Elizabeth Holmes: from ‘next Steve Jobs’ to convicted fraudster ► www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/jan/04/elizabeth-holmes-from-next-steve-jobs-to-convicted-fraudster
I remember how the media proped her up as if she was some messiah, a Steve Jobs even. This is what you get when you ride the hype train and don't do journalism. I'm glad this psychopath is going to jail, I hope she never comes out
Tyler Schultz, the whistle blower, was shut down and threatened by her for speaking up. She knew she was potentially endangering patients but didn't care.
Poor people who was deceived and died with a wrong diagnosis. Their family should ask for a compensation! She earned millions with the coast of lots lifes!!
her "company" had 800 employees at some time. I wonder what these have been doing all day long. I mean it was clear to anyone that the only product of the company did not work and never would be working. it's a miracle
The reason they had so many employees is bc they didn't want anyone to see the full picture of what was going on. Instead of having 1 person who knows the ins and outs of their role they had 5 people who all assume the other 4 people on the team are taking care of things. A combination of NDAs and busywork to keep lower level employees in the dark. It's the same tactic she used in the interview saying, "I'm not the lab director" setting up every lower level employee to deflect responsibility. Middle and upper management likely knew more but to what extent is unclear. She had the final say for everything and definitely deserves a hefty sentence and paying back all the money she gained under false pretenses.
I was 12 when I heard about her. As a precocious student interested in science, I had doubts as to HOW she was able to do this. I can’t believe so many ppl were fooled.
Sympathy?? Not a shred - and especially for those "investors" who were simply fuelled by greed. Nothing else. Certainly those who were mis-diagnosed have our sympathy, but in terms of those actively involved in creating this facade, it was simply an act of greed that led the company to be "worth" $1billion - another pathetic and false valuation based on greed.
They were pathetic on the stand. Literally admitted they suspected something but didn’t want to stop the gravy train-abs didn’t want to admit they’d gotten suckered. Just ego and greed.
When I used to ask for donations for my College fest....I used to carry a pretty face with me to make the atmosphere more conducive...What happened here was a case of charmed assassination. Killing it with a smile.
I don't believe Elizabeth Holmes set out to commit crimes but her lack of awareness or sense of accountability for what she was doing obviously had criminal consequences. My question is what was the "defect", "dysfunction" or disconnect in her psychology that allowed her to put herself in such a strait. By typical accounts she was highly intelligent and fairly accomplished. This case should be studied in order to uncover the dysfunction not only in her but the people who believed in her. I'm no Dr. Phil but I can look at this woman and see that something is not right in her head, I don't care what degrees she might have.
There’s nothing profound, mysterious or unique about her. She grew up in an environment that allowed her to dream big, and her insecurities manifested in grandiosity, paving the way for compulsive lies through delusions. Once she was on a roll, the addiction to validation and adulation fuelled the scammer in her. These kinds of people are everywhere and “fomo” is often a central theme of their psyches, knowing all too well, that one day they’ll have vacated this world.
I think she reveled in all of that praise she was showered with at public events. To come out and honestly say, "I'm afraid this doesn't work after all" would have taken humility that she apparently didn't have.
🔴 In a way it is really funny or what, that she considered her self some kind of a super genius like: Einstein, Newton, da Vinci, Archimedes, etc., While in reality she was the super genius of the absolute NOTHING ❗
One correction - Theranos did not fool the regulators. Holmes argued that their product - the technology - was not subject to the FDA regulations and therefore they did not need FDA approval. The Theranos lab was regulated by CLIA rules and regulations, but that is a separate issue. Theranos was not successful in their argument that their product was not governed by FDA rules. And Theranos was only ever able to get FDA approval for ONE test.
What I understand is that since she was convicted, the amount of money defrauded will play a major role in determining the prison time. It was like $140 million or so therefore she's likely to serve at least 10 years.
Yes, you're right. Also, then President Obama named her "entrepreneureal ambassador to the world" or some nonsense. Also, Betsy Devos, Trump's education secretary, was a major financial backer of Holmes. Also, Bill Frist, the former REPUBLICAN senate majority leader, was on Theranos's board of directors. So yeah, she fooled people on both sides of the political aisle, didn't she? You can't politicize this, Budanevey.
@@gabrielgonzales5907 Elizabeth's company Theranos touted Biden’s visit to its headquarters in a lengthy press release, calling it “A New Era of Preventive Health Care" summit. Both the company and Biden repeatedly posted on Twitter about the event. Biden legitimised Holmes in promoting her.
@@Budanevey Ok, so what's the takeaway here? Biden was fooled by her, other democrats were fooled by her, Trump's education secretary was fooled by her, and other republicans were fooled by her. My point is that you can't color this issue as a left vs right thing.

Shell be out in 20 years and then they’ll make a movie about her and she’ll be a celebrity just like Jordan Belford The Wolf of Wallstreet criminal
Oh so you have to go through all that just to be a celebrity? a lot of people commit suicide. She lost and she's lost.
20 years?😂 she’ll be out in less than 5

my question is how big and certified identities in the world believed in this girl, not testing, not exploring more. Of course, the money speaks more
They were afraid to be left out if they asked too many questions.
Such people like her should be sitting behind the bars. She cheated many people, and got money from the air.
I have been following her for years. Watch her pull that kid as leverage during sentencing. She is quite the slick charmer

That isn't her naturally occurring voice right?
NO, NOT at ALL!!! UGH!
She also chooses not to blink. Natural!

Yeah she sounds like a man. Creepy
She looks like one as well. And those lips, maybe she is the missing link and can make money that way....
