You know, of all the Gen 2 Monte’s I’ve personally been involved with over the years, I have never come across one with a center console! Every single one has been a bench seat car, so they must have sold a TON of the benches even though it’s a vehicle that pretty much cries out for a center console and shifter!

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp Год назад +1

@@ddellwo I've seen plenty with a floor shift and I went to college with a guy that had one, a 1977 with a 350 V8 and swivel buckets. He bragged about getting a NAPA distributor cap with brass terminals for "better spark". Too bad that those were available everywhere else. He'd put that "top quality" distributor cap on there, but the car had aluminum pool sides for floor boards. He was witty though. When asked what he wanted to do for work when we graduated, he said, "I want to be a mon back" When the counselor asked, "What's that?" He said, "Ya know the guy behind the truck waving the driver back saying 'Mon back.....keep comin', "Mon back". LOL.

@@ddellwo My Monte had storage in the center with a lid like a glove box that you could put things in. I bought it in Oct 77 when the 78s came out it had been a dealer demo with literally every option available. It was my first new car and had about 3,400 miles on it. There was a light gold demo with a cloth bench seat and a 350 4 barrel I wanted but it literally sold when I was test driving it. I liked the swivel buckets but I would have preferred the 350 4 barrel over the 305 2 barrel (the 350 was the fleet truck manager's demo). I had called all the surrounding dealers and only 1 dealer had 77 Montes. I liked the Pontiac Grand Prix and called the Pontiac dealers and none had any 77 Grand Prix left. I wanted the last of the big GM PLCs. I eventually got use to the downsized intermediates.

Just some more odd Automotive History!

Back in the late '80s or early '90s, I saw a news expose show on one of the major networks where they hired an older couple to drive a large RV around the country, while stopping for service on the RV at several shops located near major highways. The network also had their own team of mechanics, who verified the mechanical condition, and also set up small malfunctions to test the mechanics. Some shops fixed only the 'manufactured' malfunction, while others went beyond, doing work which was unnecessary in order to increase the bill. (Or even claiming to have done extra work which wasn't actually performed.) At the end, reporters confronted the dishonest shop owners. One of those shop owners was driving a '69 or '70 Grand Prix, and when he made his escape, I saw him reach down to put it in gear, and as he drove off I could hear that the GP had a manual transmission.

Similar point here on the radiator fan shroud- when the Cadillac Eldorado was restyled for '67, initially there was the possibility of a return to a 12 engine(at the design level); so if one looks at the fan shrouds for those, there's almost literally a short tunnel there, as they ended up scrapping the V12 idea & stayed with a V8. The fix for cooling was the add on fan shroud extension.

Hi Steve, another great video on the 1st and 2nd gen Monte Carlos. 1st was no question, a beautiful car. The 2nd gen took a while for me to embrace, but I've come to my senses. 😆 Around here, 30yr ago, it was common to see a 2nd gen set up with a "gangster lean" or jacked way up in the air all around. It's not like today's customized cars with the 30in rims, etc. These were set up on the biggest tires on 15in Chevy ralleys with about a ft or more of clearance added with blocks, etc. If you were riding behind one of them, the rear axle assembly and sway bar were definitely on display, and if it didn't have a factory sway bar well thats what JC Whitney catalog was for. I installed a ton of them on 'these rides' back in the day. Some had them so tight that they would bounce going down the rd. I'm sure they lost all that personal luxury ride. A fellow came to me with one, one day and asked if I could install a new fuel tank on his car, and what he brought to me was a chromed tank. I asked why? "You're not gonna be able to see it." His reply was "...if you get it high enough, you can!". So if anyone ever sees a 2nd gen Monte with a chrome fuel tank. Rest assured, it was installed correctly. LOL Namaste 🙏🏼

at 1:52 those wonderful Energy absorbing bumpers were a brilliant idea. I like the damage protection they offer and I do like the look of the extended bumpers on some cars. It WAS a great idea that did actually work very well.

I owned a 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo from 1991-2010. Mine was early build (September 1969) from the Flint Michigan plant. Mid year, they eliminated the trim piece on the front of the vinyl top and ran the top to the windshield moulding. Mine was “desert sand”(gold) with a black vinyl top and “sandlewood” interior. It was a 350 4 barrel and had A/C. I spent several years restoring the car. I got to enjoy it for several years before I sold it in 2010. I’ve owned 3 others over the years, 1978, 1979 and 1983 models.

I didn’t know that about the vinyl top trim. Mine was built the 3rd week of December 1969 in Van Nuys, California. It has the full halo. I’ve had it for 40 years now.

Great Monte Carlo video! The '70 is a an early '70 build from what I've heard/read from the Halo top trim. Same with the body color hubcaps. Sea mist green. You can see the trunk lid was replaced with the dark green one, the hinges are light green still. Man I sure would like that steering wheel for my '70.

In the 80’s I was driving my Dad’s 1973 LeSabre with the shock absorber bumpers. A drunk in an 80’s Monte Carlo SS rear ended me and destroyed the front end of his car while h the Buick was unscathed. Even though I was not at fault, I was so happy I didn’t have to answer for being out late and getting the car damaged. I wish they would bring those bumpers back!

Thank you so much Steve for this video! I had a 75 MC in the same blue metallic with the white Landau roof as the one in the video except I had a white interior with the swivel bucket seats. I had the 454 4 barrel which I believe was called the "Towing Package" because "SS" wasn't politically correct for those gas crunch times. I also had 15x8 Corvette steel wheels which looked like the factory 15x7 wheels but much better looking! Of course, I broke many spindles too because they were so much heavier! I'm 62 years old. I've owned several GTO's, Mustangs, a 2006 Charger SRT, a 98 Trans Am WS6 (which I still own) and hands down my MC was my favorite car of all time. Thank you again!!!

@MrRamayr98 The 454 in a '75 Monte had to be exceedingly rare. The last year a 454 was available in a Chevelle (Malibu) or even Corvette was 1974. I remember reading about that long before the internet existed.
I even thought Steve was mistaken when he said '75 was that "last year of the 454" at the beginning of the video.

The videos of 5mph bumpers in action are fascinating. If that tech could be integrated today, my car maybe wouldn't need front and rear bumper covers. I've been hit twice in parking lots.

I think back to late 90s early 2000, my brother and I both ran circle track dirt stock cars, he used Monte Carlos and I used buick body's, boy I realized we tore up many nice cars, my last one was a buick gn with 48000 miles on it from north Carolina, I wish we had the cars we gutted to make stock cars, most of them where daily drivers until we got a hold of them

Back in my high school days a friend and I were screwing around in his dad's Monte Carlo. The speedometer needle somehow got stuck when it was maxed out at 120mph! We were doing everything a couple of stupid teens could think of to remedy the situation. In the end when his dad asked how it happened we responded truthfully, "I dunno".

I checked that 75 out in search of a tilt column a while back. It had a funny narrow path to get down to it. A "crawl" indeed. Crawled deeper on the other end near the sand pit to check out a Grand prix same vintage. Struck out on both, but fun to see all the stuff along the way. Keep up the good work Steve!
