Mayura is a 1975 Indian Kannada-language historical drama film, directed by Vijay. It is one of the most popular films of acclaimed Kannada actor Dr Rajkumar, who plays the role of Prince Mayurasharma of the Kadamba dynasty, the earliest native kingdom to rule over what is today the modern state of Karnataka. The film depicts the life of Mayura, a Brahmin youth, as he discovers his royal heritage and realizes his destiny of ascending to the throne of the then-Pallava kingdom.
Based on a novel of the same name by Devudu Narasimha Sastri, the film is notable for its various scenes filmed inside and around the famous Mysore Palace. The movie was also the last movie to be shot inside the Mysore Palace. The movie saw a theatrical run of 30 weeks. It is considered by many as a symbol of Kannada pride. The movie was dubbed in Telugu as Mahaveera Mayura.
K. V. Vijayendra Prasad, father of S. S. Rajamouli and the storywriter of Baahubali: The Beginning had revealed that he was inspired by this movie while writing the story for Baahubali. He had further revealed that the core story line - about the hero not knowing his birth secret that he belongs to a royal family and lives in isolation in a village - was also inspired by this movie.
Plot : The film opens in Kanchi with Mayura, a Brahmin youth challenging an arrogant wrestler and defeating him. Mayura had never been formally trained and had only learned techniques of wrestling by observing other wrestlers. As a Brahmin, he was required to study Vedas, yet he was deeply interested in martial arts and after this wrestling encounter, Ranga Jetti (M. P. Shankar), the premier wrestler in Kanchi, takes him under his wing and trains him. After becoming proficient in all the martial arts, one day, while observing the training of Pallava princes, Mayura accidentally gets into a fight with and gives a thrashing to Vishnugopa (Vajramuni), the Pallava prince, thereby earning his enmity.
After this, Mayura has to flee Kanchi as per the advice of Ranga Jetti, to escape from pursuing Pallavas. He also then learns that he is in fact the son of Raja Chandravarma, the Kadamba king who was killed through deceit by the Pallava king, Sivaskandhavarma. Upon learning from his father's minister about his Kshatriya antecedents and his illustrious lineage, Mayura dedicates himself to throw the Pallava (foreign) yoke and liberate his motherland. Returning to Banavasi in the guise of a merchant called Nilakanthagupta, Mayura builds a following and an army. Through clever strategies, he conquers both Banavasi and the Telugu speaking regions around Srishaila, thus building a vast kingdom.
While the film builds the rivalry between Vishnugopa and Mayura, it also throws light on the mutually admiring friendship between Mayura and the Pallava crown prince (Srinath) and also on the growing love between Mayura and the Pallava princess Premavati (Manjula). In the end, Vishnugopa overcomes his anger and hatred towards Mayura, who marries Premavati, with the blessings of Sivaskandhavarma himself.

I thank god thousand times for giving me birth in Kannada nadu...Mayura King is pride of Karnataka so as Dr. Rajkumar, Mayura fought back & got the Kannada Kingdom captured from Pallavas(Tamil kingdom)....Rajanna is the Best actor in the world...I bet no one in the world performed so well in all characters like Rajanna, yet he was so simple, down to earth, never looked at what money he was earning. My mother tongue is Konkani but I am a proud kannadiga...I feel Kannadigas should be proud of their history & stop speaking Hindi in colleagues, offices etc., don't be bucket of other languages & feel more proud like how Tamils feel about their history.... This movie was dubbed into Telugu as Mahaveera Mayura. I remember only one scene in the film. A sword fight in a palace. Rajkumar is a legend, who could sing his own songs. We, Telugus, even if we have legends like NTR, ANR, Krishna and Shobhan Babu admire this Kannada legend. But unfortunately his movies are not dubbed into Telugu and other Indian Languages. Even the Karnataka Govt can take this responsibility for
(1) to showcase Kannada culture, customs and traditions
(2) the ministry of tourism can show case tourist spots of the beautiful Karnataka state through his movies.
(3) We, Indians can take pride in our UNITY AND DIVERSITY, through his large variety of movies.
(4) We can get to see the most beautiful Kannada heroines on screen like B, Saroja Devi, Bharati, Manjula, Kannada Manjula of whom we Telugus are also equally proud of.
It is known that Rajkumar acted in only one Telugu Movie, a classic called KALAHASTHI MAHATYAM as a devotee of Lord Shiva, the songs of which are popular in AP even till today.

I cant understand why some people deliked this. It is one of the best movie i have seen. Best acting as well as screen play. May be some Tamlians did not like it because movie is about historic win of Kannada ruler against well established Tamil ruler.

I had seen this film (dubbed in telugu) in my native place in my teens. One of the most memorable films of my life.The film is superb. The acting of Dr Rajkumar is unforgettable . Though I had seen a lot of Janapada films but it stands out alone in my memory. The acting of all the actors are mesmirising. Hats off to the Director.

This roles inspired by Rajamouli and did bahubali film ....Only two enemy characters through out the film in bahubali......But in mayura full story is based on the kingdom of kadambas & pallavas......super film ....In Indian Cinema industry not even a single actor didn't done like this film except Rajkumar...... Rajkumar is the genius actor......
