This is the cleanest, most straightforward, and helpful tutorial on the Stryfe I've seen. Excellent job!
Now where did I leave my soldering iron.

soldering multiple leads to a single terminal is a pain in the ars
A how-to video .....with all the work done ON SCREEN!?!?! A refreshing change of pace. Nicely done. Crisp, thought out and succinct.
Yes....this tutorial will do nicely, much appreciated Captain! I'm sure the commissioner shall enjoy their Stryfe upon reviving it.
Thanks for posting this. Literally just bought a Stryfe at Walmart right before this went up with the intent of doing this exact sort of thing.
When I had the concept of soldering flux, at least with copper pipe plumbing, flux is a cleaning compound that cleans off everything and anything that would weaken your solder joint.
Could you kindly please do this for a rapidstrike
That's dracs nyx cage
Yes
I heard my name?
@@Nyx-ly2fw bro this can’t be real😂💀
Captain Xavier Great work, Chaylo, truly great work. This is perhaps the clearest, most honest Nerf mod video I've ever seen. No unnecessary jump-cuts or fast-forwards (and no horrid electronic music overlays!) just real-time video and explanations in plain speech. What I would have given to see this video four or five years ago...!!!
Well played, sir. Well played, indeed. :)
Unrelated note: Have you, perchance, come across the files to print a cosmetic piece for the left side of a Stryfe that would render the blaster symmetrical? I've been looking but haven't found one yet. I'm mildly OCD about symmetry, I'd rather like a Stryfe that has the same profile on both sides.
I have not found any such files.
You could probably epoxy an extended piece for 180 motors and an extended battery door to the left side to make it symmetrical
Thanks for this very helpful video. I used it to do my first stryfe rewire. This is the best video I found on the subject.
I've got what is called a MIST. It's a lump of 3d printed plastic specially designed to go over the motor leads as a sort of shield to protect them against any press technique meant for setting the flywheels, but prone to damaging those leads. I'd including a link, but I'm not at my PC right now.
Who else knows everything that he talks about here, but watched it anyway, because it’s captain Xavier?
Nice. I'm considering doing my own stryfe build soonish, and this is spurring me on. (We still need to talk Lego for modded Stampede at some point.)
Messed up my Rapid Red last night...mistake made in cutting the wrong wire...arrgghhhhh...this will help big time
Fantastic. This will help me a lot in the future. Thanks a bunch mate.
11:18 And at last I find a good answer that actually helps me figure out what wire is best to start with. This and that hyperfire wiring diagram, I am slowly understanding the mystical devices known as electric blasters. Now if I find something that helps me get an understanding of flywheels and the cages better than the *spinny wheels grab dart and make it nyoom* i have now, I'll really be cooking with electricity.
That is the hardest part. Just using the options available from OutofDarts.com there are 10,290 different wheel/motor/cage combinations...so figuring out which one is right for your build...can take some work...
@@CaptainXavier I am definitely feeling that, I'm targeting a 3s lipo because my inner caveman is saying *big blaster, big battery* so hearing that the 16 gauge wire is pretty over the maxes for most nerf applications was really useful, and now that I have a battery and wire, I'm working slowly around the various nerf online vendors to find a set that I think would work. And that doesn't factor in finding switches... in a week I'll either be playing with a doorstop or I'll have a plan, I'm hoping for the latter. Thanks for all the info as usual Captain
I already modded my stryfe, why am I here? Oh yeah, it's an awesome video
I am a big fan
I want a dremel that turns the whirring sound into generic pwn this wave of zombies while the npc fixes the nerf blaster music!
Nyx cages are awesome
Am I the only one that noticed the bottom motor in the flywheel cage move at 0:15???
are there ghosts in your house?
IT MOVED!!
Magnets dude. More powerful motors with neodymium magnets tend to self align if the cage allows it (the distance is small enough and the holes are round for brushless). He slammed the table just before that, moving them a bit and the motor adjusted itself to magnetic field.
Alternatively - magic.
I saw it
The cage is dracs own one
Thank you very informative
Thanks X this helps a lot!
what Dremel are you using?
It looks like Foredom, excellent thing to have
THANK YOU THIS IS THE EXACT VIDEO I NEEDED
this was sooooooo helpful thank a bunch
I'm in both the RC hobby and the Nerf modding hobby, so I have a ton of very high capacity LiPos lying around for whatever build I want :) Maybe I'll build an RC nerf tank thing lol
Sounds very epic!
Why Nerf shouldn’t ever stop making this!!!!
this is the only video I've watched that they used a dremel on anything
I use my dremel all the time...I just never show it because it is so loud.
what wire do you use and where did you get the rev switch from
All parts can be gotten from OutofDarts.com
What kind of solder would you prefer
I imagine any sort of lead free solder should be fine
Hey Capt, I have a couple of questions. Did you stop using flux after motors, or did you use it off camera? Also why not solder xd leads to the existing battery leads in the battery area?
I stopped. I remember the solder has flux built it. And because the way I did it is stronger and more flexible.
Cut it. Strip it. Tin it. Solder it!

I am going to mod my own stryfe soon, but videos are very confusing. I know it's a big request, but do you think that you could do a 1 on 1 whenever I decide to do mine? That would mean so much. If you can't that's fine, or if you don't want to, that's understandable. Thank you for the mod guide!
If you live in the pacific Northwest you are welcome to come to the Makerspace and I can help you. But a video 1x1? No, that would be frustrating and almost certainly unhelpful.
Oh, okay. I live in the southeast USA. My dad and I want to mod a stryfe, so I guess we'll follow along as best as we can. Thank you for the review!
Damn, mine broke while I wasnt even using it. At least ow after about one 1.5 year I had finnaly learned how to solder because of that orange plastic piece of crap.
Question, finally making the jump to lipo. I don't have the battery gauge just the alarm that hooks to the balance port. Where would I put that?
Wherever it will fit.
Do you have to solder the wires? If not what safe and reliable ways could be done to connect the wires? What’s a good 2s lipo for this stryfe mod? Do you need a flywheel cage when upgrading flywheel, motor, switch, and wires?
Yes, solder is required. Any 2s sold by OutofDarts.com. And no, upgrade only what you want.
Captain Xavier what’s a good switch for stryfe 2s lipo mods? What’s a cheap and reliable 2s lipo charger and volt alarm. What important thing should I know about 2s lipo? Thanks! I’m new to modding
I have a whole videos series for new modders. Monday Mod tips. Go watch them all. As for parts. Anything sold by OutifDarts is going to be the best.
Captain Xavier just watched some of your Monday mid tips; really helpful. 1 last question, what does a flywheel cage do? Should I just keep the factory cage on a stryfe if I use containment crew flywheels, fang revamp 2s motors, and 2s LiPO
do you need to replace the motors when making a super stryfe?
are you using different intros for each vid???
Yes
Is there a "place" to discuss concerns and questions regarding nerf modding? I've been inspired to complete a couple stryfes, and wanna learn a bit more about it. Thanks
Facebook. There are tons of Nerf Mod groups.
@@CaptainXavier ugh not on FB unfortunately guess I gotta "jump" on
If I was using 3s motors with 3 imrs and a dummy would 14 gauge wire be good?
14 is considerably more than enough. 18 is typically enough.
Also, I would not recommend trying to run 3 motors on IMRs. They will draw too much current.
@@CaptainXavier ok thanks so much but because this is my fist stryfe or flywheel mod should I just bypass the thermoster and install 3 IMR's or is that a bad idea?
How would you go about wiring the battery indicator to the jam door and where would you recommend placing it?
Watch my video on volt meters, the wiring is the same.
BAT NEG -> METER NEG
BAT POS -> SWITCH NO
SWITCH COM -> METER POS
and I recommend FoamBlasts jam door volt meter mount.
How effective do you think giant rc motors would be?
Depends on the torque and rpms.
Did you end up covering the terminals in the battery try to help prevent possible shorting?
Nope
Hope the owner does. Kind of bad if a wire catches those terminals just right jamming a lipo in there.
Would a full auto worker kit fit with all that thick wiring?
Yes
Hi, I'd like to ask one thing, as I'm new to soldering electronic stuff (yet I know how to solder and I'm quite good at mechanic) so, my question is, what kind of wire specifically I should buy to get it all done? Like I go to the electronic store and say I need this and this wire. I live in Europe if that matter for some numbers. I want to make battery mod (maybe with this battery indicator, it looks pretty dope) cage, flywheels and engines. Thank you!
16-18g silicone insulated wire is what I would recommend.
@@CaptainXavier Thank you!
Do a rocket revolver
How applicable is this guide to the Captain Cassian blaster? Similar process or are there a lot of major differences?
Also, how well do Stryfe cages fit in the Star Wars shell? Are there custom flywheel cages available for that blaster or can I just get a Stryfe cage and fit it into the Captain Cassian shell?
(New to the whole flywheel thing)
They use completely different cages but cages are available for the Cassian blaster. The wiring is exactly the same for the flywheels but you will need to do extra work if you want the lights and sound to still work.
@@CaptainXavier Thanks for the information. Do you think it's a good idea to practice the basics on a Stryfe before attempting a slightly more complicated blaster such as the Star Wars one?
Practice is always a good idea. Though like I said, the Flywheel part is identical. The lights and sound is a completely different issue. You either need to create a whole separate circuit (easier but will require a second battery tray) or reduce the voltage on the light and sound circuit. Either with resistors or a converter.
@@CaptainXavier I think I found a guide online that should help me with the process.
I'm a member of your Crew Auxiliary Facebook group, so any more questions can probably be answered by the folks over there. But thanks for answering some of my primary concerns here. :)
Oh god, 2 of 3 ads!
just curious if you used bolt (which I know is your preferred method) or glue for the voltmeter
please and thank you in advance, also keep up your awesomeness with Nerf! So sad won't be able to meet you in person this glorious October.
Glue
what gauge wire
Depends on the Motors/Battery you use but 16g is more than enough for almost any Nerf blaster build.
How would one cap their FPS at 120 for HVZ?
There are various wheel/motor/cage/battery combinations that result in 120 or below.
Thank you!
@@CaptainXavier Do you have any suggestions?
@@hello57976 not off the too of my head no. There are charts out there somewhere that cover dozens of combos but I couldn't tell you where.
Hey cap which spring do u think is stronger? K26 or longshot 18kg spring
Depends on the length of the k26.
Are you still doing commissions?
no
Would it make a difference in using 18 and 16 gauge
No
In the same circuit? @@CaptainXavier
yes
Hey Cap! I was planning on rewiring a Modulos Stryfe, and the Out of Darts mod book says it needs a XT-60 connector but the 2s LiPo is already hooked up to one so do I need to purchase a seperate one? Plz HELP!!
Yes. You need one in the blaster to plug the battery in to...
@@CaptainXavier Thanks!
Where did you buy your bech voice?
My what? Bench Vice? GearBest
You should have flipped the vid upside down so it's more like ur pov
Flip your phone over. ;)
If someone would answer my question, that would be great but does he do this for free?
Does he do what for free?
@@CaptainXavier Lol. Modding Nerf blaster.
If you are asking if I do mods for other people for free, no. Parts, blasters, materials, and time all cost money.
@@CaptainXavier Thanks for the clarification. And by the way, you should do something with Lord Draconicale.
Do something with him? Like what? Light him on fire?
Is there a way I can dm you
Nope. Can't be done. Simply not possible. You certainly couldn't use any of the contact info that is in the description of literally all my videos or on my channels "about" page. It certainly isn't there so people can contact me... ;P
Aren't fang revamps 2s?
Yes...which is why I used a 2s Lipo. Did I say 3s by mistake?
@@CaptainXavier yes I think you said most 3s lipos can't fit in the tray
Why is everyone using a $95 cage and flywheel?? Are they really that good? Will artifact flywheel cages work well?
Everyone? I use OFP cages and $14 wheels...
Captain Xavier oh 👌. On drac’s mod guide and yours the nyx cage was being used.
Captain Xavier are ofp cages durable? Would a metal cage work better?
They work just fine.
How does the cage preform
Don't know yet, weather prevented real testing. Firing video soon..
From a bunch of secondhand accounts and Drac himself, the NYX is designed with HvZ in mind. So it gets ~115-130 FPS on average with the 2S setup.
Obviously depending on the motors and darts and lipo.
Hey, is it okay if I use meishel 2.0 with a battery imr 14500?
Ok? I mean sure. It won't work as well but the motor will spin...for a while.
@@CaptainXavier is there a battery recommendation right?
@@faizizmail4049 I would recommend you swap out the brush pack on stock motors for a carbon one, and use 2 - 3 IMRs with a dummy battery on the stock motors. The Meishel 2.0s are to be used with a 2s LiPo.
Can I get the buy links for these
These what?

Did my first rewire today, and used this video to confirm that I was doing it right!
I haven't and probably will never open a Stryfe, or any electronic blaster, because of my unbridled fear of breaking the thing past the point of repair.
don’t be scared I’m 10 and I rewired a stryfe it’s easy
Erica Germain I know it’s easy and I’ve done it multiple times but, it’s really annoying when you screw something up
I have you to thank for my foam tinkering addiction .I built a stryfe but used a worker cage ..a you taught me how to solder (I used a hazzardous fright soldering iron)so I took my life in my own hands with that one .
Great video, thank you for taking the time to do it.
Hey Captain, would you be able to mod my stryfe? I have everything already I just need it wired up.
The whole point of this video was to teach you to do it yourself.
Good background noise for a rayvenfire rewire
This video was really helpful.
Do you have to have black and red wires because I have just red
No...but be very very careful you don't create a short circuit. The different colors makes it easy to tell which is your positive circuit and which is your negative.
I thought that just by handling your work piece, you've contaminated it, and the flux is the cleaning agent to counteract that contamination.
Do u have to use it tho? I’ve only seen it in this vid
@ZapFume Often times, yes, as the connection might not be as strong, either mechanically or electrically. Like if somehow, you managed to shove the wrong charge cord into the bottom of your cell phone, but still got it to charge and didn't destroy the port.
Pogr I guess IMA stick to my alpha trooper
@@zapfume1266 Well, springers anyway. A buzz bee thermal hunter will swap slam fire for having an extra couple feet per second on each shot when stock, as well as compatibility with the legendary k26 spring that normally give you between 100-120 fps when properly installed. Keep learning and exploring in the nerf hobby, and you'll learn all kinds of things like this in a couple years.
@@1Scimetar aight general, I won't let you down.
can you help me while i was modding i found out that my spring on the trigger mech was missing any ideas on where can i find it
Have you looked on the floor?
yup all gone im pretty sure my mom vaacumed it
probably il find it online or in a toy i have laying around
great video. i missed a mosfet on top of that switch, but thats just me being me
Very informative video. If I could add a piece of advice about soldering - if you introduce the solder directly to the heated up surfaces, it will make for smoother rounder solder points.
Most solder wires contain a small amount of flux. Introducing it to the soldering tip first, makes this flux evaporate and the solder becomes prone to dragging, when you remove the tip.
The fact that I played it back at half speed and didn’t see a frame with a shot other than the first shot. What is the frame rate of your camera?
Can you show how to rewire the ecs10
It is exactly the same. The wiring it identical. Only difference is the location of the battery housing.
cap, i discovered aa black painted stryfe on facebook marketplace for 3 dollars, is there anything i can do with that?
is there a way to unpaint? XD
Yes. Sandpaper.
What do you think, which stock motor is the best from the barricade/strife/modulus ecs-10 motors? It worth to change the strife motor to a stock ecs-10 or barricade motor? I wanna use it with 2-3 LiFePo (3X3,2V).
I have heard that the barricade motors are the best but I suspect the difference is not worth the effort. In my opinion, if you are going to upgrade the motors than you might as well switch to something considerable better.
If you are using LiFePo just upgrade the motors. Stock motors work best if you swap the metal brush pack with a carbon brush pack and run them with 2 - 3 IMRs.
Are you still doing commissions for Nerf blasters
Not at this time
@@CaptainXavier i mean like will you do one like later or for a video
No, I am not taking new commissions at this time.
Would a 2s lipo be strong enough for a full auto stryfe if I don't add a separate power source?
Depends on the motors
Come. On.
This is literally how I spent my day yesterday. Where was this 24 hours ago???
Make sure everyone knows that your 9 volt test setup wont turn high power motors. Then everyone will think thir solders are bad, leading them to re solder the motors 4 times. Just make sure you tell them...
Peace, brother!
Just give the motor a spin manually...once started they will spin. ;)
@@CaptainXavier haha, yeah, i know that NOW

How much is the fps if you use a imr? Why do people use dummy batteries? Does a upgrade flywheel make a difference; if so what’s the fps for a imr and better flywheels? What are key parts to have the best modded stryfe? Thanks guys, I’m new and learning modding.
A IMR? Um...about -50? You need 2 IMRs to make it work and it will give probably 15-25fps more? The two dummy batteries are to fill in the other two battery slots. If you run 3-4 IMRs in a stock blaster is will fry the internals.
As for the rest. Yes, wheels, cage, and motors all matter. It is best to replace them all. And all the wires and switches. And to use a LiPo Battery, not IMRs. It takes work and some money to get to the good stuff, but it is worth it.
Captain Xavier this is my first stryfe mod, should I get all the lipo stuff and all the motor, flywheel stuff, etc. what’s the best imr combo?

Can you do this with the stock motors/cage/flywheels?
Yes...but it will not work very well.
Captain Xavier also, there’s a trick that you can twist a yellow component and make the metal touch, and it would allow a higher voltage. Will it work for 3 imr’s?
Captain Xavier I’m gonna get my stryfe very soon, so I was wondering if just twisting the yellow component would work
