They were indeed rockers. It's sad that most of the world ignored their first album and the singles from their second that arrived before "More Than Words". As for ballads, even if you dismiss "Hole Hearted", they just released "Other Side Of The Rainbow" a couple months ago. I don't know if you've missed out on their new material, but if so then Nuno's solo in "Rise" has gotten a lot of praise and might be a good place to start. :)
Rockers, no doubt, but there have been plenty of ballads on their albums. Perhaps they weren’t chosen for release as singles, but they are there and they are fantastic, just like the ripping rock songs.
Worked at a radio station at the time... and yeah, "i love you" are words. SHOW ME HOW YOU FEEL!! Really??? Teenie boppers?? Guys, I was in my early 30s.
I so love this duet!!!!! Extreme is a Metal band- and every band has their ballad. Another rocker power ballad- but full of soul- is “ To Be With You” by Mr Big- killer singing ! ❤❤❤❤
Hello my brothers... Next Friday Aug 25th I have tickets to see Extreme here in Reno Nevada..! And the opening band is Living Colour..!! Will be a great night for rocking.!!
Guys, thanks for your reactions, and bringing good energy. You should try the song "To Be With You," by Mr. Big. It has, a cappella like vocals (I don't know how else to describe it), with some instrumentation - it's sonically a better song, IMHO.
@This_is_it Knowing your reactions of Queen, you should know that 'Extreme' has close ties with 'Queen' and with Brian May (Queen electric guitarist, vocals, co-founder) The most powerful association is Extreme's participation in the 'Freddie Mercury Memorial Concert' (1992). Loving your reactions, thank you!!!
Singer Gary Cherone was the 3rd singer for Van Halen. He was hired by the band after Sammy Hagar quit. He lasted one album which didn't do much on the charts. Then David Lee & Sammy started touring with the band again.
Extreme is mainly a rock band. Nuno Bettencourt is one of the best guitarists of all time, typically covering a scorching mix of rhythm and lead in most of their songs. Gary Cherone is a phenomenal vocalist, as well. Crazy range and power. That’s why this video starts off with turning off the loud amps and the drummer getting off the kit. It was a nice way to highlight that this was an intimate acoustic ballad that didn’t do what so many ballads in that era did, which was start out soft then have the band come in loud and strong later in the song.
This was when MTV actually played music videos. This was when they introduced "Unpluged" accoustic videos ONLY and everyone had their unplugged videos.
From the early eighties into the nineties every rock band included a "power ballad" on an album. I've read that when Steve Perry joined Journey in the mid seventies he added that voice and songwriting to bring a softer side to the band. Originally they were a jam band that just played what they felt, Gregg Rolle and Neal Schon came out of Santana doing that, they realized there were more girls hanging out at the shows after Steve softened the music.
Lead vocals by Gary Cherone. Guitar 🎸and backing vocals by Nuno Bettencourt. Written by them. This can qualify for country music 🤠 as well as for pop. Definitely worth a cigarette lighter! The album cover shows Broadway Avenue near Columbus Street, North Beach, San Francisco, my hometown 🌉. Suggested video: Extreme performs Hole-Hearted.
Now you should react to the cover of this song by the actor, comedian and musician, Jack Black, on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. It's brilliant and funny. Jimmy Fallon & Jack Black Recreate "More Than Words" Music Video
Fantastic group and well-diverse. Music videos were a big thing back in the MTV days. The song is chopped-up a good bit and tho singles then released for radio and video consumption could not run greater than 4 minutes or so - unless of course your name was Michael Jackson lol
The dude on the right could make it big sell shampoo bottles for sure if he failed in music. I was 12/ 13 y/o at the time this song came out and was smitten by guys with long hair.. I remember it well. Very slick song and video. I feel very different now watching it back and hearing it again, way too slick for my taste today. But I also enjoy coffee and like the taste of olives now when I used to not.
As someone who was a 15 year old girl when this came out, I can tell you that Fenom was right. We did all love this song, even girls like me who weren't usually into slower songs. It was just pretty, and besides that, we all thought Nuno was hot. I can also tell you that this song was probably used more than any other by teenage boys to try to get their girlfriends to give in and have sex with them. "C'mon baby, more than words. Don't just say you love me." It seems like a romantic song right up until you realize that this was being attempted on not only you, but also all of your friends. 😁
I’m a straight white male, and I think Nuno was hot, especially in this video. Also, this song is deceptively sweet, but has that slightly sinister message like you pointed out. It’s that manipulation of “don’t just tell me, show me”. This was intentional. The album is basically a tour of vices and bad/sinful things like decadence, greed, political power, sex, manipulative romance, misogyny, etc., then ends with the song, Hole Hearted, which says “There’s a hole in my heart that can only be filled by you”. Gary’s faith is important to him, and that last song is summing up that all these other things that people pursue won’t ultimately satisfy (“this hole in my heart can’t be filled with the things I do”), but only God can fill that empty place. There are some religious themes on some of their other albums, as well.
Great song but the lyrics always make me laugh. It's basically them talking groupies into sleeping with them 😂 "hey, it's now or never. You say you're my biggest fan, but are you...?"
I read they HATED, this song! It's NOT their typical type of music, and didn't like that THIS, is their legacy. Not the harder sht they usually be pushin.
I love Extreme and can't stand this song lol. At the time, we were bombarded with sappy ballads, this one being better than most. But I agree... Listen to ANYTHING ELSE from this Album! Get the funk out!!
this song basically killed the band. real fans know that the band had a much harder sounding edge. so when new fans bought their albums, they were very disappointed that the album did have songs like this. tgey broke up after the follow up album also weird al did a parody of this video that his hilarious. called You Don't Love Me Anymore. y'all should watch that as well.
I hated this song too. Still do. Better representation of Extreme is Pornograffiti or Play With Me. Just a fun 80’s hair band that made a ballad that killed the band.

Man that song took over the world for like three months.
This is Extreme’s intro song to the world. It’s a beautiful ballad. It’s the only ballad they’ve ever released. They are rockers from the word go.

Nuno is a master level guitar player. He can shred like no one else.
Rockers, no doubt, but there have been plenty of ballads on their albums. Perhaps they weren’t chosen for release as singles, but they are there and they are fantastic, just like the ripping rock songs.
This is such an underrated group for sure! All of their music is fantastic!
Worked at a radio station at the time... and yeah, "i love you" are words. SHOW ME HOW YOU FEEL!!
Really??? Teenie boppers?? Guys, I was in my early 30s.
Such great guitar work in this setting the beat and finger picking (and harmonizing). Only 2 voices and one instrument. Real talent.
Nuno Bettencourt is one of the best guitarists to ever play. And he is very kind too. ☮️❤️
This song inspired many RnB artists to release tracks where there is tap and guitar strumming.
I so love this duet!!!!! Extreme is a Metal band- and every band has their ballad.
Another rocker power ballad- but full of soul- is “ To Be With You” by Mr Big- killer singing ! ❤❤❤❤
Eric Martin is one hella amazing vocalist! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Hello my brothers... Next Friday Aug 25th I have tickets to see Extreme here in Reno Nevada..! And the opening band is Living Colour..!! Will be a great night for rocking.!!
Dope
One òf the BEST written and acoustical songs EVER! This song is timeless! Almost Bee Gees level harmonies! ❤❤❤

This is one of my favorite songs from the 80’s!
I thought it was early 90s.
One of the sweetest love songs always a pleasure to hear
Nuno played guitar on Black Cat by Janet Jackson.

I just discovered what a phenomenal guitarist Nuno is. You need to check out some of his solos on the newer Extreme stuff. Amazing.
The first time I hooked up with my first real girlfriend had this sound in the background and became our song. Ah Memories of my youth
Jimmy Fallon and Jack Black did a solid cover with a little comedy. The video is almost exactly the same. Definitely worth a watch!
Ohhh yess, great one
omgoodness, Jimmy Fallon and Jack Black did this one on Jimmy's show, it's soo good and hilarious, please watch in your own free time . Woot Woot
Extreme released their newest album titled "Six" in June this year. Nuno is a beast on guitar and has recorded many songs with Rihanna. 💚🤙
Instantly transported back to high school. Not sure I should thank you or cuss you. Lol.
Extreme recently released a new album, within the past month.

This was when MTV actually played music videos. This was when they introduced "Unpluged" accoustic videos ONLY and everyone had their unplugged videos.

1991, This music video played during Saturday morning cartoons. That's how us Jr.High girls learned it. 😅

Another be7ballad off the same album is When I First Kissed You.
Lol I really thought this was gonna be the cover by Jimmy Kimmel and Jack black. You guys should check that out too.
Actually I think more guys were singing this song than girls, at least in my neighborhood🎶🎶🎶
The dude on the right could make it big sell shampoo bottles for sure if he failed in music. I was 12/ 13 y/o at the time this song came out and was smitten by guys with long hair..
