They sit and listen very nicely and then applause between the songs. Be this good or bad. Some americans here show once again their ignorance about the outside world. And b) this is a festival where lots of people watch lots of bands. Most of them see the Melvins for the first time, hence the calm, maybe dazzled but most of all respectful reaction.
Tell that to the japanese clubs ive seen absolutely tear shit up. Japans metal music scene is downright dangerous sometimes. Some serious badassery goin on over there.

Then making another generalization about the temperaments of Japanese people at concerts or festivals is another ignorant finding and I would suggest you visit Japan sometime and go to diverse events. They definitely aren't all sitting, clapping, listening nicely. People are more than their country's culture, there are plenty of other sub-cultures inside. There are wild Japanese crowds and there are plenty that do a lot of dancing. I know because I've seen it. To me this 'listening crowed', doesn't look like their having fun, but whateve, maybe they are. One often weaves in & out of what the other is doing, although the footage/song above isn't the best example of that. Listen to the records that they made w/ the two-drummer lineup & watch some full gigs from that era, & you'll get it. I still like them more w/ just Dale on drums, though: 'Gluey Porch Treatments', 'Ozma', 'Bullhead', 'Eggnog', 'Lysol'. That's where it's at!
