Turns out that octopodes are NOT colorblind. While they don't have color-sensing cells in the eyes, they are able to use chromatic aberration (different colors refract slightly differently) to distinguish colors. And chromatic aberration is enhanced by their weird-looking W-shaped pupils.
Funniest comment by Felix Starkadder · Macquarie University: "Like James Scacco, I do not eat cephalopods and haven't for thirty years after an amazing underwater encounter similar to this one. I like and respect them too much. Fortunately I hold sheep in total contempt so lamb is ok."
Their skin dot colors remind me of the comic book coloring technique called the "Ben Day process". It was a brilliant way to make a range of colors with just a limited color pallet. Like if you wanted an orange color, but only had red and yellow, you'd print red polka dots on top of a yellow background.
I love the idea that basically we don't know what we are looking at or what we are seeing. We don't have a clue and can only remain amazed and astounded!
I've watched this five times so far, and even though I KNOW the octopus is there in the first segment, I still can't see it until it changes color and glides away.
Watch 4:16 on to see the camouflage trick happening. Absolutely Incredible! And octopi have been doing this all along. I never knew! And this all takes place in about 5 feet of water. Who knew? What else are we missing when we go in the ocean?
You're a fool. It takes INTELLIGENCE to create living creatures, and on Judgment Day you will discover you spent your entire life believing a lie. Grow up.
Mo Jo Evolution simply results from minor changes over long periods of time accumulating into larger changes. These cephalopods have evolved a survival trait over an incredibly large amount of time in order to evade predators, as they have little other defenses. The intelligence of a higher power is not involved here at this stage, but rather evolution via natural selection, through which certain traits are selected for, like this ability to produce such effective camouflage. These creatures, among all others that have been studied, show evidence of evolution, suggesting that evolution is the root cause of biodiversity on earth.
They're colour blind but can look at something, MASH the colour, texture and form without touching... maybe they AREN't colour blind? the skin can't change by itself!
imagine a human beign with the power of every animal...flying,cloaking,electricity,spit ink, poison bite, amazing speed & so on...the recipe for a super hero :D
the correct term is octopuses, but due to hypercorrection (an over-abundance of grammar nazis and a dearth of grammar knowledge) octopi is still kinda valid. octopodes is really more of a joke term based on the fact that even if you were to pronounce it like it were latin, it wouldn't be pronounced octopi.
I'm afraid you're reversing the whole thing. “Octopi” is not valid because octopus is not a Latin term but a (old) Greek one. The correct plural in Greek would be “octopodes”. It is most definitely not a joke. Nowadays octopuses is the preferred word - exactly for avoiding discussions like this I presume ;) - but if you like to sound… uhh… more intelligent it's always best to use the correct form: octopodes. (I've studied both Latin and Greek but look it up if you don't believe me)
That's amazing. God has given them something unique in their creation. But He has also given us animals to use and eat, and I won't stop eating octopus because of this knowledge.
Could you make this any more condescending and annoying? Why would you make a video with such an obviously scripted annoyingly voiced video? Changing from female to male constantly isn't clever, it's really stupid.

First impressions: that's amazing. Second thoughts: EVERYTHING IN MY HOUSE COULD BE AN OCTOPUS!

This is fantastic footage, and a great explanation. Cephalopods are amazing.
Yeah Dr Leo u give a fantastic comment, l'm sahr Mortatay your friend in Sierra Leone China Friendship Hospital

Indeed, said with perfect simplistic clarity.
I've watched this five times so far, and even though I KNOW the octopus is there in the first segment, I still can't see it until it changes color and glides away.
This video is something else. I would love to have been underwater to see this too.
Hope you like this.
Janet
this is so cool! I subscribed. Keep doing what you're doing!! :)
I've been sent back in time to make Sure Dr. Trask doesn't see this video. It'll be all he needs to make the drones of the future!

The achievements of evolution are mind boggling.

+Mo Jo lol sit down. When science talks, religion should be quiet. Reality > fairy tales
Just makes them more adorable.

Camouflage like a boss! I actually thought this video was horse putty.
What's the music soundtrack in this video btw? I love it.
AMAZING VIDEO!
Is this in a garden, in the shade?
that is fantastic, thanks for sharing
I get how it can change colors, but how did it achieve that spiky, frilly texture?
bio-mimicry suggests you study the octopus to develop a 'cloaking device'
Wow, did someone just use the word "awesome" correctly? Great video, maybe one of your best.
Anyone know where you can find out more about the idea at the end - the study of what we see vs what is? Has the scientist chap looked into it more?
Probably the most under rated animal.
Wow this is, awesome!
hey wasn't there some couple that wrote a book on the psychology of optical illusions? Sleight of Mind or something?
and this is why my ideal super power would be to change into animals. animals can do ANYTHING!!
Fascinating!
I'm not a scientist but this is fascinating work.
If you think about some of the implications of what is said in the video, it's actually kind of freaky..

One day we'll figure out how to make clothes like this and the fashion industry is going to go wild
Or the military
Nature is AWESOME!
thats because they see and feel the world differently than us.
Awesome awesomeness!
Jaron Lanier brought me here!
Incredible!
Just marvellous :)

Thats definately a nopefish
Skulls!!! :O
Trippy.
incredible
reminds me of mgs4
Whats the name of the song?
The military should do some research based on such natural examples that actualy work, rather than phylosophing and trying to work on some Sci-Fi BS.
How did you find the octupus?
Amazing
Such a cool video, but I found the voice switching very distracting.
18 people couldn't find the octopus.
cepholaPOG
Fantaaaaaaaaaaaaaaastic

Great information. Really don't like the presentation though.

All I see is calamari
magnificiently detailed HOAX.

I agree. The science is awesome, the narration not so much.
