This video was perfect for helping me replace my Ford F150 ignition cylinder (which broke) and reuse the key that worked with the vehicles PATS system. If you are careful, you can do this job very quickly. Thanks for ;posting. This saved me time and money!!!

Great vid I had the problem of a broken ignition lock & had to replace it with a new one. Of course the new one came with new keys & my truck wouldn't start, I followed the directions on this vid & I made my old key to fit my new lock & my truck turned right on. Thanks so much bud

    Great Video, thanks!
The video does not show clearly what is needed to remove the check ball, releasing the key chamber from the outer case.
You have to turn the key all the way to the start position stop. Then use a pick to push the checkball into it's spring seat as you turn the key chamber past this stopping point.
Save the checkball for reinstalling, see below I discuss this.
I just did this to my 1996 Ford Econoline Van. This is the same exact replacement I got from Auto Zone, $26. My vehicle is not new enough to have the chip in the key. Not sure if the one in the video does.
FYI: My original key and some of the slugs showed wear. This may be why mine no longer worked.
If you rekey the new lock, I suggest you try to use the new lock's slugs of any that are the same number-code-cut.
I wrote the numbers and their positions down on the slugs of both the new and old lock(the numbers are inscribed on the slugs and if worn off on your old slugs, you can compare it to others to see what number it is.
4 of my original slugs were stamped "4" and none of the new lock slugs were number "4"'s so those slugs I had to reuse.
Maybe I can buy some "4" slugs and replace them later.
It looks like if I wanted to replace all my door locks and the ignition, parts would cost over $100 and I don't want to have the ignition a different key than the doors, although that would not be that bad of an option of your original key or the lock slugs are worn out.
The video does not show how to reinstall the check ball.
I found to do this, temporarily remove the push button ball by lifting the arm spring with your finger nail.
Insert the key and then insert the key assembly into the outer case.
Align the check ball's spring seat over where you removed the push button ball.
Drop the check ball in and use open needle nose pliers tip to push the ball down into it's spring seat while turning the key chamber back into it's start position.

Underneath the steering wheel you will see the four screws that hold the plastic piece up there. But the top right one you'll see a hole. You stick a small screwdriver up there and feel around for the little ball lever and push it up to release the key cylinder. I have gotten that far and am looking into replacing the little pieces to use the original key instead of trying to reprogram the new key. That way the old key will work with the ignition and the door. I have a 2001 Ford F150.

just completed this task. need to add that the ball bearing check ball has to be aligned with the button for removing the lock when reinstalling. You also have to push in the button and finish pushing into the lock.

    Sir
I only have one key to my trunk right now. So I can't recode another key to it, unless I go to the dealer and that cost $$ if I order another cylinder with two keys cut to original key can I recode the other keys then??

Is this how most cylinders are constructed? I'm only asking because I've just watched one or two vids with guys claiming that you can't get in to these units, when you have just demonstrated that clearly, you can. I have a key sticking in a Honda and I'm wondering if I can do the same. Providing I can get the sticking cylinder out that is. Thanks.

Can you disassemble the cylinder and keep the original Pass 3 GM chip and replace the key and slugs? So you're not fooling around trying to flash the BCM?

I have a slight dilemma while i was doing this for a friends Caravan, he wanted to help/learn, but he's not too bright, so i thought i explained to him how its done and had him hand me the tumblers as I asked for each one by the number, hell I won't need to even write them down. Righhhhht.
Well turns out, he had handed me, one @ a time, ALL #2's, he thought when i called out a number, he thought thats how MANY i needed & I should have got that w/ the 1st round when I said "gimme a 2" & he handed me 2 tumblers, I said, No bud, I need em one @ a time, and he had this cunfoozed look. Well I dremeled off the case (Had another) and got everything out and now i'm trying to do this on the blind, is this going to be like pissing up a rope??? ;) I have the 8 original tmblers and they consist of:
    #1's = two
    #2's = three
    #4's = three
Was hoping there was a # on the key, its a black Dodge key (non-chipped) but there is nothing.
If somebody has gone through this already and had any suggestions I'm all ears. and would appreciate the assist, Thanks

how can I reset my Pats security system when I change my key in my ignition

  • @GlassAnvil
    @GlassAnvil 6 лет назад

    decent video but incomplete
you dont show anything about that tiny ball bearing and spring that locks the cylinder into place. W/o it when you put it back together youre going to be able to pull the cylinder out of the lock everytime you use it...
