WE ACCIDENTALLY DISCOVERED AN EASY WAY TO DIG A DRAINAGE DITCH.

  • Just a few weeks ago we demonstrated four different ways to dig a drainage ditch (or swale, or trench). Today we set out to dig two rather short swales with our front bucket after it worked so well and made such a clean ditch. But the ground was super hard and it wasn't going quick enough. So we decided to throw on the Stump Bucket and see if it was up for the job.

    I got to say I’ve been a heavy equipment operator for 30 years and I had my doubts about your stump bucket working for ditching .and I am quite impressed with the job you did with that stump bucket you may have made a whole new market that is a great job you should be proud of that and the smile on your face while you’re doing it is priceless how’s the new shop coming by the way great video

      I recently bought a middle buster to use to install some underground wires. Wanted a sub soiler but $50 more with the smaller tooth even though it's built the same, go figure, and was amazed at how fast and how well it will make a ditch

    Courtney, if you install a couple of skid plate shoes on the end of the back plate of the stump bucket, could you use the tractor in float mode to control your depth of cut??

    • @Lackieestatesfarm
      @Lackieestatesfarm 2 года назад +2

      Doubt float mode would be of use. Once you put it in float the loader tends to try and fold up under the tractor because there’s no pressure in the cylinders to hold it in place

    • @ericcrockett479
      @ericcrockett479 2 года назад

      Not really because your depth is more controlled by the bucket curl than the loader lift

    We’ve always used the potato plow for drainage ditches. Quick and easy. Sometimes we go back and use a garden hoe to remove the loose dirt. A long ditch we scrape it out clean with a scraper blade or front end loader bucket . Sure beats making a mess with a backhoe

    An indicator to the top of the Stump bucket frame at the same angle as the bottom of the bucket might help would also like to see a bolt on flat cutting edge for trenching in softer ground or bottom finishing. Great video showing what it can do.

  • @lcee6592
    @lcee6592 2 года назад +1

    That is impressive! An implement meant to pop tree stumps also trenches. I would imagine if you had a single ripper shank on the 3 point to break hard ground initially, the stump bucket would be even more effective.
    (I will purchase a stump bucket eventually and I have to say your design is a front runner.) 🏃

  • @osagejon8972
    @osagejon8972 2 года назад

    I thought you were going to use the stump bucket when I saw the title on the video. Nice job with it. A single bottom plow works pretty well for pionering a ditch.

  • @woodcutter4670
    @woodcutter4670 2 месяца назад

    Thinking about doing the same thing, putting drainage ditch alongside my driveway. However I am thinking about using a single bottom three point hitch plow.
    That I not only get the ditch made but fold the material back onto the driveway. Not to mention I won't be stressing the loader.

  • @MacBailey
    @MacBailey 2 года назад

    The bucket worked well for this. Another maybe unintended benefit for use is that when the bucket is "flat" and not digging, the sides of the backplate made an excellent vertical blade to spread out and flatten the piles of material to the sides, almost like a little dozer blade.

  • @arlisspropertyservicesllc5943

    Something tells me that ditch is going to grow much larger as the years go by. 😉😉

  • @Harry-zz2oh
    @Harry-zz2oh 2 года назад

    Another tool to use would be a middle buster potato plow. It can be set for shallow cutting but it will break up the hard soil. Once done, you can use the FEL to do the rest of the ditch with shallow slopes leading into the ditch.
    To "see" your angles, add a piece of rebar to the top of the stump bucket on each end. Then you'll have an idea of what angle you have on the bucket.

  • @dstafford2200

    Awesome video Courtney been really looking at a small tractor for keeping up with my driveway and other projects around the farm. Really like that darn little bucket to that thing would be handy.

    • @Harry-zz2oh
      @Harry-zz2oh 2 года назад

      Learn from my mistake. Do not buy a tractor which is too small. List on paper all the "things" you think or know you want to use the tractor to do. Get some feedback from others and then decide what size range you want. Talk to Courtney or other people in your area and, of course, do some shopping.
      I bought a small subcompact Case 24DXe tractor years ago. It has worked okay but it is too small to do a lot of the tasks I wanted to use it for. In addition, I wanted a backhoe but the tractor I bought is not capable of handling a backhoe. It is tippy as well as not having enough power, which I think is in the gearing. Best of luck finding the tractor which is "just right" for you.

    Great idea and very timely for me as I have over 3,000' of drainage ditch to make this summer. I'm definitely getting one of your stump buckets to do this project instead of using my backhoe.
    I'd like to see you try something else that might simplify and speed up part of that process you did: from the first, place the faceplate of the bucket on the ground to act as a skid and then just tip the point of the bucket down slightly to take a few inches on the first pass, go back and tip it down a little more to go deeper each pass. By doing this, adjusting ONLY the attack angle of the digger, the faceplate should serve as a skid and guard against digging in and avoid the constant stop and go and adjustment. Looks like when you are trying to adjust depth with the elevation of the bucket, then when you go forward the angle digs in going deeper and you pull it up again. Could that be avoided by skidding the faceplate on the surface and only adjusting the angle of attack of the bucket to get your depth?
    I'm also thinking on my project, once I've gotten the primary depth of the ditch to the maximum the stump bucket will dig it, then drop the right hand wheels of my tractor into the ditch and use the box blade to cut the edges back to give me a wider ditch to that depth. This would carry more stormwater runoff which is what I am trying to do and also make a less severe ditch so I can drive across it with a UTV or truck. By doing this, I would have the 19" deep ditch but sloping out 8' on each side. Using the Stump Bucket first to do this initial ditch instead of a backhoe will speed this process immeasurably!
    Funny, I had about decided not to buy your stump bucket as I'd removed almost all the trees I need to clear (about 600 over the last 4 years) and wondered whether it made sense to buy it for just the few remaining I need to remove. But using this to create drainage ditches... BRILLIANT!
    btw... I love your videos. All of them, even when 75% of them aren't directly applicable to my work.

    Wow, I think you almost made my hamster fall of the wheel getting more ideas with that stump bucket! I could see using that for planting taters and coming back with a hiller or row hipper to cover up. Then instead of tilling a 4ft wide section like I did for planting 100+ spruce trees, I coulda taken nice swipe 100 to 300ft long and come back to bury bare root trees with the loose soil and finish the clean up with my 455 and broom pushing dirt back into the trench.

    Teeth on that stump bucket makes a difference when the ground is hard. You need to design a v-wedge to mount on the 3-point to dig a ditch. We used to have a v-ditcher/plow to dig waterways to irrigate our fields in the panhandle of Oklahoma but this ditch was about 6' across and about 3 ft deep. Smaller version would work perfect.

    The stump bucket did a nice job cutting the ditch, for sure. What's all that loose soil in the bottom going to do, though? Seems like it'll form a series of small dams as it washes. Here in Georgia, for the most part, we've got red clay. It you cut that ditch here, you'd have solid, smooth side walls.
