far into it though because it was pretty damn hard. Really loved the video Square Eyed Jack, looking forward to you covering Croc 2 one day.

Very nice video!
The bit at the end where you go on a walk is just like the game such a good skit lmao
I love it when you do a review its all ways amazing
Ok, if you want to play something better, try out the Gex Trilogy specifically Gex: Enter The Gecko and Gex: Undercover Gecko. Those games are better then Croc.
SpyroFan69 not really. The second one is ok but the first is boring.
my thoughts are:
Gex 1 is one of the worst platformers i’ve ever played
Gex 2 Enter the Gecko is… fine
Gex 3 Deep Cover Gecko is kinda good
Who new I would watch this video over and over until Croc Remaster came out! The sassy crocodile needs to come back for a new review🎉
Right I seriously need to know this. At 1:09 how did you make your name and the rest of the words in the Croc font, because that’s just awesome extra effort holy shit and I really need to know
Hope u got the answer😥
If I remember correctly the manual describes the water as being "electrified water." Of course that doesn't make any sense considering there's no visual to establish it being electrified... and the actual underwater stages have the electric barriers you have to swim through, but that's the only explanation I remember being offered for why the water hurts you.
That just makes the logic more broken though, given as you explained, the actual underwater sections include electrical hazards!
This game is dumb.
Literally one of my favorite childhood games!
How could it have been figuratively??
Erik Heijden what do you mean by figuratively?
@@erikheijden9828 I thought literally meant figuratively nowadays.
Would love to see you review Kingsley's Adventure one day; not that I think you would enjoy it, except for the soundtrack, but it would surely be entertaining to hear your thoughts on it xD
I haven't watched this channel in a while, but now I'm interested of your videos in the future .

Hey thanks for the recommendations, and I was actually working on some reviews of my own, I would appreciate it if you could check them out.
Duuuuude ! Cheers for the nostalgia 😆 haven't played this in so long..makes me wanna leave work and play
I'm pretty sure that's freezing water iirc. Then again, aren't crocodiles supposed to prefer cold water or am I wrong?

Croc the legends of the gobbos underground has a nice ring to it
Absolutely loved the ending with the several shots 😂👌
Cheers, had a lot of fun shooting that.

LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 8:39 & 9:44
this review is a classic. Edit: YOOO THE ENDING SKIT LOL
Nice one as always! I don't remember if you have a dreamcast or not, but it would definitely be interesting to see you try some of its games.

Couldn’t get past the boxing beetle when I was little! 🤣
What's the music in the beginning
Can’t wait to see your review on croc 2

Ah okay lol
At 17:10 epic dude epic!
Croc Eyed Jak
Nice to see ya finally tackle Croc on the channel! :D Shame Macho didn't accept the invite though to play something over than a Wrestling game, oh well, maybe sometime in the future. :)
I just had surgery and this is just as good as the many painkillers Im on.
Hey there Jak,
Been watching you for awhile and I have been enjoying all the videos and reviews you have made :-D

"The More I Play This Game The More I Feel Like Spontaneously F*cking Combusting."
Lol! 😂😂😂
You make some good videos and that’s a really cool game collection you got.
Is that Nitro Kart in your 0:04
HOLY SHIT JAK YOU DONT KNOW HOW LONG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR A SERIES REVIEW OF THIS FROM SOMEBODY!!!
I'm nostalgic for a game I've never played. Lol
Soooo, do we tell him about Croc 2?
if i didn't mastered tomb raiders controls and if this didn't have a banger ost, i would've handed it to the garbage man.
(Edit)
Part 2 coming soon?!?!
"I Think It's About Time We Look At This Croc."
I laughed more than I should have lol! 😂😂😂
You should check out the hand held croc games 😁👌
1. The ending. I think if you didn't put in any music, and just left it silent, it would've created some good ''spooky'' atmosphere. (but it's not like it's bad the way it is now)
2. Nice review. I found Croc really cute, and some of the levels looked really cool. I might just pick this up, I know you gave it a 5, but I'm kinda interested in it.
3. Uploaded right on midnight for me :D
(all in all good shit lad)
Croc is still one of my favorite platforming games.
So you finally got around to reviewing "Bootleg Yoshi" eh?
"Croc Was Originally Pitched In Nintendo As A 3D Yoshi Game."
That explains why Croc almost looks like Yoshi, but totally different animals! 🤔😄😁👍
Man I just love his design!
Once again good review
I think the shallow water hurts Croc because it's glacier water, whereas the deeper water is in more suitable temperatures for swimming. Still, I agree with you that it's a stupid mechanic.
I get your logic, that's the explanation i came up with myself... but it's still fucking dumb.
this bango-kazooie and rayman is an underrate platformer games in my opinion
Just an opinion, i'm not a fan of the blurred out sides of the gameplay footage. I think black bars or a simple background would look better. Again, just my dumb opinion. Really enjoyed the video :)
So what happened at the end? Was that a crocodile stalking you?
I highly recommend you to try out A Hat in Time
Try doing a video on the Timesplitters series cause that’d be awesome. (Doesn’t really care if it gets trashed on)
Nice video keep up the good work
You must take a look at the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger series
"Sometimes You Can Go Down From The Surface Only To Come Back Onto The Surface."
That sounds very confusing! 🤔🙃
crocodiles Caimans alligators and Gharials are awesome creature's its proboberly i love dingodile from the crash bandicoot seires Feraligatr line and Krookodile line in the pokemon game series so much
"Hello!?"
*knocking on somebody's head*
"Anybody Home!!"
I laughed so hard lol! 😂😂😂
I could never do this game, I'd get up to a certain level in the first world and get stuck/bored and quit the game, I don't know what I'd play afterwards though, my mind says Tekken 3 and I know that's not right.
Tekken 3 was an awesome game and at the very least, at least it had great controls in comparison to this slugfest lol
Gosh I love your humour
Then 2 years later, Croc 2 came along.....
0:46 I believe we requested a another Platformer shooter by imnsoniac, YOU CAN'T KEEP US IN THE DARK FOREVER IT'S GONNA HAPPEN SOMEDAY!
Oh yes, here we go
I can't dislike this game. The nostalgia is too great. Loved to beat it on my old 2005 laptop.
But yeah, it's a Dark Souls
Can you review Conker's bad fur day next please (I don't know if you'll like it or not but wanna see what you think)
I used to love this game as a kid but now I'm older and honestly not that great, today I got the notification that Jak was reviewing it and I was like "he is gonna shit on that game so hard" XD
For a moment I thought this was a Yooka-Laylee review
