Lawrence reminds me so much of my best friend. He looked like him, acted like him, had the same sense of humor, and it's good to watch these videos cause it's like he's still with us. So thank you Lawrence, he's not dead by the way he just moved to Boston which I hear is like dying.
lachlan kirwan I suspected this in one of the videos this week that was posted where she tells Lawrence or someone "you dont know whats going on in here" pointing to her belly
AlexKillinEm I think that was a joke about her being barren haha. Imo, it makes more sense, from a career standpoint, for her not to have kids right now - but then again I always thought reggae came before ska so what do I know
Hard netting started as an awkward little segment and now it's a wonderful and passionate moment I expect at the end of every podcast just because I love their insights and debates.
Despite only being 19 and not relating to much you guys talk about (when talking about your lives) I still am very interested, I could genuinely listen to Adam and everyone talk about the troubles of buying a house for at least an hour or two
Open world game design is something that's been really interesting to follow over the last few years. Back when some games were noted to be open world rather than sandbox, I remember a big complaint a lot of early open world games received was a lack of 'things to do' (see Assassin's Creed 1). In somewhat knee jerk-jerk reaction against this, and also to inflate the claims of "hundreds of hours of content" a lot of open world games have become sort of bloated with tasks and objectives that are sort of mundane, detached or self-serving. So many of the missions to upgrade stuff in Ubisoft games (and other open world games) like you say become obsolete after the first few, and because there's a lack of variety between them, a lot of the desire to complete all the 'hunting challenges' (or any other open world activity substitute) come purely from a completionist, checklist mindset. And because many developers want fans to see as much content as possible (and fans want to easily be able to find tasks in game) they became marked and easily tracked by players on the map. You can see the evolution of this change from Assassin's Creed 1 - 2 where the collectables in 1 could not be marked on the map, whereas in 2 you could eventually buy a map to see all of them. The problem is that a world feeling 'empty' or needing 'stuff to do' for an open-world/ sandbox game is that the solution of filling it with side objectives only tangentially useful to the main game, runs somewhat counter to the desire for a sandbox experience. For some subsets of players, it will be hard to ignore the checklist nature of these tasks and it can become easy to lose sight of the 'playground' aspect of Sandbox games and get tunnel visioned into completing the tasks, looking at the bottom left corner of the screen for 75% of your gameplay navigating from waypoint to waypoint. What I think is interesting is that we've started to turn a corner in open world design in how to actually apply an open world properly and move away from players seeing the content as busy work. Games like BOTW having no in-game markers, forcing the player to catalogue and choose what's important to them to complete really add to that, and having such a large number of shrines/korok seeds that it is somewhat obvious that players aren't expected to get them all, make approaching the world much more liberating. Can you imagine how much worse BOTW would be if everything had a marker on the mini map? The Witcher 3 while not perfect (suffers eventually from a bit of icon clutter), manages to remedy a lot of these open world woes by having practically every piece of side content have an enjoyable self-contained story that is rewarding to its own end. Final Fantasy XV (which the design team was heavily inspired by the Witcher 3 btw) has a really compelling gameplay loop of day/night, camping, and eating, that helps to put the tasks of the game into a more relevant context for the play and sets up a pretty good cut off point for many players play sessions. It's much easier to feel accomplished in an open world game when you're reviewing some stupid photos of your escapades at a camp fire. Red Dead Redemption for me is an interesting case because I think the original had a really pleasing amount of content. I might be looking through slightly rose-tinted glasses, but no tasks really felt excruciatingly dragged out, although that may in part be due to how comfy just taking in the ambience of RDR can be. I really hope that the sequel takes cues from the original on that front and doesn't feel bloated or dragged out to complete, 100%ing the original felt like just how long that process should take for me. I noticed that I conflated open world with sandbox a lot here, although I would consider them pretty separate terms. Many open world games don't really qualify as sandbox, and I reckon that being a linear game doesn't preclude a sandbox experience. Thinking of these two in the same way, might lead to a lot of mechanics and ideas that don't belong in a game being implemented out of habit.
Quick note about Shari's Berries. If no one over the age of 21 is on hand to sign for them at the time of their delivery, they don't leave the box. You either have to wait for them to try again, or, pick up the box yourself from the UPS location they're kept in. I sent my Mom one of their standard boxes (1/2 dozen berries) to her home address. It was her birthday today. It was meant to be a fun surprise, but, it's turned into a bit of a hassle. The package was delivered (on the correct day) while she was at work. No one else was home. Long story short - my dad's taking the day off to pick them up at our closest UPS shipping center tomorrow. At 34+ dollars it really wasn't worth the trouble. It's just chocolate covered fruit. The signing policy may have been part of the terms of service, but, it's a pain in the ass regardless. Just make sure your intended recipient is going to be home on the chosen day of shipment....if....you actually choose to try these.
I prefer being able to see all of them. In the office they're so cramped in one small shot and usually one of them is way in the back. And then the game or video they're watching is covering half of Bruce and James.
I wanna say thank you guys for all the great content you put out. As a fan of you guys for what? Four or five years? I can not tell you how much appreciation I have for you all. Life is has been a struggle recently and your content gets me through the day with a smile. Seriously. Thank you guys.
Far cry 2, 3 and 4 are all in the same universe. A CIA agent called Willis Huntley is a major plot character to 3 and 4, who also makes references to 2.
Love Dude Soup. Also, I love the fact that sometimes we have it in the office and sometimes on set. It's variety and the podcasts turn out a little different. Keep it up, I'm thinking about finally getting a FIRST membership with my raise soon. Funhaus was the channel that tipped me over.
Not to suck on the phallus of Funhaus too much, but the opening exchange at 39:54 to 40:05 for E & L's indie corner was fantastic. The way Elyse without missing a beat follows up on Lawrence's comment in the same format and then they nonchalantly end the discussion immediately was incredibly funny. I'm always amazed at how well these guys play off each other that it seems like these segments are written out when in fact they're just people making fun discussions.
I live in Upstate South Carolina. I bought a HUD repo house for 32k. The owner had died and the bank possessed it then it got passed on to HUD. I spent 8k fixing it up. It's appraised at 63k now. The trick to buying a house is not buying some overpriced beyond your means to afford house. I own my house out right. No Bank owns it. I bought something I had the money to buy and I worked hard on it myself to double it's worth.
I think Blood Dragon probably was my favorite Far Cry game, honestly. As someone who's not too big of a fan of the dragged out, filler-ridden open world games it was refreshing with a shorter, super-game-y one that just got straight to the point.
Every single far cry has been excelent, and i actually liked far cry 3 and blood dragon way more than any rockstar game, but i`m still going to buy both because i really much loved red dead redemption.
Mauricio Soares to each their own I guess. The only far cry I enjoyed was 3. Theres really nothing new to expect to the far cry series. Red dead redemption though I'll be expecting a lot from rockstar.
Of course, my thing is that i know that if the game is made by rockstar is going to be from good to excellent, whilst if it`s made by ubisoft it may be not that good but it also may be a fucking masterpiece, but i do admit that i don`t really much like the rest of the ubisoft games at least of the last few years, far cry seems to be the only series they make an effort to make it good.
I'm completely on James's side as far as needing to feel like I'm working towards something. 100 percenting a game almost never means much to me but if a game can make me feel like I'm working towards something, the best armor, maximum hearts, etc, I get way more into it.
QueenPerrysLeftNipple lmao are you aware gta v is on the same engine as 4? Look at them both on PS3 or 360 and tell me again gta v single player was lazy. Even without all the mechanical improvements from gta 4 to 5 it'd still be an amazing work of effort to get it to run as smooth as it does. It's anything but lazy
you have to be a troll. The single player was amazing and cost millions to make and produce. The amount of detail and effort put in was nothing short of phenomenal and they deserve your respect, bitch.
I know precisely where that Triple X novel came from: a Mckay's used bookstore in Tennessee (either the Chattanooga, Knoxville, or Nashville location). I'd recognize that "$1.50" label anywhere.
Man, I just can't get over how good everyone has been looking now since they started. Elyse with that elegant and smoking hot brand new look and haircut. James with that increasingly more chiseled and shaped body. Adam your hairstyle and beard style change is just fantastic look incredibly handsome. Lawrence man you have come such a long way and are just looking fan-fucking-tastic since you started the channel. Bruce, it's good to see you still here buddy.
I'd like to think BigKneeLover met a girl with the biggest knees this past Christmas. They're both so happy to have found acceptance in one another that they're just enjoying their time together. Make no mistake though, she is his new muse. Expect a surge of new artwork soon.
You know, people are always saying how beautiful Elyse looks on videos (and this episode is no exception!), but I have to say, everyone here this episode looks amazingly stunning! Maybe it's the lighting, but I think everyone here looks their best!
30:07 "Elyse, soon to be mother..." Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on... Wha.. What's going on here? I thought she was as dry as the Sahara desert?
There is actually a few references to other Far Cry games and other Ubisoft games in Far Cry 3 and 4. Far Cry 3's "The Lost Expedition" questline is all about the research done on the island that eventually lead to the creation of the animus in Assassin's Creed. In Far Cry 3 and 4, Hurk and Willis are recurring characters. In Far Cry 4, Hurk talks about "Tat-bros", and he references Jason (from FC3) and the protagonist from Far Cry 1 (Who's name I can't remember.)
There actually are a few Easter eggs connecting the far cry universe with the assassins creed universe. In far cry 3 there's a hidden bunker with the assassins logo on it and there are a few things here and there in watchdogs as well. Its actually pretty cool if you look into it
Westerns are my all time favourite genre. Grew up watching them with my Dad. So hopefully more western games keep coming out. Cant wait for RDR2. I enjoyed Primal a lot more than I ever thought I would. E3 is looking incredibly promising.
i'm turning 22 this year and bought my house about 2 years ago give or take, when i was 19. it was actually quite easy i thought. good luck to you adam.
Rockstar Games once made a licensed game for that old late 70's movie, The Warriors and it kicked ass! I wouldn't mind to see more current-gen video game versions of older movies.
I thought there was a connection between Far Cry games. Wasn't there something in Primal about when the main character's blessed with the power to tame beasts, it passed down to the main characters in the earlier games? I can't remember if that was a random fan theory or if that was canonical to the Far Cry lore.
FarCry seems to always take place in an area where there are is ongoing conflict and you're always the resolution regardless of what decisions you make during the process. Always the saviour of the people.
Congrats on the house Adam I got my Real Estate License in Texas a year ago and I feel your pain on trying to negotiate with the seller to fix something after inspection I hope it works out man!
Persona 5 isnt a very sandboxy game, but I think that one nailed the aspect of side missions and storyline. Every activity you do can either boost your stats or give you important items or even give you new abilities and mechanics to enjoy the "main" dungeon crawler aspect of the game. Heck, I'm almost at the end of the game and I keep finding minor social link stories I can follow, that are completely optional and easy to miss but they open new battle mechanics that you would never imagine they are even there. And then there's the fact that all of those side stories are nicely written, just like another game that nails the side quests: The Witcher 3. So there are ways of really making those optional things useful and fun and important for the game. Not only the Ubisoft Type of side distractions that are repetitive and have mostly no impact on the over all experience.
I can't wait to climb water towers to reveal more of the map

Lawrence is the king of condescending comments
With that hat and all the condescension I was getting a strong TotalBiscuit vibe
Thomas Middleton "condescension" there's a new word for me
The Jrr no Adam is pretty condescending but Lawrence just out does him
Like skyrim with revolvers
david So... Skyrim with guns?
MultiRv90 no, revolvers. Don't negate this person's completely original observation.
Daeg You're right
Oh boy! We're opening this can again.
Adam's killed hard netting
"It's like Skyrim but with guns!" -Adam 2012

He's the one who made that meme?
GhostOfWar Oh, how my baby boy regrets it.
Back when they were funnier.
Never let him live it down. We still love you Adam.
Adam is completely unimpressed with the Tesla but is in awe of these dudes slapping each other with juggling pins.

Hahahahaha, you make a very good point Geralt, I would also add Peak's beard before he shaved and Bruce's ska an blading abilities
lachlan kirwan wait so I heard that and went straight to the comments, is this a thing???
How is this not the top comment?!?!?!?!??!
lachlan kirwan I suspected this in one of the videos this week that was posted where she tells Lawrence or someone "you dont know whats going on in here" pointing to her belly
AlexKillinEm I think that was a joke about her being barren haha. Imo, it makes more sense, from a career standpoint, for her not to have kids right now - but then again I always thought reggae came before ska so what do I know
Remember, Adam is responsible for the "Skyrim with guns" quote in all the far cry 3 trailers
Hard netting started as an awkward little segment and now it's a wonderful and passionate moment I expect at the end of every podcast just because I love their insights and debates.
am I that high or Lawrence just pulled out an xXx book and started reading?
I mean that's just Larry yeah but man that cracked me up
Lawrence is living his dream. A job he enjoys and allows him to be able to afford to do all the things he wants. A fucking inspiration
Despite only being 19 and not relating to much you guys talk about (when talking about your lives) I still am very interested, I could genuinely listen to Adam and everyone talk about the troubles of buying a house for at least an hour or two
Elise isn't going to be a mother? is she?....
king budley so she's gonna be an aunt and a mother on the same day.
Story time with Sonntag is just the best
I like watching Bruce's face as he stares off into the distance when he doesn't have to say anything. I wonder what he thinks about...
Far Cry 5 will be like Red dead redemption with guns.
?
But rdr 2 have guns..
i know m8
what
Don't you love when Lawrence is Lawrence and goes rogue?
in this episode adam becomes the old man that yells at a cloud
Lawrence never left the computer. He's actually a hologram projection, he's still living inside that laptop in the old IG office
1:07:18 James with that awesome definition and analogy. #LawrenceLet'sHaveARuleHereSomewhere

Far Cry: Ubisoft, Red Dead: Rockstar. enough said
Kornel Paroczai i thought you ment that Red Dead would be better but then i saw your Assassin's Creed profile pic so now I'm confused
Just a Random Guy I agree, I don't think enough was said.

Good to see the dudes back on set
You know, this is barely a competition Red Dead is Rockstar and Rockstar always win.
you mean like that LAZY garbage gta5 single player was?

I learned so much about how to make myself look like a beautiful celebrity with this video, thanks!

I cant wait till one of you guys are in a movie. Id watch the shit outta that.
I remember playing King Kong on the Game Cube
always on the "lose the limb for cool metal" train!
There actually are a few Easter eggs connecting the far cry universe with the assassins creed universe. In far cry 3 there's a hidden bunker with the assassins logo on it and there are a few things here and there in watchdogs as well. Its actually pretty cool if you look into it

I thought it was "Rango" that revived the Wild West genre.
I with you lawdog, hearing people eat is the worst.
Lawrence is just too good.
i'm turning 22 this year and bought my house about 2 years ago give or take, when i was 19. it was actually quite easy i thought. good luck to you adam.

with the spontaneous nature of this podcast I presume with natural progression of the podcast episode 175 will compete with the Eric Andre show
The far cry series is always at it's best on the hardest difficulty.
Love that E&L Indie Corner (Korner2Korner)!
First Ai-chan, now combat juggling. Adam is the Russia of Hard Nettin'.
I thought there was a connection between Far Cry games. Wasn't there something in Primal about when the main character's blessed with the power to tame beasts, it passed down to the main characters in the earlier games? I can't remember if that was a random fan theory or if that was canonical to the Far Cry lore.
the games are connected in a sense. The side characters will sometimes mention things that could be about the guy from game 1 and 2
can we suggest Hard Netting categories? because I think Lawrence should take a look at Poppy
FarCry seems to always take place in an area where there are is ongoing conflict and you're always the resolution regardless of what decisions you make during the process. Always the saviour of the people.
I was wondering why Lawrence's shot had so much head room, Indie corner cleared that up lol
Well Lawrence I'm a millennial and i love the western type movies and i would love a Western Game.
Well Adam... Idk if it's a bonus mission, but in FC3 there is a mission in an old facility where you actually see the abstergo symbol.

Congrats on the house Adam I got my Real Estate License in Texas a year ago and I feel your pain on trying to negotiate with the seller to fix something after inspection I hope it works out man!
I wish Lawrence would lend his soothing voice to audiobook
Just sold my first house for a relocation. Stick with it. You'll get there.
Bruce is asking the real question
Why are we read this?
Where did it come from?
