Found decent copy of Maggot Brain $2 at a flea market. This guy's an old record store owner, he has one section of the store with vg+ stuff priced from discogs etc, but then has a loss-leader bin out front to attract buyers. Most of it is run of the mill VG- stuff, but every once in a while there's a high value record that he didn't spot?. Or maybe he figures us collectors will look through all that junk and might pick up a few extra if he buries a treasure in there sporadically? It seems like every 500 records I go through, I find a gem.
Whenever I watch your videos and hear your stories, I think of two things: 1.) I want to dig through all my old LPs, and 2.) While I am not a record collector, I AM a collector of pre-1980 paperback books and have similar "horror" stories regarding the digging in filthy basements, weird characters, shady deals, etc. Always love watching your videos.
Today, I went to a local antique mall. They have several large record areas, most of them being overpriced to death (think frampton comes alive for 30 bucks), but upstairs are two bins that I swear are a gift from god. Flipped through them and saw so many incredible clean sleeved copies of decently uncommon records all for 10-15$... And in the back I found it. My quest was over. A German side 1 RL Hot Mix LZ2 in VG/VG+ for a decent price. I'm still over the moon about it. Such a worthwhile pressing type to get. The difference is 100% there and it's worth it to look for. But anyways, it's a lesson. Even if the place is usually overpriced or you aren't sure if there are records there, always check! You never know what you might find.
I went to my local antiques mall a couple of years ago, and I found some really cool records. I found a Taiwanese pressing of ELO’s “Time”, an obscure Asian pressing of the Cars “Candy-O”, and a 2009 German reissue of Amon Düül II’s “Phallus Dei”.
Someone I know brought me a bag of records that they found in the skip behind the library. The library had thrown them out because they all had their sticker on the corner. It was original UK Miles Davis, Coltrane and other Jazz records all in great condition. Also someone I know found a record buried in the corner of a barn on a farm in the middle of nowhere completely covered in dust and I cleaned it up, it was a bit water damaged but played fine. It was an original UK The Who sell out, which was pretty cool.
Dillon great video, I laughed out loud several times! Loved hearing your old war stories. Can’t wait for your ‘Top 10 Times I Got Screwed Over’ video 😂!
I used to mow lawns as a teenager. One of my regulars had her garage door open one day and I saw a bunch of records in there. We worked out a deal and I got some in exchange for the work. One of them was a Quadraphonic copy of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". I kept it as my play-copy for a few years, then sold it for $75 once I figured out what Quad LPs were. One of the first albums I sold on eBay in 2000 or so and I'm still going strong after 22 years!
Pretty wild where the record hunt has taken you over the years. Have you already told the getting shot at story in a previous video? Wondering why you skipped it here since you mentioned it at the beginning of this video.
Since having records were very common like the albums everyone had at one time when new, many were thrown out when cds came in the market. But since it was common for everyone to have a record player at home and like having a tv, there are still tons out there to be found and forgotten. Also, most ppl. don’t even know ppl are looking for them and have more value. So before it turns into a solid collecting thing, like comics, vintage toys, sports cards, these are the times to go out there looking and get it for cheap.
Man, thanks for turning me onto Smokes Like Lightning, I just picked up a super nice copy of it off of Discogs and that album is killer! Thanks again for the great channel!
I used to love going to garage sales for records. I remember finding a copy of the "Three Days" b/w "Stop" 12'' single by Jane's Addiction which was pretty cool -- it was my first Jane's single and I've since been slowly finding more ("Been Caught Steeling" box, et cetera), but that first one was a special find.
I found out about Lightnin Hopkins by checking out Lps from the Newark Public Library. John Lee Hooker, Sonny Terry/Brownie McGee. I had already been into Robert Johnson from my Record store Clerk job in a small towns Mt. in the mid 80’s. Never got much culture beamed into through the airwaves, but I began reading about everything I had missed. Then in late 80’s during my college years, CDs had taken over lps and I had a mish-mash shop that I bought 20 records a month for 20 bucks for about 2years. That was some golden years of happenstance and gold striking vinyl.
I found a Decca wideband sitting on the sidewalk in NYC, on 6th Avenue between 12th and 13th street. It was only the Britten Peter Grimes Highlights, but it was in nice shape, and it was the original 1962 original pressing, 'Made in England' at 6 o'clock.
My hang-out back in the day was House of Records (opened 1971 - still in business) out here in Eugene. The guys that worked there said go dumpster diving when the semester ends at the University of Oregon when everybody moves out. Sounded disgusting to me, so I can only dream of what I missed out on. Live and learn, except for me in that instance.
Awesome stories! Brings back so many memories of crazy digs for me over the last 40+ years. I've dealt with more than a few sketchy folks in sketchy situations/locales. The one where I legitimately thought I was going to lose my life, I got an original Waylon Jennings 'At JD's' album out of it. Love your videos!
I found a copy of AC-DCs first album in the recycling facility that I worked in, here in Melbourne, and another copy in a dumper bin , this is about fifteen years ago.
Great video I love hearing stories about finding great records and your stories are awesome. I'm a fairly new record collector and I have a few bootlegs but nothing too rare, one is Black Sabbath Paranoid world tour 1970 on a blood red record. My dad owns a record store in Vancouver BC and he is the most knowledgeable person I know when it comes to records. He knows all the record store owners in and around Vancouver and he always talks about a certain Led Zeppelin bootleg called PB Blues, it was recorded in Vancouver in the early 70's and the sound quality is so good that most people think whoever made it plugged right into the bands sound during the concert. He's had it a few times but I don't live in Vancouver so I've actually never seen or heard it but it is my holy grail bootleg and one day I hope to find it. great videos man I always look forward to watching.
A couple years ago we were having a yard sale. Guys would drive by and yell out their windows asking if we had any albums. Neighbor across the street heard one of the passers by and told me he a box of albums in his garage that were there when he moved in. He asked if I wanted them or wanted to sell them for him. He pulled out a bankers box full of Grateful Dead , Pink Floyd, Donavon, and other misc titles. Covers were dirty with some minor water damage but the vinyl was perfect. Great video and stories!!!
Maggot Brain .... what a find ! My oddest finds.... non peeled Beatles butcher block for 2 bucks at a yard sale .... about 20 78 rpm records in a Christian thrift store , all were 30s and 40s x rated party records and one kkk record on some home town label from the mid west dated 1927 . Long Klucker b side Klucker in the Rain . Odd place for that record stash .
Dillion: thanks for the story! I was at the blueberry hill show 9/4/1970 LA Forum a lot of memories from that show! The funny story was Led Zeppelin played the troubadour a day or two later for like three hours non stop acoustic highway! Cool story
Orpheus records in Arlington Va... (RIP) the guy used to fill His dumpster every day for about a year as the landlord's deadline approached, He was cool and told my buddy and I anything we wanted was ours. We got a lot out of that dumpster.. wished that record store still existed more though!
Greetings from a fellow North Carolina vinyl collector! Great stories! Glad you made it out of that crack house alive, with some Led Zeppelin goodness.
I’ve got a few stories of epic scores, they’re becoming rarer and rarer. One of my personal favorites was a mono promo Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers LP all by itself in a massive collection of TRASH records. The dude just let me have it when I told him it was the only thing I wanted. Another was a Here Is Barbara Lynn LP for $1 at a pawn shop. Also a nice stack of Phil Spector records at a thrift store in Bisbee AZ for $4 each, including Crystals, Ronettes and the Christmas Album.
Two years ago my wife and I visited the Holy Land and on our last full day there, we were in a town just south of Tel Aviv called Jaffa. I buy a lot of CDs (I've got 6,400+) but buying them was not on my mind that day. But there in the center of Jaffa was a flea market and this guy had 5,000+ CDs on tables. Looked thru quickly but when he told me he had another 50,000 at home for sale, we agreed that I would finish my sightseeing, then return to his stall where at 5pm, we'd go over his house. All looking good until I broke a tooth while having lunch and had to go off to find a dentist! File that under "missed opportunities"!
My stories aren't as good as yours, but I did find a yard sale that had just five records for sale. One was a first pressing of Astral Weeks, another was a first press of Electric Mud and the other three were Jim Nabors-style turds. I wanted to ask the backstory, but at the same time, I just wanted to buy them and git.
16:25 such a funny and memorable way to find an OG maggot brain. It's so odd to think how it got there. I'm sure it was misplaced and just ended up in a pile of rubbish but you resucued it lol.
Nothing insanely rare for this story: but in my Local store used bins I found this band called test icicles. Iv been lucky with storage yard auctions. Sometimes on my audio gear hunt, i will search CL or FB market place, i always ask if they have any records for sale, often i went in to buy one item and have left with boxes. Always good to take extra cash too.
Great video man!! I've had things like that happen to me buying antiques from people... They send you pictures of everything you agree to go down there and you get there and someone's Cherry picked it. LoL. That's really cool you found a led Zeppelin bootleg and a damn dumpster.. we were dumpster diving one night and I found a Beatles 45 RPM picture sleeve the 45 was in mint condition in a dumpster
You should write a book about your record digging career. I’d buy it. “And I remember thinking, ‘I could lose my life over this Led Zeppelin record’” could be a chapter on its own lol
Whatsup Dillon, its Cody Hathcock man. Not sure if you remember me from way back when at the cowboy church. My wife and I was talking worship the other day and I brought up memories of your incredible musical gifts!! Had to see if I could find any videos to show her and found this here super cool channel. I have a small collection myself so I will def be following. Love the beard and glad to see your doing well!
Recently dug through the personal collection of a guy who runs a little antique shop. He was a classic rock guy so plenty of ACDC, Alice Cooper, etc, and then an OG US press of Ege Bamyasi by Can. Cut corner, he thought it was a Canned Heat album. Unfortunately, has a 2 inch crack in it. I still paid the $1 and played it anyways, my stylus survived.
When I'm deciding what records to keep interesting circumstances regarding how I found them is a big deciding factor. That being said I found that same Floyd Pompeii bootleg you got back in the 80s and it was relatively uneventful, it just turned up affordable in the local store I went to all the time.
i grabbed two Johnny Cash (promo) albums the other day with yellow mold and mushrooms growing on them (for free). The lower half of the covers were roached but the vinyl on one was NM. They cleaned up great - they got disinfected too.
Found once a 125€ record for 1€ at the thrift store over here in Belgium. And at the same thrift store they do a record fair every year where you can buy top records in grate shape for no money. Unfortunately more and more people know this.
My friend was a mover for a moving company. Frequently when people move out of a house they leave things behind. One thing that is frequently left behind is records. Over the years my friend acquired so many records that were left behind that one entire wall of his warehouse is covered in shelving that holds nothing but records. However he wouldn't sell any of them to me.
Great Stories!!! You Could Write A Book My Friend!!! Kinda Hoping Me And Sonny might Have made it In .. But Then It Was Pretty Normal IOL!!! Peace Brother!!!
I've found lots of $$$ vinyls after it's been 'picked over', mainly because most buyers are looking for the common records. It can be useful to have had it ''picked over'' as the seller assumes the 'good stuff' has gone and you get others even cheaper.
That's where I'm at. I already have the popular albums, I want those 1989-1990 rare vinyl, but still cheap because they're considered the artists low point. Right now all I need is Queens Hot Space ( their worst album) to complete my discography. Luckily, I was smart enough to grab Made In Heaven new back in 95, cause it's a fortune now. Yesterday I found Todd Rundgrens Nearly Human from 89, mint for a buck. Most want Faithfull, somethingAnything, runt etc. I don't mind picked over, what I hate is looking through thrift store Mitch Miller / Manilow stuff for the billionth time. Not that it stops me, I go thrifting everyday and come out with decent stuff sporadically.
Found 15 singles ( 7" ) on COOK records ( Trinidad ) Calypso .from 1960, 1961 in thriftstore in Denmark last week ! Probably not played since the 60'ies How likely is that ? :)
You probably get asked this question a lot so I apologize, but why do you keep the actual record outside of the original fold? Is it just to access it easier, or? I'm new to collecting and was wondering if that would be a better way to preserve the vinyl. Thanks!
@@jimmycampbell78 Ah okay that makes sense. The ring that become visible on the sleeve presumably from the compression over time I'm guessing? Thanks for the reply
Good stories, the unexpected or bizarre finds are the ones we remember for longer. Churches in the USA are places serious diggers should investigate more, not that one wants to find an Eric Clapton - ''the devil''!
Do you sell bootlegs at your shop? Back in the 90s the FBI raided a monthly record show I used to go to and arrested a few of the sellers there for having bootlegs. It's the only time I've heard of something like that happening.
I've had two jukeboxes. I got them at separate times, so I guess I was a slow learner. I was so glad to get rid of them. They'd be so much cooler if they weren't 400 lbs.
I am going into semi-retirement. I have 6 boxes of records, some comedy and some 45's,.. some punk, rock, country, metal, if you come to Illinois. Let me know, 40 miles from Chicago Not alot of gem's,... Yet they have to find a new home. Tommy
Was just wondering if that Led Zeppelin album was reeking of that odor that you were talking about when you walked into that crack house! Hopefully not 😁

I found an original Polydor mono label Cream Wheels of Fire in a phone repair shop

Great stories! Would love to hear some "one that got away stories" --- stuff you had to walk away from and why!
Now that's what I'm talking bout fun and crazy stories! Thank you very cool 😎
Some great stories there! You should consider writing a book!
Unipak of Maggot Brain with crisp corners from a trash bag? Sometimes miracles do come true.

I bet nobody has a great memory about when they downloaded an album. It's all about the hunt man.
Cool ass stories! I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Very cool!
I found a vg++ small ring first press of Samhain initium at a goodwill for $1. 😳😳😳😳
Greetings from a fellow North Carolina vinyl collector! Great stories! Glad you made it out of that crack house alive, with some Led Zeppelin goodness.
I love these stories; I certainly wouldn't want to meet you when you're livid!
My name is jon, i really enjoy hearing those stories.Keep it up! i really enjoy your channel.
I’ve got a few stories of epic scores, they’re becoming rarer and rarer. One of my personal favorites was a mono promo Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers LP all by itself in a massive collection of TRASH records. File that under "missed opportunities"!
Nice transition into a heavenly montage. And God blessed you with records. I would never meet someone at 1 AM. I go to sleep at 10
Gosh I love this!!!! Thank U for sharing your stories with us. :-)
Very cool stories!!Thanks!
21:31 wow awesome
22:30 thank you for rescuing the hidden gems in the garbage. Not everyone has eagle eyes 🦅
I really enjoyed this video and your other videos as well. keep up the good work!
Nothing insanely rare for this story: but in my
Local store used bins I found this band called test icicles. My best friend in high school and myself were obsessed with this music cause it was so bonkers. I had all but forgot about it and there it was for like 7 bucks. I still hold that one very close.
I have a small collection myself so I will def be following. Love the beard and glad to see your doing well!
great stories. thanks for sharing!
Shot at?? Did you tell that story? lol
10:17- "Just tell me which dumpster" LOL OMG I started laughing so freakn' hard when you said that lol.
Really enjoy your videos would you ship to New Zealand?
Bro, these stories are crazy!! You need to write a book LOL
Great stories! Thanks for sharing.
mr. Finglish (Bäd English Recs)
good stories my frend I wonder how many times you sead records 👍😀👌🏼
Good luck finding any Fates Warning , Savatage , Voivod albums lol
I still get a lot of great hauls from Craigslist up here in Canada
Great stories, great finds! You never know!!
When I'm deciding what records to keep interesting circumstances regarding how I found them is a big deciding factor. That being said I found that same Floyd Pompeii bootleg you got back in the 80s and it was relatively uneventful, it just turned up affordable in the local store I went to all the time.
That story about finding it in the rain late at night was straight out of a movie. Also yeah I would totally watch a top ten screw overs video
i grabbed two Johnny Cash (promo) albums the other day with yellow mold and mushrooms growing on them (for free). The lower half of the covers were roached but the vinyl on one was NM. They cleaned up great - they got disinfected too.

My last dig, I scored Blueberry Hill black wax and Bonzo's B-Day in black tmoq. Definitely not a crack house or a dumpster though. Just an old rocker.
Dylan have you compared the RL Zeppelin II to the # 3/4ips reel?
Ok, now I definitely want the “Top 10 times I’ve been screwed over buying records” stories.
How do you find all these sick places to look wow! Anyone know any apps people use to sell collections?
Great Stories!!! You Could Write A Book My Friend!!! Kinda Hoping Me And Sonny might Have made it In .. But Then It Was Pretty Normal IOL!!! Peace Brother!!!

Yes I have too, but many times a seller who’s selling in bulk just wants to unload all the junk on one sucker. I don’t like being that sucker 🤣
@@noblerecords Swings and roundabouts, now you have a store you need a well stocked dollar bin/s.
It’s vanals not vinyls
I feel that so heavily. Soooo many people have shit taste most of the good stuff sticks around for a while
I illustrate books. I’d be glad to work with you if you ever write one. Something to think about. Seriously.
You find any Bruse Hacck? Or Sun Ra records???
Found 15 singles ( 7" ) on COOK records ( Trinidad ) Calypso .from 1960, 1961 in thriftstore in Denmark last week ! Probably not played since the 60'ies How likely is that ? :)
Great post Dylan
Thanks!
dude you rock! Loved this one!
Thanks!
Love this video
You probably get asked this question a lot so I apologize, but why do you keep the actual record outside of the original fold? Is it just to access it easier, or? I'm new to collecting and was wondering if that would be a better way to preserve the vinyl. Thanks!
I believe it is to avoid ringwear on the sleeve.
@@jimmycampbell78 Ah okay that makes sense. The ring that become visible on the sleeve presumably from the compression over time I'm guessing? Thanks for the reply
Hi dillon. I have led zepp. Album called white summer. Bootleg.. what do you think. Best regards from james in scotland. Great vids.
Good stories, the unexpected or bizarre finds are the ones we remember for longer. Churches in the USA are places serious diggers should investigate more, not that one wants to find an Eric Clapton - ''the devil''!
YOU’VE BEEN SHOT AT? Uhh… do tell!
3 times 🤣 3 separate occasions
You went into a crack house for a Led Zeppelin record?
Bro........That is both amazing and terrifying at the same time.
Great stories.........
What a great video. Haha the crack house delivers the goods… fed your addiction
Great stories
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Offer up is so sketchy Here in DC that is almost all stolen stuff, at least for bicycles...
I'd love to hear a top ten screwed over list
I once found 2 Free [the band] LPs for free, leaning up against a tree while out walking. VG+/VG+.
How eliminate odor from vinyl covers, dont see a video about that
I am going into semi-retirement.
I have 6 boxes of records, some comedy and some 45's,.. some punk, rock, country, metal, if you come to Illinois. Let me know, 40 miles from Chicago
Not alot of gem's,... Yet they have to find a new home.
Tommy
AWESOME LED ZEPPELIN RECORDS.
Was just wondering if that Led Zeppelin album was reeking of that odor that you were talking about when you walked into that crack house! Hopefully not 😁
I'd love to see the 10 times you've been screwed over video
Well they used to say Clapton is GOD!! So I guess it really isn’t surprising to find it in a church!
Crackhouse! Thats a really funny story.
I suspect he was from Chicago.
Top 10 Times You’ve Been Screwed Over!
You've been shot at while digging for records? You know you're not supposed to do it without their permission, right? LOL!
