I'm VERY new at this. I guess another thing would be to install the SSD like it's a second drive, put Windows on it, & then try to access the old drive from there somehow. Would that be possible?

Nice well-done video. I like Samsung so much, and am happy with their performance and reliability. I generate a lot of data and keep adding a 4TB drive every half year. I am looking to get another 870Evo 4TB to stripe with my two existing 4TB 870Evo storage drives. I like to wait and get one on sale, so I start before I really NEED it. But the Crucial MX500 4TB is $340 right now. I know I'll notice no difference in performance... it's about the same as the 870Evo. I am bummed the TBW is lower than the 870Evo, but realistically, we'll be on to some new storage device when I get near there. This is for writing to and then storing the data. It won't be getting a lot of R/W cycles really. And the software to check it sounds good. I like Samsung's Magician, but this other look good also. So I think I'm-a gonna step out and get one! These are good drives, but they still feel a bit sluggish compared to some faster SATA ones. - For example, I happen to have a Samsung 840 Pro, which at its time was one of the top-of-the-line SSDs (also very expensive, but I got it with some used laptop much later), but because it's so fast, it's still faster than some of the good newer SSDs, like the MX500. - Somehow its response-time is lower, so it feels just that much snappier for navigating an OS and opening programs for example. But again, these are great reliable drives that are still quite fast and of course affordable. I have a bunch as well, but that's how I found out.
Hi! Firstly, great channel! If my laptop already has a 256 m2, and I chuck this in, would I need to reinstall anything? Wouldn’t everything be installed on the drive that’s already there and then I can just make this my primary? If I add this, will it increase speed even if I leave the m2 stick where it is?
If your m.2 is a sata then this will be about the same. If your m.2 is an NVME drive it should outperform even the mx500 due to the interface limits of sata. What mobo or model?
Hey man just wanted to say that you forgot to mention that you should uncheck the scheduled optimization in the drive properties that windows will run on the drive. If left checked windows will run a defrag on your drive on a schedule and defrags are bad for your ssd.
I created a USB with the Windows Media Creation Tool but the only option it allows me is Windows 10 Home. I must be missing something. I searched your channel and could not find the video you hinted to for the creation of the USB. Any thoughts?

I got a hdd which has all my data so if i install ssd in my pc and make the ssd as boot drive thru installing windows from usb will all my hdd data delete?
If you unplug your current drive, you can install this SSD and windows from scratch, then connect your old drive and access your files from D:\. Or if you follow the instructions in my “is my hard drive failing” series you can upgrade and keep your data - and gain an external backup drive!
Everything you install an internal ssd it will give you the bsod ? i dont understand why this happened to me with my powerspec g167 and my barricuda 8tb sata hdd. I returned it and got the crucial mx500 4 TB because a friend told me its faster than hdds. I believe im going to run into a lot of issues installing this.
So if you have data on say your hard drive, would you boot up and see your desktop as it was? Or will you have to put all your applications back on the desktop?
This one is only the steps for a clean installation. If you setup the computer with your new SSD from scratch, you can always put your old drive in an external enclosure and use it as a portable drive. I also have a video that shows how to keep your files in my channel - check out the “is my hard drive failing” video series. It’s step by step and keeping files.
I would like to know the write speed, after the drive's SLC cache gets filled. Those benchmarks, in the video, tested only the SLC cache NAND cells; not the drive's native TLC NAND cells. I would also like to know how many GB of SLC cache the drive has. I have some large copy jobs (over 100GB), and if the drive has, perhaps, 25GB of SLC cache, and then slows from 500MB/s to 50MB/s, that will be a non starter for me.
Like many others I began my search on crucial ssd to solve a failed cloning of old boot drive to a new Cruucial SSD. YThe problem is that after the clone process the SSD is left with 3 partitions. Partitions 1 and 2 are identified as PRIMARY and 3rd Partition is identified as RECOVERY. SPECIAL NOTE: The Crucial cloning software did not offer a chance to resize partitions before initiating the cloning. Got on chat with Crucial and asked why it didn't provide a chance to select final partition sizes and they directed me to another download of the Crucial Cloning software that they claim it would allow user selection of final partition sizes during the clone process. Having 2 PRIMARY partitions on one drive is a no no. That's what I believe to be the problem which was causing DRIVE ERRORS FOUND ATTEMPTING REPAIR during drive swap and initial boot after cloning. I thought I could resolve the problem using DISKPART> commands...but, I have yet to master that skillset.
Yes and no. It depends on the TBW value on the drive. If someone used a significant portion up you could run into issues. The software should tell you and you could return if not good. If the TBW is zero it may be an unopened return.
My brother got me the mx 500 500GB SSD and it's great. Unfortunately my pc only have a sata 2 cable, the speed only goes 260-310MB/s. But for the price it is an absolute steal. If i'm correct, this ssd can be compared to samsung 860 evo.
Hei good video! I bought mx500 from amazon and my box is similar to yours but in the website the box is different where it includes the ssd image on top is this real or fake
Great questions. I believe it’s formatted GPT since it allows UEFI boot. If you want Secure Boot and other features, UEFI boot and GPT formatting is best. I recently had to completely wipe and install a machine because they wanted it to dual boot Win 7 and Win 10 for compatibility. MBR only supports 4 partitions also.
When i installed Win 10 this way, it has created 2-3 sub partitions as in recovery, system and one unallocated 100mb partition, etc. I tried deleting them and reformatting during install process etc, but they keep getting created with each attempt, it seems like this is compulsory with windows ?
Why crucial website is not showing any information about dram on mx500 250 gb, even I have checked on Amazon but no information provided on dram for this product. Now I have doubt whether this product has dram or not Can you help me with this by correctly answering the question.
I don’t think they would undercut it. They found more room on the other side of the board, probably for larger drives. Based on the IO performance I wouldn’t have any issues buying an mx500. Why only 250 and not higher?
Hi i need help... My laptop Hp 15-bn070wm had an error called Hard driver Error 301. Will it get fixed if i change my current drive to this? Please i need answer..
Hi I have an old Dell XPS 8500 Desktop PC which come with 2TB 7200rpm HDD with Windows 10. I'm thinking of upgrading that 2TB HDD with an 1TB SATA3 SSD drive with clean install. In this case would I be able to "transfer" my Windows 10 license from my 2TB HDD to my new 1TB SSD? Thanks!
Yep, never had a problem with Windows licensing. The biggest tip would be to try to shrink your boot partition on the 2TB small enough to fit in the 1TB drive. You can shrink by removing files, defragmenting, then using the shrink option in the Disk Management mmc.
just bought mine it had 97 health on shop when i got home installed it and checked health it dropped to 96, but not dropping further since 3 days. should i be worried?
Hi! I have an Asus x550vx laptop, and I replaced my HDD with this MX500 500GB SSD, but I can't install win10 to it. It appeares in the BIOS, but when I boot from my pendrive with the win10 installer, there's nothing in the disk selection panel. It says that maybe I have to install a driver... but what driver for an SSD, I just want to install an op system... What should I do? Do I really have to install win10 on my already formatted HDD to install Crucial clone software (from their support page) and then clone win10 to SSD then format HDD again?
Very interesting. So you see the drive in the BIOS, but not in Windows. Does your BIOS on the laptop have a "RAID" or "AHCI" mode selection? If so pick the AHCI and try again. Thanks for watching and sending in your question. To answer your second question - not necessarily, you should be able to go direct when windows sees the drive. Not seeing the drive is a symptom of the bios setting being wrong possibly.
@@TheNetGuy Thanks for your answer! Yes, BIOS is in AHCI mode. I tried to delete the HDD partitions, but SSD didn't appear. Tried to delete HDD boot option from BIOS, but SSD didn't appeared in win10 install again. Then I unplugged my HDD from the optical drive's sata connector, but nothing. Then I un-and replugged the SSD, maybe it's something with the connection, but again, just bios sees it. I checked a lot of forums and discussions about it, and can't find any answer... :( If my SSD was wrong or broken, it wouldn't appear in BIOS, I think. I don't know what could be the problem, it's really wierd... Maybe my laptop doesn't support this SSD, but it's nonsense. And what do you think, what bios setting could be wrong? I tried to put SSD in 1st boot option, then 2nd, but nothing. When I boot the win10 installer from pendrive, SSD is nowhere, installer can't find any disk to install op system to it, just my 1TB HDD when I plug it back to the old optical drive's sata connector. :( Maybe I would try to make a partition on SSD, when is reinstall win10 to HDD. But in win10, I can't add SSD to disks, only as a storage. Then disk manager can see it. But if I don't do this, disk manager also can't see SSD like the win10 installer. I try to think that this SSD is a ghost... :D :D
I have a newbie question, I recently bought the MX500 I want to use it mainly for games 'steam' while I have my HDD for windows I'm confused on how to do, maybe some tips?
If you plug it into your motherboard Windows should detect the new drive and you can use it for storage. Probably a better idea to move your Windows onto SSD if you can be bothered with the hassle.
Most of them yes. And if you have logged into windows 10 on it the license is stored in your Microsoft account automatically and will be applied when you login.
I’d look for an adapter. Often the third or fourth wires are an RPM signal. You could check amazon. Also PC Tech Hustle channel has a video on the fan wiring in his Lian Li Lancool swap video.
You can if you have a spare SATA port and power yes! The usb trick is sometimes easier and on most laptop drives gives you a portable usb backup then as well.
Samsung is the best, but pricey. Crucial next and adata very last. I’ve had bad luck with them recently. Can’t go wrong with the mx500 and the 1TB is on sale today.
This drive is retardedly good, after filling up all the m2 slots on my mobo i needed some more space for those huge lhorse porn collections i got, so i grabbed a mx500 and bruh even tho it's slower it more than keeps up while being used for transient file platforming or whatever other generative work.
If you use the amazon links I make a very small amount on each sale yes. But it’s the same if you buy hand soap or a sandisk drive. Helps keep the channel going 👍. Even if I didn’t make a dime I still love these drives.
My Crucial MX500 SSD won’t boot. I go into BIOS and it’s selected as top priority on the boot menu, but I keep getting the message: “Reboot and select Proper Boot Device” PLEASE HELP
Yes, depending on the model. Send me the model number from the bottom of your laptop and I’d be happy to help you out and look up the compatible brands. Performance is day and night difference.
@@TheNetGuy Hp-15-af148ca is the model of the laptop. I got the 2.5inch Crucial MX500 ssd ik these are for laptops but not sure if it works on Hp laptops. Thanks
Will you be tacking the question of where your computer hardware is made? The climate change conference has flagged up the ever increasing concern of pollution and climate change behaviours by major countries such as the usa, india, and china. In Europe the UK is a central hub f computing and maybe chip component development.I would prefer to buy a item from europe who use sustainable energy than those countries who continue to use fossel fuel pollution to assemble hardware.Would you buy a laptop made in europe or coal polluting india and china?
The same with almost every SSD. People have their brand affinity. I’ve had horrible luck with AData and won’t buy them again. Other people love them. Crucial has been good to me and price-to-performance it’s still a fantastic SSD with a great company behind it.

Maybe I would try to make a partition on SSD, when is reinstall win10 to HDD. But in win10, I can't add SSD to disks, only as a storage. Then disk manager can see it. But if I don't do this, disk manager also can't see SSD like the win10 installer. I try to think that this SSD is a ghost... :D :D
I have a newbie question, I recently bought the MX500
I want to use it mainly for games 'steam' while I have my HDD for windows
I'm confused on how to do, maybe some tips?
If you plug it into your motherboard Windows should detect the new drive and you can use it for storage. Probably a better idea to move your Windows onto SSD if you can be bothered with the hassle.
What is the ssd in the motherboard then?
This made my xbox one s run load and save so much faster.
Yay!!!
Does the Windows OS trick work with HP Pavilion desktops too?
Most of them yes. And if you have logged into windows 10 on it the license is stored in your Microsoft account automatically and will be applied when you login.
Any ideas my dell 3020 has a three pin exhaust fan how would I fit an normal fan thanks
I’d look for an adapter. Often the third or fourth wires are an RPM signal. You could check amazon. Also PC Tech Hustle channel has a video on the fan wiring in his Lian Li Lancool swap video.
can we clone directly from SATA without using usb adapter
You can if you have a spare SATA port and power yes! The usb trick is sometimes easier and on most laptop drives gives you a portable usb backup then as well.
@@TheNetGuy Thank you for your reply and great Video ! I ve just ordered the MX500 1TB today , I've tested it, and it's so good boot time 20s...
Looking to buy this for my desktop I never bought SSD before just HDD I've only had this looks good for second storage.
If you can clone it and use as primary your machine will fly. Way faster than HDD. Then reformat your HDD as slower long term storage.
which is better in (speed ,life span and temperature at pressure) ?
Crucial MX500
or adata su650
or samsung 860 evo pro
Samsung is the best, but pricey. Crucial next and adata very last. I’ve had bad luck with them recently. Can’t go wrong with the mx500 and the 1TB is on sale today.
@@TheNetGuy what is the sale price?
I'm a ROOKIE. Can I load Windows into my new hard drive just from plugging it in next to my old hard drive?
You can either clone your existing windows over or install a fresh copy. Up to you.
I have an 860 PRO Samsung 1TB and I was thinking adding another ssd but Crucial but must people I know says it sucks...
They’re very solid. I still use mine every day as a video scratch disk and it’s awesome.
Can I use the SATA cables from my Optical drive for my new SSD..?
Yeah in a pinch this works great
Thank you !
Is that 250 ssd crucial mx500 good for gaming or the hdd 1000GB sataii
An SSD will be better for gaming. It will load much quicker.
This drive is retardedly good, after filling up all the m2 slots on my mobo i needed some more space for those huge lhorse porn collections i got, so i grabbed a mx500 and bruh even tho it's slower it more than keeps up while being used for transient file platforming or whatever other generative work.
Uh congratulations?
COOL!
Thank you!
Would this ssd for $103.49 be a good deal for the 1tb version? Pls reply
Yes
Did you get any commision by selling crucial ssd?
If you use the amazon links I make a very small amount on each sale yes. But it’s the same if you buy hand soap or a sandisk drive. Helps keep the channel going 👍. Even if I didn’t make a dime I still love these drives.
What cables are you using?
Sata cables :) I have 90 degree ones and straight ones. Locking and non.
What are the two wires you need for that ssd
One is for SATA power and the other is a SATA data cable. The power is the larger of the two cables.
nice i will deliver mine tomorrow.
You’ll love it!
@@TheNetGuy till it fails then you will curse the name crucial mx
hey crucial you old so and so!!!!
@@gtf2584 mine work fine but its at 91 percent state cuz i download on it everyday. love it!
Does anyone know if this ssd works with an acer aspire vx5-591g laptop?
It looks like it can the main drive. You also have an m2 slot for nvme.
@@TheNetGuy Thank you so much, now I know I don't need an SSD or hard drive, and that I can get an nvme
My Crucial MX500 SSD won’t boot. I go into BIOS and it’s selected as top priority on the boot menu, but I keep getting the message: “Reboot and select Proper Boot Device”
PLEASE HELP
Hey Dante - did you clone it or ???
@@TheNetGuy Yes I cloned it. It has the same space as my HDD
It’s hard to say. Do you have UEFI boot enabled?
@@DanteLicious Hey did it work for you? I am planning to buy this ssd
So I look up the mx 500 and here you are installing the drive that I just bought into the computer I just salvaged. ROFL.
Wrong title. Should read how to install Win 10.
Wd blue SA510 or Crusial MX 500
Great choices?
Is this still good?
Yep, and the pricing just keeps getting better and better 👍
Mx500 500GB or Kingston KC600 512GB ?
MX500 every day and twice on Sunday!
bro what about wd blue vs crucial mx500 pls reply
Crucial all the way my friend.
@@TheNetGuy thank you i will buy crucial thank you for advise ... subscribed
thx man
Do these work on hp laptops?
Yes, depending on the model. Send me the model number from the bottom of your laptop and I’d be happy to help you out and look up the compatible brands. Performance is day and night difference.
@@TheNetGuy Hp-15-af148ca is the model of the laptop. I got the 2.5inch Crucial MX500 ssd ik these are for laptops but not sure if it works on Hp laptops. Thanks
13:28 Man glitched 😂
I left it in there - man that was funny.
I have one with 2tb and it died on me. Just today.
Oh no! Hopefully under warranty. Let us know how it goes.
I'm completely lost. My PC doesn't of this caddy stuff
Not all PCs will. Many older dells did. If your PC doesn’t have this you may not need the adapter now.
Haha the comment section just full of ppl looking for computer troubleshooting. The Net Guy is not your IT support department!
True dat, though they have to start somewhere too :)

@@TheNetGuy My focus literally shifted from your review to that cable. Its good that you kept it, funny moment :D
Will you be tacking the question of where your computer hardware is made? The climate change conference has flagged up the ever increasing concern of pollution and climate change behaviours by major countries such as the usa, india, and china.
In Europe the UK is a central hub f computing and maybe chip component development.I would prefer to buy a item from europe who use sustainable energy than those countries who continue to use fossel fuel pollution to assemble hardware.Would you buy a laptop made in europe or coal polluting india and china?
these drives are cheap garbage dont waste your money samsung evo not far behind had 2 of those go bad within a year one month apart from each other
Apparently, you have never read the Amazon reviews. Lol!
Is it that bad?
@@chrispena8186 Hit or miss.
The same with almost every SSD. People have their brand affinity. I’ve had horrible luck with AData and won’t buy them again. Other people love them. Crucial has been good to me and price-to-performance it’s still a fantastic SSD with a great company behind it.
