Danny, you're such a talented moderator/interviewer. I love the energy that you inject into your question asking, too. It makes us more excited as viewers. Thx!
Regarding the question about probability and taking lines I think Magnus and Paul are similar. You could call the putt the “end game.” Often Magnus will have a choice between a line that might win on the spot but because it takes a little more calculation/precision he’ll consolidate to something more simple that is still winning (but not as much so) and rely on his end game intuition to finish it.
Funny to hear their answers on the last question. Being both a huge chess fan and disc golf fan, I find it so much more likely that Magnus will be on top in 10 years than Paul. Paul still the goat though, just a lot of young talent atm looking dangerous
Yeah, I love McBeth, but I am surprised he would say something that optimistic. The young players in the sport are going to be nearly impossible to keep up with.
If I knew Magnus was gonna be at Olympus I would have cleared my lesson schedule and showed up for a glimpse. Total fan boy! I’m hoping he shows up next year! Ben Finegold and Eric Rosen would be nice too lol
my two worlds clashing. trippy. all I been doing recently is playing/watching chess and playing/watching disc golf. the similarities between these two is pretty dead on. dominant for roughly the same time period. although Magnus definitely still dominant over the rest of the field and Paul has people coming for him imo. but I think the physicality of disc golf makes it harder to stay on top into your mid 30s
It's funny to see all the disc golf players here showing support to magnus and chess, and then all the chess players that dont know anything about disc golf trying their best to bash it. It shows how welcoming the sport of disc golf is and how much negativity there is in chess 😂
@@billj4525 You say that yet I can guarantee you that if you tried to throw a disc as hard as you could right now, you wouldn't get even close to the distance as the average disc golfer 😂
@@ohsh314 Ok. That's definitely true, and it doesn't bother me one bit. Why would it, lol? When I said the sport doesn't take any real athleticism, it wasn't meant to be an insult. The sport itself doesn't take a lot of athleticism, and Magnus plays sports that do. I never said it didn't take a ton of practice and skill to be good. I have no doubt disc golf takes an extreme amount of skill and practice just as other games do. I have never even played, so naturally I wouldn't do well.
@@billj4525It definitely doesn't require traditional athleticism but u still have to fine tune the kinematics of ur body so I don't know if I would say it takes no real athleticism. Also it definitely helps to be ripped just like in most sports when playing disc golf, Ezra Aderhold is proof lol. Athleticism is mainly the fitness of ur body, but I think on the fringes, fine control of ur body in physical activity should be considered athleticism too. Most people would say that u have to be athletic to throw a baseball 90+ mph but when Anthony Barela throws a disc 90+ mph that needs to be considered athletic too.
Watching two of my biggest idols and the two sports I watch coincide is it me absurd and absolutely freaking awesome considering how far apart the sports are. Hell, when you're at it, throw armwrestler Devon Larratt in the mix aswell and I've got myself a hattrick
I am sure disc golf requires excellent hand-eye coordination, but I'm fairly surprised to learn that it's a professional sport. I didn't even know that it existed until about two minutes ago!
It's been around for at least 25 years because I've been playing off and on for that long. Go play 18 on any decent size course and see how you feel about the skill involved. It's a great way to get outside and have fun with family and friends. Good Luck!

Magnus was always denying the GOAT title. I watched many interviews of him he was always humble about this title. But surprisingly, he didn't deny it in this interview and didn't even comment that he's being called the GOAT of chess. He said in his interview with Levy that Kasparov is the GOAT of chess, not himself.
Yeah, he said it just a few months ago. He probably didn't feel like bringing it up again. Levy specifically asked him so he answered. Here it was more talked about in passing. He said a year or two ago in the Lex Fridman interview that he needs another 5-10 years of longevity to be the GOAT over Garry, and I think that's accurate. Recency bias has a lot of people saying he's the GOAT. If Kasparov was playing his place and Magnus played back then I can guarantee a lot of people who are saying Magnus is the GOAT now would be saying Kasparov is instead. He was just as dominant if not more. That said, I wouldn't be shocked if Magnus overtakes him some day. He might , he might not.
Does Paul still play? I know he had a injury/s the last few years. Although I really like what you've done as far as setting up courses all over the world and getting kids into DG. I can't quite call you the GOAT yet. Time will tell. Oh and Magnus? You seem like a really cool person. Paul if you are responsible for the Chess/DG thing? You've got a lot closer in my mind ATT A BOY
Awesome interview. But i gotta say, when you're comparing Chess and Disc Golf as Niche sports, i thought it felt a bit weird. I mean Chess isn't the most popular sport on earth, but it's been around for so long and pretty much everybody played it at one point. Sorry for rambling, just felt it was a bit goofy
I think what "Niche Sports" mean is how many people are good at Chess and play competitively in tournaments. almost every person can Run, but not every person are qualified to be in the Olympics. So that's why it's niche I guess, because the skill ceiling is so high, and not enough people care/able enough to become one of the tops. But yeah I admit it's goofy.
@@brennanacton177 Indeed, I remember seeing more longer and civilized reply chains on RUclips before, albeit for the internet this is a high bar. No one here is being unnecessarily lachrymose or spiteful. I appreciate you too.
I know most likely Paul will not be on top of the MPO division... unless father time somehow gives him a reprieve but Magnus? Do chess players have a longer shelf life?
No. It's about the same. They peak in their late twenties and are typically washed up by 40. As in other sports, modern nutrition and training may be expanding their competitive window.
Chess is one of those games where its difficult to challenge someone significantly stronger than you. Magnus is just on another dimension when it comes to this game, no one can touch him, and hes at a point where he probably knows that and when something is no longer challenging, it becomes boring and redundant in a sense. When youve mastered something, move onto something else.. why not right ☕️

Never thought I’d see Magnus and McBeast together in a thumbnail.
Yeah i was like wtf??
😊 yay 🎉 two passions combined
Man I just realized that I really love magnus' personality, he's such a genius and a great human
This was an awesome interview! I'm a huge fan of Paul and it was cool to see the similarities between his mindset and Magnus's.

Chess and discgolf are my most favorit games past few years. So this is amazing!
:) me too
I was hoping to see somebody with this intersection of passion. Lucky you
Quite the unexpected duo
Our two passions in one collaboration. Absolutely awesome.
Paul said that he feels motivated to be on top for his kid. Magnus you know what to do.
This is a great interview by Danny. Quality questions that were unique and applied to both champions. Well done!!!
Im surprised magnus didnt name chess pieces when he was asked what he sacrificed.
ESPECIALLY AWESOME video for us being pro disc golfers with a chess RUclips channel. Our two heros are Paul and Magnus!
Magnus carlsen has a phenomenal adaptation capability at any game.

Two of my favorite activities coming together! And interviewing two of the best to ever play.

wow magnus always in a shape

Yes Magnus always stays fit. As did both other GOAT candidates. Physical fitness is crucial in keeping your energy levels up and outlasting opponents

Magnus once again combining my realities. First, he starred on an episode of Hustler Casino Live playing poker and now disc golf!

Magnus: Well! chess is still hobby to me 💀🔥
Kimi raikkonen: driving is more of a hobby
This has been a great interview. He's a genius at what he does and his passion is an inspiration for us. This Magnus guy is also pretty cool I guess.
