I remember watching some of the zoom performances on Rob's channel and just feeling excited, really wanted to see more of him. It's hard because he was in the group for SO. LONG.
The contest was just his gateway. There were plenty of people who won in various categories.. but the reason he's still with Starkid today is due to his talent, coupled with his sheer force of will once the competition was over.
