Excellent. Zorn isn't arrogant to raw blues and rock influences. That is the reason why he sounds so modern.
i agree zorn isnt arrogant :D
The best part about this is that John Zorn can sit there and enjoy his own freaking amazing show
For him it must be like a magic radio that let's you adjust the music the way that's the most ecstatic for you

It's crazy !
im a snob, I own a million CDs and have thousands of hours of music downloaded but I can't get enough of Zorn - same league as Coltrane, Zappa, Shostakovich, Mingus - a giant of joy and beauty and it fukcing rocks
hell yes.
Sorry, but Shostakovich was in another level. And I really love the works of Miles, Coltrane, Mingus, Zappa et al.
Yes, of course. And now, there's the pressure of market survival combined with political repression (no surprise you can't find serious political statements from most of the famous artists). The US is deeply militarized, and anyone can see the fear of the artists when they are in the position to denounce something, being viewed as "terrorists", etc.
In a historical review this is coherent with Stalin's Thermidor and his collaboration politic with western imperialism.
what are some good Shostakovich albums? @yaknjorgl@@riveravaldez
If this lasted 5 days straight, I think I would probably still listen to all of it.
I drum everyday because I heard Joey Baron. My favorite drummer and all around inspiration.

Thanks for adding the titles and time stamps. I just spent a half-hour searching the internet trying to find the date of the show and possible setlist before it occurred to me to check the comments :)
@@dc_pratt Cheers! I use this concert when teaching improvisation, so the timestamps really help 😊
I've kept coming back to this concert for years and years and years. It's one of my favourite performances in the world, and it never stops ceasing to be inspiring for me.
Seriously! I heard this a few years ago, and since then have considered it one of the finest moments of jazz ever, coming back and playing/listening at least once every couple months!
here too... never get's boring... a masterpiece...
It never stops ceasing? ;)
Watching JZ conduct these special needs virtuosos is beyond inspirational.
"...special needs virtuosos..." That made me laugh.
@@wylieroth3145me too.... bloody tops!
I love this. Ribot is a monster and Zorn is a madman.
Zorn's notation is amazingly complex. Not only that, but he's been using the hand signals since the 80s, when he composed "game pieces," which are structured improvisations built around certain set rules (Steven Soderbergh used to direct films the same way). But most strikingly, imo, is how his direction intersects with his interest in the esoteric and occult. It's like he's conjuring the music. If you have not seen it live, then you have not witnessed its crackling, immediate power.
Now you know
Witness deez nutz
Trevor Dunn - the ultimate bass badass!
I like the Marc/John dynamic. Like clearly John is a control freak and wants to tell everyone what to do, but Marc's attitude is like, "ok, I'll play your little game, but I'm gonna shred the guitar and completely steal the spotlight while doing it!"
Every time, this is brilliant. May this not be forgotten in the dark depths of youtube.
marc ribot is totaly awesome
Rodrigo Emerick вы блять музыку то слышите? а? приебались со своим рибо
мискам ниарелуд да, слышим, и рибо просто потрясно играет
I never thought Zorn would do retro-70's fusion. I am pleasantly surprised. The 80's are finally over.
Super, never heard of john Zorn, IT SOUNDS great......just TWO chords and go.......and all goes..........just great....top musicians an a great good sound on youtube......
Man, that guitarist is amazing! He also has an EXCELLENT picking technique.
...I wish I were more like him 😅
i dont think il ever get bored with this concert,a little LSD really brings it into its own,
muhaha ... best comment...
John is a massively multitalented man but I think this video is all the proof you need to show he is in a league of his own as a conductor and band leader. Luckily he has a highly psychic and equally talented band to make wonders like this possible.
Imagine working your whole life to master a single style of music; this band masters a dozen. Totally unreal.
Excellent. Du grand Jazz. Le guitariste est magnifique.
John Zorn makes jazzcore
Also, das ist der Hammer! Habe heute das zum ersten Mal gesehen und gehört. Vielleicht ist er sogar ein Verwandter von mir. Gefühlt auf jedem. Bin begeistert.
Zorni
I can't just listen to this, I also have to watch to see Zorn pointing at people.
They are all trying to impress him when he do that
I totally agree. It is an aesthetically pathological case of emperor's new clothes - haven't these people ever listened to Cream's "Wheels of Fire". Towards the end when Cream became over-bloated, they were savagely slammed (with some justification) for their uber-wankathons that bored everyone to death.
But at least they had the bottle to accept that criticism at the time. At their peak they even had Leonard Bernstein raving about how good they were.
However - they never sounded as bad as this! This stuff reminds me of Big Brother and the Holding Company!
I love Marc Ribot's playing with Tom Waits - but Wha' da ...
And someone here is talking about Zorn in the same galactic supercluster as Coltrane? but Wha' da ...
Zappa?! Frank would eat this stuff on a cold hotdog while waiting in the snow for a cab, "colder than a flat frog on a Philadelphia freeway in February" (Waits)
But seriously, the worst aspect of this stuff is its pretentious self-aggrandising aspirations to the Big Face Money!
Aint got it. Emperor's New Clothes - call the tailor ...
I totally disagree. This music is fantastic. I just wanted to emphasize that I like Zorn's engagement.
Hooboy...what to say.
When I lurch through the musical wonderland that overwhelms me in sheer volume, brilliance and trashiness, I find that the most rewarding of the lot is not immediately recognized on first listen. Or second. Or twentieth.
Then a day comes along when despite your reticence, you put it on the table and 'click', the light comes on. Such is it with Zorn.
The sheer power of this group reminds me of a stage coach which if not properly reined, will end in disaster. Zorn owns this team, completely.
Everytime I listen to and watch this my hair stands on end. Pure joy in motion.
Apparently, I've reached the intelligent end of RUclips.
1. Little Bittern
2. Anulikwutsayl
3. Exodus

5. Lilin
Saw the Dreamers 3 times so far! So much more than jam band bull..I know (over 100 Dead shows). They are the real deal. Can't wait to see them in Victoriaville May 2013. This video is amazing!
@bezinsky I was there and I got to say that one thing that was quite as amazing as the concert itself was seeing the amount of people that actually left during the show (I guess most of them had come for Avishai Cohen who was playing first; that was quite boring).
Zorn or the others didn't seem to care for one second though. And the good thing is that in the end, you knew that the people that had stayed were there for a good reason!
Awesome show...!
Beyond Madness. ....outstanding!
One of my all time favourites! Marc Ribot at his best...one of THE BEST GUITAR of all time IMHO!
So, why would anyone give this thumbs down? This is a shred all the way...do I ever wish I had the opportunity to take this down front stage all the way!
+Jan Erik Callne ISIS accounts for all 102 downvotes, bastards
i need this concert every week!
what a show what a show what a show
I love this performance!! Amazing!!! John is a Genius!!! Great band!!!! 👊👊🎸🎹🔥
What a band. Exodus ... just fabulous.
I hope Geoff Nicholson sees this- as a big fan of both Zorn and Ribot, he will adore it. Love watching Zorn conduct- great energy!
This is soooo joyful
I can't help smiling
Damn they are great
I don't know, man...I can't find the words....awesome is an understatement
very very good music from John zorn and his group
un des shows les plus malade que j'ai vu
Such amazing musicians... Baron in particular, I've always enjoyed... such diversity!
THE POINTING AT PEOPLE IS CALLED ORCHESTRATING MUSICIANS THIS IS COMPOSED BY ZORN ALL OF THE INSTRUMENTS GUITAR ORGAn xylophone BASS everything is composed by zorn so if he is orchestrating people it is because he wants his music played a certain way AS YOU CAN SEE EVERYONE HAS A PIECE OF SHEET MUSIC AND THEY ARE ALL SIGHTREADING
They aren’t sight reading. Site reading means reading on first sight, not reading by sight. Jeez.
a pleasure to hear see those guys playing ensemble
What a bunch of ingenious people - Zorn, Ribot, Baron... cannot get better! I would not mind to die after such brilliant performance.
Can't get enough of John Zorn

11:44~ Idk why exactly, but I just really love this part haha. The way he smacks the drums with such attitude. It's just great. It's great.
This is beautiful work. Indescribably beautiful. I'm genuinely over here in a trance of sorts as I stare & listen to this 😍

Oh John ... U re the best !
Marc Ribot, one of the few focking real guitrist in our world!
tru rel guitrist yas
Great performance!
-this is what i call a band! playing all together with guts!!!!!
@CBurton - Yeah I know exactly what you are saying. Zappa's band also had a lot of flexability and improvisation as well, it was just more well rehearsed if you know what I mean. They also improvised plenty live as things took odd twists and turns and they were forced to 'adapt'. I think zappa kept everyone on their toes, and they were strung along, he definitely had a TON of control over them leaving less room to write their own parts on the spot, but they still improvised in between songs etc.

John Zorn Is the God of Music.
End of the fucking question.
Such a colourful show.
To add to my previous weak comment, Zorn's instincts are spot-on here and I'm enjoying his acute direction of dynamics.

Magnificent. Pure jazz of this era. A friend, who's a drummer, convinced me to visit John Zorn a couple of times around 2010. At the North Sea Jazz Festival. Joey Barron was there as well, maybe it was the same tour. Now can Pharrell join John Zorn please, so we can define the state of the art of music? Thanks!
Thanks for putting this up its getting me a great mood love band inprov at its finast
thanks for this sound
Bass: sounds like someone walking through a swamp.
