  • Well, good news is that she seems to run fine. No water from the pee hole though so I shut her down and figured I manage well just remove the lower unit and keep it inside for the winter.
    I'll do an impeller inspection video but I will not replace the impeller until spring. There's no use letting a brand new impeller sit stationary for months on end. I'm sure it's better for the impeller in the long run.
    I have never serviced an outboard so this should not be taken as a "how to" video, but it will certainly give you all a rough idea (as years and models will vary) what you may or may not encounter.
    Do some research, make sure you cover the essentials and it should go relatively smooth!

    Thanks Dave, I was fibbed to a bit on this trade but I was OK with it as soon as I knew it ran well. The peehole was clogged which was my first clue I had been fibbed. He said he took it to the river a lot. I figure it hasn't been in the water for some time now.
    I'll certainly keep you in mind if I have any trouble plopping her back in. Knowing me, I'm bound to find some sort of issue!! LoL
    Thanks for coming by!

    I just bought this boat motor and trailer for 300. The guy said it ran, but needed a fuel pump. He also said the water tube needed aligned. Come to find out the guy was a lying sack of shit. The F pump was fine. Pulled the carbs off and they were full of goop you could not even get to the jets without digging the goop away first. Then the exhaust plate had to come off and all the goop and corrosion had to be cleaned, tried compress air everything, pee hole was plugged solid. I spent 20 bucks total, and a few days and got her running great. 68 merc 500!

    Fine job Capt!! I hope you let it warm up enough for the thermostat to open!! It won't start peeing till that opens eh!!☺

    Far from genius my friend! LoL I just like to get my hands dirty.
    We Canadians are Metric as well since the early 70's, this motor however is a 69 and was born Imperial.
    You'll have to wait til the spring though for the motors next stage, she's tarped and gone to sleep for the winter. I will do a impeller inspection video soon though, but wont install the new one until spring, no use it sitting losing it's shape all winter.
    Thanks for dropping by!!

    Actually I didn't know there was a thermostat, I assumed it was just an open flow. I did run it for a bit though (not long cuz I was not wanting to damage it with no pee) I accelerated a bit in forward to check if prop was functioning and same with reverse and she still didn't piss for me, so I shut her down. Impellers are a cheap easy fix and I assume this one is pooched and probably has not been changed out in some time.
    Thanks for popping by!

      Hi Goregoon, I have a similar 1971 80hp, I have not been able to find the thermostat, where is yours located? Thank you.

    Those units are easy the only issues the ever have is the rubber pump or the water tube going to the power unit will freeze and split...let me know if you have any trouble on reassembly...Dave

    did you shoot any video from replacing the bottom end. I really would like to ask you a few question about replacing the lower unit. I really didn't pay attention when I pulled it and I'm not sure if I'm missing anything.

    I ask because I getting a 73 for free but it has been sitting for about 20 years, so I'm wondering if it will start after I lube up the pistons.

    • @Goregoonswasteofspace
      @Goregoonswasteofspace  9 лет назад

      +harshband My guess is yes, these things are bulletproof. Just like you say, lube up the pistons first and crank her a little before putting the plugs in and firing it up. I would suggest changing the impeller 100% as it will be brittle and useless.

    I just dropped same lower unit and notice the shift linkage didnt work before I dropped it but when out it looks like theres two rods one that goes up through motor and one on lower unit I am very curious about what connects these so I can put together and get back on the water. i have the same motor that turns to put lower unit in gear.please reply.

      I had a hard time putting my lower unit back together. I also have an old merc like this one. What I did is take the long transmission rod out of the lower unit and put it up in the engine first then placed the lower unit on that. Did you ever get yours on the water?

    Got a part number for the water pump? I’m in the same situation.

      I sold that beast a while ago, if you haven't by now, you can look it up. It was a pretty common part. If I can find the number for you I will post it though.
      Thanks for dropping by.

    I got a thunderbolt 500 very close to your engine. I am having a hard time getting the splines to line up on the shift shaft . Did your lower install easily. Any thought would be helpful.

      +Homer1900 1 Have you tried putting it in with the throttle in the reverse position?

    • @robertwalker5555
      @robertwalker5555 8 лет назад

      No but if I do that wont I have to put the lower unit in reverse also ? I got it in place now but one thing, If the throttle is in reverse, by hand witch way should the prop turn?

    I have the same engine I removed all the bolts and I still cannot get it down. The lower unit dropped about a quarter of an inch and that's it. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a shift linkage I need to remove? Please help.

    • @Goregoonswasteofspace
      @Goregoonswasteofspace  8 лет назад

      I'm not sure what to tell you without being there to look at it. I am not overly familiar with these motors to begin with. If you left one bolt on to keep the unit from dropping, did you remember to remove it? If you are moving 1/4 in or so tells me the bolts are off (except maybe what I just suggested).
      Try moving the throttle control to different positions, maybe you have a gear with some pressure on it perhaps?

    • @nolanjustus2215
      @nolanjustus2215 8 лет назад

      +Goregoon Thank you. I have all my bolts disconnected. And it down about 1/4in. I haven't tried to move the shifter I will try that. Maybe it's stuck? Thanks again.

    How long did it sit before running again?

    • @Goregoonswasteofspace
      @Goregoonswasteofspace  9 лет назад

      +harshband Not sure how long it sat before I fired it up. Buddy claimed he was using it but I highly doubt it considering the pee hole was clogged with mud and the impeller doesn't seem to be functional.
