    As a first year beekeeper your videos on the fundamentals of beekeeping are invaluable, I found your channel before I got my first hive {a long lang} and am so grateful I did, the info in your vids is like having a virtual bee buddy. Many thanks for your knowledge and mentoring.
    P.S. Hi from Australia!

      Thank you so much for the comment! Best of luck with your bees!! We hope to go back to Australia one day. We went to the Byron Bay blues festival a few years ago and had so much fun. Wish we could have stayed longer.

    Thorough examination of a hive. You explore a lot of different observations on what goes on in a colony in Hawaii. The examples of how the honeybees do the things they do around that cluster of frames of bees within your boxes is interesting. Hope your queen is okay, maybe just dark, and is hiding. Thanks for the video of a hive in your area as compared to ours in the Continental US and where the queen stops laying especially in more northen regions and the like. It is almost Valentine's Day in February and a time for sideline and commercial Beekeepers take theirs into Almond Pollination in my home state of California. A very important service and a good build up coming out of winter here. It has been raining really hard this past week with very high winds. Noticed a broken power pole at the beginning of the week. And a time for many orchard trees blowing down to the grower's grief. I remember once having a almond tree uprooting and coming down onto my 4 way double deep pallets of hives. Now I pack a small chain saw when driving down the hill to inspect my colonies after placing them in these ochards. All the things you learn are quite remarkable over the years in keeping and helping your honeybees! :)

    Your thoughts on the path to gloveless? I wear 6 mil nitrile gloves now for dexterity, and even with a tad or no smoke, a little spray of sugar water, I rarely get bumped or tagged. But still nervous to go without.

    I wish I had found your channel when I was brand new, you format your videos real well with your editing and narration.
    It kind of surprises me you didn't see any drones yet, I know they are are already starting swarm season down in parts of Texas and making Spring nucs in Florida. Have a great Have a great week Larisa.👍(hope I spelt that right.)

      Thank you! My hives in higher elevation always have drones present but down where it's dry and lower in elevation there's not much blooming. It's all about the food.

    can you add lemmon grass oil to get more production.?

    • @BeekeepingMadeSimple
      @BeekeepingMadeSimple  3 месяца назад

      You can most certainly try. I have only heard of using lemongrass oil to attract swarms or to get a package of bees to stay in a new hive. The best way to get more production is to put your bees in a good location with lots of good food and little competition/robbing. I move my bees often. It is a headache but THE MOST IMPORTANT thing for your bees.

    Hi, Could you please tell if it is possible to keep chickens and bees in the same garden or nearby, just fence separating them? Garden with a very small size around 40-50 square meters. Thank you!

    • @BeekeepingMadeSimple
      @BeekeepingMadeSimple  3 месяца назад

      It depends on the temper of the bees. There were wild chickens that lived in the tree about 50' from 20 of my hives and I never noticed a problem. However, A small garden isn't ideal for bees especially if people or pets walk around the garden. Bees are also very sensitive to smell so its important there's no strong smells from the hen house. The good news is that bees can be put lots of places. I keep them at other people's farms where they have the space and lots of food. My bees never did well in the city.cemetaries and botanical gardens are also great places for bees.

    I’m 2 years into my beekeeping journey. I noticed you used a deep and medium box for your hives? Is there a reason for this vs 2 deeps like we see a lot of folks use? Also, a buddy of mine brought back honey from Hawaii while on vacation. I believe it’s called Wai Meli. I was kinda surprised by the lack of flavor, resembles simple sugar syrup. Any thoughts on this honey? Thanks for the content.

    • @BeekeepingMadeSimple
      @BeekeepingMadeSimple  4 месяца назад +2

      Yes, I do use just one deep and the rest mediums. This is the way the apiaries I worked for ran their hives and so what I got used to. It's a common commercial apiary way of doing things. I don't have much upper body strength so a medium for my second brood box is a lot lighter. Since we don't have a frost, we don't have to change up the location of frames for winter time or worry about early spring swarming.
      I've never tried wai meli's honey. They have a nice looking jar! Was the honey white? The kiawe honey is really popular here. It has a mild flavor. Kind of tastes like vanilla icing. It's SUPER expensive but really just due to some good marketing. The Mac nut honey is pretty good. Tastes like maple.syrup. the lehua honey is the only one that is from a Hawaiian flower. That honey is really delicious but also mild in flavor and very sweet. My favorite is the silver oak. It's kind of fruity. I don't give that one away 😊 I keep it all for myself.
