Love the reaction! If you haven’t considered doing so already, you should check out Grace by Jeff Buckley! His performances inspired Thom Yorke, as well as more recent artists like Lana and Phoebe. He only released this one (complete) album before he tragically drowned in 1997, three years after Grace’s release. But the album is widely considered to be a masterpiece.
@ i don’t agree. If you look at it from the academic music’s perspective they are too unique to be put in any existing genre. Form, chord progression and construction, patterns. Radiohead is about interweaving, process, micro changes that lead to a big change. The form of each song is so individual for them that it makes sense to talk about it. Sometimes it is not clear at all whether there is a chorus. They also use quite dissonant chords, which are usually not found in pop music: hard, angular, irregular. A lot of irregularity, melancholy, reflection, looking inside, at the wall. This is the peculiarity.
@ damn, even Wikipedia is confused. Look how many genres are listed there: art rock alternative rock electronic music experimental rock progressive rock britpop art pop electronic rock grunge
@@TheNameIsViwares they have, at various points in their career, explored each of the genres that Wikipedia have listed. That doesn't mean the Wiki is 'confused'. It means they have just tried a few different things. A lack of a chorus, dissonant chords, unusual song structures - none of these are unique to them, and none of them are the kind of ideas that would define a new genre. These are just some interesting variations. Even with their most experimental work, you can point to something that came before that was more relevant to genre-shaping (like how inspired Kid A is by Aphex Twin)
My Iron Lung is a response to the success that Creep brought them. An iron lung keeps a person alive but restricts their movements; the song kept the band afloat but was also creatively stifling.
@@bennshouts Yes the best line in the song is almost an insult to their fans "suck, suck your teenage thumb, toilet trained and dumb, when the power goes out we'll just hum" awesome, and The Bends is an often fatal condition caused by scuba divers not gradually rising to the surface, a metaphor for their sudden massive fame as a result of Creep. All very deep stuff and you can kind of see why a lot of people think this album sounded the death knell for Brit-Pop.
So fine watching your hypnotic journey! And esp love your line "you are just ready for whatever they give you” - completely true (and false) at the same time - one of many quintessential Radiohead paradoxes.
My lady and I caught the singer live in Auckland in October. He did whole Radiohead songs with two guitars, two pianos and a synth array. "Reckoner" off their In Rainbows album was gorgeous. A very humble guy.
Let's make a petition benn to react to smashing pumpkins' mellon collie and the infinite sadness... you won't be prepared benn... maybe it's the best double album ever... word.
Definitely my personal favourite Radiohead album and has been since I first bought it upon its initial release. It's their most cohesive album from beginning to end, in my opinion. Guitar-heavy Radiohead is also my favourite Radiohead. Which explains why I like this one so much.
The bends is a favourite of mine. Its before thom and greenwood went into the stratosphere of modern composerhood. Two budding talents lighting up a bulb that creates little shadows of their selves.. but only the shadows.. So it feels saddish
Always enjoy your Radiohead reactions - The Bends is very special to me cos I bought it when it came out and fell for it big time. I always loved three guitar radiohead :)
i heard this album for the first time from a friend i met my 9th grade of high school year 2000. I heard this before ok computer and what i was going through as a kid at the time, i connected with the bends the most. still all time favorite album from them.
Great reaction! I didn't realise when i first heard Bullet Proof all those years ago how much those words would mean to me now at nearly 50 years old 😢👌
fun fact about just: it spawned from thom, the singer and jonny, the guitarist having a mini-competition between eachother to see who could fit the most chords into a song, which is easily the geekiest competition ive ever heard of. jonny ultimately won though, with 12 chords.
Bought this album on release when I was 17 years old. Listened to it to death with a good friend of mine. My favourite Radiohead album. Fake Plastic Tree’s still breaks my heart. Good times ❤️
On a technical level I think ok computer is their best album but on a relistenability level that’s the bends, all day, every day. Not literally, but you catch my drift.
Personally my favourite album of all time. I’ve listened to loads and loads of albums and this one for me is just better than everything else. Whenever I listen to some other Radiohead stuff I get to end and think, I like this, but why am I not listening to the bends
I still shed a tear sometimes when I listen to Fake Plastic Trees, even now so many years later. This album is intensively personal, Thom gets away from that in the following albums but I still like it and wonder what Radiohead would've sounded like if they stayed with this more "rock" template. I would imagine still pretty great.
Love this album, you can really see some of the same themes and ideas as OK Computer starting to flourish. Fun fact, the reason behind the distorted vocals and the subtle slurring on Planet Telex is because apparently Thom was laying on the floor super drunk when recording the vocals
Hi cutie, for me this is the fourth best Radiohead álbum, but chronologically the first one that caught their sound so different to others bands of their era, they were meant to greatness since here.
thom's vocals on planet telex is one take, lying down on the floow drunk in the early hours. the bends is another name for decompression sickness - scuba diver's get it from rising too fast underwater. so the bends also alludes to the pressure of the rapid rise to fame
Would you please consider reacting to Natalia Kills - Perfectionist album I think you would really like it! and even her sophomore Trouble. She is the X factor New Zealand judge who got cancelled back in 2015
@ oh shoot 🥹 well i’d still be down to watch a revision :) i’ll never forgive humans for cancelling her. I mean what she said was distasteful but there are way worse celebrities out there.
is there a way to request a reaction? like in patreon? tysm girl i really hope you give Poppy's Negative Space a listen if you enjoy radiohead/deftones/spiritbox/architect/linkinpark
Thanks!

@@bennshouts Yeah seriously they are great! And no probs, love your reactions, thanks for doing them :)
A Moon Shaped Pool their last album is stunning. Perfect for a gloomy day. Great reaction legend!

Radiohead’s music is so unique and unusual that almost all of the critics categorise them as a new genre of music
Literally, you really cannot place them anywhere!
Absolutely massive Radiohead fan here, but they have not created a unique genre. That's just objectively not true

My favourite Radiohead album. Often overshadowed by OK Computer in my opinion. Glad you got to experience it and connected with it.

You should check out the album Grace by Jeff Buckley. It was a big inspiration for this album, especially Thom's vocals.

And now hearing it you can hear so many bands who have used their sound!
@bennshouts And yeah, that is, the first two albums of Coldplay are so pretty the same sound of The Bends. Listen them and you'll know.
