- In this video, I react to the Welsh song, Yma o Hyd. This was an incredible performance by Dafydd Iwan. Yma o Hyd is considered an Unofficial Welsh Anthem and I can honestly see why. This was such an awesome song to celebrate the people of Wales, the Welsh language, and culture.

The correct pronunciation is as follows. The song is pronounced as Umma o heed. And his name is pronounced Davith Yuwan. The man they sing about at the start is Magnus Maximus, the last Roman leader in Britain, who led his troops out of Britain in the year 410 AD, never to return. The Welsh called him Macsen Wledig. The Welsh language is one of the oldest, if not the oldest in Europe. It borrowed words from the Romans 2000 years ago, such as Pont (bridge), eglwys (church) and finestr (window). Many linguists say that a language or its basis has to have been around for at least 2,000 years before it is in common usage . On this basis, Welsh, or its forerunner Brythonic Cymric, must be at least 4,000 years old.

My ex husband and my in laws were Welsh, Mother in Law was North Wales so spoke beautiful Welsh, Father in Law was a Miner from South Wales, with the most amazing Tenor voice I have ever heard, may they rest in peace... I miss them.
Someone may have already mentioned this but the singer of this song was an activist for many years and he fought for the resurgence in the welsh language we have seen today. It must be so emotional for him to see all those people singing his song back to him.

Luckily the Welsh language has survived..my parents and grandparents were banned and punished from speaking Welsh! So proud of our language…yes, in the 1700’s England did a review of the Welsh language and decided that it was of no benefit and not to be encouraged..WW2 proved them wrong when it was used as the Germans had no idea what was being said

We were a collection of tribes with similar languages and a common culture. The Scotti held land that covered the north east of Ireland and parts of the West of Scotland. The Picts lived in the rest of what is now Scotland.

@@Yrhyddgen You are both incorrect. The Scots have been around a lot longer than 1,000 years. They migrated from Ireland 1,700 years ago into western Scotland. Prior to that Northern Scotland was inhabited by the Picts who spoke a Brythonic language and southern Scotland spoke Old Welsh (also Brythonic). The Scots brought with them their language which was Gaelic and this became the predominant language in the West and north of Scotland.. The English ( Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Frisians) first arrived approx 1,600 years ago (not 800). Within a few hundred years of first arriving a number of Kingdoms were establish in England such as Wessex, Mercia and Northumbria. Wales was made up of a number of Kingdoms such as Gwynedd, Powys and Deheubarth. Scotland also was made up of a number of different countries which changed over the centuries such as Strathclud, Gododin, Dalriada and Alba.. The oldest surviving Welsh literature was actually written in present day Scotland in the old Welsh Kingdom of Gododdin. Wales was not a land of tribes when England came into being. Wales was a land of different kingdoms unitedd by their culture, language and the Laws of Hywel Dda

Shwmae, I speak welsh and live in south wales. I went to a Welsh school where you only speak english when you've got an english lesson or if a stand in teacher for any subject is english, although we used to purposely speak our mother tongue to annoy them😂
Im English but this song never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand (could be my Gran's Welsh blood). Welsh as a language is making a come back, being taught again in schools. There is an amazing live version of this song with Dafydd performing to a stadium before a game, seeing his emotion at not only people singing his song but IN WELSH proving its still alive is amazing.

Welsh singing is on a totally different level from everyone else's. It's fantastic. See if you can see some videos of male voice choirs. Also see if you can find one on the official Welsh National Anthem, there's a really good one sung at a rugby match on here. In English that anthem is called Land of My Fathers,
in Welsh Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.
Welsh people suffered to preserve their language, the English rulers of Wales inflicted English upon them and in many instances for many years punished them for speaking their mother tongue but they kept it alive despite the pressure to abandon it. The same happened to Irish people who were also banned from speaking their own language under British rule. Scotland's own language survived the same opposition. Cornish almost died out but it is being revived and Manx, from the Isle of Man, survived. In the Channel Islands people have their own languages based on Norman French.
Welsh is a living language, I am in England but there are and were members of my family that spoke/speak it. My family moved to Yorkshire in the 1870s but kept it going for as long as they could. There was another Welsh neighbour who used to have conversations in Welsh with my great great uncle, in Yorkshire!
If you go to Wales you will find that all street signs, signs on public buildings etc are in both Welsh and English. There are TV programmes and radio programmes completely in Welsh too.
As a Scot I have to say Wales is a great place and the people are superb , only been there twice.

Magnus Maximus was actually a Roman Emperor and seasoned soldier, believe it or not. He helped Wales strengthen our defenses, he fought and defeated the Picts and Scots with us amongst other things. He was an ally to us ancient Britons rather than an enemy. Which is funny because we Fought the Romans for more than 30 years non stop when the Romans were trying to conquer Wales, But the Silures (South Wales tribes) was too strong. The Romans never got a strong foothold in Wales as we were masters of guerrilla warfare and our terrain is all hills, mountains and rivers. There's still Roman writings surviving from that time period speaking of how good the Silures were, how ferocious, fearless and how skilled we was in battle. Probably the most successful tribes of warriors of all of time.
@@BC_Joshie I worked with Prof Ray Howels for years and he believes that Siluriand fought them for over a hundred years because of us not receiving Civitas u til 182 AD. I do not know how true this is but a good historian friend said that there is a document in Rome that states that the Romans paid us from fighting with them in Gwent?
Macsen Wledig was the Welsh name for the usurping fourth-century Roman Emperor Magnus Maximus. Magnus, an accomplished soldier, had come to Britain to help protect the province from the inroads of Barbarians. Magnus achieved a great victory over the Picts and Scots in 383AD and the army proclaimed him emperor.
As very proud Welsh woman, You should also listen to our actual national anthem sung at a rugby game when we beat England. I'm from Wales btw.
It's pronounce Umma o Heed if you get what i mean. 18.56% speak Welsh still unfortunately wish there was more, the total population of Wales 3.29 million. Recent years its been put into our schools that future kids learn Welsh for increase the language speaking and to keep it alive. At one point it was said that the English wanted our language to die off as the relationship isn't as good as it could have been and its also due to other cultures coming into the country hasn't helped either. I'm English, but my parents friends are from north wales, i spent a lot of time there as a child, and they taught me this song, and a little Welsh. I think it's a fantastic country, and more people should learn the language. They're technically more British than us English, as the romans vikings etc couldn't get to them as easily. Disgraceful that they pushed them to use English. Keep that language alive my welsh friends!! 🏴

I'm English, and were I on the English side of the border, and you came to me for a job, I'd mark it down as being a bonus. I can't speak Welsh, but you can speak both. That means that the Welsh are also welcome to speak both languages. A second language is always good.
Unless you went to school prior to 1939 you would have been taught welsh in school. Nothing has stopped you learning it but yourself.

I have learnt Welsh since privately..none of the people I went to school with speak Welsh and only know what they’ve learned themselves and this wasn’t just at my school. We were told that French was the language of commerce and better for our future

Not just Wales, Welsh is still spoken in some communities in Argentina! Welsh is a beautiful language (I say that as an Englishman) but is one of six languages spoken on these islands - the others being Cornish (similar to Welsh and Breton French - I believe they have the same Celtic roots), Irish Gaelic, Scots Gaelic, Manx (another Celtic language) and English. Another language spoken in the Orkney Islands is a dialect of Scots Gaelic which is heavily influenced by old Norse (Norn) which comes from the Norwegian Viking settlement.
Also the languages spoken in the Channel Islands based on Norman French.
Plus Scots which developed from Old English much as Modern English did, only from different dialects of OE.
Don't forget Scots, it is not just English with an accent, it is a language of it's own.
Basically, the Welsh people were punished just for speaking our own language. Even school kids used to be punished for speaking our language. But the Welsh language is the OLDEST language in Europe, and around 500,000 people in Wales speak Welsh. There are also Welsh speakers in Patagonia that have been there for almost 200 years.
In (one of) my schools kids were beaten years ago for speaking English instead of Latin! Well, you going to have to teach them some way...

The so-called 'Welsh not' was a real thing, but you had to go to a paying school for the privilege! Economically if you were going to provide for your parents, you would need to know English.
Back in the day the Scot’s didn’t know English,they spoke Gaelic,Latin,French to the ones that could afford it,half the Scot’s couldn’t read,but they knew Gaelic,and to be perfectly honest I bet all the money and power in the world,Scot’s,Irish,Welsh would never speak another word in English !!!!!!!
@ I disagree. Scots is a language of its own, descended from the Anglo Saxons. It is separate from English, but has the same roots.
yes we still speak welsh. we are even kept in lunch time for speaking english at school.
It's the opposite of the Welsh Knot, I do not approve the mindset I'm a southerner and only speak a smattering of the song of our people because of the use of of the Welsh Knot. This sounds like a modern version - the English Knot. I want 100% of us Welsh to be fluent, but not at the cost of punishing schoolkids for speaking other languages.
Welsh is still spoken by about 20% of the people in Wales. In the northern and western parts it's up to 60% or 70% in some places. The proportion of people in Wales who could speak Welsh declined steadily in the 19th and 20th centuries, but now it is taught in all schools and it's rising again.
Many people can speak it but if anyone speaks english to them they respond in it; especially older people who learned it was easier not to give people an excuse to be obnoxious. It is also polite as we have so many tourists. Some older people won't even admit to speaking it on a census. My Grandfather an Estate Head Gardener was forbidden from speaking Welsh and forced to go to the English Church. His job depended on it. His home was also tied to the Estate. In fact it was built for him and his growing family. So I question the 20%. My father would never answer the question 'Do you speak Welsh?', sad.
Wales is a land of two languages, and that means learning in both Welsh and English. How this is done will depend on the policy of a school and on the area you live in; but wherever you are in Wales, it is compulsory for children from 5 - 16 to learn Welsh, at least as a second language.

The population of Wales is about 3.5 million. Approx. 600 thousand are Welsh speakers mainly in West and North Wales.
Generally in South Wales ( bordering England) they are non Welsh speaking Welsh.
Welsh is the first language for a lot of my family, and a lot of people I have worked with.
I love to visit north Wales just so that I can listen to the Welsh speakers - it is a beautiful language - to me it sounds as though they are singing. (and the scenery is quite magnificent!)
There usedto sing ⅗ Welsh in schools, but then they stopped and now it's on the intake.Again been taught in welsh plus the welsh have beautiful voicesalso the Irish the sing in school alot musical classes they also have beautiful vocies and have there owm language it Called gaylick.
Love that you've done this. It's great to see people in other parts of the world learning about Wales & you really understand what the song's about. This video makes me sooo emotional every time I see it. There are many first language Welsh speakers where I live in North Wales & in other parts of Wales too. The English (yeah British but England have always called the shots) government tried to destroy it by banning it in schools & all official use, but actually it was saved in large part because the bible was translated into Welsh & back in the day Welsh communities were very devout chapel goers.

I'm Scottish and we have Scottish Gaelic pronounced Galick. Unfortunately, our language was severely restricted. I live on Clydeside and have more in common with the Welsh language historically in my area. We spoke Cumbric which is the same basis as Cymru. It was Old Welsh and I live in the Hen Ogledd. My town is the Ystrad Clud or Alt Clut. Our King was Welsh Rydderych Hael. We have a long history of Welsh forebears which is not taught locally. I have found this out myself. I am proud of my Scottish/Welsh and Irish heritage. I love listening to Gaelic singing and Welsh Male Voice Choirs, especially in Welsh. Alba gu bràth 🏴 Cymru am byth.
Historically Gaelic speakers were forbidden to speak Gaelic in schools in Scotland and it has been lost in comparison to the Welsh language. Although there are Scottish Gaelic speakers in Nova Scotia, Canada who still preserve the language and I believe that Welsh is spoken in Patagonia.
The Old North. Let's not forget Y Gododdin, one of the oldest pieces of literature in Welsh, which tells of a war/raiding party from Edinburgh to Catterick.
Plus the Scots language which developed from Old English in parallel to modern English and produced magnificent literature such as by Dunbar and Henrysoun, as well as The Kingis Quair. Sadly, after 1603 it was no longer the language of the court and eventually became seen as nothing more than a bastardised form of English, to be punished for speaking.
My father was at Robert Gordon's school in Aberdeen in the 1920s and 1930s when Scots cultural nationalism first developed. The school Scout troop was to the fore in defying Baden-Powell, who wanted a universal Scout uniform, and getting the kilt as part of Scottish Scout uniform. They were also taught one day a week in the local dialect of Scots, Doric, according to Dad. All his life he could switch immediately from RP English straight into Doric and back again.

During the industrial revolution in the 1800s early 1900s the English tried to eradicate the Welsh language. They targeted children in schools dealing out brutal physical punishment to any child caught speaking welsh, look up the 'Welsh Not' for more information. At this time Welsh language use declined to low levels but during the 20th century a revival has brought the language back.

Chwarae teg (fair play) you make a fair crack at trying to pronounce the Welsh words, but the extra vowels take some getting used to (yes some letters that are consonants in English are vowels in Welsh).
As a Saes born Celt (Welsh and Irish but born in Blackpool, NW England), I actually learned more about Welsh history and language than my Welsh born hubby. His generation was not allowed to take Welsh even as an extra language and I had a headteacher who was from north Wales in my junior school and our whole final year was focused on Wales, history, geography, folk songs and a tiny bit of language, culmination of that was a week exploring North Wales.
Now, our small valleys town (4000 people) has a Welsh language comprehensive school, which is bloody amazing (all subjects are taught in Welsh not English)
The Welsh language was the victim of a concerted effort to eradicate it by the English, it was over a very long time as well, started by removing it as an official language, having all legal proceedings in English only, to not that long ago (last century) where kids were punished for speaking Welsh in school (look up the Welsh not)
If you are looking for a really insightful lecture about Welsh culture and identity and the oppression of the Welsh language and people , there is one on RUclips by the actor Micheal Sheen. He was asked to give the annual Raymond Williams lecture in 2017, "who speaks for Wales" it's beautiful and passionate, and when he researched material to give the lecture it led to him returning his OBE to the royal family as he felt holding it now clashed with his views.
I moved here at 17, in 1990, and started to learn Welsh 20+ years ago and it's a truly beautiful language, and my grandad would be so happy to know I ended up in his homeland, I've now lived twice a long in Cymru as i did in Lloegr (England) and only a native would know I'm a Saesnaeg ;)

Welsh (Cymraeg), Scots Gaelic, Irish Gaeilge, Manx (Isle of Man) and Cornish (Kernewek) from Cornwall/Kernow all suffered from English expansion and colonialism. For hundreds of years successive English monarchs and governments tried to wipe out the Celtic languages, people and culture. People were punished and imprisoned for speaking their native language. Cymraeg is doing far better than the rest of the Celtic languages. Apologies to those in England. 🏴🇮🇪🏴🇮🇲🏴
Judging from the comments below while you may have got one or two details wrong. You100% got the meaning right. It is a celebration of the Welsh language and culture. The whole of Wales will love you for this reaction as its not something many take a look at and it deserves it as its is a truely stiring song.
Im from Froncysyllte, the most famous male voice chour is named after the village and all the men are from the valley.
Macsen was a Welsh Prince, and he went to Europe in the dying years of the Roman occupation of Britain. Later after wars between England and Wales the Welsh were overcome by England. There were other Princes of Wales who were Welsh. Welsh is still spoken today, mainly in the North of Wales. Today a Welsh person can choose to be educated in either Welsh or English, there are schools for both. At one time there were efforts to kill off Welsh language, but the sheer stubbornness of the Welsh prevailed.
One place which still speaks Welsh is a part of Patagonia, where many Welsh people migrated when miners were in high demand in Patagonia.

Wales was taken by Edward the first in the 1200 s and we have fought for our language ever since . Wales had its own princes who fought amongst themselves 🫤 we had our own laws which king Edward deemed illegal under his Norman laws . So we fought and kept the language best we could .
Magnus Maximus, a Roman general/rebel who marched on Rome from Britain while Britain was a colony of the Roman Empire. Through myth and legend he grew to become a Welsh great hero who died in battle. They called him Macsen, or Maxim.

Llywelyn Ap Gruffudd was the last prince of Wales who struggled unsuccessfully to drive the English from Welsh territory. Llywelyn was killed on 11 December 1282, an event which eventually brought Welsh political independence to an end.

In the past our children ,if they spoke their native (first) language in school, were made to wear a wooden board around their necks saying "no Welsh". We were oppressed by the English. Despite this, we are still here and we are still a nation.

Prince Macsem, was the Roman General Magnus Maximus. He had the bright idea of recruiting a bunch of Welsh mercenaries, to conquer Rome. Which they did.
My nieces study their school subjects in both Welsh and English. They often chat with each other, their cousins and school friends in Welsh. It’s very much part of today’s Wales.

Wales has a pride and a true passion that is not like any other country. Wales has been oppressed for hundreds of years, one example is that the country is the only country not symbolised on the Union Jack flag, which further fires us to stand together as one. The English parliament have tried to suppress Wales. For many years, despite being our national language, it was banned from legal documents, and they suppressed its use, as much as they were able, in everyday life. One example is place names were changed to English. The language is now growing, and the country is reclaiming its heritage. Most English people think Welsh is a dying language, but 17% of the nation speaks Welsh, with many celebrities speak it as their first language but it gets hidden as they communicate publically on TV in English. Welsh history is not taught in English schools, and most English folk cannot give three examples of anything that relates to the rich Welsh history. When Wales produced rich copper, slate and coal, guess who came in and extracted them, and took their money away from Wales? So, despite everyone and everything, we are still here.

Just a quick pointer....
dafydd is pronounced 'da', like the first two letters of dad and 'vith', like with but change the 'w' to a 'v'.
Thus dafydd.
The welsh alphabet is quite differnt to the English one. One of the main differences, is the wellsh alphabet has NO capital letter sounds. So ther's no A, B, C it's, a, b, c, and so on.
Look it up, it'll be quite the eye opener for you.

About 3.3 million people in Wales. By the 1950s, only a few thousand still spoke Welsh. Now, with guys like Dafydd, Local Councils, the Welsh Senydd and many schools, about a million people speak it to some usable level, though English is the most spoken language in Wales.

Welsh pride is in your blood. We still cry when we hear our anthem, not just because it’s one of the best, but also because Welsh identity is a badge we wear with honour & pride. To be from “the Land of Song, of hundreds of castles, of Mythical legends, of Merlin & Dragons, of a still spoken language defying centuries of attempts to suppress & punish Welsh speakers.

Year 6 age10 my class dressed in victorian clothing as tourists would watch us have that era lessons. I got punished for speaking welsh.
There are @ 3 million of us Welsh . Around 20% can speak Welsh fluently but Welsh is recognised as an official language and as such all road signs are in Welsh and English language, we can communicate in Welsh with any government department and even give evidence in court in Welsh. We have a Welsh language TV and radio station.

Hi, I'm Welsh and lived in Wales all my life, 55 years and I don't know anyone who speaks Welsh. There are areas where only Welsh is spoken but it is now a minority language. My Great Grandparents couldn't speak English but the generations that followerd only spoke English due to the United Kingdom's education system. Welsh schools have brought the language back into the education programme and my children who are now adults, know a few words/sentences in Welsh but unless these children have Welsh speakers at home where they can have conversations, the language is, once again, abandoned.
My Welsh son in law can't speak Welsh but my English grand daughter moved to Wales as a child and can speak Welsh.
The Welsh language is very strong. The North likes to say South Wales can't speak welsh, but don't listen to them. The welsh language is still strong in the South and getting stronger

My Great Grandfather was caned in school for speaking Welsh as the English coal and steel masters tried to wipe out the Welsh culture in the 18th and 19th centuries, they were treated like slaves. His uncle who wa killed by a coal mine train in the early 1900's was sent home to his wife ina sack!!!
