- Twenty-four-year-old Payton Shires now faces over 28 years behind bars after pleading guilty to multiple sex crimes charges. Shires was arrested in October 2023, after investigators found explicit texts, photos, and videos of her sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy. Shires, who was employed as a social worker, was first introduced to the boy when she began counseling him. Law&Crime’s Sierra Gillespie hears from criminal defense attorney and sex crimes expert Brian Claypool about the intricacies of the case.

A lot of people. Because she's a woman. It's VERY common whenever we talk about women committing crimes for people to basically argue "oh, yeah. I mean, she's guilty of a terrible crime, but think about her future". Really infantilizes women in general when we talk about adult women like they're children who shoplifted.

They're talking about it to put into perspective just how screwed she is if she has to register. They're mentioning it because, like he said, a lot of these offenders end up just getting rehired elsewhere without anyone knowing the reason why their last job didn't work out and not just that she resigned. We need to know how or why she could possibly be back on the streets around our kids if we're not careful. Definitely isn't being spoken about with sympathy
All of this is what the judge has to consider when sentencing a criminal. But one thing this lawyer fails to mention is the severity of what the woman did. I guarantee this child wasn't her first victim. Child predators don't just go after one kid and never have issues previous or after. Maybe there could be situations where someone wouldn't be on the registry, but this isn't.

An article said they got together after he served 5 years in prison because he plead guilty to child endangerment when he was accused of drugging and assaulting a 14-year-old girl when he was 19 years old. They are definitely a pair that deserve each other, but their poor child deserves none of it.

I know two men, who were SA by a female family member around age 13/14. Both of them ended up doing a jail sentence due to their mental issues after they became adults. It drove them “crazy”. One became an alcoholic at age 18, wrecked, friend died as a result, and he did five years. The second one, shot his abuser and he did 15 years. Boys do suffer damage from SA from females.
There’s no difference children should be kept safe from these kind of people but it’s hard when they intentionally take jobs in education and social care. Predators right from the start.

Sounds like there were definitely poor boundaries and it is important for therapists/counselors to do their own work (many of us get into this work because of our own stuff). There may be a mental health condition, I just don’t like when that is the first thing we jump to when someone could just have broken the law and not have a diagnosis.

I really don't care if she has issues finding work in the future, she knew the risks when she did what she did! her job was to protect children, not harm them. Yes, it's interesting and depressing to know why some of these cases never make it to trial. Imagine these poor kids, having to relive all the sordid details on the witness stand. Particularly in this case, where the selfish hag tried to guilt the boy into compliance, and with a gun no less, threatening his mother's life.
She went to the boy’s house and threatened self-end as a manipulation tactic, not because she was feeling anything other than the desire to maintain psychological control over others.
Shires was for the death penalty for P-philes and her fiancé r-worded a minor and went to jail and they had a 1 year old together. That poor baby.

Social workers have too much power. I was a nurse and a substance abuse counselor but what i didn't understand was when i worked as a counselor, i was the only employee that actually had a degree in addiction counseling. Everyone else was a social worker working in my same position . They didn't even have training in addiction recovery. Just resources or the ability to use their power to take children away. They literally used that power to scare patients. But none of the patients wanted one of the social workers as a counselor.

It’s a tale as old as time. Statistically, the numbers of female perpetrators haven’t increased. What has increased is the media coverage of it - which creates the illusion that it’s happening more than before. Either way, it’s terrifying that this occurs so often.

I dealt with this first hand except my children’s father and the social worker was of age! He knew she liked him, she was older so he gave her attention and in return she made me out to be a villain in court!!! It took me a year to get proof that my rights had been violated and all they did was take her off my case and give my kids back with zero apology

One would hope so, but unfortunately, there's a nationwide shortage of qualified social workers. It's a draining, depressing job. The agency probably had to hire whomever they could get, which is of course NO excuse for this sordid situation.
