  • I finally finished the video of my home system. Showing the shallow well pump we use to water our plants and any other water needs we have outdoors. Currently my temporary garden hose system has lasted almost 3 years. I plan on running 3/4" PVC around the house. Currently the pump turns of if pressure drops below 40 psi and stops at 60 psi which is perfect for my uses so far. Also I added another valve to flush the toilet off this system too. Seattle just made that legal and this water stays very clear.

You should look into underground irrigation style sprinklers they can be found typically cheap online. Rain Bird being one of the best brands. The water usage is more uniform and the flow rates, depending on the sprinkler type, Can be ideal for shallow well storage. We installed some apartment buildings, where we funnel rain from the roof to a cistern in the basement. Then pump from there. You will need a decent filter but lots of underground irrigation can handle a bit of trash in the lines. heck even put the sprinkler heads on a hose spike if you don't want to bury it all. You can run multiple heads at a time too. We also use the poly pipe (the same kind you used for the cabin rain systems feed to the sink) in the ground up here in Canada instead of PVC. It's easier to work with, no glue and holds up better to freezing if some dummy didn't blow it out in the fall. Keep updating. I'm curious where this goes, great job so far. Inspiring for sure.

Very nice. Good to see you back making videos. Looking forward to the boat channel as well. I am planning on doing a rainwater collection system as well so this is excellent information.

nice system. see the inside diameter of those store bought garden hose manifolds with built in ball valves - you could make up some manifolds from 3/4" t-fittings & you'll have double the pressure at the sprinkler.

+jasonmushersee Good idea, that is exactly what I would like to do eventually. The hoses are ugly. This system would be perfect for anyone with a pre-installed sprinkler system.

SolarBurrito do you have a video from the start on this project? I like your set up & would like to understand if it would fit my needs. I would be pulling water from pond to either a large tank or some like yours. Thanks

all that work to grow grass... Grow some blueberries or native plants for bird habitat... Use the water to flush the toilets. Plumb a separate line to your toilet or washing machine. If you have no rain water, then either add a minimum of tap water to the tank or hook up the machine or toilet to the city tap again.

Water is a useful thing. You can do whatever you wish with it. Growing grass was the first thing I needed to do. This is the city btw.

Sweet! Thanks for sharing. You have the exact system I want to install under the cabin this year. If possible, can you list some of the plumbing parts you need going from the valve on the water tote to your pump. i.e. Pipe size, couplings, etc.

+The Cedar Workshop 2" from the IBC totes then it needs to step down to whatever your pump inlet is. Mine was 1"1/4 I believe. The system look complicated but if you watch a few videos on well pumps you can get the idea. Also there are pumps that have a tank built in. The trick is you need a solid beefy PVC check valve in front of your pump inlet. It will not work without it.

Where did you buy the strainer? One inch or two inch?

I found it on ebay. Hard to find. Was a weird size, maybe 1 1/4" but they have lots of selection.
