Update worked great until I got to "ng update @angular/core" Then it crashed the update. Package "@angular/flex-layout" has an incompatible peer dependency to "rxjs" (requires "^5.5.0", would install "6.1.0"). Package "@angular/compiler-cli" has an incompatible peer dependency to "typescript" (requires ">=2.7.2 =5.0.0-rc.0 =4.4.4 =5.0.0-rc.0 =4.4.4
Shame "ng update" is broken (still can't update to 6.0.2 as of this morning). See github.com/angular/angular-cli/issues/10621 (I know it says "closed" but the problem still exists)

Solution was simple. This package had to be updated before core:
npm i --save @angular/flex-layout@6.0.0-beta.15
