For me a gravel bike is about road rides with gravel sections, dirt roads, fire roads etc. And a gravel bike is certainly better for all that than a mountain bike. An mtb is better for single track, technical descents etc, yes, but for me that's a totally different type of riding. In other words, a gravel bike is a replacement for a touring bike or endurance road bike, not for an mtb.
Hey I just picked up a Canyon grail cf sl 8.0 for the exact purpose you stated first. But I will now definitely like to participate in events such as grinduro. What do you think? Will it hold up?
Can one sofa do it all, or should we have event specific seating? Do you eat sitting on the same chair you would tackle reading in? Do you have a winter chair, to keep your lightweight one safe for the summer months?
I would be interested seeing a monster gravel bike with a dropper post down that gnarly rocky descent. I wonder how much that would have helped. Great video! Very informative!
jr collin I see Pinarello, Trek, BH Cervelo framesets with 105 groups making me think they may be Chinese copies. 105 is a nice group set but I wouldn't put it on a $3,000 frame. No.
Call me a luddite but surely the best bike for this would be a hardtail with a double chainset? Suspension, large volume tyres, small gears for climbing, larger gears for speed, an optional dropper post for descending too. Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of 1x but once you're on paved roads or fire roads you're going to spin out.
Full specs on bikes? Or at least the weight, tire width, tire pressure, gearing...some of which you mentioned but would love to see a table. Would you add a dropper? What about a redshift stem? What tire width is your go to? 47mm - 1.9 in? Love to see some on screen text, and you mentioned the winner, perhaps adding that as an on screen addendum once you know. Enjoyed you take on your ride, keep up the good work (nice love seat by the way).
I absolute like the videos with you three guys. However, could please make a video addressing the opposite question " How much slower is a gravel bike with skinny tires compared to a designated road bike, e.g. a aero race whipped and a endurance bike". I probably not the only one who like to hear you guys rather honest opinion on this...
I always thought it was pronounced GRIND-uro, as in gravel grinder plus enduro. I guess grin-duro works too... all smiles! You guys should go to Quincy, CA for the original. I went to the community college there over 20 years ago and I love the area.
Enjoyed watching about the Grinduro on the Isle of Arran. Really appreciate this sort of content. You boys need to consider a roomier sitting arrangement however.
I’d say that the best bike would be the one suited to the type of gravel you ride. In South Texas, we have a mixture of crushed gravel, dirt, rocky gravel, washboard sections, a bit of everything. I’ve recently purchased a Giant TCX Advanced and it fits 43c Gravel King SK tubeless tires. I love this bike. It’s fast and it can accommodate these tires that have handled everything I’ve thrown at this bike. I had a alloy Niner RLT9 prior and this bike is much better feeling and handling.
What gearing was Joe running on the MTB? Looks like a small chainring (30/32) and big cassette 44+?? Did you use the lower gears? Seams like a fit rider like you could use a much bigger chainring (36) to get higher top speed. It seems everyone is running huge cassettes and small chainrings. Unnecessarily so i'd have thought.
That event seems amazing. I want to see more videos on the checkpoint ALR. I just ordered a 2019 tiagra Checkpoint ALR 4 but it'll take a while for the bike to arrive at the local shop.
I'd just come back from another trip the night before we left, so only had time to hastily fit the 40mm tyres I had in my workshop. If I had more time, I would likely have run the same 650b 47mm WTB Horizon tyres I ran last year.
I put bontrager 29-0's on my checkpoint SL 5 which measures to 29x1.9. Works perfectly in the kansas flinthills gravel. Wouldn't trade that bike for anything
Just crossed the Sprengisandur route in Iceland (on touring bikes). 26 inch wheels with 50mm tires were far superior compared to 28 inch wheels with 42mm (especially on the downhill sections), simply because higher volume allows you to hammer over rocks etc.
im running a trek procaliber 9.8 drop bar with xx1 eagle and a trek checkpoint fork on there to good effect. running fast trak/fast trak and its amazing.
This was an MTB course where gravel bikes could barely manage. I would never take a gravel bike for that kind of terrain. I use gravel bike with 42mm tire for forest roads, paved roads, little rocks and thats it. Technical descents over big roots on a gravel bike is like going to a strip bar but not touching the honeys: a total teaser
An XC bike would be better for gravel grinding with a larger chain ring in the front. Gravel bikes have plenty of pedal power on the top end long after an xc bike is spinning out.
These longer event themed videos are the best content you create 👍👍
Thanks!
My favorite BikeRadar videos are when these 3 go do stuff together.
Content like this is why I prefer BikeRadar over GCN
Louis Greenleaf Amen to that +1
Both.
Don’t we all
Bit cramped on that sofa lads
That's the way they like it
Auch so g...
When you're as good pals as us, the closer the better x

That sofa is way too small
Tomi Saaranen literally my only thought on this

A shimano 105 groupset? haven seen that in a while on a cycling channel
Glad to see a 105 really.
I'm a man of the people

That looks like a fun event! Count me in next year, and I will be on a gravel bike.
I have 105 on 2 bikes.

Not anymore. Have you not seen the latest 9-52 teeth cassettes for Sram eagle? They give you the same range as a 2 x 11.

84km , hardly worth getting out of bed for 😂
Great segment fellas 🍻🍻🍻

Live nearby Quincy and enjoy the trails several times a year.
They should do the triple crown, see how they fair across all 3 events.
Looks like a fantastic event...probably would need to upgrade bikes, though, 35mm is all I can squeeze into my old-school canti-brake CX-bike...
that's would be fine. i wouldn't want less but it's enough...
Pro Caliber hard Tail, Lauf fork & jones bars ticks all the boxes !! lol Fantastic ride.
This clip would win an award if the couch was 6 inches narrower. Heeheeeheee! Great job guys. Great, great content!

Great video. Gave good feel a proper Scottish Grinduro. Did the USA version last year. Yours look to be as painfully fun!

Needs more smaller couch and communal showering, don't listen to the haters we're here for that *steaming* hot content
Entered for 2019 and I will be doing it on a 26" fully rigged mtb, think that is the "best" grave bike
Sounds good, hopefully we'll see you there!
Jack feeling peaky hey? Don’t think we didn’t notice that pint on the ferry over...few too many?
Great (and detailed) video
been looking into doing a Grinduro (on a gravel bike) and ya'll beyond sold the fun of participating. Hope everyone is staying safe!
Great video. One of your best.
Important to be able to run 650b with MTB tyres over 40mm on my next gravel bike is my take away

Why did you only run 40c tires on the Checkpoint? You can officially run 45c, but there is room for more...
Jeff Low That's what I was wondering, too

Well done lads, keep this coming👊🏽

You must always use that sofa with the three of you. Nice job fellas!
Love this kind of content! Maybe the South Downs CX Century next year? 😁
im running a trek procaliber 9.8 drop bar with xx1 eagle and a trek checkpoint fork on there to good effect. running fast trak/fast trak and its amazing.
How many GB and Batteries do you need for GoPro Recordings like this in the Race?
Awesome video guys!
Have you done a review on the Trek Checkpoint?
That’s one heck of a drive!
2:14 I fall in love with that smile XD
So basically with all the problems it sounds like the 3rd time is the charm? Maybe go back with a gravel bike with 650B wheels around the 2.0 size.
How'd you like the Trek Checkpoint?
Anyone knows what handlebar bag was on that Open U.P.P.E.R. please?
Is this harder or less hard than an average CX race? I mean in terms of terrain and technical descents and stuff.
no
"Harder or less hard?"
- "No"
Thanks a lot, Sir.
Nah
Nope
the last timed segment is fairly technical singletrack through rooted forest. in the dry, not so tough. but in the wet...
This is punk rock. GCN never has this vibe.

throw drops on the epic... BOOM
Hardtail with drop bars would be perfect.
What handlebar bag was Ruben using?
It's a Yanco Customs bag.
BikeRadar thanks 😀
The Three Amigos ride again. Update; Briefly ride again. Update; Ride again, again.
An XC bike would be better for gravel grinding with a larger chain ring in the front. Gravel bikes have plenty of pedal power on the top end long after an xc bike is spinning out.
Yeah, that's the stuff. I love watching this type of balls out British looney-tunes stuff.Nutters' you lot, in'it ?
Cool. Keep'em coming 'ol beans.👍
Glad you enjoyed the video! Do you think you'd give Grinduro a try?
BikeRadar 'Nah ,I live down in Oz . Also, me bike would get dirty......... !!
So who used the juice?
Perhaps the best bike could be a hard tail with a drop bar? 🤔😊
Why are you guys all crammed onto a loveseat?! ;)
Mooorrrreeeeee!!!!!! 👍🙌
gravel bike all the way
dont really need suspension on gravel do ya
Reuben the sasquatch
That would be just the right distance for that terrain not to overdo it and have a good time.
Yes! It must be smaller...Maybe a really small bean bag chair..
I don't normally leave comments, however, y'all are killing the biking content on YT. Literally nobody comes close.
I think you need a larger couch.
Doing this next yr
Why would I suffer riding gravel bike when we have mountain bikes. I realy don't understand that
more efficient on long flat sections.
How do you get to the trail? Some of us ride there on the ....... road
.... there’s no cyclocross bike in this video.
The sofa lol :D
You guys really need a gimbal. The shaking is really difficult to look at.
Basically, MTBs are the best multi purpose bikes!
Don't you guys wear gloves?
sounds like someone has food intolerances
Can't drive??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Yawning
Hard to understand the accents and if the trail isn't in the US, then it's time to say goodbye..
Looks amazing and nice video
