You can't take the t value of a set without first reexpressing it as a Hansen-Brögel subset and verifying it is σ-complete. Though in this case I suppose it works out fine.

When proving that the unit ball is closed, how do you conclude that |x_j|

      Its the reverse triangle. |x_i^n-x_i|\leq \sup_i |x_i^n-x_i| = \|x-x^n\|< \epsilon

Can we also say (using similar proof) that the closed ball is not totally bounded ?

Is it worth pursuing phD in Math, if someone is not exceptionally talented?

Yes. Just don't waste energy on worrying about what you can't do and use that same energy and time on asking questions whenever you get stuck.
The more you ask, the more areas on your "map" become available.
If you've never learned something to a very high level this might seem daunting because you have no personal guarantee that you'll ever get to the other side. But as long as you keep going you definitely will.
And once you finish your PhD you can switch to anything you want, because the skills that you've learned enable you to learn _anything_ exponentially faster than you would normally.

Pursuing a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics is the best. You will learn how to apply after then you can find pure mathematics worth learning.
