- The steam age returned to Goole Docks on 15 March 2003, as Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway 0-4-0ST 'Pug' No.51218 masqueraded as scrapped classmate 51222 for a steam charter freight train.
This video shows movements at various locations around the docks. It includes an interview with one of the drivers who is also a member of the Trust which owns the Pug locomotive.
Please pass on this link to interested groups. Thanks.
The L&YR Class 21 is a class of small 0-4-0ST steam locomotive built by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway for shunting duties. They were nicknamed Pugs.
In total fifty seven were made between 1891 and 1910. They were built for use in sharply curved sidings for shunting duties. The Pugs were allocated by the L&YR for operation in the industrial areas and docks of Fleetwood, Goole, Liverpool and Salford. In later times they became more widely dispersed, reaching places such as Bristol, Bangor, Crewe, Derby, Widnes, York and Swansea. When the LMS was merged into British Railways on 1 January 1948, 23 'Pugs' remained in service. The last was withdrawn in 1964.
Two have survived to preservation, these are L&YR 68 (later LMS 11218 and BR 51218) and 1910-built L&YR 19 (LMS 11243). Both "Pugs" are now owned by The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Trust, a Registered Charity.
When I was watching this is thought of David Attenborough doing a commentary. "Here we see a rare Pug class 51222 in its natural habitat of the docks"
Great seeing a pug in its natural habitat!
There are many steam videos on RUclips and this must be one of the best. Well filmed with a good commentary. Spendid!
lovely little loco, I remember been on a caravan holiday and it rained nearly every day and my Dad bought me the Airfix kit of the "Pug" I don't suppose I did any of the assembly, because all the motion worked, and it went on our model railway when we got home. Great video

It's scary to think that this was 15 years ago
Surely everyone's favourite saddle tank if you're old enough to have bought the airfix nee kitmaster model for 19 p. Nicely filmed and wise words from robin
I remember visiting Goole docks in the sixties, everything was dusted with flour.
The best saddle tank engine ever in my opinion
I used to load steel off the dockside here. I remember when these docks had class 08 shunters knocking about
Lovely film, it was nice to see the Pug again in Haworth Yard during the recent KWVR Steam Gala, let's hope we don't have to wait too long to see it in steam once again.
bout 10 yrs to wait
Information from the L&Y Railway Trust - website lyrtrust.org.uk - who own both preserved Pugs. 19 had a trial steaming over 40 years ago which indicated serious problems, it is now well looked after as a static exhibit at Ribble Steam Railway in Preston. 68/51218 (disguised as 51222 here) needs a 10-year overhaul when other projects are completed. Unfortunately is it not always on public view on the Worth Valley.
Surprisingly nippy little thing. Looked bizarre going over the level crossing with the modern warning lights in action.
I didn't know any puggs survied, but that one looks like its well and truly alive!
Technically, this exact loco isnt. 51222 was scrapped, but thia is actually 51218 running as 51222
What a workhorse!
2:40 WHEELSLIP!
If L&YR 19 was in BR Black, Would it's number be 51243 ?
Wrong wheels on that Palvan. Need to swap them with the Medfit.
I think it is out of use at present. Thanks.
i loved that what a steam loco it is. is it still in steam.
no needs overhaul taking 10yrs
Lovely video:-)
