    Before commenting,please read this:
People in antiquity did not identify their ethnicity based on the language they speak. Life styles, customs and traditions were more important. E.g. Think about Early Roman Empire.
Name is an important parameter to analyze a person’s identity. Confusing part is name variations in different languages.
For instance Persian king Cyrus = Kiros = Keyhusrev (You see the change. When people called him in Persian, it was the same sound as when a person read Keyhusrev in Persian. I verified original name with an Iranian friend. It is Keyhusrev. Greek ears of Herodotus heard this sound as Kiros and probably some latin ears heard it as Cyrus - like a Roman name)
Tomyris => Tomris => Tomur => Temir (means “Iron” in Kazakh, Uzbekh, Kyrgyz) => Demir (means “Iron” in Turkish)
Let’s think about where she had lived. The Massagetae was an ancient tribal confederation placed in modern Turkmenistan, western Uzbekistan and Southern Kazakhstan.
Massagetaens had worshipped to the sun and sky. Iranians had more complex religions(more than one) which all have a creator of everything (the god as people name it nowadays)
Let’s see how old scholars attributed them
Procopius writes in History of the Wars Book III: The Vandalic War: "the Massagetae whom they now call Huns" (XI. 37.), there was a certain man among the Massagetae, well gifted with courage and strength of body, the leader of a few men; this man had the privilege handed down from his fathers and ancestors to be the first in all the Hunnic armies to attack the enemy (XVIII. 54.).
Evagrius Scholasticus (Ecclesiastical History. Book 3. Ch. II.): "and in Thrace, by the inroads of the Huns, formerly known by the name of Massagetae, who crossed the Ister without opposition".
According to Guive Mirfendereski at the Circle of Ancient Iranian Studies (CAIS), the Massagetae are synonymous with the Sakā haumavargā of South Asian historiography.
By the way I don’t consider Herodotus is a very reliable source but always a good starting point. According to Herodotus: “In their dress and mode of living the Massagetae resemble the Scythians. Each man has but one wife, yet all the wives are held in common; for this is a custom of the Massagetae and not of the Scythians.“I don’t know what to think about these claims but one take away would be about women in Massagaetans. Turkic tribes had different gender values than now, women were equal to men and they were also fighters.

Very pleasantly surprised by this movie! It shows what you can call Amazons as mentioned by Herodotus, the introduction of iron technology to an otherwise bronze culture, burial placement and offerings, and several historically accurate details of the nomadic life. The bad reviews all seem to be mad about the fact that it was made by Kazak people. In the movie however, they did not mention once that Massagettae were Turkic. I'm not super familiar with the politics of the area so I wouldn't comment on that. It's a silly thing to fight over genetics of long gone people. I personally loved this movie. It's well made and showed Cyrus the Great the respect he deserved even in this version of the history. Which made me respect the filmmakers more. I believe there are 3 versions of his death in historical records, this one preferred by early historians the most.

They aren't tho. Kazakhs are Turkic. Scythians and all Scythian tribes including the Massagetae, Saka, Sarmatians, Alans, Iasygez were all Iranian people who spoke Eastern Iranian languages, related to modern day languages like Ossetian, Pashto, Pamiri, Yaghnobi etc. There is controversy because this movie makes the Scythians look like Kazakhs and speak the Kazakh language. When in reality, Scythians resembled Europeans, they had high Indo-European ancestry and most of them had blonde and red hair with light features. They were Iranian just like Cyrus

Most iranians are blonde with red hair today? No!
You are angry that the movie is depicting massagetae looking as the people that live in that region today... pure hypocrisy,
I can name you hundreds of films and regions today in which Europeans do the same thing or claim the people living there today are the same people as ancient times like.. the Egyptians for one example.

It would have made it possible to establish the different characters deeper and made the intrigues stronger and darker. Almira Tursyn is as strong as she is beautiful and makes an outstanding role performance. The make-up artists did a superb job and the characters age credibly. @@BrotherGamingTR Ancient DNA studies from the kurgans and comparative genomics clearly shows that Sakas (Eastern Scythians) were among the ancestors of modern Kazakhs. Kazakh genomes are about 1/3 European/Scythian, about 1/3 Turkic and about 1/3 Mongol on average. The Scythian genome was the foundation for evolution of the Kazakh genetics as these Iranic ancestors absorbed later invasions of Huns, Turkic peoples and Mongols. Anthropological studies on skulls from ancient kurgans show a gradual shift from European to mixed to Asian features in the apearance of the nomads who lived in Kazakhstan between 1000 BC to 500 AD. This is to say that modern Kazakhs are very much entitled to claim Tomiris and other Sakas among their ancestors.

Usually, people do not have the time or patience to read a book or history and are deceived by watching an easy story(a movie). This movie has a lot of historical flaws:
    1. The people of the Massagetaes, Savromats(Sarmatian), and Dahae tribes were themselves Iranians, so their faces should look like Iranians.
    2. The Turks and Mongols migrated to these lands almost ten centuries later due to climate change.
    3. There are three different stories of the death of Cyrus from the three Greek historians:
*Ctesias; his history was based on Persian archives and state records, and therefore, was far superior to Herodotus' history.
*Herodotus' story of doubtful authenticity, is full of romantic stories, exotic anecdotes, court gossip, and lists that are of dubious reliability.
*Xenophon; claims that Cyrus died peacefully in his capital.
Of these three, the story of Ctesias is more plausible. Cyrus’s conquests in Central Asia were probably genuine, since a city in farthest Sogdiana was called Cyreschata or Cyropolis (see Britannica).
4- This movie does not even correspond to the story of Herodotus, and it tells some lies!
Tomyris's husband was Rustam and not Argun!
Spargapises had committed suicide in captivity, according to Herodotus!
5- This movie grossed $1.3 million against a production budget of $6.5 million. Give this money to Sasha Cohen(Borat) so that he does not make any movies against you.

It is funny to watch the angry reaction of the Iranians to this movie. I guess they are not up to date with modern genetic and anthropological studies on remains from kurgans in Kazakhstan, which show a gradual transition of the originally Iranic Sakas (Eastern Scythians) towards mixed and then Asian composition in terms of their appearance and genetics. This transition took place between 1000 AD and 300AD. By the end of this process the Sakas were assimilated by the incoming Hunnic and Turkic peoples coming from the East. Facial reconstruction shows predominantly Asian appearance in the Altai and Siberian Sakas by 700-500 AD. The genomes of modern-day Kazakhs are about 1/3 Indo-European/Scythian (or even earlier Botai culture), 1/3 Turkic and 1/3 Mongol and this reflects very well the history of the nomads who lived in the Great Steppe in Kazakhstan for thousands of years. Thus, Kazakhs are entitled to make this movie about their ancestors - as these Sakas were our ancestors, not of modern day Iranians. Moreover, Sakas constantly fought with Persians and looked very different from them. Persians themselves portrayed them as very different from themselves on the relief frescos on the walls of Persepolis. Persians are pictures with curvy hair and beards and narrow faces whereas as Sakas are always pictured with straight/wavy hair, almond-shaped eyes and raised cheek bones. Kazakhs preserved the original way of life and even clothing of the Scythians for hundreds of years. So, the brave nomad queen Tomiris is OUR heroine and not the one for the Persians! She herself would not want to be counted as a Persian for sure...

Who ever said she was persian? Iranian ≠ persian. The Scythians were ethnically, linguistically, and culturally IRANIC. Moreover, the whole culture of ALL turkic peoples after ruling over persians is primarily and heavily influenced by their culture (which is why they're called a Persianate society).

    • @aabzhano
      @aabzhano 2 года назад

@@hisholiness4537 The Scythians were ethnically, linguistically, and culturally IRANIC.
      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
This was never really proven considering that:
      1) Scythians did not have their own written literature, let alone Iranic literature.
      2) Scythians were a very mixed bunch geographically (western Scythians, eastern Sakas, Tien-Shan Sakas, Pazyryk Sakas, Sarmations etc). We already know from studies on skulls and DNA that the OLDEST Scythians actually lived in the Altay mountains (nomadic lifestyle evolved first in the Eastern part of the Steppe).
      3. Scythians have existed for about 500-700 yers and they were changing morphologically all of the time as the Great Steppe was continuously receiving migrants from Siberia, Altay and other eastern territories occupied by the ancestors of the Turkic peoples.
      .
Therefore, it is naive and wrong to claim that all Scythians were IRANIC. Perhaps some were, but others were likely not, some looked distinctly Asian/Mongoloid from the earliest periods of the Scythian culture - look up reconstructions of the frozen mummies of the Pazyryk and Altay Sakas and the faces of Scythians on their golden jewelry found in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

In that time there were diferrent dieties and customs than today and also different than what we understand today that the ancient Massagetae and Persians should be. TOMIRIS come from root "MIR" which means "WORLD" or "EARTH AND HEAVEN" +suffix "-is" with meaning "child or succesor of" or "coming from". Tomiris defeated the King of Kings and of World and of all 4 Corners of World, the Kyros (Cyrus) the Great. Finally after the famous battle, when Kyros was killed, Tomiris immersed Kyroses' head into a bag full of blood and said her famous speach: "Let allow him to satisfy his neverending thirsty for blood." So Tomiris had to understood very well the toxic Kyroses' character and ill ideology of Kyroses' empire machinery. He was a genius military general and a brilliant political leader with grand ambitions, with a macro managerial approach, and a globlal desig His vision was to form a synthesis or universal civilization on cooperative and integrative bases incorporating with respect through inter-learning processes all cultures and civilizations of the time. He was also a man of great energy and talents but a man of wisdom and tolerance. His charismatic leadership transcended all boundaries of races, colors, religions, and nationalities. He was highly regarded by Persians and many non-Persians in all corners of the extended Empire. Persians called him the "Father,"
Greeks and Babylonians called him the "Law-Giver," and Jews called him the Savor and Deliverer (Cook, 1983;Herodotus, 1984; Olmstead, 1948)

Cyrus was the King of the world, the King of Kings since there were no more kings in the realm (Brown, 1995;Olmstead, 1948; Herodotus, 1984).

TOMIRIS - Absolutely Turkic. Here are 2 absolute proofs and facts.
    1) Ethimologically: Tomyris meaning iron in english comes from Tomris, an ancient Turkish word which is “demir” in current Turkish. And it is always similar word in any kind of Turkish languages. There are many examples in history. Just like Timur Han. His name was also same. The reasons will come in 2nd proof. Actaully Greek recorders recorded her names as tomir+is, tomyr+is or demir+ys or something like that. Just how could say her name.
    2) Culturally: In Turks, the naming was not given, it was something to be earned. Since “demir” was the strongest material known in the past to become the topic of an “age”, it was given to strong people such as rulers. Tomris and timur were just like that.
    3) Researches. Many countries such as russians, other Turkish countries and the rest scientifically researched central asia and southern russian, in short possible sychtians or saka zone to conclude for she and also scythians were Turkic. Why? Because culturally they were totally Turkish, buildings, beliefs or living styles. Every excavation pointed into that. For example many scythian kurgans were found, a classic Turkish structure type. Even its name shows how Turkish was it, given to its aggluginative language structure: kur+gan means (the thing) built. The words and suffixes are still being used so widely.
Plus, Turks were the first craftsman who were able to craft things out of iron, according to chinese scripts. They were so famed that, these people were named after iron in their language. yeah Turk mean iron and also its kanji was shaped as a helmet, just like the shape of their known origins by them, altay mountains.
    4) Literature: There are many legends written by them in Turkish still exist. Well this may not be proof for her, but the people she ruled and her origins.
and persians? come on, they were only kids playing in kindergarten compared to dates she lived. and with no power at that. and i dont believe so they have this “demir” word in their langauge.

The big problem with claiming Tomiris by modern Iranians is that those Scythians were actually the enemies of the Persians and this was not just a single battle. Their nomadic lifestyle and culture were very completely different from those of the settled Persians. These nomads called their land Turan. Turan was the enemy of Iran. The Turanians of the Great Steppe absorbed a lot of later migrants from the East including the Huns, Avars and Turkic peoples. They gradually became Turcified but this happened over hundreds of years. You can see that in the features of the skulls of the Scythians from the burial mounds as they show a gradual transition from Indo-European to more Asian shapes. The genetics of modern Turkic peoples, especially the Kazakhs shows great genetic diversity revealing this multilayered history. For example, my own tribe the Argyn, all males carry the G1 Y chromosome haplotype, which came originally from West Persia. Also, culturally and spiritually Kazakhs are much more similar to those ancient Turanians, while Uzbeks are more similar to Persians. So, yes, Tomiris is very much relevant to modern Kazakhs as the Scythians were among our ancestors and their nomadic culture lived on through the ages and became the Kazakh culture. Just like the Scythian women, Kazakh women were brave warriors who often fought alongside their men and they were not slaves to their men wrapped in cloth as in Persia.

Ancient DNA studies from the kurgans and comparative genomics clearly shows that Sakas (Eastern Scythians) were among the ancestors of modern Kazakhs.

First, R1a_z93 haplogroup which was common in Scythians an Iranic haplogroup. This haplogroup is very broadly distributed among the peoples of Central Asia, South Asia and various Turkic peoples. This haplogroup is most common (>30%) in the South Siberian Altai region of Russia among the local Turkic peoples, it is actually very rare among the Iranians. Second, Scythians did not comprise a single group culturally or genetically. The Western Scythians were very different from the Sakas (Eastern Scythians), who had a very large Altaic (East-Eyrasian) genetic component from the beginning of their origin. R1a was dominant in the Western Scythians but the Sakas were much more diverse, we know from genetic studies that they had R1a, R1b, G1, G1, I2a2, N1, R1b1b1, R1b1b2, G2a and J2. mtDNA and autusomal genetic comparisons show that among the modern peoples the closest to West-most Sakas are Tatars, Bashkirs and the closest to East-most Sakas, such as Pazyryk Sakas are modern Khakas and Kazakh peoples. Far from all Kazakhs have C haplogroup, large Kazakh tribes such as Argyn (G1 + J1) and Kypchak (R1b + J2) have no C haplogroup present and these tribes certainly represent products of Scythian and/or Iranic assimilation by the Turkic peoples in what is now Kazakhstan.

What a fake movie just like the entire turkic history. Tomyris was an iranic woman, she was a scythian. And cyrus having a war against her isnt accurate but one of the theories.

Not gonna read through your sad panturk comment, tomyris is an eastern iranic woman that even spoke a similar language to other iranic languages such as farsi, kurdish, pashto and others.
The sad part over here is turks claiming she is turkic and lived her life giving herself title as khatun, now isnt that redicoulous? Get a life. The world doesnt revolve around your ethnicity that wasnt relevant perhaps until 20th century under ataturk 👍

According to Dandamayev, the stories told by Greek historians have more of the color and smell of a novel than the description of a real event. Although we do not know the exact truth of Cyrus' death, it is clear that he was buried in Pasargadae.

What makes you think that these stories ar etolk by Greek historians? Worth mentioning Scythians weren't Greek, but rather their enemies.

Scythians were definitely a nomadic culture (no other culture would survive in the steppes of Central Asia) and they contributed culturally and genetically to all later nomads in the area.
