San Diego's First Organics Waste Collection!

  • Week 1 collection of San Diego’s Residential Organic Waste Program officially kicked off January 18th in the Logan Heights area just east of downtown. Multiple new Rapid Rails saturated the area with drivers getting an understanding of their brand new routes along with recycle coordinators riding shotgun checking as many organic bins as possible to ensure a smooth start. As I was driving around the area, I’d say around 75% of houses chose not to put their green cart out, but the 25% who did had a bunch of clean green or food waste in their carts which was great to see. I was out for an hour and I only saw one cart get rejected due to contamination. ESD is continuing on with the aggressive education campaign. If residents filled their carts with clean material but their kitchen caddy was still attached, the recycle coordinators would cut it off and place it next to the cart. Any carts that looked like they hadn’t been moved since delivery were taken note of as well.
    Thanks to Mario and Andrea for allowing me to record! Hope you guys find this!

    So glad you caught this! Glad to see most people participating are doing it the right way. Never thought the city would go out of there way to send people and inspect that carts, that's what I call due diligence in compliance.

      Thanks Andres! The city wants this to be as successful as possible so it's all about education education education. This area didn't even have green waste service so it'll take some time for residents to get use to.

    What a fantastic way to kick of the New Year for ESD! I do love me a good ESD video and this one takes the cake. It does seem like the driver has gotten the hang (mostly) of the Rapid Rail. I honestly prefer these over their Amreps because they are Autocars (yay!), they look awesome with the yellow arm, green signboard and blue stripe, and they place the carts back so nicely (lids closed, not thrown all over the place). Not to mention, those Green 35 EG’s look superb. Great Work!!

    • @zp12684
      @zp12684  Год назад +1

      Thanks Josh! I love that they chose Autocars too. I'm not sure if the drivers that came over from an Amrep can say they love the Rapid Rail but hopefully with time, they grow accustom to them. It's going to be hard to find a truck in a neighborhood now, can't rely on the lids to be open haha.

    Nice work! Sad to see that the days are manual greens days are now numbered, one of the last truly manual routes left in the city. To my knowledge, laJolla Still has some manual yard waste collection due to the landscape. REAL strange to see Heils comming from ESD, and not something meant for organics, like a RotoPac. The blue stripes are a bit odd, to see! IM also super happy to hear that they are having inspectors ride Shotgun to check carts! My city needs that! Great work as always!

    • @zp12684
      @zp12684  Год назад

      I think everyone was shocked to see ESD choose Heil! Now that you mention it, the RotoPac would have been a good truck to demo, but I think the reason they didn't buy it was becasue they want to be able to run the truck on all 3 routes, if needed. Right now, a majority of these trucks are only dedicated to organics on Wednesday and go wherever needed during the rest of the week. Of course that will change when Wednesday is rolled out. I think green stripes would have been more appropriate, but that's just me lol. Thanks Jay!

    Glad to see you were able to get this video up promptly! San Diego sure is doing it right, nice to see the driver and "helper" worked well together. I'd think another body like a Labrie with a thinner arm to reach in between carts and grab the smaller EGs better would've made this more efficient, but I'd hope that once this route becomes a regular, and the drivers break these trucks in, time on route will decrease. Know how long they were on route this day? Going into the future I'll be curious if resident use of the green carts go up, and if City of SD keep up their contamination enforcement. Thanks for documenting this process!

    • @zp12684
      @zp12684  Год назад +1

      Gotta get it up fast for Andrea and Mario lol. Labrie or New Way would have been the way to go on the trucks. I don't know how long they were out that day, I'm sure it couldn't have been past 3. It was mostly getting drivers use to the equipment and how to run the routes, as well as the recycling coordinators checking the carts that were out.

      Come on down and film some manual! They say they expect it to go all automated in July but I don't see that happening with the sheer amount of carts being rolled out. And agreed, I don't think they could have picked a worse truck, especially in the space constrained Wednesday and Thursday routes. Thanks!

      @@zp12684 I'm on the Wednesday route and on the first Greens pickup for February, I started talking with the loader when he finished my house. He said that they are getting rid of the full size Pak Mors but will be keeping the minis for the narrower streets (and I assume alleyways, etc.). My street is not a narrow one but there are some tight fits close by. Also, I was hoping that since we are close to the landfill/recycle center that maybe we will get the mini Pak Mors due to their smaller capacity and need to unload more often. But after seeing this video, I am sort of resigned to the thought that this new truck will be what we end up with because I saw one cruise down the block while I was in the kitchen yesterday. That was the first day (3/1) of the new Greens collection for our area. Last week was the final week for the every other week Greens schedule and we had a mini Pak Mor on the route. So I was hoping that it would be back this week. I never saw which truck actually collected the Greens since we only had 2 houses on the block put the bins out. Maybe when the dust settles the Mini Pak will be back!

    I like this area, you’ll notice some of the homes are built in a Victorian style instead of the tan Spanish style that you see everywhere else in SD. Very underrated filming spot. I think the rapid rails will do ok on food waste and trash, but I think they will learn the hard way that these trucks just perform very poorly on recycle and yard waste routes with lots of palm fronds. Funny they couldn’t just have the driver inspect the bins and take a few pics, very typical city way of doing things. Looks like my window on filming manual greens is closing pretty quickly…

    Still a bit rare to see Rapid Rails back in SD! I still don’t understand why they decide to either sand or paint over the heil logos on the mudflaps… It doesn’t look “authentic” if you will. I do support strong aggressive enforcement methods that will allow for more proper education rather then just doing the tag as you go thing considering you rely on the public to read the tag and half of them don’t. What’s the purpose of recording the cycle occur? Very neat.
