Dang it's crazy how 2 years later the prices for both of these have only gone up, you're lucky to find the 5r under 250, and the a6000 goes for about like 450, wish I had gotten into cameras a couple years ago lol

Where are you buying cameras from? I just checked and the A6000 is steadily going for 350$ and the 5R is around 200$. And 200$ i feel is a bit high because its out of stock right now on most camera sites. If KEH had one available i feel it would definitely sell for less then 200$. I picked up a Nex 7 because i feel its a better camera then the 5R and i paid about 235$ with a charger.

If you are feeling brave, I would look at parts/for repair E mount cameras. If the camera starts off fine but shows a "turn camera off than on" error message when you try and take shot - then it has a shutter issue and more likely than not, it will be an easy fix.
Most Sony sensors have an electronic front curtain shutter as well as the "main" shutter. The spring on this tends to get looser over time and on a lot of cameras it becomes too weak to actuate properly. The front curtain shutter issue is easy to fix. You can just turnoff the e-front curtain shutter function, which fixes it most of the time lets you use the camera with just the main shutter. Some people even prefer this. The advantage you get for having it on is pretty minimal and debatable.
You can also dismantle the camera and tighten the screw that holds the shutter spring. This isn't hard but requires you to strip the camera to pretty much bare bones and reassemble it, which might put people off.
I picked up a 5R for £30 ($40ish in USD) that was being sold as spares or repair. Got it working immediately by turning the e-front curtain off - will probably dismantle it and properly fix the front curtain shutter once I have a quiet weekend.
Of course, its a bit of a gamble as it could always be a more serious issue with the shutter that isn't as easy to fix and the camera might be a write off.

Great comparison! You "scared" me with that first video since I just picked one up off eBay, but now you've reinforced my initial impressions. The only drawback for me is the serious lag in autofocus speed that I was unaware of before watching this. Still, the overall bang for the buck is there and I'll just keep in mind to use it for specific types of shots. Thank you for this!! New subscriber and love your humor, the ways you make comparisons. $100 is a great price for the NEX 5r - the more I use it, the more I love it. It doesn’t have the autofocus that the a6000 has, but overall, it’s such an enjoyable camera to use. Especially for vlogging - I notice I bring the NEX 5r with me more than the a6000. It’s definitely a great all around camera.

Sony Nex 5 was a great line of cameras. In my opinion not really comparable with A6000 because it's smaller, lighter, without EVF and hot shoe. Great sensor and obviously very sharp images. I take care of my 5r because it has no rivals today in terms of dimensions and usability. Moreover it is very well built
and very good looking. The tilt movement of the rear screen is smooth and precise, very helpful for quick change of perspective. Wi-Fi connectivity works well. I bought in the past an expensive Olympus Omd- Em1 for EVF and sensor stabilization but it's heavy, less usable and the software inside is a nightmare for me. Look for one in perfect condition and you will have no regrets.

I’ve got a Sony NEX 5r, a5000 and a6000. Even though the NEX 5r is the oldest, it still has the best audio of the three. Autofocus on the NEX 5r is pretty good, but it’s just nowhere near the a6000 unfortunately. Still, considering the NEX 5r is an 8 year old camera, it’s genuinely impressive!

I replaced my A6000 with a 5R. That said, as someone who shoots stills and doesn't do video, I think the A6000 is worth at least twice the price of the 5R. The autofocus is so slow and unreliable, its barely usable IMHO even for stills (I imagine it would be even worse for video).
The image quality is honestly good enough at 16mp - but the lower resolution definitely noticeable, especially if you are shooting raw.
Where the NEX-5R does shine is the compactness. It is tiny even compared to the A6000. Its genuinely pocketable if you pair it with a pancake lens. The A6000 also lacks a digital level - which is an insane omission on the part of Sony, as all of their other cameras have had it.
If I was only to have one camera, or if I was beginning with photography again on a budget, I damn hell sure would not want to do it with a 5R, whereas the A6000 would be the camera I go for (or more realistically an a6300 for that digital level).
I don't regret buying the 5R, it is an incredibly fun camera given how tiny it is. I usually pair it with the Sony 35mm f1.8 , but it can go even smaller with the 16mm or 20mm f2.8 pancake lenses. Whilst it is fun, it is also my slowest, least consistent and reliable camera. Hell, even my RX100 m4 (which "only" has contrast detect) is a more reliable shooter - and in some areas (though not all) even the image quality on the 1" BSI stacked sensor beats out the 16mp APSC on the 5R.

Hi Steven, thanks for your review. I'm in the middle of buying a Sony Nex 5N (very similar to the 5R) and a sony A6000. The Sony Nex 5N with no lens is €100 euros and the Sony A6000 with a 16-50 lens costs €300. Do you think for the price would worth buying it? I'm impressed of how fast the autofocus works on the A6000. But the images and videos look pretty much the same.

Yeah, I hadn’t filmed with any of my NEX cameras in about 6 years. I was surprised to see how different the experience was from the current A6000 line. I’d definitely like to see the A5100 compared to the A6000. Internally, they’re both the same camera - same sensor, processor, etc. Since I’m a new channel, I’ve been filming videos about cameras I already own. I’m gonna ask around and see if anyone I know has an A5100 I can use for a video.

The 5R also only has 16 mp vs the A6000 having 24 mp. The NEX-7 is 24 mp just like the A6000 and still cheaper by 100$. @@laptoprelaks Here in the USA i had the complete opposite experience. Besides maybe Ebay i have neve seen a 5R/T/N for sale anywhere, just the basic NEX-5. The 6 and 7 on the other hand are readily available on sites like KEH which is were i picked mine up from. In Good condition with a battery charger i picked up my NEX-7 for around 235$. At the time it was one of the cheapest 24 mp mirrorless cameras i could find with a removable lens. But in comparison i think i would still choose a A6000 just because of the ability to shoot RAW video, phase detect auto focus. NEX-7 auto focus isnt that great and the fact it only shoots 8 bit mp4 is not super exciting. I am curious though about the Canon EOS-M having an available hacked firmware that allows anamorphic video, 5k and 14 bit raw recording? for a going rate of around 180$. I wouldnt mind giving that platform a try.
