I've noticed that all of Damien Rice's songs seem to link in some way, in Elephant he says 'do you still forget the breeze?' in reference to The Blowers Daughter, and in this song he says 'that delicate look on your face' in reference to Delicate, along with countless little tidbits that are featured in all of his songs. All his music is a tragic story line that so fluidly connects with everything he sings, every single song is in some way about the same thing- his heartbreak. Damien you genius.
And does he drive you wild? Or just mildly free? This is a reference to The Box formerly known as Wild and Free. The genius of this references is that it doesn't matter which songs came first. He had it all in his mind. Welcome to Damien Rice's Lyricverse
@@DressedRunner thanks for bringing up that the Box used to be called Wild and Free, I didn't know that before. I looked up the original recording and it gave me goosebumps. I wasn't super into The Box before, but I'll definitely be listening to it more often now!
I do not know why i torture myself with this song. Listening to it numerous times in a row, holding back tears that i shouldn't even want to shed over her.
Sometimes you look from the distance while the one you love goes on living her life without you.And then you think about what you gonna do, "what about me?".And you have no answer.Because this is life, no answer, no reasons, just love.
He must have penned these lyrics with tears for ink, and a heavy heart only a broken person can relate too. Its nice to see that we are not suffering alone.
This song made me cry so many times that I won't count. Love is the greatest source of our happiness, but also the deepest meaning of pain. Relating to these lyrics is masochistic... But it's so true.
I met Damien Rice and week and a half ago at his show in Washington D.C and I still cannot believe it! He has really beautiful eyes! Hands down the best show I've been too, especially when he invited people on stage to sing backup for him..at least 200 people rushed the stage and he only asked for 30 people lol what can you expect? Also discovered a new favorite, My Bubba who opened for him! LOVE YOU DAMIEN! Accidental Babies is a abdolute favorite!
I saw him last week on PBS do a performance with Joan Baez for her 75th anniversary performance in NY. He belted out an Irish ballad, accompanied himself with an instrument I've never seen before and Joan joined in with vocals and acoustic guitar. The two of them gave a masterpiece performance of that ballad. The first pieces I fell in love with were Accidental Babies, Cheers Darlin' and The Animals Were Gone, which I heard on Last FM some years ago. I envy you for seeing a live performance. Must have been extraordinary! So much talent !
I don't know what it is about this song, but it touches something inside everytime I listen to it. The lyrics are so intimate, and bold, and raw. They are like that last hot and sad caress before everything is over, when there's no hope, just despair.
his girlfriend who was also the vocalist in his band back then broke up with him. this was in the last album they were together. he took it hard and stopped performing for a few years after the break up.
obviously the two people that dislike this song are two persons that were dumped when their significant others heard this song and got back together with their true loves.
WOW! This is such an incredible song. It's one of those songs where you just close your eyes and take it in and even if you're not the type of person to ever be in a similar situation, you understand and you feel it. You breathe his desperation and can feel how crazy this is driving him. Asking all these questions about their other lover and if they make them feel the same as he does. He doesn't want to settle for anything less than the love he feels for them, but they're not sure they feel the same. I love how the song ends with him almost whispering "For we are in love" because in that alone you can hear his plea and need to be with this person. I also love this song because never once does it cross my mind that it's terrible that they're both cheating on their others. But instead I focus on what a beautiful thing they could have.
"And I know I make you cry, I know sometimes you wanna die, but do you really feel alive without me...?" I love when songs find their way back to something everyone can relate to.
Its the rawness and passion that he has brought to this song through the clever lyrics that makes it so incredible.. I wish a certain someone would play this to me, he is dark enough and Im just waiting for him to be ready to see my light again, i miss his smell, hes the only one thats ever been brave enough to stand up to me, and with him is the only place i ever felt i belong, the only place I felt alive...
Genius is a word which is thrown around far too often to describe slightly above average these days. NOT in the case of Damien Rice. One of the greatest writers and most emotive vocalists and musicians of our time. Total GENIUS
One of the most beautiful songs stemming from one of the most vile betrayals one can commit...even though this is a song dedicated from one adulterer to another, it moves the heart in amazing ways, much like most of Damien Rice's music.
this is soooo much my situation....that guy and i split up cos he didnt want to open up....and when he understood and called me after some months i was already pregnant...and the shock in his voice 'u couldnt wait..?' we could have had something great, but... thanks Damien Rice for this great song....
one more match point. In I remember he says 'if you're gonna live without me' and in this song he says 'do you really feel alive without me?' i totally agree with what you said. he is genious indeed and a link between his songs does exist. btw your comment was very beautiful!
"and is he dark enough , enough to see your light..." Wow what an amazing line.. I was dark enough, H to see your light, guess you did not like my darkness... We were so good together, before you went and had accidental babies... I miss your smell, and hope you feel like you belong...just mildly free, what about me? What about me...
This song is so amazing, I don't usually comment on videos, but I got dumped 3 months ago, and I was in my car yesterday and this song came on my ipod and I started crying within the first 10 seconds, and couldn't listen to the whole thing as the tears got in the way of my eyes and I couldn't see. It brings back all the emotion I feel for my ex, and how, no matter how hard I try to get over her, I still love her, but i have to accept that she does feel alive without me. I love you
Knowing now who this song was for - Lisa - it bothers the HELL out of me for him telling her to go! He tore her world apart - apologized after, but she has moved on and will NEVER forgive him! It makes it ALL sadder, I have a feeling that no matter how beautiful he is and sounds he could be quite the bastard to love and be with! I suppose that's what makes his music even sadder than his soul tearing words! I still weep with this song - I think we ALL have THAT person this is sung for!
Oh jeez, Damien, he's just amazing. I noticed the colder water thing! But I didn't quite catch the others, so thank you for telling me! His music is just so intricate, all the little memories and references just tie together so well. Ugh he deserves more recognition :/
He is indeed a genius! I always loved these little details in his lyrics, glad someone else noticed that too! Also on 'Amie' "Just another soldier on a road to nowhere" in reference of 'Lonely Soldier', in 'Blowers Daughter' "colder water" in reference of 'Cold Water' also vice-versa at 'Cold Water' "no one's daughter" in reference of 'Blowers Daughter', then 'The Rat within the Grain' "So go play with your piano write a mediocre song" in reference of 'Unplayed Piano'... love them all!
Not everyone can get this song! and that is what i love about it! its not pulled into the mainstream world its not overexposed to the point where it is annoying it is calming it is sad and it gets to you i am so happy that the mainstream world has not ruined this and i hope it wont! a pure genius damien is

I can totally relate to this song ... I wonder if she makes him feel like he belongs and drives him wild all day the same time, like I did... 💔 Heartbreak sucks so bad

"do you feel like you belong".
this is the most hurtful, deepest and purest sentence that one ever can hear from a song...
Sometimes you look from the distance while the one you love goes on living her life without you.And then you think about what you gonna do, "what about me?".And you have no answer.Because this is life, no answer, no reasons, just love.
L'angolo del Capitano I will never forget Vincent

This song... It wrecked me when I discovered it five years ago. Today, it still gives me goosebumps and makes me tear up. My God.
I never thought it was possible to relate to a song this much.
