  • Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Elke Büdenbender visit the island of Utøya together with Norway's Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, and Astrid Hoem, an eyewitness and survivor of the attack on July 22, 2011. The attack first caused a bomb to be detonated in downtown Oslo, killing 8 people. The perpetrator took advantage of the ensuing chaos to drive to the island of Utøya, an hour's drive west of Oslo, and shoot 69 children and young people there. The video shows the passage of the press representatives during the sunrise and gives an initial overview of the holiday complex on the island. With the arrival of the Federal President, the tour of the most important stations of the commemoration begins. The conclusion is the laying of a wreath, the insertion of roses in a round memorial plaque and the return trip to the mainland. The unabridged statements in German and Norwegian have been moved to a separate video: • Utøya: Statements nach...
Official visit by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Ms. Elke Büdenbender to the Kingdom of Norway from November 4th to 5th, 2021. The main focus of the trip was the defensive democracy, energy policy, culture and security policy. In addition to many very different appointments in Oslo, a longer visit to the island of Utøya was also on the program.

What an absolutely unspeakable act of violence. I had to look up the details of July 22, 2011 to get the full picture of what exactly transpired. I'm stunned that the perpetrator is only serving a 21-year sentence. Apparently, though, his sentence can be extended if he's still deemed a threat to society. My God. Keep him in prison. Pretty sure he would have gotten the death penalty here in the States.

They will not let him out, I am sure. The last time in public he was provocing so much just by his behaviour... I admire the Norwegians just for their patience, to let him do his speech... I am glad, that our president went there, hand in hand with the Norwegians.
