Lucas drew on a very wide variety of sources for Star Wars. Dune, Akira Kurosawa, the Roman Empire right after the Roman Republic fell, and Nazi Germany are the obvious ones.
@BlunderMunchkin yes, I think we all know this. Lots of stuff lumped into there - which is why Star Wars is not a thing I would categorize as being a direct copy of anything, since it's such a hodgepodge of different sources. Essentially Lucas didn't rip off any one source any more than your average scifi writer does. Everyone creative is influenced by the stuff they grew up on
It's not that the shields run out of power, they only deflect fast moving attacks. If you move your weapon slow enough, you can push it through the shield (as Gurney said: "The slow blade penetrates the shield").
The "in-universe reason" for this quirk actually makes sense. If the Shield worked completely to block blows, it would ALSO prevent Air penetrating the shield at all, meaning that you could suffocate if the Shield is active too long, or you are engaged in any strenuous activity, which means you breathe harder and run out of air sooner.
The properties of the shield are also why you don’t see conventional guns that shoot high velocity projectiles. Only slow moving projectiles, like the burrowing “dart” that took down the Duke, or bladed hand weapons are effective against a shield.
Spice is necessary for interstellar travel in order to navigate. Computers or “thinking machines” have been strictly prohibited for thousands of years, because of a terrible war between humans and AI machines. So, in order to navigate through the galaxy, the Guild Navigators use spice to enable their brains to the work of a navigation computers.
A big divergence point between the canon Frank Herbert books and Brian Herbert’s stylized fan fiction. Frank Herbert didn’t envision a war between mankind and AI. Rather the Butlerian Jihad was a war between enslaved humans and the powerful men who controlled AI, who used it to overlord themselves upon society. Brian Herbert wrote about a more Skynet scenario which is cruder and less realistic than Frank Herbert’s imagining of the Thinking Machine era.
....So, instead of using computers to control space travel, they decided to put their trust in the hands of some fat slug aliens, who set the coordinates while whacked out on LSD.
@@Wezwolf Not aliens. They’re humans. The stage III guild navigators have gone through so much change they don’t look like humans anymore. Their brains have become the equivalent of Cray supercomputers.
@@batbrick3949 Oh - Maybe 'Monsters', would be more appropriate... Are they supposed to look like fat slugs? Or is that just David Lynch's interpretation?
@@Wezwolf Not really. In the books they are described as looking vaguely humanoid, but elongated with finned feet and hugely fanned membranous hands. They have elongated and repositioned limbs and organs. Their appearance in the Sci Fi Channel miniseries is pretty close to the book description.
23:39 The Emperor is jealous and afraid of House Atreides He secretly allied with their enemies the Harkonnens to destroy them. That is why he sent in his Sardaukar troops to also help in the ambush. In the book, the Sardaukar were dressed like Harkonnen troops so nobody would know the Emperor was helping.
Why have their own suits in the movie then? Also, Duncan said you know a Sardukar if you've crossed swords with one, so the disguise doesn't seem that effective
Every scene is important. I recommend watching this again in your own time with a dark room, by yourself, and pay attention to every word, sound, and visual. You seem to have missed key information. This is the first movie, which introduces all the background information the next movie builds on.
The book Dune preceeded Star Wars by 10 years, if there are similarities it is because Lucas might have read it. Lucas supposedly based Star Wars on Japanese Samurai films. Author Frank Herbert laid out a fully realized universe in his densely plotted story.
It's been common knowledge for nearly 50 years that Lucas was not only influenced by the works of Professor Joseph Campbell, but also Dune, Metropolis, Flash Gordon and even Star Trek.
I actually heard that Lucas was partially inspired by Dune! But yes, Dune... the first book, was published in 1965, which is 12 years before Star Wars came out
The Holtzman shield's can not be used in the desert of Aracis, their vibrations will drive the worms into a frenzy. The Holtzman shield technology vibrates the molecules close to the items being protected at a high frequency, only slow moving objects can pass through it which is why the slow blade can penetrate the shield, slow objects in general.
The first filmed version of DUNE was in 1984, Star studded cast, it before movie studios learned you could break up a dense book into multiple movies. The original book was published in the 1960s.
yes, the bene gesserit are trained to have such control over their bodies that they can do things like choose the sex of their offspring. I've seen a lot of reactors think the reverend mother was being unreasonable when she said "you were told to only bear daughters" so I'm glad you guys caught that bit haha
The Baron, floating fat guy, is not the same person as the Emperor. Seems you misunderstood that. The emperor is not present in the first movie, you'll se him in part 2.
People forget that the Sci-Fi channel did a three part Dune mini-series with William Hurt (RIP) as Duke Leto. It's a different pace than a movie and has more time to develop different parts of the themes.
After the mini serie Dűne (2000) they made an another one Children of Dune (2001) in also 3x1.5 hour episodes wich included the book Messiah of Dune. In my opinion those series had poor visuality but they followed the novel better - better than anything g so far.
There are 5 groups that hold power in the universe 1 the spacing guild (they use spice and control space travel even the emperor is technically under them as they can jut not allow him to travel in space through them) 2 the empire (emperor, dukes amd other nobles/houses) 3 the Bene Gesserit (though secretly even in power to the empire) 4 mentats (the guys with the line on the bottom lip they are mentally enhanced and then enhanced further with controled doses of spice to be living computers because of an incident long-ago no A.I. can be made or used) 5 Bene Tleilax (they are merchants and body manipulators they can make clones and specially designed assassins) paul has been trained as both a bene gesserit and a mentat in addition to having been trained by the 2 best single fighters in the universe spice elevates consciousness and with it you can mentally connect two points in space thats what the spaing guild does the Kwisatz Haderach(what paul is believed to be) can connect not just space but time hence pauls dreams he gets visions of possible futures mostly for the first movie and first half of the book his visions are mostly guiding him to fully open his 3rd eye to see the time fully not just space all the visions of him dying are guiding him to the death of paul so he can become the Kwisatz Haderach as it says in the vision before his fight with jamis "when you take a life you take your own" the reason it showed both channi and jamis killing him is she gave him the blade and jamis gave his life both killed paul so he could become the Kwisatz Haderach though technically he isnt yet but he had to be ready to kill which paul was not
Paul has multiple visions at once. what will really come true is determined by events and the decision he makes. In one vision he dies, in another he doesn't. The vision he is trying to avoid is the one that leads to a Holy War. But the more spice he injected the clearer his vision and his see the path will take him into a war in his name. Also, mostly all SF movies, such as Star Wars, were influenced by the book, Dune. Even the refer to spice.
George Lucas almost certainly read Dune, and took inspiration from it, when writing Star Wars... Arrakis, is probably inspiration for Tattooine... "Spice" is important in both universes (Han Solo was a spice smuggler), but the Star Wars movies, never tells us exactly what it is, or why it's important... The Bene Gesserit and their "weirding way" (their highly advanced martial arts), are probably inspiration for the Jedi... the Voice is probably inspiration, for the Jedi mind trick... Paul, is an inspiration for Anakin, and both stories have a "Chosen One"... There are other similarities, but..... spoilers... also, the "Voice" is talking in a way, that your nervous system, aka your bodys control center, does what u tell them to do, without them knowing, basically a memory loss, of what u told them to do, and what they did... that's how that 6 or 8 legged "pet" the Harkonnens had, "knew what she said", even tho "it didnt understand her"... there's a defence for this, but that means being deaf, which is why u see a Harkonnen soldier, being deaf, most likely done to him, and not born that way... PS: no high tech AI, coz the AI almost went Terminator on them, so they have human "AI's" for that... u see it in the start, when a guy is asked, what it cost to get to the planet, and his eyes, goes to the back of his head, becoming all white, and then the eyes comes back, and he answers...
Weirding Way could also be a reference to the unique martial art in star wars called Tares Kasi it was a fighting style designed to combat force wielder's
The Baron, the great big fat bad guy, is not the Emperor.. he's the Baron Harkonnen, he's the guy who controlled Arrakis and the spice up until the Emperor(Christopher Walken) decreed that Atreides will take control of Arrakis as part of a plan to trap and destroy House Atreides..
Frank Herbert started writing Dune as a serial in the late 50’s. The final book came out in 1965. So any similarities would be SW “borrowing” from the masterpiece Dune.
"Is he the sand worm" "She's the one" "She's helping him with his dreams..... she's healing him" "Is it using the voice" "They're gonna distract the worm" "It's creating quicksand" "You asked them to come" "These shields have a capacity, and once it's done they just fail" "it makes you say the truth, like a truth serum" "He ate his wife" "I think he didn't stab him, so he would kill him" It's like you were watching some other film! Violet looked bored as heck most of the way through.... like she was just waiting for it to end to get laid!
Hands down the best thing going for Dune is the stunning visuals from beginning to end. Director Denis Villeneuve compiled a beautiful collection of scenes that are truly a sight to see. One thing you’ll notice is how the cinematography seamlessly compliments so many elements in the film. Dune is so masterfully shot, that you could watch this movie on mute and still be entertained. Unlike the original film and the TV series, the plot was easy to follow. Despite the dense, sci-elements in the story, I appreciated the focused approach on only one group/family.
The new Dune movies actually make the old movie better lol. If I saw the 1984 version before the new ones, I don’t think I would have understood it to the extent I do now.
13:30 Actually the Fremen believe that the "One" will be the child of a Reverend Mother. At this point, Jessica isn't a Reverend Mother, but she is close enough that most of the religious Fremen won't quibble over it. 13:50 When Jessica told the Shadout Mapes the meaning of the crysknife, she freaked out. The reason is that the Shadout Mapes just got confirmation that the prophecy is coming true. Its kind of like a devout Christian realizing they're standing in front of Mary and Jesus is likely down the hall.
Spice isn’t a fuel, but rather the Spacing Guild Navigators need it to enter a Spice high, expanded consciousness in which they can navigate through foldspace. Spice is a drug.
What they don't mention in this version, but they do in the Books, and the 1984 film; the Stillsuits recycle everything. Their not just drinking their sweat. Body waste is collected in the Thigh Pads and the water is refined into drinking water. The Fremon riding Shai-Hulud is Stilgar. Advice; the '84 film is worth a watch, it is dated but there are differences. But not until you see Part 2.
Actually, I would recommend if you want to see a reasonable facsimile of the book watch the made-for-TV miniseries "Frank Herbert's Dune". It follows the book the closest although the production values are vastly inferior.
Would recommend looking up a directional microphone and how to configure it and maybe get some speakersssssss. Watching this with 1 earbud in is actually wild 😢
Think of the dreams like this. You're standing in a room, people are talking in the next room, you can hear them, but you can't make out what they are saying. The spice exposure is waking up something in Paul no other can truly be.
Maybe it’s because Trixy’s first language isn’t English, she missed a lot of concepts and inferences that were explained or hinted in the movie, she is so lost lol. Hope she gives it another go or two.
14:50 "This is now where the confusion sets in" The Harkonnen's live on a poluted planet called Giedi Prime. The name of the planet even appeared at the bottom of the screen. What you mistook for a space ship was Giedi Prime and the Bene Gesserit ships arriving in orbit. How did you mistake a planet for a space ship?! The Baron is not the Empeor (he doesn't appear in this film. The Baron even says "the Emperor is a jealous man" and his nephew asked the Baron "how could the Emperor take away everything"). No, the Baron isn't a sand worm lol he is floating using the implants on his back as he is too fat to walk. And you ask "what is a Sietch?" but literally minutes earlier, Jason Momoa tells us that the Fremen live in "communities called a Sietch" lol
This franchise will forever have a place in my heart. My best friend (Who I had known for 8 years and had a massive crush on) and her dad got me into the franchise less than a year before this movie came out. As soon as I saw this, I became hooked. I'm not halfway through the 4th book, and I paid $60 to see Part 2 on a special IMAX screening 4 days before it came out worldwide. I don't talk to her anymore since she broke off contact with me. But I will forever be grateful to her and her dad for getting me into this franchise.
In short you are put into the middle of Dune without much knowledge of the Dune universe. Denis Villeneuve is also not one for much dialogue instead using pictures and sound to tell a story. Most people are missing the context of Dune even after watching the second movie. This is a very complex story and no human is a "good" person. Even the one's you see as heroes are not "good". Dune is all about finding the right path for humanity to survive and the problems of following a charismatic leader.
the Emperor sent Atreides (good guys) to Dune in order to use Harkonnens (bad guys) to ambush and destroy them, because Duke Leto Atreides was becoming too powerful military-wise, whereas Baron Harkonnen was becoming too wealthy, so each of the two great houses put Emperor's rule in danger, he set things up for the two houses to fight one another over Dune to weaken both
dr Kynes didn't have a shield on because shields attract the worms as well. she wanted to hitch a ride on it by using a lure, but if she had the shield on, the worm would simply go directly for her and ate her. I know that's exactly what happened but she didn't account for the sardaukar soldiers attacking her beforehand
When a ship makes a jump in the universe, it doesn't know what it will find on the other side, and most of the transport ships that jumped ended up lost when they reached the other side. When they discovered the spice, one of its effects is that in some individuals, who are selected and trained by the space guild, the spice has the effect of predicting a near future, and with this these individuals selected to be navigators on commercial ships, predict whether or not a ship will break down after the jump, managing to avoid this future, and with this, always making a safe journey. Paul even shows himself to be one of these people with this sensitivity to spice, but on a much larger scale.
Probably it's been said before but yes Dune and Star Wars seem very close since Dune was the main inspiration for George Lucas. The first movie that came out was directed by David Lynch but most of the work done was by Alejandro Jodorovski who was supposed to make the movie, with Salvador Dali as the emperor (who you'll see in the second part played by Christopher Walken). Oh and it's been confirmed by Denis Villeneuve himself that a third movie is on track... Almost since he's waiting for the final script to be done :)
After Duncan fell in battle, the Sardaukar were very impressed by his skill and determination that they thought simply burning the body would be quite a waste. So, they took his body and delivered it to the Bene Tleilax, a human species known for their mastery in genetic engineering and cloning...
you should check out the original books. they are split up into 3 or 4 paperbacks. the original printing may be one hard cover. Your confusion is because they have omitted many of the fine details of they story. it really is a dynamic story when you know everything. This was the third or fourth go around for remaking the movie. the earlier ones did a fair job of actually telling the story but this one had the better special effects
11:00 Jessica is terrified for Paul because she knows what he is experiencing, and knows that he might die. She experienced the same thing when she was in school.
The Fat guy is not the emperor he is the Baron Vladimir Harkkonen (Head of the house Harkkonen), the house Harkkonen and the house Atredies are mortal enemies but both are Royal houses that belong to the Imperium. The emperor (Head of the House Corrino and leader of the Imperium and all the Royal Houses) feared that Duke Leto and the House Atredies were becoming too popular within the rest of the Royal Houses and would become powerful enough to overtake him so he staged everything, taking control of Arakkis away from House Harkkonen and giving it to House Atredies, he then without anyone else in the Imperium knowning helped The Baron Harkkonen attack and exterminate House Atterdies (he not only helped him with the attack but lent him the legions of Sardukkar who are the Emperor's Army and believed to be the best warriors in the galaxy), this to get rid of the House Atredies and stay in control of the Empire, but he did not forshadow that Paul would survive (nor did he know that Paul had the potential to become the Quizat Haderak "chosen one" bread by the Bene Geserit Order over thousands of years). Lady Jessica was told to bear women (yes they are able to choose the sex of the baby) by the Bene Geserit so her daughter would marry one of the Harkkonen heirs in order to keep theri plan of breeding the Quizat Haderak (Chosen one, a being that would be able to bend time and space), but she disobeyed the Order and had a boy because she loved Leto and he wanted a Son, enven then Paul had the potential to become the Quizat Haderak thus having premonition dreams and being able to use the voice (a Bene Geserit power), with the spice in his sistem his powers were amplified, and he realized his "dreams" were not just deams but he could see into the future (or potential futures, thus he could see the things to come and with his actions change that future, so his dreams are not the future per se but glimpses into what could happen not only in his future but also alternate futures, and with that knowledge he can navigate the present and change the outcome of things to come like when he dreamt of his death, he could change that alternate future).
You can think of this as a reboot, but it's actually a seres of novels, by Frank Herbert in the 1970's (I think). He created this whole universe. He wrote the first 5 or 6 in the series before he passed away. Since then, his son Brian has been working with another cool sci-fi author Kevin J Anderson, to produce a lot more novels within the Dune universe. To say it's an epic saga, is to understate the term "epic". The movie from the 1980's is decent. It's well worth reacting to. There's also a TV miniseries sequel called Children Of Dune, which is the 2nd novel (I think), from 2000. It's also quite decent. This movie feels VERY authentic to the novels. You can tell the director is a huge fan of the Dune franchise, and wants to really do the source material justice. He's committed to (I think) the 4th movie, before handing it over to someone else.
Maybe a crunchy food isn't best for reaction content. Sure if you're just relaxing and watching a movie at home but as content annoying. (especially for headphone users)
I love how your imagination just takes off! He was "The One-ing" love that. :) The Emperor asked the Atreides to take over Dune, to give the Harkonnens the chance to ambush and kill them all. He even helped them by sending Imperial troops to help wipe them out. No a Truthsayer knows when you are telling a lie. But the Voice, as you can see, makes people obey you no matter what. The Bene Gesseritt are so powerful and strange they are barely human in some ways. Duncan (Jason Mamoa's character) is widely seen as one of the best single fighters in the entire galaxy. He was up against the cream of the Imperial troops, and see how many he took with him before falling! There is a little detail not here but in the novel. Paul has never killed anyone before. He weeps at this man's death--and the Fremen are AWESTRUCK. They do not cry, because it wastes water. They say Paul is "giving water to the dead" which is the highest possible honor one Fremen could give another when they die. Paul though FEARS his vision, of a galaxy spanning war in his name, one that will depopulate worlds, slaughter billions, wreck whole civilizations and crush every other religion save worship of Him personally. He doesn't want that. But he also wants to bring down the Harkonnens, avenge his father, and change Dune for its people. But can he have one and not the other?
You know... there are some things impossible to portrait in this movie, like the powers of the Bene Geserit, that are rooted in real life deep mind yoga and the powers commented by Patanjali in his Yoga sutras. The voice is real life Neurolinguistic programming, a tool used in psychology and marketing. The spice allow the Navigators to trace a safe path for the interstellar ships, by seeing the future, literally. This allows them to manipulate politics also. Villeneuve did a great job making a movie that people can watch and enjoy but many things we nerds know are imposible to describe. Like the sign language. In the books the Bene Geserit can use a face muscle little tick as part of the sign language so the untrained eye can't see you are speaking a second line of dialog at the same time your mouth is saying something totally different. Please read the books, you'll like them.
You should honestly watch the 2nd part in theaters. Do yourself a favor and watch it in theaters. Really once of a lifetime experience Denis the director said part one is like an appetizer, part two is the main course. For me part two was a four course meal with dessert and a string quartet by candlelight. They overdelivered so hard
Hey Blue & V.! Does your brain hurt after watching this? I saw u were trying to keep everything straight about who is who, but having a bit of trouble. The story of Dune takes place thousands of years in the future. Spice (melange) has a part in every aspect of this world. It enhances people's minds. That is why some people seem to have powers/abilities. The Bene Gesserits can control their physical biology to the point of being superhuman. Jessica, Paul's mom, was a part of their order & 1 of their most gifted, so that is how she can decide what sex her child will be, she has superhuman strength & speed. She was also taught the "wierding way" which makes her a skilled fighter. The doctor was what they call Bene Tleilax they r the doctors/scientist that deal w/biological & genetically engineered products. All they have to do is put their hands on u to "see" what's physically wrong w/u. Paul's visions @ times can be unreliable, but if there is something constant in those visions then it will come to pass. An example is when he says "Someone will hand me a cryssknife, but I don't know who or when..." His exposure to spice is enhancing his visions & whatever abilities he has. Not to sound crazy, but I have had a few prophetic dreams/dreams of the future. Most of them came to pass. Ok, let's get back to DUNE & your reactions. The book came out in 1965 so George Lucas definitely got some of his ideas from it for STAR WARS. I saw the 1984 version of DUNE in the movie theater, I was around 12yrs old. I really liked it, but that was before I read the book & found out how much they left out, then I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I still occasionally watch it. Just to let u know, try snacking on something less noisy. It was hella.distracting. Other than that 1 complaint, it was a very good reaction.😊👍
The Emperor, who has not been seen (yet) feared the Atreides because they were making allies among the great houses in the Galaxy. This treatened (in his mind) the security of his throne and of his Dynasty - remember he had only daughters, no sons (by meddling from the Sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit) which meant that whoever married any of his daughters would have a claim to the throne. The Harkonnens, long time enemies of the Atreides, were immensly rich, richer than the Imperial house and the Emperor chose the use them as his agents to destroy the Atreides. He took the Harkonnens license to produce spice and "gifted" that to the Atreides - ("When is a gift not a Gift? as the Barton said.) Secretly he loaned the Harkonnens 3 Batallion of his Saudarkar warriouirs, thought o tbe invincible, to ensure the Baron destroyed House Atreides and breaking their alliances in the great Houses. By the end of the movie he has, obstensibly, succeeded. Bit of a Spoiler: But Paul and his Mother, Jessica, survived, as did Paul's Weapons Master, Gurney Halleck who has even more reason to hate Harkonnens. Part 2 is the opening round of the consequences of this oversight....
Paul's dreams are of the future, but the future isn't set, and he's untrained in the ways of seeing it so he only sees fragments of different futures relative to the path he is taking
Please go watch Dune: Part Two in theater. Don't wait for the streaming version just to do a reaction. Not worth wasting an extraordinary IMAX or theater experience! Because in IMAX, you feel it! You are part of it! 😄
If you are confused by the story, Maybe you should read the book ; It would clarify a lot of things. They should've done a miniseries of at least 6 to 8 episodes like game of thrones. I loved the visuals on the film, but there are some minor things I did not like about the film. 🤘
so...other Dune stuff...there are 6 original books written by Frank Herbert between 1965 and 1985. Then there are another 20 or so books (written between 1999 and now) co-written by Brian Herbert (Frank's son) and Kevin J. Anderson, which include 3 prequels, 3 "Legends of Dune", 2 "sequels", 3 "Heroes of Dune", 3 "Great Schools of Dune", and 3 "The Caladan Trilogy". Frank Herbert also wrote 1 short story in 1985 and Brian and Kevin wrote 13 short stories from 2001 to now! There is also a few different comic book series. As for video...there is obviously this movie and part 2. As for previous video, there's the 1984 movie. Hmmm... the 1984 movie is the entire first book. This movie here you just reacted to is about half of the first book, and we assume part 2 will be the rest of the first book. Then there was a 3 part mini-series on TV back back in the early 2000's, this mini-series actually covered the first 3 books. At some point, I recommend you watch both the 1984 movie and the mini-series, even if you don't do a reaction to them. There is also another new Dune TV series due to come out this year. I myself really don't know anything about it, whether it's going to be a full series or mini-series or whatever.
So few things Star Wars is based off Dune. That's why the similarities Dune is a lot about control of your mind and body, you must control yourself and achieve mind clearance, fear is the mind killer, emotion blurs your vision, everyone is plotting, everyone is planning, and everyone is going ahead of the others, there's a quote from the books that's literalyl everyone has plans within plans. Paul has powers cause he has a greater mind being the son of a Bene Gesserit. The Bene Geseritt are an only woman cult who have developed great minds and phsycical control, so much that they can change their physical form, dna and genes and they can use their voice on others, if they get pregnant they can only have girls unless they are told otherwise by the great mother, cause the male from a Bene Gesserit is a Messiah from a prophecy, Jesica Went against that rule and manipulated herself to bear a male, Paul, who is supposudely the Kwisacth Haderach, but it's very up to interpretation, cause the Ben Gesserit spread the word of a messiah depending on the wolrd and culture, the Bene Geserit great mother can only see the pastof her female ancestries, but the messiah can see the past and future of all things. Paul has a greater mind, cause he's trained by the mentant Thuffir, the bene geserit Jessica, Duncan Idaho and Genrly and this mind is only enhanced by the spice, but as you see it's not always correct, Paul doesn't see one future, he sees different future, for example he saw Duncan living with him and the fremen but Paul also saw Duncan dying, Chani welcoming him and kising him, but another one where Chani stabs him and finally and the most important one, Jamis as a friend, but also as a warrior who get killed by Paul, and all of them are technically correct. Specially Jamis, cause he indeed thaught him to mature by killing for the first time, and thaught him the way of the desert. The spice is used to travel and to do a lot of stuff in the dune universe, hence the importance., but the worms do not have the voice, the produce it, cause arrakis is a simbionical environment, worms produce the spice but the spice is also important for the worms to live. And the shield stops very fast things, that's why they don't use guns or bullets, but sloweer things can pass through it. And girls please, if you have the chance, watch the second one in teathers!!
You picked up part of the story. Paul is the result of thousands of years of selective breeding to produce a man who could see within to all generations of ancestors and see into the future. Paul's visions have an inherent uncertainty: each decision changes the future: every blink, every stray flash of light, every misplaced sand grain changes the face of the future. Paul sees a multitude of possible futures, nearly all of which end with him lying dead from a gaping knife wound. This uncertainty limits his prescience and impose a human constraint on his character. Dune Part 2 will reveal more of the scheme of the Bene Gesserit and the Paul's future. You must see Dune 2 in an IMAX cinema.
Pt 2 screwed up critical canon so bad the end is a mess, but man Giedi Prime in the daylight is amazing! Spice is used by the Navigators to open their consciousnesses to see everything's locations so plotting a safe space course can happen for the Holtzman Drives to fold space, the Drives & sublight drives run on some type of fuel like every other vehicle uses.
The older movie was not a good adaptation. The Sci-Fi channel made a better miin-series adaptation of Dune but they followed it up with Children Of Dune which never got any other kind of adaptation yet. Villeneuve, however, did not express much interest in moving beyond any Dune3 that _might_ happen.
Older version of Dune is not really accurate to the book. This movie is VERY close to the book. So you understand but not to spoil anything that year 10191 is after the butlerian jihad, a war of humans against AI. Hu.ans won, and any tbinking machine is forbiden by the Orange Catholic Bible, a book that all religions must follow. So mo computers or androids: EVERYTHING has to be done by human brainpower , so humans evolved to develop all sort of weird habilities. Also no aliens were ever discovered... just humans trying to find their say in the universe.
More accurately, Star Wars is based off of Dune
mmm...somewhat. Star Wars is more influenced by samurai and western movies than it is Dune.
@@mikefish1124 True, it was more specifically A New Hope and Tatooine, as well as the force in part.
@@JakeSignalYT yeah that's fair. There are other IPs that are more direct in their influence - like the Warhammer 40000 universe, etc
Lucas drew on a very wide variety of sources for Star Wars. Dune, Akira Kurosawa, the Roman Empire right after the Roman Republic fell, and Nazi Germany are the obvious ones.

Brian Herbert wrote about a more Skynet scenario which is cruder and less realistic than Frank Herbert’s imagining of the Thinking Machine era.
....So, instead of using computers to control space travel,
they decided to put their trust in the hands of some fat slug aliens, who set the coordinates while whacked out on LSD.

23:39 The Emperor is jealous and afraid of House Atreides
He secretly allied with their enemies the Harkonnens to destroy them.
Hi is it possible that the bene geseric saw the future that house atreides will have a messiah that might replace the emperor?
Every scene is important. I recommend watching this again in your own time with a dark room, by yourself, and pay attention to every word, sound, and visual. You seem to have missed key information. This is the first movie, which introduces all the background information the next movie builds on.
Lol
Duncan explained what a sietch was before Stilgar showed up. It’s a Fremen community of about 10,000 people.
The book Dune preceeded Star Wars by 10 years, if there are similarities it is because Lucas might have read it. Lucas supposedly based Star Wars on Japanese Samurai films. Author Frank Herbert laid out a fully realized universe in his densely plotted story.
I'm pretty sure Lucas used the concept of the Bene Gesserit Voice for the Jedi Mind Trick.
It's been common knowledge for nearly 50 years that Lucas was not only influenced by the works of Professor Joseph Campbell, but also Dune, Metropolis, Flash Gordon and even Star Trek.
Preceded. Proceeded means the opposite of what you meant.

I think all attempts are valid takes at the novel. Some vibe with others and some do not :)
If watching on the small screen was a necessity for you, listening to the audio with only one earpiece is a crime :/ So sad.
I mean Dune ain’t all that. It’s good but not like that.

Or more succinctly, the visions that we witness Paul having are not of THE future, just A future. He can see a lot of them.
Basically, he sees possible futures because the future is not set in stone.
Are we paying attention girls?
14:53 the Harkonnens live on Giedi Prime a planet that is an ecological nightmare.
They mainly stay indoors
The do have outdoor affairs, just everything is monochrome & pollution tainted nightmare.
I guess the downside of reacting to newer movies is not experiencing certain films in theaters where it feels more impactful.
Frank Herbert started writing Dune as a serial in the late 50’s. The final book came out in 1965. So any similarities would be SW “borrowing” from the masterpiece Dune.
"Is he the sand worm"
"She's the one"
"She's helping him with his dreams..... she's healing him"
"Is it using the voice"
"They're gonna distract the worm"
"It's creating quicksand"
"You asked them to come"
"These shields have a capacity, and once it's done they just fail"
"it makes you say the truth, like a truth serum"
"He ate his wife"
"I think he didn't stab him, so he would kill him"
It's like you were watching some other film!
Paul's dreams are unreliable, they show possible futures, and guide his actions.
The new Dune movies actually make the old movie better lol. If I saw the 1984 version before the new ones, I don’t think I would have understood it to the extent I do now.
I enjoy both personally as it shows different interpretations :)
The firemen at the end riding is not stilgar. But we do see stilgar ride a worm in part 2
Would recommend looking up a directional microphone and how to configure it and maybe get some speakersssssss. Watching this with 1 earbud in is actually wild 😢
Dune is like Star Wars for adults.
Epic is probably the best word to describe Dune.
Think of the dreams like this. You're standing in a room, people are talking in the next room, you can hear them, but you can't make out what they are saying. The spice exposure is waking up something in Paul no other can truly be.
Dune has a lot happening very quickly with little time to stop and process. It may take more than a single viewing to catch it all.
Maybe it’s because Trixy’s first language isn’t English, she missed a lot of concepts and inferences that were explained or hinted in the movie, she is so lost lol. Hope she gives it another go or two.
14:50 "This is now where the confusion sets in"
The Harkonnen's live on a poluted planet called Giedi Prime.
16:21 it's sad that every question of yours has been already answered in the movie. Maybe you should watch it
Not watching Dune Part 2 in the Cinema is a crime
It's so funny how everything you ask is literally answered, but everything in the story goes over y'all heads. Crazy.
He who controls The Spice, controls the universe! :)
The Bene Gesserit CAN choose the sex of their offspring.😊 The Hunter Seeker reacts to movement, so Paul remains perfectly still.
After Duncan fell in battle, the Sardaukar were very impressed by his skill and determination that they thought simply burning the body would be quite a waste. So, they took his body and delivered it to the Bene Tleilax, a human species known for their mastery in genetic engineering and cloning...
De fato eles venderam o corpo de Duncan e ganharam uns trocados pro café......😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
you should check out the original books. they are split up into 3 or 4 paperbacks. the original printing may be one hard cover. Your confusion is because they have omitted many of the fine details of they story. it really is a dynamic story when you know everything. This was the third or fourth go around for remaking the movie. the earlier ones did a fair job of actually telling the story but this one had the better special effects
“He’s resurrected.”
“No one is immortal. Hmm sad.”
It literally said home world of house harkkonen lol
“Bless the Maker and His water.
Bless the coming and going of Him.
May His passage cleanse the world.
May He keep the world for His people. ”
The first book was written in 1965.😊
The first movie was in 1984. But there was also a Mini-Series in 2000 which I liked. It fleshed out the world .
Maybe a crunchy food isn't best for reaction content. Sure if you're just relaxing and watching a movie at home but as content annoying. (especially for headphone users)
I love how your imagination just takes off!
He was "The One-ing" love that. :)
The Emperor asked the Atreides to take over Dune, to give the Harkonnens the chance to ambush and kill them all.
The worm is the spice, the spice is the worm.
You know... there are some things impossible to portrait in this movie, like the powers of the Bene Geserit, that are rooted in real life deep mind yoga and the powers commented by Patanjali in his Yoga sutras.
Really once of a lifetime experience
Denis the director said part one is like an appetizer, part two is the main course.
Pauls visions aren't always accurate as other possible futures exist, and they often aren't literal, at least right now.
it's crazy to me that instead of saying hey it's that guy from WWE now it's that guy from Guardians of the Galaxy💀
What's WWE?
Jamis fucked around and found out. The Amtal Rule, testing ‘till destruction.
Read the book in high school in the 90s. Borrowed from a classmate. Ended reading the other books even the prequels co-written by Brian Herbert
Dune was a huge inspiration for George Lucas when he made Star Wars 😊
If you are confused by the story, Maybe you should read the book ; It would clarify a lot of things. They should've done a miniseries of at least 6 to 8 episodes like game of thrones. I loved the visuals on the film, but there are some minor things I did not like about the film. 🤘
This movie is awesome, but the book is really well worth a read. And the book sequels as well. Children and Emperor are especially great.
Not a good reaction video. You removed a lot of interesting parts and kept a lot of dead parts.
The series of books are a must. if you can read them first before watching any movie do it ...
To understand this version, I think one should read the book, then see the 1985 version and probably see the tv version. Then this one.
so...other Dune stuff...there are 6 original books written by Frank Herbert between 1965 and 1985.
The new HBO is about The Bene Gesserit and is supposed to be set thousands of year's before the two movies.😊
@@jonathanpowell7256 sounds cool...let's hope they don't mess it up!

Dune is a lot about control of your mind and body, you must control yourself and achieve mind clearance, fear is the mind killer, emotion blurs your vision, everyone is plotting, everyone is planning, and everyone is going ahead of the others, there's a quote from the books that's literalyl everyone has plans within plans.
26:26 No a truthsayer can tell when you are lying
Pt 2 screwed up critical canon so bad the end is a mess, but man Giedi Prime in the daylight is amazing! Spice is used by the Navigators to open their consciousnesses to see everything's locations so plotting a safe space course can happen for the Holtzman Drives to fold space, the Drives & sublight drives run on some type of fuel like every other vehicle uses.
7:32 "This is Anakin in the making" U might be on to something 👀
This movie has a lot to take in but it is so epic. The books are amazing
Dune (the book) came before Star Wars and inspired the latter, somewhat.
The soundtrack is wow
You got nothing right abouth this so hularius😂
The older movie was not a good adaptation.
The Sci-Fi channel made a better miin-series adaptation of Dune but they followed it up with Children Of Dune which never got any other kind of adaptation yet. Villeneuve, however, did not express much interest in moving beyond any Dune3 that _might_ happen.
You should also see the tv miniseries: Dune and Children of Dune.
The part 2 is even better.
Time for Dune Part 2
Have V ever seen V for the vendetta?
It'll be fun to see you watch the 1984 film :)
It's rather different and wild as it has Toto providing the music !
