Well I did this to my fox as well still waiting on the fittings and hose to show up.
This pump was also on Mazda 3's. I went to the junkyard today because they have a Volvo out there and someone had already snatched the pump. Did some looking around online, thinking no way Ford engineered and manufactured this part and ONLY put it on Volvo. Found a 2006 Mazda 3 and it had the same pump.
Great to know!
Rumor has it that pump pulls a lot of amps like over 30, so hope you have a stout alternator.
Yeah inshould have mentioned that too but these vids get long quick. Mine is an upgraded 340 amp
As always, great info with details. This is way better than a weekly video that shows nothing like many others. Have to balance life priorities and family. Great fab work as well!
I did the Volvo pump this spring. It feels great, super easy to do. All the ford oem lines off my 86 mustang fit the pump.
NICE! Man good to know. I had no idea the lines from ford fit this. Glad to know it worked out too! I want to do this on my 86, but building this 79 is priority
You should look into the 2020+ explorer hybrids. They have an ac compressor that is not driven by the engine but by a electric motor. It looks just as simple electrically as the p/s pump.
Innnnteresting. Im going to look into this. Talk about hiding an AC setup. I image that pump would use a GOOD amount of amps. But hell all EVs are hybrids would have a similar setup Id assume. Thanks for the tip!
@@HOUSEOFDULA @302hobronco Unfortunately the electric AC compressors on hybrids and EVs are powered by the high voltage system and are not compatible with the 12v systems on typical cars. There are however 12v compressors on the market but they are exorbitantly expensive, $3k and up. Also they don't come close to supporting the BTUs of a belt driven compressor.
Thanks for the cool video. I’m curious about the power draw for the pump. I’m thinking this would be a cool way to get power steering to my shoebox ford with a flathead.
Man I'l like to know this too, I'll test it once its wired up with fluid.
I'm going to have to unfollow you!! Just by following your videos on "how to's" I have already blown my "low budget build" like 4 times over. Now it is very tempting to go and do this on my 93...
🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha, HEY...nowhere does my channel say "budget" I dont think....maybe the older vids. This car? wont be "budget" but also nothing an average guy couldnt build. Stick around! Dont leave yet.
We’re Foxbody owners, we no progress is slow. Hell we’re all watching these videos instead of finishing our projects. Lol
lol same, I need to get off the computer and get back in the garage!
Have you been feeding that boy miracle grow? Looks like he’s grown a lot since the last time I saw him. I have seen where people have used an electric steering module from a Saturn for cobra kit cars. Don’t know if you know about that or not or if you considered it? It would do away with all hydraulics as it is an electric motor that adds assist to the steering column. I have a Foxbody engine set up in a 53 F100 and the power steering pump whined from day one. I bought some stuff at AutoZone that worked miracles on it. I don’t remember the name of it, but it is a two-part fluid and you mix the two parts together and pour it in the reservoir.
Man yes lol hes gotton big. Hes stout and almost my height at 9! I looked into the electric columns but already had my mind set on this…one reason was to keep options open for hydro boost. Lemme know if you can recall that product name, im interested.
@@HOUSEOFDULA Bar's Leaks High Mileage Power Steering Repair. It’s got 2 colored fluids in it and it made all groans and growls stop.
So the can bus wiring you not going to use but the ford looks good
Thank you! Yeah might not use it, however a company makes a kit that uses GPS instead of a VSS, this will control the pressure at difference speeds.
How many Amps, "continuous and peak", does it draw? They used to say the average PS pump stole approximately 5 HP pretty continuously. So what will your alternator have to produce now and how many more HP will that take??
Hey man. So I need to really rate it myself, I don't know unfortunately....Ive been told these need an 80AMP fuse, and can run between 7amps to 79amps depending on conditions and load, so you need a good efficient alternator for sure, especially if you have this and electric fans. HP comparison? Man Thats a great question, and one for someone with more skills and tools for myself. I dont thinks folks would do this mod for a HP gain per-se, but more like myself to free up engine bay real estate, or has a motor without a hydraulic pump. If I had to guess both setups would need about 5-7hp to spin, for an average power steering pump. So likely a wash HP wise, BUT that same 5-7hp would also provide electric t the vehicle and fans...whereas running both your using 5-7 each, for the alternator and the PS pump. Im willing to be the ford pump on these foxes uses more than 8hp as well.
@@HOUSEOFDULA My line of thought is that it needing an 80 AMP fuse/breaker means it can get very close to drawing that much power normally. If not, I can't see the need for something that big!! Of course that could be a monster draw at lock. (We have all seen people who don't know better hang on the steering wheel hoping to make a turn rather than back up and not take a chance), so it could be for that reason, I just don't know enough about them.. A hydraulic pump will stall and slip the belt in most cases. I have seen them stall an engine while being, umm, less than intelligent!! lol.. I'd sure like to know what the typical draw is! So going from (simple numbers), a 60A to a 90A alternator means a lot more HP stolen from the engine. The big question is how many amps typical draw and for how long would that typically rise??
Aje is a great company. That’s who I went with for my front end I drive my fox like a road car and so far the kmember is holding up being a drag style I was expecting cracks or bends with sticky front tires but she’s good maybe when my grip gets serious I’ll swap to MM unit, that’s if I have to .
Good to hear this! Hope it will hold up to road driving and wide fronts vs skinny's
Uno!!! Omg Connor has gotten so big! Time goes by fast. Great job with that eps setup!
lol MAN isnt he!? Man time really has flown, being he was 2 or 3 when I bought my 86 and starting the channel.
Im soo glad you keep the stock airbox, it looks soo clean and original and im such a sucker for stock looks, also HOLD THE FRICK UP PARTNER! The wiper motor for the Mustang is hidden behind the fender??? *UPDATE* you said the Wiper motor is a mod and not original, still freaking clean and cool!
Yessir! I cant take credit for the idea, just the execution. I have a video on it.
Nice I like this setup! Does it need the cooling pipe that runs in front of the radiator like the factory setup?
Sup bud! Late reply, shame on me! lol So....I dont really know, I chose not to although I could easily run it in the radiator's AT cooler. Im hoping this setup runs cool because of the efficiency. If I ever road race it, I think it would be wise to run a cooler on it.
The steering shaft is splined and can be adjusted on it. I have the mm shaft and that's exactly how I did mine
The Maximum motorsports one is, but not the AJE one. Its slotted so can only rotate 180
The top of the reservoir where the fill cap is - was that also from a Volvo or something else?
Stock from the volvo. You can find both used, some with remote reservoir and some with filler built on the reservoir
@@HOUSEOFDULA thanks dude. That’s a slick setup!
Awesome video thanks
Thanks man!
Wow, that's pretty nice using an electric hydraulic pump. I was thinking you put in an actual electric rack like I have in my 16 GT. That would be a project! Congrats on the new property.
Thanks man I appreciate it. yes, this way it gives me options to use Hydro boost. If this brake booster doesn’t work good enough.
Nice work. I'm definitely going to have use ur power steering hose setup. I'm using the stock high pressure power steering hose and it's too bulky in the engine.
This is awesome!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. I’ve been keeping up with this build. I’d like to do this engine swap to my 1985 SVO. 😊
Thank you! And yes would be perfect for an SVO build
@@HOUSEOFDULA yes sir, that’s what I’ve been thinking, too. But as for now, the 351w will have to do. lol 😂
@@floydmarseeii4007 I am swapping my SVO right now, but with a coyote.
@@venomfastback nice!!👍🏻👍🏻
I’ve already swapped my SVO to a 94-351w roller cam engine. I’d love to do a Coyote swap, but this car is going to stay 351. Maybe I can find another 🦊 to do that too.
I've been curious about that electric power steering, thanks looks good Mike!
Will this electric Volvo/Ford power steering pump support a hydro boost for the brakes?
Yes, or at least Ive read guys feed both with it without issues. That’s one reason why I wanted to go that route so that in case, if I wanted to go to hydroboost, I could.
Love seeing the progress on this thing. Such a cool project.
I’m in your boat though. Been working on a gen 1 lighting project all summer. Bought some property. Breaking grind on a new house. Raising 2 kids. Working full time. I’m lucky to get a few hours to work on my project. I can’t imagine trying to film it all too. 😳
Amen man! Glad others see it. I’m a busy guy
Hey you have your high and low pressure hoses mixed up ask me how I know 😆
HA! I fixed this, we met at LMR too right?
@HOUSE OF DULA No unfortunately I'm way out in Virginia. I'm doing the same swap also just with the 6r80 auto
What is the correct layout for the high pressure hose?
@StangAddiction88 The blue hose which is the high pressure hose is suppose to be on the bottom and the low pressure hose up top.
@musclecargarage8882 Thank you for the reply! Since the hose comes in 6 foot sections, can I use the rest of the high pressure hose for the low pressure size also? I know it's overkill but I'm not gonna do anything else with the extra high pressure hose. Thanks man!
Can you still run hydro boost brakes with the electric pump?
I personally don't have direct experience with that HOWEVER I know folks who are doing it without any issues. They are feeding both power rack and hydroboost. In fact I went this route in case the stock booster was not large enough and I wanted to run hydroboost.
They make a kit with controller that has a gps on it so the pump speed varies with the car’s speed (high pressure at low speed and lower pressure at high speed).
Yessir they do. Found it on Ebay. Really neat idea and will likely later down the road integrate it.
Builds take a while. Especially when they are as clean as yours! I thought about going that route with power steering. I ultimately decided to use the epas column from a prius and run a manual rack.
Yessir, and not trying to rush it. I was sooo close to going with that epas system as well, ultimately went this route
Do you know if your able to T off the pump to run hydroboost or would you need a separate one for that?
No you can. Should be plenty of pressure for that. I dont have personal experience doing that, but Ive heard and heard guys that run the volvo pump and loop it from the rack to the hydro boost setup with no issues.
Man, love the content, super impressed with what you can do in your garage versus a full blown shop.
Quick question, what mufflers are you running on the 86? I've got an on3 setup on my 89 and was told that I can't run chambered mufflers. Right now I'm straight piped but I am not a fan of how it sounds. I appreciate any info you have.
Well lol late repy. Sorry man, better than never I suppose. Its a magnafow setup, BUT right now its dumped pre muffler under the driver seat. I too am not a fan of it dumped. And I think Im going to ditch the magnaflow for your standard turbo style "tube" baffled muffler.
@@HOUSEOFDULA no worries, you're a busy man. I appreciate the response, I was thinking about trying a straight thru 3" in place of the y pipe portion from on3 y pipe kit. I am starting to get used to the straight pipe sound though.
great video, awesome to see you rollin' with UNO!
I should have NAMED IT UNO! lol 1st year fox, nod to my son. I like it. Needs vanity plates "UNOFOX"
You're giving me ideas about creating MY version of a mid 80s SVO :)
Thanks for the video. Going to use it on my Lightning Coyote Setup
Lightning coyote swap? NEAT, boosted of course right?

Do you have the part number for the high pressure fittings?
Shoot i forgot to add those! Thanks. EAR-130106ERL www.summitracing.com/parts/EAR-130106ERL
Thank you
Nice work Mike!
Hellfire Club! Awesome shirt! You and your son into Stranger Things? My daughter and I are fully hooked on that show!
Ok…. Back to Foxbody stuff!!
LOVE IT. LOOOVE IT. Were nerds here at the Dula house.
Looking good. I went Summit Brand PTFE hose and various fitting for my power steering rerouting and found that Summit fittings only work with their hoses. One thing of note, I have a SN95 (98 GT) and also used the MM rack fittings but noticed when you were hooking up, you put the high pressure on the top fitting and the low pressure on the bottom when in fact, that should be reversed. Is your specific setup requiring you to flip it? I’d hate to see you blow the seals on that new rack.
No sir not specific and glad you brought it up. I guess the assumption was top was high, bigger fitting. I bought the rack used and didnt even think about now that both are -6 they could be reversed. I really appreciate you mentioning this.
Did this to my 86GT a couple of years ago to get rid of that ford whine. I love it. Haven't had any issues with it. You may want to put the exciter wire on a switch in the cabin though. Other wise the pump kicks on in about 3 seconds and it's pulling a lot of amps about the same time you turn the key to start the car. I had it wired to hot when key on (not hot while starting), but it still kept blowing my fuse on the battery box. Also, make sure you wire those leads to the battery. Otherwise that pump causes crazy lights blinking and engine surge. 😅 Found that out the hard way.
Lol all good point sir wonder if i can put it on a delay, though a switch would be easy
this is totally awesome, man.
Thank you
Updates on this project?
Coming! I promise. lol Weve had a little bit of health issues, I had covid, throw on the hoildays and it slowed down a bit. More content coming soon. Hopefully next week. Filming today, and this weekend sub frame connectors install and more updates on the PS pump.
Oh man. Hate to hear about Covid. Hopefully you are 100% better soon. I know a lot of people say it takes awhile to get full strength back ( depending on how severe the case). Take care of yourself and wishing you and your family an awesome New Year.
Take your time. Very kool build that is much different then what everyone else is doing.
Appreciate that
On the older 2.3 lima engines you can run the volvo twin cam head from what ive seen!
Interesting!
Egobruise...still cracks me up!! Can't wait to see it run man!!
Lol is what it is now, it’s stuck!
Thanks for such a helpful video , keep up the hard work ! #dontstopwrenchingonfoxbodies
AMEN! Thanks man!
Your Welcome!!!
Lol thanks man!
Awesome work!!!
Thank you!
Any thoughts on how to cool the pump motor so that it does not overheat and fail after prolonged use?
Good question…really honestly didn’t think about it, i suppose any heat exchange cooler built for power steering would work
@@HOUSEOFDULA I am sure you could probably figure out a way to wire it so that the pump is only actually running when you are turning the steering wheel rather than having the pump run constantly
You are a pioneer.
Man many others have done this! I wish I could take the cred but this has been done any many other foxes
