    Was just looking at this for Black Friday. Already had a frustrating experience with my orange Jackson SBIV that I got back in August...You're right that if I'd gotten this kind of thing dropped in my lap I would /not/ have been a happy camper. Good looking out, thank you for being honest and straightforward!

    Mine came with a VERY nice neck, no truss adjustment needed, immediately ordered an overwound GFS PJ set and CTS audio taper pots, whipped out the old fret rocker and took care of only a few of frets, minor fret sprout on several, oiled the board, and added a shim to slightly raise the board to lower the strings a bit and add additional saddle adjustment. So, I have a well set up bass, killer tones, and only have under 225 invested including a Zoom B1 Four processor. I understand what you are saying but disagree about 'never have been shipped'. I buy into inexpensive instruments knowing I will be modding / setting them up for playability and personal needs. This guitar is surprisingly nice for what it is, and for the guitarist that I am, serves my bottom end needs. Next up will be stripping, re-contouring the body, perhaps adding maple veneer to the top of the body and headstock, and refinishing. Geez, make it your own, shoot, for 99 bucks, it is worth the price of admission for just the neck, if you are so inclined to build your own or add it to an aftermarket body, just saying...

      You have to be a little controversial to get views, unfortunately. I do think something like an improperly CNCed neck and body should never have left the factory after working in manufacturing for a couple of years though. I appreciate what you did to yours and I plan to fix this one up when I have some time after the first of the year, so I will definitely look into the mods you listed. Thanks for your feedback!

      If the neck was off plane or angled in the pocket and required remounting the bridge or adjusting the pocket, that is a totally different matter, absolutely… Yep, no excuse for that, I totally agree, it’s going back I don’t care the price point.

    I had one I purchased from Guitar Center and I was amazed how good it sounded for what it is. A change of strings, a light setup and it was playing real nice, good tone as well. Neck seemed a bit big and fat for a short scale. Not bad overall.

      Glad you like it, I agree the neck seems very wide for the scale.

    I got mine on sale for $130 and if I hadn't intended to use it to practice doing repairs on, I would have exchanged it, hoping for one with fewer problems. It needed a fret level because some of the frets on the treble side are too high compared to the bass side. The foam was missing under the pickups, so they were too low and wouldn't come up, and sounded very weak. After I replaced the missing foam and raised them way up they sound much better. Their output is still low, but maybe they're supposed to be that way. The truss rod and intonation needed big adjustments, but that's why they're adjustable so no biggie. The fret ends were super sharp, worse I've ever seen, so they needed to be filed but that's not unusual on an inexpensive guitar. The nut, bridge, tuners, jack & controls all work with no complaints. No finish flaws at all, I like the light weight, excellent balance and reverse-style on the P pickup. The "abalone" fretboard inlays look surprisingly good.

      I haven't had time to repair mine yet but I'm planning on levelling the frets and shimming the neck on it. I also don't like that they used a Precision style bridge when the guitar was obviously designed for a narrower "metric" bridge that mounts with 4 screws. The string spacing is extremely wide at the heel of the neck...

    • @michaelmaas6460
      @michaelmaas6460 2 года назад +1

      @@pawnshopguitarguy I hadn't noticed the bridge (maybe because as a guitar player I never play bass above the 12th fret), but it's 1/4" wider than all my other basses, including my full-size Fender Jazz and Ibanez SR500!

    • @pawnshopguitarguy
      @pawnshopguitarguy  2 года назад

      @@michaelmaas6460 I just assumed it was a Precision bridge, that's freaking nuts. I might see if I can put a narrower bridge on mine, I should have one laying around somewhere...

    From what I know about Sweetwater is that the instrument needs to cost $299 or more before they do their 55 point check before being shipped out. The lower priced units go out as they come from the mfg.

    • @pawnshopguitarguy
      @pawnshopguitarguy  2 года назад +1

      That's good to know about Sweetwater. Supposedly Mitchell has someone check out the instruments here in the USA before they ship, but there's no way anyone touched this one.

    • @JD-vj4go
      @JD-vj4go 2 года назад

      Does sweetwater even do that anymore? Last couple guitars I ordered from them were over 299.00 and had definitely not been inspected.

      @pawnshopguitarguy  2 года назад +1

      @@JD-vj4go That's a good question, I just figure I'll have to set it up if I get a good deal mail order these days.

      @JD-vj4go 2 года назад +1

      @@pawnshopguitarguy I don't mind doing the setups but the last guitar I ordered had two bad tuning pegs and the one before that had a serious neck issue similar to your bass. No way they could have missed it doing an inspection but looking at the paperwork I saved there is a card saying they passed the 55 point inspection. So I guess they still say they are doing it.

    • @pawnshopguitarguy
      @pawnshopguitarguy  2 года назад +1

      @@JD-vj4go That's a management problem, either someone is just checking the boxes because it's too much trouble to perform the checks (lazy) or management tells them to approve and ship it anyway due to cost concerns.

    I'm very happy with mine. Stock strings were really dead but that's about all. It's the only SS bass I've played with a nice chunky neck profile. Light and well balanced too. Just curious, after two weeks that you didn't plug it in? Also budget instruments might need a shim occasionally, after all Luthier's have been shimming guitars for years no matter what the price.

    I mentioned to someone once that I wanted to shim the neck of a guitar because the action was so high that lowering the saddles made no difference at all the neck relief and they said it wouldn't make any difference. I'm now starting to think this person is a plonker.
    I do like an orange guitar, either a six string or a four string. This Mitchell bass looks cool and for a beginner, that's half the battle!

    • @pawnshopguitarguy
      @pawnshopguitarguy  2 года назад +1

      I haven't actually shimmed it yet, but I have put them in several other guitars over the years and I have found sandpaper and pieces of plastic in guitars from the factory used as shims.

      @@pawnshopguitarguy On playing a 2014 Fender Blacktop that I'd purchased blind (ie online), open and fretted chords at the first three frets sounded atrocious. Ended up paying £60.00 to get it shimmed. The shop owners must have wet themselves laughing at me behind my back! A bit like carpenters getting called out to just to assemble some IKEA Billy bookcases! I know someone who does that on the regular too 😂
