+mykaskin little bit different when flanking bend compared to this, flanking the point. When flanking bend, head is closer to bank and stern is further to the river.

Yes. I use engines and rudders to make adjustments as needed. How I get set up, dictates how much I have to adjust. Each bend is different every time made.

Ya know it would be kinda cool if you had two cameras running on a bend like this one or one of bridge slides maneuvers if you could figure out how to do a picture in a pictures with the big picture looking out front and the small inset of the chart plotter and probably run the entire clip a fast forward. +RVJimD Great ideas, but I'm a few steps ahead of you. 😉 I have quite a few projects in edit that have multiple camera angles, even drone shots. Most of my youtube stuff is not my best work, at all. It's my hobby. I post a lot of these raw, or with very little editing, usually on my iMovie phone app. I'll start getting some teasers out in coming months, on some of the stuff I'm working on for film festivals.
Not real sure, but I’d say a full set, (no need to carry all at one time), probably around 125-200 lbs. for ratchet, strap, 35’wire. If you can move a fifty pound weight, you will do fine. You don’t need to be “Hulk”, but it is very physical labor. Working at a steady pace for 6 hours is more important than feats of strength. Most of my job starting out was just lifting a mop and broom. I get enjoyment from all aspects of the job. Good attitude and good work ethic will get you where you want in this industry. I wish you well on your river career/journey.
Brings back fond memories catching Baton Rouge S/B on the Sierra Dawn(WBL/Artco).Calling traffic control and hang on.Only we didn't call it Wilkerson Point.It was known as Free something or other years ago.Ha.
Yep that's right.We'd call it in as such,or similar lingo and traffic control would always respond:roger,S/B at Wilkerson point.I'd heard several similar stories about it.Most were that near the end of the civil war,a plantation owner freed several slaves there.Thanks for posting the videos.Brings back fond memories from many good trips from 1978-1991.
Why don't you take the center span instead of waiting for the head to come all the way around to the right span is that where the channel is great job very interesting to watch
Great video capt, just curious. What made you decide to solely become a trip pilot versus being full time at a company. I've been on the river 5+ years and have my sights set on the wheelhouse and know that trip pilots kinda negotiate their own pay, is that why?
@@marktwained I watched a heavy tow lost his ass half way through his flank one time spun real quick and backed through that center span . River stage that day was about 42 or so. It was something to see. Alter barge line boat I believe it was. Around 1991 or 92.

You've got the moves, like Jagger! While flacking, do have any power on? I'm thinking slow astern to keep the back on the inside of the bend...

Kyle Jordan freedom of schedule an better money are the main reasons. Port captain's ask me to do stuff instead of tell me to do stuff also.
