Which is less variables/less exciting. Just watch Indy 2003 to find out about how 2 different tyre companies' approach to racing makes for more variety.
JakeTV - a major reason that happened was because competition was forcing michelin to focus so much on grip that the durability suffered. Simply put that blowout probably wouldn't have happened, at least not as severely, if Michelin or even Bridgestone dropped out following the 2003, or possibly even the 2004 season, as the tyre standardisation which would've ensued meant that development could be slowed to allow the tyres to be tested more thoroughly before being deployed in racing conditions.
The main reason why Bridgestone didn't have the issues was because Firestone was running the Indy 500 earlier that year and was able to give information about the circuit. Michelin didn't have access to that information because Firestone is Bridgestone's American company. It was a new diamond cut surface which cut the tyre and Bridgestone were able to compensate. If it was only Michelin, it would have been even worse as Michelin would still not have access to this information.

Head and Brawn are both pretty forceful characters. It's a bit like a lot of regulations, including the "no degree of flexibility" regulation for bodywork, in that the rule about the width of the tread applies at all times, but the FIA can only check it at scrutineering. Everyone knew the construction of the Michelin tyre meant it exceeded the allowed tread width during cornering, but Ferrari's assumption was that the when the car came in for post-race scrutineering and the tyre cooled, it would revert to its original shape and, when measured, it would be legal again. When it came to Ferrari's attention that the Michelin tyres weren't reverting to their pre-race dimensions after having completed a race stint, they asked the FIA to check the tread width in post-race scrutineering, which they're entitled to do. The Michelin runners had no grounds to complain about that since the tyre has to conform to the specified dimensions at all times. And for Patrick Head to say they've been using the same mould for two years is irrelevant, because the dimensions of the tyre when it was new wasn't in question. If you change the construction, the dimensions of the tyre may change with use, and that was the allegation.
You could have listened more carefully to what the michelin man said before writing this wall-of-text of crap. In today's F1 something like this could never happen, worst case scenario they would clarify the rule and make the change mandatory for next season. FIA forced michelin to build a completely new tyre in three weeks. Three freaking weeks. Today Pirelli prepare and build their tyres MONTHS in advance before the race. Michelin had to find a solution in three weeks, in no way they could have kept their performance for Monza. They ruined one of the most exciting and close season in the history of F1.

People often laugh when they don't have the arguments. That person could instead throw some strong points to Ross, but he only has innuendos and rich imagination. He's hiding his insecurities behind a laugh.
@supercas46 From an Atlas F1 interview with Pierre Dupasquier: "But most importantly, we did not modify our tyre - this year [2004] we ran the same tyre as we did last year [2003], before Hungary. The only thing we changed was added a clear mark on both sides of the tread, to make it more visible and the measurement easier. Other than that, we did not modify anything to it - we didn't even change the mould, it's the same mould."
@@Ferrarista1988 This quote is only speaking about dimensions not rubber compound. The tire was exactly the same in dimensions including size of tread. Rubber compounds changed race to race, same as today and they only run 1 manufacturer.
@@99EKjohn Clearly I was also talking of the dimentions. I find it really unlikely that Michelin would keep the same tire structure while being engaged in a very tight competition with Bridgestone.
@@Ferrarista1988 The dimensions were standardized, they couldn't change them according to the rules, so any changes would be noticeable quite quickly and easily. The dimensions should not have changed in any measurable way.
@@99EKjohn that is exactly why they where violating the rule: they had changed the dimensions in a non measurable way, or at least in a way that could not be detected by the fixed measuring procedure. When they changed it, the breach of the regulation emerged.
@rdtli Interestingly, on those terms, you're also wrong. Relatively speaking, Brawn GP is the most successful F1 team, with a 100% constructors and drivers championship win rate.
well....we had a bunch of people saying ferrari are whiny pussies, and then we had the exploding michelins at indianapolis. maybe michelins were cutting their tyre too fine.
Back when the FIA was Ferrari International Assistance. It wasn't just one occasion when this happened but with multiple interpretations of rules they got away with. This was when Ferrari realised Bridgestone were falling seriously behind.
@MrPoundNote you say that other teams let their drivers race each other but you watch at the end of the season when its vettel v hamilton in the final race of the championship there'll be team orders flying left right and centre. the fact that jean todt is the president of the fia has little/no effect on the decision made yesterday he was voted into that post, it is a rule that has to be changed so that either it is scrapped or a much harsher punishment is given
Brawn is the only guy amongst those 4 to have ended his tenure with his team (s).... without any of his decisions putting his team back. Briatore and Crashgate, Patrick Head and his ego play over Adrian Newey and Ron Dennis....where to begin lol
I don't see how anyone can possibly side with ferrari in this. If you have to wait that long to make a complaint against your rivals, yet before you didn't give a crap when you were oh so dominant, then something is seriously wrong.
@MrPoundNote Todt being the president of FIA has nothing to do with penalties given out in race tracks, is not his job, there's stewards for that, he doesn't penalize any event that takes place under FIA being Rally, GT or whatever... it works like that in any company, the president has other jobs, and like any other president of any company, or organization, his job is being monitored by many.
The most blatant and rigged championship ever - full stop. With 3 races to go Ferrari cries foul to the FIA who then reneges on their agreement to Michelin in order to gift Ferrari/Schumacher with the title. And people call this a sport? In Hungary Ferrari couldn't even make it to the top 8 due to the Michelin dominance and as soon as they were forced to change their tire widths, the Scuderia wins the remaining 3 races of the season. Kimi Raikkonen is the true champion of 2003. Michael has 2 WDC's in the pocket thanks to the FIA - 1994 & 2003
tbh, this didn't really give Ferrari that much of an advantage, while yes they did win the final 3 races, let's break those 3 races down. Ferrari whilst yes won in Italy, they didn't dominate the race as Montoya who was on Michelins gave them a run for their money. USA, Michael was lucky to win that race because of the wet conditions and the superior Bridgestone intermediates, when it was dry Kimi who was using Michelins was unstoppable. And in Japan if you think about it, Rubens was lucky to win that race and even have pole because in qualifying it was mixed conditions and on top of that, when the race got going, Montoya passed him at spoon and probably would've won the race had his car not broke down. Even Alonso was harrying him. From what I gathered, nothing got done to the width of the tyres from Michelin, it only effected their development in Monza. The last 2 races they were fine.
@@gt5man21 do you realize the win in Monza was still crucial to win the championship? Even if the last two races weren't an issue for the michelin teams, ferrari still went from a horrible performance in hungary to win the next race thanks to this political gift by fia. A magnificent season ruined by the ferrari/ross brawn political power. Bwoah.
@@ChrisMcLaren666 I never said the win wasn't crucial for him to winning the championship, my point was that the Bridgestones didn't have that much of an advantage at Monza as people are making out as Montoya on Michelins still gave them a run for their money. He would've probably had a crack at the win had it not been for Frentzen getting in the way.
@@gt5man21 Are you a little touched in the head? It didn't change much? Haha. Ferraris would have been lucky to finish in the points in any of the last 3 races, without them and FIA cheating to make up new rules for tyres. The championship would have been a three way fight in Japan. With either Montoya or Raikkonen taking it. No doubt about it. Even with the tyre change Michael could barely get a point in Japan. Montoya wouldn't have been taken out by Barrichello in USA and also have a penalty when he should have been pitting for wets. FIA did everything they could to have Ferrari win
So ferrari could have complained at imola 2001, but then they decided, no we'll wait until barrichello has 2 successive reitrements in a row, and when michael schumacher has 1 eighth place finish and one seventh place finish. Not during the season where we are dominant. No let's wait until we're backed into a corner.
look the michellin tyres would get a few inches wider when there used during the races and ferrari whent bitching to the fia so michellin would change the tyre. so then michellin had to make new type of tyre for the rest of the season and thats why schumacher won in 2003 and yea ferrari were on there asss when its accure cuz there werent winning shit you can look the seasons standings from 2003 after hungary they started to wing again.right after michellin had to change there tyre
@bilalp1 YOU RE WRONG MATE...IF YOU PUT IN A RELATIVE WAY...MCLAREN IS THE MOST SUCCESFULL..THEY VE STARTED ON THE 70 S ..AND FERRARI ON THE 50´S ...SO YOU RE WRONG. MCLAREN FOREVER.
Typical Ferrari : they were losing the champ', so they complained about an technical advantage which was okay all the time and now banned by the FIA because Ferrari said so. They did the same with McLaren in 98 with their breaking system and Renault in 2006 with mass dumper
MastaMS21 yeah, Ferrari should just sit there and let other teams get away with cheating. Don't blame them , blame Michelin for not adhering to the rules. oh and FYI, it was McLaren who protested the mass damper in 2006, not Ferrari
Considering Ferrari got Bridgestone to make the tyres specifically to fit their car and their car only, they are the last people that can cry about unfair advantages.
There was no rule stopping other teams from doing the same with Michelin. Whine about Ferrari all you want, but they weren't the ones breaking the rules.
Michelin wasn't cheating. Everybody knew Michelin made wider tyres in 2003 and during the whole summer, FIA said they were legal. Then, after Hungary when Ferrari made his worst perf of the year, they suddenly claim Michelin tyres are illegal and then FIA decided to change the rule in order to make Michelin illegal. Nobody can deny this fact : FIA was Ferrari International Assistance for years and even not F1 fans saw that. (Yes it was McLaren who protested in 2006, my bad. But Ferrari was once again the team which benefit from this)
Ross Brawn: 8 Constructor's Championships, enough said. He totally put Patrick Head in his place. People still mad McLaren and Williams couldn't beat Ferrari even when the FIA changed the rules basically every year from 2002 onwards to break Ferrari's dominance, which only happened in 2005 after they found the one weak link, the Bridgestone tyres construction which wasn't suited to do a whole race distance, so the FIA made it mandatory in 2005 for tyres to do a full race distance...
Do you not understand what happened here? Ferrari and FIA made up a new tyre ruling because they were getting beat. Changed it with a few races left so Ferrari would win. If that's not cheating I don't know what is
Back when F1 was a serious sport, not a circus full of clowns. Only Kimi and Alonso are left and when these two leave for good, F1 will go further down

Exactly! Not to mention that we know who broke the rules in the tyre wars, even if unintentionally, and yet it is Ross who is under the fire here.
Plus rules about difuzer in last minute in December. Witch directly hamper Ferrari because fundamental architecture of their gearbox cannot use new difuzer volume effectively and redesign were necessarily.
@@alesksander shits like this happens every time, did you remember berillium's ban againts mercedes?
@@mregaz124 Yeah ofc. BUt some times late rule chages are directly aimaed at specific teams and areas in witch are they good. Hence Ferrari in 2004. :d Now we had 2022 aimed at RB, but backfired spetacullary, Also there are examples for 2009, 2010, 2012, 2017, 2020. all examples where rules are just tools to scrambble competition under or in name safety, cost or "spirit of rules". :D Its part of "formula" in Formula 1.
as Italian i must face everytime with the tifosi complaining crap like "fia did it on purpose to stop ferrari blablablabla" but then they seem to forget what fia did for them back in thise years, especially in 2003.
imho i think the 2005 was just a simple vengeance from michelin.

@kathrynashworth1 Because it feels good, you get that thirst feeling.
F1 drama at its best.... I miss those days....
yes i have to keep laughing..
People often laugh when they don't have the arguments. That person could instead throw some strong points to Ross, but he only has innuendos and rich imagination. He's hiding his insecurities behind a laugh.
@kathrynashworth1
To comfort himself (bodylanguage :)) as he was kinda confronted by Patrick Head.
@Firatjik You made me laugh again... Hahahaha
Could you please give the sounce od this? I find really unlikely that Michelin used a one-year-old spec of tyres during the tyre war with Bridgestone.
ROBBED
@rdtli Interestingly, on those terms, you're also wrong. Relatively speaking, Brawn GP is the most successful F1 team, with a 100% constructors and drivers championship win rate.
well....we had a bunch of people saying ferrari are whiny pussies, and then we had the exploding michelins at indianapolis. maybe michelins were cutting their tyre too fine.
Ron and Flavio look like 2 scarecrows...
lmao when Ferrari had radioactive material on their cars
Wait what?
What??
Ilmor used cancerogenic material beryllium for pistons and conrods. If rules dont stipulate anything. Sky is the limit.

Back when the FIA was Ferrari International Assistance. It wasn't just one occasion when this happened but with multiple interpretations of rules they got away with. This was when Ferrari realised Bridgestone were falling seriously behind.
Explain 2005 then
so if Fia is Ferrari International Assistance, explain 2005 with that stupid rules that come only to stop them...
F1's neutral side. XD
@MrPoundNote you say that other teams let their drivers race each other but you watch at the end of the season when its vettel v hamilton in the final race of the championship there'll be team orders flying left right and centre. the fact that jean todt is the president of the fia has little/no effect on the decision made yesterday he was voted into that post, it is a rule that has to be changed so that either it is scrapped or a much harsher punishment is given
@hhJACK92 that was ross brawn and jean todt's motto
@brucecheewai Absolutely true, so do I.
I would have kept laughing.
This video was uploaded before Brawn won a constructor's championship
no shit?
Yes Ross, I do have to keep laughing. You are lying through your teeth to disadvantage the Michelin teams and steal Kimi's championship.
It was never Kimi's title, calm down
Ron want cheeseburger
Typical Ferrari politics and Brawn is a politician
4 sharp switched on Operator's
Brawn is the only guy amongst those 4 to have ended his tenure with his team (s).... without any of his decisions putting his team back. Briatore and Crashgate, Patrick Head and his ego play over Adrian Newey and Ron Dennis....where to begin lol
ross brawn talks like he is high
@Firatjik The whole scene looks like its happening in Azkaban!
@rdtli Wrong, Brawn GP is most successful if you're gonna count it that way.

Yup. Agreed.
But i think you're either a fan, or not...I find alot of people jump on the bandwagon...
@kathrynashworth1 no, I think he's scratching his armpits
I think if ferrari would use michellin tyres in 05 And 06 schumacher would have won the championship those 2 yrs
Their car wasn't designed to suit them, so hard to say.
@FreeYourMind911 LOL
I don't see how anyone can possibly side with ferrari in this. If you have to wait that long to make a complaint against your rivals, yet before you didn't give a crap when you were oh so dominant, then something is seriously wrong.
Poor Ross he seems very uncomfortable poor guy, it must have been somewhat embarrassing.
Ross smashed it that day
I know Brawn is a legend but he got the FIA to rig the Championship in his favour and he new it. The journalist was right to laugh
"There were two..four, four people present. Four from the FIA and two of us"
So I guess that's six people, not two, err four :)
Looooool 😂🤣😂
@@tomwells8093the same Fia Who stopped Ferrari in 2005....
Can someone explain the context of this controversy?
look the michellin tyres would get a few inches wider when there used during the races and ferrari whent bitching to the fia so michellin would change the tyre. so then michellin had to make new type of tyre for the rest of the season and thats why schumacher won in 2003 and yea ferrari were on there asss when its accure cuz there werent winning shit you can look the seasons standings from 2003 after hungary they started to wing again.right after michellin had to change there tyre
"and thats why schumacher won in 2003"
BS
If we don't have it on our car, it must be illegal.
That's the Ferrari motto!
Ferrari wins some back then & lose lot these days.

Fast forward the rubbish. Action happens 1:54.
But Ferrari was once again the team which benefit from this)
MastaMS21 f1 fans knew the FIA was up Ferrari's arse. It's Ferrari fans that don't admit it 😆
Looks like Brawn wasn’t been criticized much those days ...... a little tirannic
If that's not cheating I don't know what is
Ferrari are so full of BS
But now Ferrari is back in their original position ( nowhere near to the best teams ). So finally their cheting paid off :)

Williams and McLaren and Renault are even behind, so the wrong mentality is not always in the ferrari garage. Sorry my friend
