So proud of the work my mum and dad do, keep it up
Yep :)
Great ! be like them ! ok .best of luck.
Amazing... Not a single word of complaint. What a guy. Really puts many of us to shame. Thanks School of Life.
+Danielle Mac How about complaining about only two holidays?
Anyhow. Seems like a cool guy.
+Danielle Mac He complained that young people are reading news online and elders are dying, he also complained about not getting enough holidays.
A very valid complaint. I'm currently taking five days off... and getting my full wage.
This type of video is what helps bring the smile out of the most pessimistic people. What a humble life to live. I'd crowd fund two week's worth of profit for them to go a nice vacation, where some of the days you guys could film it, just to see more of this happiness
there should be like... a small group which works for 2 weeks at each newsagent in the neighbourhood, each group that does this as their job would give 25x newsagents the ability to have 2 weeks off per year.
They'd be very well experienced, working at so many newsagents, so they'd do their job well the owners would have nothing to worry about.
(This service should probably exist for every industry. It could cut down on unemployment. Wait... i think i just re-invented the "temp agency")
Lol @roidroid... yes you did just reinvent the temp agency.
Tom J. Byrne ... he says exactly what I respond to him with in his comment. It was kind of a joke. The fact that you didn't catch that after responding to him and myself makes me depressed.
+The School of Life could we not make this happen? a crowd funding campaign I mean
Someone please make this happen!
I would love to see even more of these types of videos. It brought a smile to my face to see such hard working people enjoying their job, getting by. I could somewhat relate to the guy when it came to keeping the store in check... I work part time at a convenience store and there are some bad days, but the good days are when the customers are friendly. Even having a short, pleasant chat, or a customer saying hello and thank you can make a worker's day. Thanks again, SOL.
+The School of Life awesome video, kinda reminds me of the studs terkel interviews of old
+The School of Life I adore these videos! :)Hope you know you're helping a lot of people with your videos. I love seeing/applying the philosophy taught in the older videos to these ones. Keep up the great work School of life! Best channel I've subscribed to in a while.
And people say that immigrants don't contribute to the British way of life.... This is a perfect example of Britishness. Politeness, helpfulness, willingness to work hard to preserve tradition and earn money. I love this series, keep it up
Does anyone else want to start a kickstarter to raise this wonderful man the money for a 1 week vacation? Shouldn't be very much, and would be totally worth it and deserving.
+TheWeeCrafter I guess the problem is more that you can't really stop a newsagent. It's THE NEWS, it never stops. The shop would still need to stay open to keep the customers coming. I guess a lot of them are regulars, so it's a risk to close. Maybe he's just unwilling to have someone look after the shop for him.
+TheWeeCrafter I doubt he can't go on holiday for financial reasons. I'd think he can't close the shop because costumers depend on his service.
Do it
haha, he's Wallace (from Wallace and Grommet) with a beard! So adorbs
I want to be this mans friend, he seems so great.
I love this.
And the gentleman's accent!!! Soft
Husang thats not an Irish accent it's an English accent
He's done more good than he probably knows. What a nice guy.
Yeah baby, I could watch these inner-life stories all day.
I love watching the beginnings of movies where it just shows a regular person doing their daily crap. Then some big event happens like a tornado strikes or something and it's just like AH COMEEE ON, THAT WAS THE BEST PART
I love that they make the elders feel special, important work!
These are the kinds of videos that make peole smile. Great work guys!
well this cheered me up and I wasn't even having a bad day.
my exploration into the pleasures and sorrows of work is really emphasising that regardless of my job, I choose whether I take satisfaction in the tasks I carry out.
one person would question the importance of a corner shop selling paper and sugary snacks but as demonstrated the conversations and relatively stress free nature of the business must have such a positive impact on his mental wellbeing on a daily basis.
simple yet effective video.
+Ru Kercy I'm a big fan and you can search online their own site for more videos and resources.
did... did we just witness a modern miracle?
+Ru Kercy Wow indeed, his comment was posted a month ago!
I really enjoyed this! I own a business that is open 7 days a week too, so I know exactly how this man feels.
+Angie D Angie, I'm curious to know what the D stands for after your name? Is it what I think it is?... lol
It's my surname. What did you think?
Angie D Oh never mind... lol. D stands for something else these days :P
+VeggiePandya What did you think it meant?
Josh Bobst D... Don't worry.
I think it's the sweetest video I've ever watched in the early year of 2016. The humbleness, the smiles, the laughs, the happiness made my day. God bless you, man!
These videos are amazing. PLEEEASE make a LOT more of them. I can't really pinpoint why, but i feel like these videos are the most healing things i've seen in a long time.
Seems like an adorable man, but I can help but think of what a horrible job this is. No chance for self development or gaining new knowledge or improving others e.c.t Just a daily grind.
+Mongol JJ That's all that some people want.
Well, self development may occur at night, or even working on yourself during the day with interactions with customers, and gaining new knowledge can be taken through reading and similarly, interacting with customers. But I have to agree, it's not as quick as just having new interactions, and new experiences. It's a real shame :(
+Mongol JJ I mean he interacts with other people. Some even come in just for a chat. Surely that is more then just a daily grind ?
+Mongol JJ in between serving customers, you could always read the newspaper, a book, surf the web, etc. So many opportunities to learn and gain new knowledge. There are always opportunities, you just got to find them.
+Mongol JJ I would say that his work is highly meaningful - just because he isn't delving into the lofty realms of intellect or discussing huge sociological questions of the modern day doesn't mean he isn't making a fantastic and fundamental impact on society. Newsagents in general are a huge staple of many peoples livelihood - where would people get there milk if the grocery or supermarket had ran out or closed? Can you imagine how many people have gone into newsagents stressed or down to get a packet of cigs, just for the day to be lightened by a short sweet conversation with another human, just as small and vulnerable as they are. Montaigne can be looked to in evaluating this: "The most certain sign of wisdom is cheerfulness." and "“The most fruitful and natural exercise for our minds is, in my opinion, conversation.”
I walk by this shop every time I am shopping that end of Birmingham. Thank you for making this video. These kinds of video are really important and it has given me an even bigger respect for this channel. Inspiring, creative and human.
I'm from Buurminnam
No
i love this new series, please keep it up guys!
SoL 2016
"overall it's okay, I wouldn't knock it too much"
so simple yet it made me rethink my life a little
I have no idea where the UK would be as a society without Sikh shopkeepers. You can be high, lost or scared but if you see a chap in a turban restocking creme eggs or shaking out his front mat you know all is right with the world.
Thankyou "The School of Life". Such kind of videos about real life people and their day-to-day happenings are very interesting. Helps to open up our minds. Keep on doing this great work !
School of Life! I love you guys. Keep this format up. It is interesting to know what these people's jobs are like. Without commentation, just them talking about the good and bad sides of it.
I think this man is such a role model. He won't get that much money, but he still loves his job and helps the community. Well done that man.
One day off? Wow, that's dedication. Much respect...
Wonderful. More videos like this please. ^_^
How wonderful... It's such a simple video, but his humility is so appealing, and really quite beautiful.
This was so great! Really glad you are going to make this into a series.
Such a beautifully made video, loved it :)
I love the interaction they're able to have with the community, and the incredible closeness between them and that lovely old lady! Very touching
He is SO sweet! This is a great video.
This was good to see. Often times u go in and out of a shop like that without a thought of the cashier or the business owner, their story, struggles, thoughts, etc. However, your fleeting moment can be someone's whole life. It's nice to see the other person's perspective.
Mad respect for these guys. I left Edinburgh in 2009 and I've been in the States since then. When I went back to Scotland for a visit I was so happy to see my local corner shop owner was still the same guy and his newsagent hadn't changed at all.
+17darsh I bet you love your new life now with more rights and freedom, and nice weather and that must have been amazing to see the same guy after all those years later.
I love that you are showing the lives of the blue collar men and the ones that society depends on sometimes the most. It really makes me happy.
I really appreciate this guy's humility.
Love this serious. Goes to show that a happy life is less about the status of what you do, but whether you can meet your needs and fill your life with the basic things&experiences that are meaningful to you.
Aww another touching story. It's so true small businesses never get time off.
Where is the "Only 17 children allowed in the shop at any one time" sign.
Bless this guy and his wife, only two days off a year. Maybe he could employ someone to run the shop for a few days.
Thank you for such an honest channel, such a distinctive pure life video,I love this, you guys make this world a better place, respect and gratitude
I don't know why but this is beautiful.
Beautiful story ! I'd definitely like to watch more !
This series is amazing!
Great video. Just finished working in a news agents so it great to see someone else on the other side of the worlds take on it.
Life is what you make of it. Thank you for this!
An Amazing series. Keep uploading please.
such a kind guy. i'm amazed.
Love this series. Thank you :)
I'm really enjoying these videos! would not mind at all to see more of these. Great job!
I used to do a paper round for this shop when I was younger, kindest couple in the world!
Private Eye on the counter! What a brilliant newsagents!
What a legend. 2 days off in a year and still not complaining. Thanks for the video!
Cant believe, You have filmed a Sardar Ji, an Indian.. So good of you..TSOL.
+Pratap Singham lol
+One Punch Muslim I'm sorry your name😅😅😅😅(I'm muslim btw) also watch anime
+One Punch Muslim I'm sorry your name😅😅😅😅(I'm muslim btw) also watch anime
Nas Tv kewl
excellent video. I love hearing stories like this. you made my day! !
I just want to have a nice chat with this man. Seems like a kind soul.
This was great. Such a nice humble man.
It's nice to see what real people get to do. It always gets overlooked
I loved the contrast between the Newsagent owner and Neurosurgeon. You can see that both of their jobs, despite being seemingly worlds apart, brings satisfaction and happiness into their lives. It really puts societal status and prestige into perspective, and emphasizes that happiness comes from an attitude. More videos like this please.
that's dedication. I imagined seeing someone about to complain, but he seemed pleased. it's not a fortune 500 company he owns but it's his and he's providing a service that he his community could use and appreciate. I can see where that would make anyone pleased. I liked this one a lot.
Thank you SOL, I love these videos. please keep doing them
Hahaha the old lady who always comes for a chat, who threat them like her kids, even using commanding tones ! lol .. I love this so much ! So sweet
Thanks school of life !
What a good man.
Omg i'm loving these little videos, keep em coming xD
Love this series!
This was a truly wonderful video. It would be great if you could possibly do more like these. Short, simple, honest and humble documentaries about the _little_ people in life.
I would gladly take part in a crowd fund for this delightful persons well deserved holiday. :)
That's true, to answer your question I guess I admire this man's cheerfulness in his work and the way that he carries himself reminds me of past friends.
Its true there are many other newsagents who are probably just as nice if not more cheerful, I just haven't had the chance to observe the many other newsagents across our world.
The fact that the School of life created a video about a day in this mans life would suggest they are in contact with him and have the means and reach to start a crowd funder. (Which they probably won't because it might go against the intended lessons of this series.) that's why if for any reason they did, I would happily put some of my money towards it.
+JE Hoyes Your right, but I don't think I or the man in this video implied that he needs a holiday. He said it like it would be a nice idea to have a week off, I am saying if an oppertunity arose in which I could help make that happen would also be nice.
What a lovely smile at the end. awww.
Great video concept. I like the originality of the ordinary. If more videos like this could be uploaded it'd keep me feeling more happy as a viewer. Thank you.
This man is LOVELY.
I could not wake up at 5 am 363 days of the year
This video put a smile on my face for some reason
This made my heart flutter. Kudos, I look forward to more of this series
:)
Work ethic is amazing 2 days off in a whole year
what a lovely guy, bless him!
This video kinda makes me see this people for real and say hello to them with honest smile on my face.
I think it would be no exaggeration to say that they are very important to that old lady.
There are many lonely people around us, for whom our genuinely sympathetic and interested listening, with some simple human warmth - would be life savers.
aha wow, I go in this shop more or less every week. Moseley Village Birmingham :) Thanks for sharing :)
2 days off ...how how ..they are amazing
Great series!
that's a beautiful man, who seems optimistic and make you happy.
I know it has become quite a clićhe saying this, but this video really made my day. Thanks TSoL
Wow, this man is just wonderful. I'm amazed by this guy. Even after he says one week off would be perfect for him, he says it's not too bad. You don't get to see this kind of behavior too often these days, do you?
I love your channel and the efforts you put into your videos, and I especially love this series.
keep up the good work!
I appreciaite this
Nice one Singh, will have to pop in and say hello one of the days
Thank you so much for posting this. It's really warming to see that the internet appreciates the lives of unassuming people who have found happiness in different ways. :)
This makes me so happy
Admirable and adorable is what comes to mind after watching this.
Please make more of such videos...
this was interesting I liked it
This was a delight! I live in sussex where unfortunately xenophobia is running rampant so to see people of different races & religions to interact so intimately is rather uplifting.
I tell you what would be interesting to read in the comments of another video in the series A Working Day - Toilet cleaner (location) (parts of the day censored for sensitive stomachs lol) that was part of my first job believe it or not, I have come along way since then, but I will never forget some of the sights and smells that I used to see, over many different cubicles (not just one or two) at the time I did it, because I really needed a Job but now that I look back on it, its sort of degrading, but If I ever had to go back to something like that, compared to the money I earn now, id be devastated... I don't think cleaners are appreciated enough, and unfortunately some people look down on them, but if it wasn't for them your environment would not be hygienic or very pleasant, Its not nice to say that was your first job ever, lol but least I can say I started from the bottom so to speak, and where ever I end up in life, I can say that's what I started out doing.
Amazing person!
The irony, I'm from Birmingham. No place I'd rather be. The diversity of races, religions, cultures, etc. in this city is just extremely pleasing; although it get it's a lot of abhorrence by the media, it's a great city.
what a lovely chap
Truly beautiful.
I would love to see this filmed in the middle of winter, when at 5:30 its still 2 hours till sunlight.
More of this!
The most chill dood in the UK.
