      A very valid complaint. I'm currently taking five days off... and getting my full wage.

    This type of video is what helps bring the smile out of the most pessimistic people. What a humble life to live. I'd crowd fund two week's worth of profit for them to go a nice vacation, where some of the days you guys could film it, just to see more of this happiness

    • @roidroid
      @roidroid 8 лет назад +13

      there should be like... a small group which works for 2 weeks at each newsagent in the neighbourhood, each group that does this as their job would give 25x newsagents the ability to have 2 weeks off per year.
      They'd be very well experienced, working at so many newsagents, so they'd do their job well the owners would have nothing to worry about.
      (This service should probably exist for every industry. It could cut down on unemployment. Wait... i think i just re-invented the "temp agency")

    • @fmlAllthetime
      @fmlAllthetime 8 лет назад +2

      Tom J. Byrne ... he says exactly what I respond to him with in his comment. It was kind of a joke. The fact that you didn't catch that after responding to him and myself makes me depressed.

    I would love to see even more of these types of videos. It brought a smile to my face to see such hard working people enjoying their job, getting by. I could somewhat relate to the guy when it came to keeping the store in check... I work part time at a convenience store and there are some bad days, but the good days are when the customers are friendly. Even having a short, pleasant chat, or a customer saying hello and thank you can make a worker's day. Thanks again, SOL.

    Does anyone else want to start a kickstarter to raise this wonderful man the money for a 1 week vacation? Shouldn't be very much, and would be totally worth it and deserving.

    • @brod2man
      @brod2man 8 лет назад +5

      +TheWeeCrafter I guess the problem is more that you can't really stop a newsagent. It's THE NEWS, it never stops. The shop would still need to stay open to keep the customers coming. I guess a lot of them are regulars, so it's a risk to close. Maybe he's just unwilling to have someone look after the shop for him.

    • @svanderheijden7967
      @svanderheijden7967 8 лет назад +2

      +TheWeeCrafter I doubt he can't go on holiday for financial reasons. I'd think he can't close the shop because costumers depend on his service.

    well this cheered me up and I wasn't even having a bad day.
    my exploration into the pleasures and sorrows of work is really emphasising that regardless of my job, I choose whether I take satisfaction in the tasks I carry out.
    one person would question the importance of a corner shop selling paper and sugary snacks but as demonstrated the conversations and relatively stress free nature of the business must have such a positive impact on his mental wellbeing on a daily basis.
    simple yet effective video.

    Seems like an adorable man, but I can help but think of what a horrible job this is. No chance for self development or gaining new knowledge or improving others e.c.t Just a daily grind.

    • @xplosiv026

      +Mongol JJ That's all that some people want.

    • @yidazhou
      @yidazhou 8 лет назад +30

      Well, self development may occur at night, or even working on yourself during the day with interactions with customers, and gaining new knowledge can be taken through reading and similarly, interacting with customers. But I have to agree, it's not as quick as just having new interactions, and new experiences. It's a real shame :(

    • @a.7801
      @a.7801 8 лет назад +6

      +Mongol JJ I mean he interacts with other people. Some even come in just for a chat. Surely that is more then just a daily grind ?

    • @ceekay9253
      @ceekay9253 8 лет назад +2

      +Mongol JJ in between serving customers, you could always read the newspaper, a book, surf the web, etc. So many opportunities to learn and gain new knowledge. There are always opportunities, you just got to find them.

    • @lepistanuda
      @lepistanuda 8 лет назад +8

      +Mongol JJ I would say that his work is highly meaningful - just because he isn't delving into the lofty realms of intellect or discussing huge sociological questions of the modern day doesn't mean he isn't making a fantastic and fundamental impact on society. Newsagents in general are a huge staple of many peoples livelihood - where would people get there milk if the grocery or supermarket had ran out or closed? Can you imagine how many people have gone into newsagents stressed or down to get a packet of cigs, just for the day to be lightened by a short sweet conversation with another human, just as small and vulnerable as they are. Montaigne can be looked to in evaluating this: "The most certain sign of wisdom is cheerfulness." and "“The most fruitful and natural exercise for our minds is, in my opinion, conversation.”

    • @JonnaBearNI
      @JonnaBearNI 8 лет назад

      That's true, to answer your question I guess I admire this man's cheerfulness in his work and the way that he carries himself reminds me of past friends.
      Its true there are many other newsagents who are probably just as nice if not more cheerful, I just haven't had the chance to observe the many other newsagents across our world.
      The fact that the School of life created a video about a day in this mans life would suggest they are in contact with him and have the means and reach to start a crowd funder. (Which they probably won't because it might go against the intended lessons of this series.) that's why if for any reason they did, I would happily put some of my money towards it.

    • @JonnaBearNI
      @JonnaBearNI 8 лет назад

      +JE Hoyes Your right, but I don't think I or the man in this video implied that he needs a holiday. He said it like it would be a nice idea to have a week off, I am saying if an oppertunity arose in which I could help make that happen would also be nice.

    This was a delight! I live in sussex where unfortunately xenophobia is running rampant so to see people of different races & religions to interact so intimately is rather uplifting.

    I tell you what would be interesting to read in the comments of another video in the series A Working Day - Toilet cleaner (location) (parts of the day censored for sensitive stomachs lol) that was part of my first job believe it or not, I have come along way since then, but I will never forget some of the sights and smells that I used to see, over many different cubicles (not just one or two) at the time I did it, because I really needed a Job but now that I look back on it, its sort of degrading, but If I ever had to go back to something like that, compared to the money I earn now, id be devastated... I don't think cleaners are appreciated enough, and unfortunately some people look down on them, but if it wasn't for them your environment would not be hygienic or very pleasant, Its not nice to say that was your first job ever, lol but least I can say I started from the bottom so to speak, and where ever I end up in life, I can say that's what I started out doing.

    The irony, I'm from Birmingham. No place I'd rather be. The diversity of races, religions, cultures, etc. in this city is just extremely pleasing; although it get it's a lot of abhorrence by the media, it's a great city.
