John started as a teacher at my school when I was around 12 years old. I remember very clearly and the lovely man that few understood. Times and attitudes have thankfully changed since those times. I had started to learn trombone, but very quickly I was moved to Euphonium "the cello of the band" as John called it. The time that followed was a musical journey that inspired me for life. I remember he turned up one day with "The Wedding ". It was up in the clouds but he encouraged me to have a go. Notes I didn't know we're possible, but he persevered. He organised musical evenings (full band and choir + whichever staff members he could get to do a turn) John himself was a fine singer, but without fail he got phlaryngitis on the day and sadly could not perform. Memories of a great musician and teacher.
