Le parole mi si fermano in gola per l ' emozione.. vederli finalmente, e nn guardare solo il vinile che girava sul piatto tanti anni fa.. Dio ti ringrazio..
This track represents the absolute peak of Irish folk music. All the ingredients are there: superb musicianship, brilliant ensemble playing and harmonising, not to mention Ireland's greatest ever singer, Christy Moore, showing his mastery of all the required phrasing, pacing and attitude. Planxty's best track.
I’ll have to argue with one thing that you said, I believe Luke Kelly is the finest singer to come out of Ireland 🇮🇪 but Christy Moore is not far behind
One of the many things I love about playing the pipes is you get to sit down!! Mr O'Flynn looks so straight among this hairy and bearded lads. What a great and sturdy group they were.

Planxty great - 'I never thought she would prove false - or either prove untrue - as we sailed away from Milford Bay aboard The Kangaroo .....' Superb !
Such a long story behind, this fantastic Irish song. I knew this song, by a tape sent to me by an Irish pen-friend in 1981. You see, pen-friend and tape, now by magic Internet I came across and many many thanks for posting this beautiful lively song...Oh I never thought she would prove false or even prove untrue....Greetings from far-off Argentina, not too far by now :)

No not from from everywhere, from England written by Harry Clifton an Englishman born in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. So not from Mrs. Cronin in Cork. But hey, don't let facts get in the way, being Norwegian I tend to find the English don't tend to care about other folk stealing their innovations I think it's funny..
Celia Eriksson, this version is Elizabeth Cronin’s version, the original is slightly different, that’s folk for you though! www.google.co.uk/amp/s/terreceltiche.altervista.org/the-good-ship-kangaroo-2/amp/
I love the subtle turn of the head Christy does at 3:49 ish. It was in response to one of the band preceding him in the chorus. Met him back stage at the leasurland in Galway recently after an excellent show. Absolute Gentleman. If u have a chance to go see him just do it. He’s getting better with age!
I really like this song - I was introduced to Planxty by my dad, but he also plays folk himself so I've always been around it. Thanks for posting this :)
"On board of the Kangaroo" was written in 1856 by the early British Music Hall star, Harry Clifton (born in Hertfordshire, 1832). This version is via Stan Hugill, who had various sources in England but also including Seamus Ennis who recorded Elizabeth Cronin in Cork. It's the version that Hugill printed that is sung here. The "history" given by Christy in this video is a bit of banter, not to be taken seriously.
Chalk it down boy. Fair play to ya. We have thousands of songs from Cork City alone never mind the county (check out Jimmy Crowley)but this is definitely not one of them. I mean Milford Bay like haha nothing to do with Cork. But fair play to christy for putting legs on it. Great song though and its the interpretation that makes it. Christy is a master at that
in Italy it was very difficult to find this kind of music twenty years ago or more, i think this stream of folk music is a gold mine and it's no surprise that people like Bob Dylan went fishing in it and came along with some lucky arrangements and words...one of the finest folk ensemble ever
"Good ship Kangaroo" ??? Erm, "On board the Kangaroo" Christy :-D Anyway, it's true that the song was "collected" by Seamus Ennis from Mrs Cronin in Cork ... however, it was written by the British music hall performer Harry Clifton in the mid 19th century. Edited to add: Brilliant as always from Planxty !
Thanks for uploading this. Loved Planxty. Have a collection of their albums. Have had the pleasure of meeting Christy Moore in the 1990s. I have a collection of his albums too so I’m well set for hours of blissful listening. However, how great to see video of Planxty performing.
I've been an all round music fan for 50+ years but I don't think I've ever enjoyed anything quite as much as this song, and especially the pipes solos. It's wonderful to find these old videos!
Saw them many times in the 70's--Brilliant !!!!! Christy used to come across from Ireland-Liverpool then the North East and used to play in Folk Clubs till all hours after having a few bottles of Broon Ale
fantastic...did a guest spot as a resident foreigner dj on a radio station in korea one day ...idea was to get people fron different countrys to play traditional music from where you are from. This was first song. Absolutely love it.
It's a shocking indictment of our own immigration system in the UK that band founder Christy Moore was held and questioned under the Prevention of Terrorism Act in 2004 and questioned over the lyrics of his songs.... would you believe it. Shame on us. Big Brother has arrived.
@happyasafool I'm actually back with my old lover again now :) after a year and a half split my love of 5 years has come back to me! I've stopped drinking so I listen to this music less, hahaha, but i still love this music with all my heart and it makes me cry!

Celia Eriksson I think jak is referring to the name of the band, not the song. Nevertheless no English band would be able to better Planxty’s version of this song :)
@@eb18574 Oh I think not, but I do agree that this is the very best version. I love Planxty, I think they were amazingly good and the Sweeney's Men were great too!!!
It was evidently made up by the song's writer (British Music Hall star, Harry Clifton, born in Hertfordshire, 1832). There is a Milford Haven, but not a Milford Bay in Britain. The song is not set in Canada, so the Milford Bay in Canada would simply be a coincidence. There are a lot of Milford's in Britain and in North America.
The Kangaroo was an 1853 Scottish cargo steamer that foundered in a gale off Rhoscolyn, Wales in January 1862. This song was written in 1865. Another name for the song is : Bristol Sea Shanty. The Bristol Channel flows underneath Wales to Bristol. There is an ancient main street in Bristol known as Milford Street. I don't know if there is any connection of the Bristol Channel to Milford Bay.
