Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his RUclips videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

I’m really impressed with your handle trick. I own this reel but in better cosmetic condition. I am a fan of vintage Roddy reels as I have a few in my collection. There’s something wrong with that oscillation block and axle shaft. My reel is not like this. That pinion gear with the clip can be a pain in the butt! I’ve found these Roddy reels to be quite solid reels. I have not used all the ones I own yet. I’ve never taken mine apart to the extent that you have because I did not need to. That AR claw and spring was a difficult chore. You did very well with that pinion. I’m glad it went togethe so well. - Chris

Chris, one thing I’ve learned working on these old reels is that even though they made subtle changes to a reel, the manufacturers tended to leave the model number alone. This might be an earlier example of the reel than yours. It appeared to me that the crosswind block could have been from a different model reel but was adapted to fit this reel. I say that because of the dual screw holes in it. The second hole had never been drilled all the way through. It was as though it had been cast with two holes but only one had drilled out to fit the axle shaft. This could have been done to use up crosswind blocks left over from another reel design that Roddy had left over. All of this is speculation on my part. It doesn’t appear to be a field repair.
That anti reverse claw certainly gave me a lot of trouble. I think the last time I had that much trouble was working on the jack plate spring of the Dam 700B. I’m wonder if I’m loosing my touch. It looked a lot easier than it was when I was taking it apart.
