My Permobil M300 Wheelchair Hasn't Worked Right Since I Purchased It 2 Months Ago

  • The experience with my permobil M300 electric wheelchair has been in complete contrast compared to the loaner wheelchair I test drove for 2 months. I don't think the experience I've had is any thing near typical of permobil or the standards permobil typically achieves. This video is a combination of:
    - the problems I've experienced
    - the attempts to resolve these issues
    - the climax of where I initiated the electric wheelchair being returned under warranty
I will post an updated video when I receive my new electric wheelchair.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with your Permobil. I've had a C500 for 4 years without a single issue. Last week I got the F5 VS standing chair in the 7.5mph version. It's the best thing ever and gives me so much quality-of-life! I hope you'll get your issues sorted out!

I've glad others have not endured the same challenges as myself and the impact to their quality of life this has caused me.

Hello, Ron. I'm sorry to hear about the problems you've had with your Penmobil .
Concerning the wheel wobble issue, Penmobil is not the only maker of mobile AND
manual wheel chairs with rotating pilot wheels.
Whenever one of those wheels lose contact with the ground surface they tend to
arbitrarily wobble in an unpredictable manner; sometime spinning in circles. This is
caused by uneven weight distribution on the chassis or a misaligned fork on one side.
This also plays havoc with the bearing life of the wheel assembly.
The fix is relatively easy to accomplish during manufacture but for some reason or
another the engineers never implemented it. Maybe it costs a little more, who knows.
All that needs to be done to solve that problem is to install a compression spring
above the bearing with just enough compression to keep the wheel in contact with
    the ground surface.
As far as the wire issue is concerned they should have vibration resistant contacts
or stop nuts on their terminals to prevent separation. I think this issue just added to
your frustration of the product brand. I don't use a wheelchair but I do repair them
here at a facility primarily used by the elderly and handicapped people. I'm just old
with a limited income but still able to do a lot of things the other folks can't do.
I go to bed with pride...how's that for bragging.
In closing, the Penmobil is actually one of the better made brands overall, being
made and imported from Sweden. Choosing another brand might not be a good idea.
You just happened to get a rare case of lemonitis; too many defects.
Good luck to your future experiences, and God bless and keep you.

I've had a Permobil M300 HD for 21 months, yes there are issues, but it's never been an issue that can't be solved.
I live in Toronto Canada, it's not an unusual for me to go 17-20kms a day, I use public transit every day, this city is not overly wheelchair accessible.. Infact it's fairly inaccessible in comparison to the USA, we don't have national accessibility laws here.
I had a frame crack after 18 months & Permobil were awesome about it.
I have had caster flutter too, bigger casters can do this easier, also I have been through a lot of bearings.
I have had excellent service from my repair place & Permobil.
Overall it's been a great experience, in comparison to my former wheelchair, which spent more time in the repair place than under my butt & I killed it in less than 2 years, it was a quantum q6 edge.

During the coming week I will be making a final video about my experience with the "permobil M300" power wheelchair. I've returned it. I am glad you've had a much better experience than myself. I will never consider any permobil branded wheelchair for my future mobility needs. I can't risk a repeat of the 6 months I used it for.

Ron Piggott I'm sorry to hear that.
I think that it's more frustrating than ppl can understand, especially with the newest b.s of shoppers home health care, ditching their clients the way they did, especially those with CEP wheelchairs, I have full powered, seating, legs & all.
I think that you should check our wheelchairjunkie.com for a awesome resource..

Ron Piggott also one thing I loved is that m300 is mostly Allan key, seriously simple to repair/tweak stuff on your own.
I'm legally blind as well as the chair, so it makes life interesting.

Hey Ron , your post about being violently tossed around when your M300 Permobil chair was having issues in the front wheel area is EXACTLY the same problem that I have been having with my 2017 Permobil M300 H D Power Chair only my problems are way MORE often happening then yours were ... My chair is maybe 3 months old at the most and it was supplied to me by my V A Hospital due to several service connected disability Medical problems I have and had now for many years ... MY front wheel issues have plagued me for the whole three months now and rite NOW my chair is NOT functional & waiting for BOTH front wheel assemblies to be replaced for the 3rd time , one of the wheels was bent so badly the rubber wheel will NOT turn and roll at all ....... I am trying to buy a spare chair off of the internet so I am NOT stuck in ONE spot at home , not able to go ANYWHERE .... I think I will write the Company but with the V A in the picture as my provider I think it will be a futile effort ! ANY HELP or kind words for me buddie ?

I contacted the CEO of permobil directly. When I searched for it I found his e-mail address on the 'permobil' US web site. When I contacted the CEO directly they dealt directly with me and by passed the mobility store that sponsored my purchase. I had lost confidence in the mobility store. In my letter I provided a time line of events gone wrong and the unsuccessful attempts of the local mobility store to repair it. I provided approximate time line and distance drove. Then I asked for a return. Permobil initially offered me an exchange or return. But when they say I posted on social media about the issues I was having they would only offer me a refund. With how poorly my quality of life had become due to the wheelchair repeatedly malfunctioning I accepted the return. I will never deal with permobil again. It was truly horrible. I feel for you.

I thank you for your response as well as the info you sent to me and I will try to get some action but if they offer me a refund I will snatch it up VERY QUICKLY and like YOU never deal with a permobil chair again ! I can get a very nice chair for about half of that OVER PRICED hunk of JUNK I got from them ..... Thanks again bro' ... what did you end up with ?

I am now using a Sunrise Medical Xperience2 power wheelchair. I am exceptionally please. If you look this wheelchair is marketed for use outdoors. I do a lot of distance driving. This works well for me.
Take a strong hint from me. Only accept a wheelchair that has room for group 24 batteries. The distance potential the wheelchair can drive is so much better than ground 22nf. Mid wheel and rear wheel drive tend to have the most space for the batteries. Mid wheel does well to go tight around corners similar to zero turning radius lawn mowers.

Hi out there everybody I have my second m300 HD pair mobile power chair I was wondering if anybody else had an issue where the were one or both of the casters on the rear will turn sideways and not want to turn around the place that services my my pair my bill chair has replaced it multiple times and I've noticed now with the new chair with the new pair mobile HD m300 that it's starting to do the same thing with that wheel on the back rear right side is starting to turn sideways and not want to turn around right away now at this point it's still trying around if you back up and and go around and then the wheel rolls but after that if if it's turn sideways and you don't do that that action then it just drags along sideways and the rest of the wheels are all going the weather supposed to as well as a caster on the opposite side but that one caster will keep staying sideways as of yet I haven't been told by anybody why that is happening on my old chair which I had seven and a half years of service out of but that was one of the main problems we had with it working on that caster constantly and the we had some issues with the controller amount that moves moves it out of the way so that you can be secured or whatever I noticed that some of the time bus drivers would lean on it as a retiring tying the chair now so I would pull it around over to me to protect it and of course they were offended but I explained to them that leaning on it would loosen the bolt to make it come off the chair and that's something they had to do several times as soon as I realized that was part of the reason for the controller coming off on the old chair I constantly kept it over to over over to this around to the seat to protect it from being leaned on however it still kept coming loose whether they replace the controller arm or just the bolts themselves now one of the main issues we had other than that caster on the back the controller arm was the cover on the back of the chair that covered the lights and everything will keep coming loose that happened so many times the last time it came loose it broke all it pulled all of the wires for the lights off the wiring harness snapped the wires now the chairs still runs but I know longer have use of any of the wires in the back has anybody else had an issue with the cast returning sideways and not wanting to turn around with the control arm where the want work next to the one staying attached to the chair properly or that hatch cover the cover over the back coming loose and tearing the wires they didn't seem to be able to figure out why that cover was coming off and I told him it would happen when when the wheels turn because it seem like they were going to close to the cover and actually knocking pulling the cover out and up off of the back of where it was secured at the securement back there but nobody was ever able to fix it so anytime I would go anywhere I knew to watch around just in case the controller just in case the cover for the motor and stuff that the wiring harness was hooked into will come loose because sometimes I wouldn't hear it because I'm hearing impaired so I always make sure that I backtracked when I went back through the area to go back home and just to make sure in case nobody have been around to make sure that that if the cover had come off the back of the of the chair that I would have that I would see it so I can pick it up and take it home with me they were never seem to be able to fix the reason what why the hatch cover kept coming off though in the back has anybody else had any of those three issues with the pyramid field because other than that I love my pyramid Bill the old one and a new one and the old one was had a lot more stuff on it for what was paid for it and if those three if those three problems could have been repaired I would not have given up my seven and a half year old parent mobile my m300 HD for Love or money but that's the only reason why it was changed to a new one it's because the insurance got tired of paying for those three issues to be corrected however on the new chair I'm experiencing the same thing and the only reason the wiring harness hasn't pulled out of the back is because it's not attached to lights on the back on that back hatch cover but that cover keeps still keeps coming off every so often so I've got to the point to where I leave it all because it'll just end up on the ground somewhere and I'm worried that I may not see it and nobody will be around to tell me it's laying there please respond to penspik63@gmail.com if you are experienced any of the problems that I have and if they if that your service provided for your wheelchair has been able to to take care of those issues permanently otherwise I think it may be a design flaw in the m 300 and I hope we can find a way to solve them

One of the "life lessons" I've taken away from this is to have a trusting relationship with whoever you appoint to perform maintenance on your wheelchair.
I will post a concluding video about returning my permobil wheelchair in a few weeks. I will let you know when it is online.

There are no 'electric wheelchairs.' There are only power chairs. All chairs operate on dc. Sorry, Mr. Snufalupagous but there are no chairs out there that don't require regular tuning up.

I hope this all works out for you. I do have a question. I am going to be purchasing a chair soon. I am trying to decide between a front wheel drive or a mid wheel drive. Can you give me your perspective on purchasing a mid wheel drive and not a front-wheel-drive? Thank you!

+awbjr9871 Look for a Permobil F3 best chair ever!! Smooth ride, great power both inside and outside!!! So much better then mid wheel!

    • @trixiefizzy1

I agree on the F3. I've had pretty good luck with my 11 year old C300 which I used intermittently 50/50 with my Tilite manual chair. No major issues, other than showing battle scars, the periodic battery change and recent bearing overhaul and joystick replacement. Last week I took delivery of a 2017 F3, which I preferred over the mid-wheel drive M3. I am still keeping my C300 as a back-up...charging the battery every week or so.
My new F3 elevates 12" vs 8" on the C300...now I am in charge of putting the dishes away!
