Love the little warm-up at the beginning with Brubeck throwing in a snippet from "In Your Own Sweet Way" :-)

Where do you keep getting these recordings!? Thank you very much for all the hard work you're putting into getting so much great Brubeck and Desmond stuff on RUclips. Listen to that last Desmond chorus, such a slick way to end his solo... Also, never heard Brubeck end this tune in such a natural major key.

As a HUGE fan of Brubeck and Desmond, I've amassed quite a few of their recordings from various sources, many of them rare vinyl or the deep dark recesses of the internet. This particular recording is from the album 'Live In Portland, 1959', an import album that was available in the U.S. for about a week before being shelved. I'd like to think that the relaxed tempo of the song and Morello's unobtrusive use of brushes spurred Desmond on to some lyrical and tasty soloing.

I was thinking the same thing about Morello's playing. The quartet was certainly already known well by '59, but it was a relatively new group, and Desmond wasn't too fond of bombs being dropped all around him. This really sounds like Morello (and Wright as well) wanted to give Brubeck and Desmond all the room they needed.

I agree. I always thought Paul in particular sounded great in the earlier quartet years when the rhythm section stayed in a purely time-keeping role, freeing Paul to just flow freely. Shoutout to drummer Joe Dodge.
