    That's the genius of George Harrison. He always thought with chords, even when he was soloing. With all due respect, Mr. Guitar Pilgrim, but I disagree with you when you say he wasn't a virtuoso like Clapton or Hendrix. I think he was a virtuoso on his own and had a knowledge about harmony far superior than Hendrix or Clapton. Take his early years, back on Ed Sullivan's show: All My Loving, 'Till There Was You... all those chords in between the solo. I don't know, I'd really like to hear you talk more about it because I think you're very knowledgeable. Maybe a video about using chords on solos? Who knows! heheh Cheers, man!

    • @craniofacialsurgeon
      @craniofacialsurgeon 4 года назад +3

      Eric - spot on. Chordal solos... take a look at the Pilgrim's video on Scotty Moore. This, together with Carl Perkins and Chet Atkins, is where George Harrison began

    • @ronnienaidoo3249
      @ronnienaidoo3249 3 года назад

      Eric : I agree with you 100%. George was an absolute Genius/Virtuoso !!! Clapton & Hendrix knew nothing about harmony. The Beatles three-part harmonies is so unique in their songs.

  • @augustdaye2746
    @augustdaye2746 4 года назад +48

    I've heard Paul in a few interviews talking about the concept of "contrary motion" - one line of melody going up or down against a theme doing the reverse - with some enthusiasm. George was always more of a chord tone soloist rather than a scales player. Guitar Pilgrim right on the money again.

    • @peterveld1385
      @peterveld1385 4 года назад +3

      That's absolutely true August, in fact his very first song I Lost My Little Girl has contrary motion where the melody goes up and the chords on the guitar are G, G7 and C with the notes on the 1ste string G, F and E, thus going down....

    • @itslikethesamebutdifferent8020
      @itslikethesamebutdifferent8020 4 года назад +4

      You’re right, George was mostly a chord soloist. One of the best examples being All My Loving. Many people say George wasn’t a flashy virtuoso type of player, and he wasn’t, but his solos are a bit trickier to learn than say a Hendrix, Clapton, Page or Blackmore solo.

    • @ralphcordon5688
      @ralphcordon5688 3 года назад

    Harrison is so underrated because he's not flashy. What he does on a song like Dear Prudence is absolute genius, so perfect, and yet people don't think of it as great because it doesn't stand out in the mix. But on it's own, it's incredibly haunting, especially as he plays against John's rhythm part. For me at least. Dig a Pony is another one, where's it's even harder to appreciate because it wasn't recorded in a studio.

    The Beatles in Germany in the early 60's, had to play in beer joints, where rowdy patrons, got in fights, threw beer bottles and screamed for more and more, which meant that the Beatles, had to fight back, with a more energetic response and captivation, to hold the interest of their wild and captive audiences, so they non stop improvised just to save their own selves. Doing this night and day, 24/7 they became the tightest most electrifying group on the planet. So when they returned to Liverpool, they were unstoppable and unbeatable. This is what gave them the power to deliver and the strength to endlessly record one song after the other for their first 4 albums, until they settled into throwing all they had into their recordings. They worked hard to earn their appreciation from fans right across the world, never letting them down. Also, 'A Day In The Life' with its ominous ending, showcased the end should a Nuclear Bomb go off, as that was one of the major topics of the day. No one comes close. The Rolling Stones whom I love too, couldn't come close either, just listen to the Stones trying to do 'Come Together', they didn't even come close to giving the original song its due, nor did Michael Jackson or Aerosmith. They were the best. The only other musical entertainer that has equal rights in this regard is Elvis Presley.

    Thanks for your brilliant views & assessment of a beautiful classic song which could have been another Number 1 Hit should it have been released as a single like with so many Beatle classics that weren't released as singles.

    I heard McCartney say when he was a teenager he liked the sound of ascending and descending chord or note progression at the same time.. he was very aware of what he was doing

    I have a deeper connection to abbey road than any other album. To me it’s the most complete Beatles album that explores a multitude of themes and just has an X factor of coolness that makes me able to listen to it every day of my life. When I heard Paul McCartney begin golden slumber live I just totally lost it. I’m not sure anything else could have an effect like that on me
