Lady with the parachute harness on. Those metal riser attachments were called Double Shot Capewells. Called that because if you had to release one, you had to squeeze both levers together then out & down then go in for the next set & parachute releases. Sometimes one would release before the other causing a one-sided streamer. No problem, right? Just release the other! Wrong! The one-side released caused a sideways fall whereby that caused a "lock-out" in the one you're trying to release while falling streamered at an angle. You could "release it" successfully but it would lock itself in the attachment becase of the angle! Next upgrde was called Shot & a Half which were faster & less susceptible fo getting fouled up or locked out.... I began skydiving in '64.
My fist rig shot and half that was modified to ''soft' cape wells. I noticed the last 2 jumps in his log book where on a PC. I jumped a Para-Commander for about 100 jumps until I bought a ''square'' canopy.
@tonyc223 An old timer Tony! You ever jump at Leon Rìche's Southern Parachute Center in Hammond, Louisiana? I rode a bus 10 hours from north Mississippi. I was 17. Got my C-4741 there on a 5 TU. My "Instructor" told me a 7 TU was "too much for me!" Hilarious! I missed the part about 2 PC jumps somehow. You saw Dan holding that all white reserve 24 footer in pristine condition. Did you think it was a 24' footer too? Has me thinkin' ol' Banjo man might be pulling one over on his watchers out here. Ha! Ha! Don't think too much of ol' D.B.'s equipment choices. Ha! Guess the FBI wanted his to break a leg - easied to catch! Take care buddy! I'm 75 now! Shit!

@evanreasor3833 why would there be police vehicles in Portland.?.when they took off their was no indication that there was a hijacking going on..landed in Seattle..everyone knows the plane left Portland
Wow! You found the canopy too? Was it a 28ft round canopy? This is case closed, without a doubt. I agree with your assessment on the chutes also. The FBI did try and procure chutes from multiple sources just in case. (Norman Hayden and Earl Cossey). I agree it was Cossey's chute that was used by Cooper and you found it!
I am interested in reading the FBI report after looking at this new material. Karen McCoy filed a lawsuit after the 1991 book came out. Karen accepted settlements in 1994. The two authors' settlements are confidential. This is from McCoy's Wikipedia.
😮Canopy was an unmodified (not steerable) 24 footer. Normal at that era was 28'. The 24 would slam you into the ground! '24 was used only as a reserve 'chute. I had a malfunction one day, cutaway with double shots (ses below), the '24 opened okay but I slammed into a concrete runway at Eustis, Virginia. Saw stars! I was 175. My point was if D.B. used a 24' canopy he's lucky as hell he didn't break his leg, arm, neck or kill himself at night over wooded terrain! One tough dude!
Sounds like you're suggesting that McCoy wasn't the Northwest hi-jacker. I have doubts as well. Why would he carry his parachute away from wherever happenstance landed him? Wouldn't you just leave it there, maybe bury it or cover it up? That is even if he survived the jump, which seems doubtful, given the circumstances at the time.
@@RambleOn. Did he use a 24 foot unmodified chute? If so, he was a passenger & not in control, especially in D.B.'s situation. Even if it was modified (usually Derry slots) that give minimal control) you're still a passenger with minimal forwarx speed of about 1 mph & very slow turn ability.
@billcallahan9303 there’s no need for forward speed or steering on a night jump. Steer into what? You get lowered vertically where forward speed is a disadvantage. Time to PLF.
All the evidence fits together logically, logistically and provides a plot line that storyboards for a great & tragic docu-drama. When this is finally overwritten on the backstory of his military exploits and the nation's treatment of returning Vietnam veterans, DB Cooper may prove to be a very sympathetic character. More than just a mysterious piece of latter-day folklore. 😢
I had an email discussion with a guy who had a audiocast (podcast) on DB Cooper. I had written him saying you had solved the case. At the time he disagreed and was adamant that the case was not solved. I think it must have been the Vortex guy you interviewed.
So many errors in the description of the rig over the years.what you have there is a 24 foot nylon twill canopy(whats left of it)..the container is a sage green nb8(NAVY issue) that has been extended to fit a larger canopy..the harness is a sage green b12 (AIR FORCE issue) that has been modified for sport use by installing "D" rings on the main lift web to attach a chest reserve..FACTS MATTER!!!
More Intel for you, Dan >>> The Boeing 727-051 used by Northwest (and Cooper) was sold to Piedmont Air in 1978, and re-registered as N383N. and borne the name "Mt. Mitchell Pacemaker". All of us who flew the 727 N383N airplane Flight Attendants and Pilots, all knew the history of that aircraft.
@@ProbableCause-DanGryder The 727 was sold again to Key Airlines in 1984, and was later stored at Greenwood-Leflore Airport in Mississippi. It was scrapped in 1996.
You are now famous Dan! I just heard, on a major radio station in NYC regarding you, Dan Gryder, in solving this mystery. WABC radio gave you credit and that is amazing that this is breaking news in NYC. Great job and happy to see that you are getting recognition for your hard work.
Great work! I think the US Attorney back then thought Mc Coy was probably Cooper, but they did not have enough evidence to get an indictment or to trial on the 1st jump. The standard in a criminal case very high....."beyond a reasonable doubt". US Attorneys like slam bang, foolproof cases. They figured they had McCoy on the 2nd jump, so they had their man, got their conviction, and that was enough. I think the Govt knew he was DB Cooper, but would not say so publicly......until now!
@fp4: Your take makes sense. Have read Fed trials a 95% conviction rate - most take "plead deal"s" to shorter sentences b/c if you don't you go away for 3-4 times the, "deal" offered. Not to mention any wealth you might have - if you even do - to attorney fees. Thankful say not firsthand knowledge but familiar w/ actual cases.
Bc they don't charge until there's irrefutable proof & have flipped a few ppl... otherwise they'll just keep working it up for yrs/decades rio they have the proof they need. There's no hurry- but the weight of having govt indictment hanging over your head means ur fuhked... that's the point. So conviction rate is high bc ONLY bring charges when already solved.
I applaud you for your efforts in conducting and documenting your research but the condescending manner you conduct yourself with this weird gotcha style attitude with only one-sided conversations is frankly unsettling. The first day I learned of DBC I figured it had to have been McCoy but as I peeled back the layers I found it highly unlikely he could be the guy. He was 15+ years younger than the consensus witness description, he spoke with an accent, wasn't a smoker, had his photos shown to all eye witnesses of Cooper and all thought he wasn't a good fit. Even the similarities between the hijackings started to not make sense after a while; Cooper is calm cool and collected, doesn't give specific flight directions, doesn't bring his own chute and picks a terminating flight. Meanwhile McCoy was nervous, spoke with an accent, gave detailed directions, didn't pick a terminating flight (thereby making the transfer of passengers and money harder), and was acting so weird the passengers testified they knew something was up before the hijacking even began. I would absolutely love to see the FBI get a DNA match and conclusively say McCoy was Cooper just for closure but I would venture to guess it's highly unlikely
@@BrockettRocket01 do you have an accent? I have yet to hear an Utah Mormon that would any marked accent, as say a person from Boston or the South would.
Watching this again, noticed the Cossey jumpsuit. That's awesome! Is that the one he wore on In Search Of? Did you buy it from a Cossey relative? I bet he had all kinds of neat parachuting gear. The things we leave behing. RIP Coss
Good job Dan. I live directly under the DN Cooper flight path and the FBI did check all our properties and barns. The old timers recall the roar of a jet liner flying very low but with high throttle. They said it was deafening. I understand that the pilots were instructed to increase throttle to keep it airborne at a low speed and elevation. Goheem airfield is very close to my farm. I have always thought that he landed in Lake Merwin ,but now I feel he landed safely and somehow got out alive. I believe he lost the bag of money during the jump as there is no way he would have tossed money to throw the Feds off as the likelihood of it ever being found was so remote. That's why he likely didn't again.
I watch these videos a couple of times to make sure I catch the details. Then I’ll play them as I fall asleep for about a week to get DG some well earned views. He puts a ton of work into these videos. He has solved the case.
Very interesting! Too bad no unique ID# on the chute. It would be helpful to look for signatures on the chute from the aircraft (e.g. carpet fibers) or DNA from those who handled the chute that night other than the hijacker.
Thank you for your time and effort for this, I’ve watched your videos these last few days and I agree with your in depth investigation and conclusion. Sketches are never perfect, but it pretty much looks like the guy. And the second hijack he corrected his mistakes. The only thing that gets me is why the feds did not insist that he was Cooper and close the case.
You did a great job telling the story... but I don't think you needed to rub in the fact that you had scooped the guy who had been researching D.B. Cooper. There's nothing wrong with being gracious to people who helped you reach the conclusions around Richard McCoy.
He told me that he was the guy, all knowing in the citizens world. If he is the best they got, they really have no clue about what is actually going on.
I hope they are not about to charge somebody with any evidentiary charges. It would be a terrible break for somebody who's worked so hard figure it all out. Dan Gryder is the key that picked the lock.
Us government did payout $3.5 million for unlaw deaths by fbi sniper..at RubyRidge who kept his career and over seen by none other wm.Barr yep..Trumps A.G. corrupt!
Not too sure he would have jumped in Nam. The Airborne was Air Assault, going in by Huey, dropping down with ropes. Special Forces may have done actual parachute covert missions, I don't know. Seems there is quite a stir about this on another channel by Ryan Burns. Apparently he is still unconvinced and argues that Dan did not have the Cooper jump rig. My thought is the D rings found on the Cooper rig may have been added after the Seattle jump and before he did the United hijacking. In any case, I am open to all arguments. We'll let Dan and Ryan scrap it up. Should be a good fight!
The buttoned up news anchors may be fading away to this new, independent form of spreading info. Looks like this story has one and the same producer, videographer, writer, gaffer, presenter, interviewer, etc.
This DB Cooper rig was typical of student gear of 1960's and 1970's for static line and freefall use which I think Earl Cossey would probably grabbed off the shelf. I am surprised that Richard McCoy didn't choose to empty the reserve to use as a container for a good part of the money, most experienced jumpers would have, he was after all going for broke. And all those WWII airmen bailed out without a reserve. Fortunately Earl recorded the specifics of the canopy and container, we called them B4 containers, I think the center panel data stamp also had a serial number. I wonder if serial numbers were recorded. Great video, you broke the heart of that expert on DB Cooper. D-1445
I think serial numbers were recorded, since they were able to match the small amount of money found in the river to the cache. Had he saved the money, they likely would of caught him by tracing the bills.
“Nobody’s in trouble or anything.” More than one innocent soul is sitting in prison after hearing that from the FBI.
I was convinced after Part 1, locating the rig he jumped was the icing on the cake, well done Dan.

@@cityslick007my questions exactly, not convinced yet.
@@cityslick007watch Dan recreate the jump- he landed over the River/city & used city lights as a guide.
Heard you today on KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM Seattle the Jake & Spike show. Fascinating!
Great comment...especially the part about returning Vietnam vets.
Citizen journalists like Dan put the mainstream news outfits to shame!
Thank you for this sir.
Dan's face is on the front web page on NYPost this morning 🤣He's going national
You did it. Bravo.
I had an email discussion with a guy who had a audiocast (podcast) on DB Cooper. I had written him saying you had solved the case. At the time he disagreed and was adamant that the case was not solved. I think it must have been the Vortex guy you interviewed.
I don't think anyone calls them audiocasts.
Ryan Burns. Cortex poutie. He’s STILL pouting and whining. 😂
Can u expaolin the significance of your correction?
More Intel for you, Dan >>> The Boeing 727-051 used by Northwest (and Cooper) was sold to Piedmont Air in 1978, and re-registered as N383N. and borne the name "Mt. Mitchell Pacemaker". All of us who flew the 727 N383N airplane Flight Attendants and Pilots, all knew the history of that aircraft.
Yes I’ve heard from several that flew it. It was scrapped recently.
@@ProbableCause-DanGryder The 727 was sold again to Key Airlines in 1984, and was later stored at Greenwood-Leflore Airport in Mississippi. It was scrapped in 1996.
NEVER GIVE UP, Dan!
You are now famous Dan! I just heard, on a major radio station in NYC regarding you, Dan Gryder, in solving this mystery. WABC radio gave you credit and that is amazing that this is breaking news in NYC. Great job and happy to see that you are getting recognition for your hard work.
Wow cool. What station?
Great work here. Thank you!
Dan, you are the new Sherlock Holmes or Detective Columbo !
Thank you Mr Gryder for doing the job of the FBI, freakin wonderful!!!
Just finished listening to your interview on 97.3 KIRO radio.
Thanks!
Spoke with an accent? A Mormon from Utah?
@@rg3412wait what? I’m so confused, my family is Mormon and from Utah lol. I don’t understand it tho
@@BrockettRocket01 do you have an accent? I have yet to hear an Utah Mormon that would any marked accent, as say a person from Boston or the South would.
@ I mean no? We say a few words different but that’s about it.
Dude, u r gonna b world famous. Unreal.
Americaaaa famous perhaps, THE WORLD couldn`t give a sh*t!
11.19.24 Another exceptional piece of work. Thanks for letting us hear and see what is going on.
Sorry if I missed, but has the chute been photographically or serial number matched to the ones supplied?
Of course not.
@@bills6093 I sense some sarcasm as well. Lol.
Dan, I think you're about to shut down a whole industry 😂👍
Phenomenal job Dan!
I watch these videos a couple of times to make sure I catch the details. Then I’ll play them as I fall asleep for about a week to get DG some well earned views. He puts a ton of work into these videos. He has solved the case.
His channel isn't monetized though, so the views only help YT fatten their wallets🤷♀️ just FYI
@ His channel is monetized. Just views. It helps.
@thereissomecoolstuff My channel is NOT monetized.
@ Thx Dan. Good job on Kiro Seattle yesterday. You got a lot of time on a station with a lot of viewers.
Very interesting. I think you’re on the right track Dan…
Thanks Dan!
Good investigative work Dan 👍
I love how "community" now means they all wanna backstab each other for the glory. It's like this everywhere. People are sick.
Good work. Very interesting 🤨
Can’t wait to see what DB Grider found out.
Gryder
@ my bad.
Thank you for your content.
I hope they are not about to charge somebody with any evidentiary charges. It would be a terrible break for somebody who's worked so hard figure it all out. Dan Gryder is the key that picked the lock.
I find it strange that I had a hankering for a Scooby snack the entire time I watched this video.
That Ryan guy was getting kinda pissy there. Dude was acting like someone told him there was no Santa Claus.
Ryan is a DEEP researcher who has disproved RFM as Cooper, along with 99 percent of the cooper sleuths btw. It's easily disproven.
Great Job! Masterpiece! Thanks for sharing.
Cliff’s notes: it’s a love story
What about charging the FBI agent that murdered McCoy
Did anybody get charged for Ruby Ridge, or Waco? Nope. And nobody ever will be, they are untouchable.

Turn the music down 50% or off while talking. I have a hard time hearing soft spoken people
Not too sure he would have jumped in Nam.
It's okay. He's going to "take up golf!"
I think serial numbers were recorded, since they were able to match the small amount of money found in the river to the cache. Had he saved the money, they likely would of caught him by tracing the bills.
@@DD-fj2ut The serial number I was referring to was for the parachute canopy.
I heard you on the Jake and Spike show on KIRO Seattle nice work
