If you're a newcomer to NIN I'd recommend 2013's "Hesitation Marks" as the easiest album to get into starting fresh, it is very modern sounding and fits in the best with current electronic/ rock genres; or if you like the 80s style of this song then the entire "Pretty Hate Machine" album is a great start too. All albums are good though, each have a different sound/vibe in them and have a lot of depth. Try out each one if you want. Also "The Fragile" has aged very well and fits in with the electonic/rock genres like I mentioned above, sorry for long edit, there are just so many good albums for different reasons, enjoy!

Hi, Victoria! Welcome to the Nine Inch Nails experience! I would suggest taking your time with their songs because some people might find them harsh on the ears, but it's all worth it!
This song is such a classic. I can remember the first time hearing it when I was 6 years old. All these nuanced details are clear in my head from that moment. Now I'm 40 and I'm playing it to my 6 year old daughter for the first time. NIN for life.
actually it was perfectly IN it time. Trent just .. erm... poppified it, made is palatable to a wider audience (which seems like a weird thing to say, given it's a band like NiN.) Working with Flood helped with that, as did Adrian Sherwood. In the same way that Nirvana working with Butch Vig took grunge mainstream.
@@AlIguana except he was apparently ripping off Skinny Puppy. Early indistrial is Throbbing Gristle, Front 242, Frontline Assembly etc. you’re talking about post-industrial. Original industrial sounds nothing like NIN
1989 ladies and gentlemen. This is when this came out, anyone recall how different this sounded to anything else out there? I was completely blown away when I saw the video on "Headbangers Ball" on MTV for the first time. I think 1990. The video was like from another planet. The trash on the drums, the Maxheadroom Skull rotating. The tape all over the guitars, the cables all over the floor. The entire look took 'industrial' over the top. The sidecut hair of Finck and Reznor. In 1989. Hollywood celebs started sporting sidecuts in 2009, about 20 years later.
This was fr in 89? I thought maybe this was preteens for me. I was thinking... I would say this... That this is late MTV. Mtv2, prob late muchmusic? 🤔🤷 89? Damn, I was 7. I only remember hearing the song. I don't remember him ever having dreads or watching this. I personally always though that I'm afraid of Americans was a bit annoying... I remember this giraffe liked that song.
It completelly blew me away! I have always loved hard rock and metal, but I completely fell in love with this style of music. I have been a fan of NIN since day one!

And I played him Wish... kind of freaked him out a bit... post apocalyptic and all.. no more boy band crap. We saw nin a few times together. Allman Bros. Weve seen Clutch a dozen times. Motorhead. We disagree on a lit of stuff. But we talk and debate for hours. Hes my only child. So I worked at being big brother as well as father. The bro part is way easier.
I bought Pretty Hate Machine initially just for this song in the early nineties (on audio cassette!!) after hearing it on an episode on Beavis and Butthead. I've bought everything Reznor has ever done since. "Hey Beavis, do you have a nine inch nail?"
Saw Trent for the first time being interviewed on Much Music (in Canada) New Year's Eve 89/90. Never heard his music, but thought he seemed interesting and thoughtful. THEN they played the music video for HEAD LIKE A HOLE and by the time we got to the first "Bow down before the one you serve" I was a fan for life.
tyrantpictures if you're reading this on a cellphone moo.g. e forwarded information fall asleep to his work. Moog synthesizers and lyrics are purposefully worded for repairing a incognitionve dissonance area
This so much takes me back to the days when MTV focused on music instead of “reality” TV and irrelevant celeb drama. Not only that, they used to play excellent innovative alternative and even industrial music like this!
MTV also had a late show with this guy named John Stewart. I was like, man - this is one of the most intelligent guys I've ever seen. I do hope he makes it in Hollywood; his content is just too good and intellectual. They usually cancel shows like his to put up mindless big-titz dance + beach party shows. I do hope we see him again on another channel!

I introduced my step-son to this song 10 years ago. I was 50 and he was 15. He was slack-jawed and bug eyed and mesmerized by it. His mother and I split up many years ago but he and remain close and we still enjoy this song together,
He was over yesterday. He clicked on his phone and asked "Hey, what song is this?" I recognized it immediately and had it cranked on my big ass stereo system within seconds. We may not be related by blood, but I raised him better than his mother ever could and stuck with her for longer than I should have for his sake. We have enriched each others lives. Not just music. You can't choose your relatives but you can choose your family. Bless you JCB.

So true, he is a perfectionist. Weaving every sound, every note. Ha ha, my son & I discretely took our picture in front of his house (from across the street) in New Orleans back in the day. Wow, so long ago. I am 61 now. The first concert I took my son to when he was 15 was NIN & David Bowie.
This was when there was a message in music, its a somerimes declining era, of finding the focuse and raw necessity to bring it with full potential to expression and set rock on fire, i will always love
This song is as relevant today as it was back in 1989. Nine Inch Nails was a band that was way ahead of its time. It was dangerous, scary, exciting, and all of the above.
I held off on Nine Inch Nails until a few years into their fame because I've never hopped on bandwagons, or try not to. As soon as I heard Pretty Hate Machine it was pretty much on repeat from then forward. Quality music.
I miss all these bands I grew up. NiN nirvana rage against the machine filter..the music was so original and it spoke to everyone in some way or form. This was our therapy as teens. I listened to my folks music and I want my kids to see who my favorite rock bands were and the messages they spoke through their songs. It shows what they believed in. I watched rage in 93 and you can feel the energy of the band and the crowd. I hope their memories never die. Concerts were amazing. Sorry I'm reminiscing lol.
This was my first NIN song back in 1990 and it's completely defined my personal aesthetics and music tastes. The only thing I'll add to that is that the live version will always pump me up to max levels of energy.
Totally. NIN headlined a festival in Australia in 95… they took up twice the space on stage as all other act’s and we waited for age’s. Most electrifying and life affirming act I’ve ever seen!!! The acid helped a bit too
I finally saw that Black Mirror episode. I had almost forgotten about the fuss that some metalheads were making about the cover. I really thought it was great! I admit I used to hate Miley Cyrus, but now I understand her going to extremes to shed her Disney image. Now I respect her for what she's doing. She also did an excellent cover of Comfortably Numb. Also, I'm happy for shows like Black Mirror for using this music, cause what better way to get new fans.
Its not even close to a complete cover. It is, indeed with the same pop music sound with lyrics. but almost nothing but the chorus is the same at the rest of the song. brilliant though
I’m the opposite of most, I wasn’t a big fan of her music - covers aside, she had some good ones - but I thought what she was doing with her image was great. It gripped a whole new fanbase for her and insulted/annoyed everyone who deserved it. Her latest album has a few songs that have made it onto my playlist; so things are changing. There are a number of people who become hateful toward those who’ve really done nothing but become popular; they’ll figure out some moral outrage to justify their hatred - those sorts of people deserve to suffer with their anger; and society usually rewards them in kind - it’s not surprising that the judgmental types usually end up needlessly unhappy in life.
Is the logic based on the fact that Americans become massively stupid and blow their money on shit they don't need and run themselves in debt all in the name of Jesus? lol Or are you just sayin? lol
One of the most influential albums of all time (in the fucking 80s!). Trent's music had an epic cascading effect in music -- expanding on what new order was doing years earlier, fucking awesome.
Heard this when I was 12 back in 1990. Really broke open the door of what music is to me. It's been a long and awesome journey ever since. Music is everything.
A low-budget classic. Still remember the first time I saw this on 120 minutes - before MTV jumped the shark. It was this video that led to my buying Pretty Hate Machine.

1989? Talk about ahead of his fucking time!
@@tangledandfar none of the early industrial sounded anything like NIN tho
actually it was perfectly IN it time. Trent just .. erm... poppified it, made is palatable to a wider audience (which seems like a weird thing to say, given it's a band like NiN.) Working with Flood helped with that, as did Adrian Sherwood. In the same way that Nirvana working with Butch Vig took grunge mainstream.

Not sure I agree, the drums are extremely "late 80s", and akin to Depeche Mode or Gary Numan. The Downward Spiral sounds very much timeless though!

Her Cover of this, what they played was awesome. Her Pink Floyd Covers? Not so much.
