Post Op: Third week short update
This is my third week post-op and still not feeling great, although it’s slightly better than the first 2 weeks. But based on the illustration related to nerve pain, it seems like I’m still having C5 and C7 nerve pain on my left shoulder and arm.
I’m still dependent on pain medication. During the day, I’m taking Paracetamol 1g.
At dinner, I take Paracetamol 500mg-Codeine 30mg. Before bedtime, I take 10mg Diazepam (muscle relax) Lormetazepam 2mg (sleep). Some nights I will wake up from pain and take another 1g Paracetamol.
It’s still a struggle to get proper sleep. And getting in and out of bed is the biggest challenge.
NOTE: Post Op First & Second week updates are posted in 2 earlier comments.

This is the best personal experience video I’ve watched about this. Thank you for sharing it. I have ACDF surgery for c5-c6 and c6-c7 scheduled next month. I, too, have severe osteoarthritis in my neck, feet, and hands, as well as degenerative disc disease in my lumbar region.

I hope your acdf surgery went well, I had mine done at just one level c5-6 and it has been nearly three weeks since I had it done. The days after the surgery in hospital and the week at home after the surgery was the most painful but after 1-2 weeks the pain is alot better. I am still recovering and taking it easy for the next few months. A daily walk helped me feel better and helps with recovery

I’m sorry to hear that you are going through the same pain as I have. I hope you will recover soon. I have just been to my doctor this morning to remove the stitches. The wound looks a bit swollen but is healing well. I only wish that the pain on the neck and shoulders can go away quickly. Take care!

    Post Op: Second week update
NOTE: Post Op First week update is posted in an earlier comment.
    1. Week 2 Day 1 - woke up with less pain in the neck, but more pain on both shoulders and upper arms. Took Paracetamol-Codeine after breakfast. Had diarrhoea again in the morning. No more diarrhoea for the rest of the day. Still difficult night with shoulder pain.
    2. Week 2 Day 2 - woke up with stiff neck and pain on both shoulders, down to the forearms; still felt like nerve pain. Forgot to mention that swallowing issues were gone by the end of week 1 post op. Occasionally unable to burp, I can feel a gulp of air being stuck at the throat.
    3. Week 2 Day 3 - couldn’t sleep properly last night due to pain in left shoulder and arm. By analysing the illustration related to nerve pain, it seems like I’m having C5 and C7 nerve pain on my left shoulder and arm. There’s also some pain on my right, but not so much as the left. Tomorrow I will see my GP to remove the stitches. I hope I can have an answer for the pain.
    4. Week 2 Day 4 - terrible, painful night again. Still can’t function without Paracetamol and Codeine. Stitches are removed this morning and the wound looks a bit swollen but is healing well. I only wish that the pain on the neck and shoulders can go away quickly. My doctor will discuss with my Neurosurgeon on Monday (27 November) if I still have so much pain after this weekend.
Today is 10 days after my surgery, I went out for my first outdoor walk. Managed to walk 1.8km in 43 minutes, it was a slow start but it felt like a great achievement!
    5. Week 2 Day 5 - Same pain at night. I don’t look forward to bedtime anymore.
    6. Week 2 Day 6 - No improvement yet. I hope to go out for a short walk once it stops raining.
    7. Week 2 Day 7 - I don’t want to be negative, there’s nothing new to report today. I will focus on my recovery now and will make a video about my recovery journey. Thank you for all your support! Take care.

    Post Op: First Week Updates
    1. Post Op Day 1 - still in hospital: very difficult first night with lots of pain in the neck and shoulders.
    2. Post Op Day 2 - discharged from hospital: still a lot of pain, plus swallowing issues and coughing regularly, but able to eat soft bread, yogurt and soup. Note:
    * Given a pair of compression socks to put on before the surgery, and must continue to wear it 24-hours daily for the next 10 days.
    * Getting in and out of bed is the biggest challenge.
    * Strangely, it’s not a requirement for me to wear a neck collar. The nurses told me it’s necessary to move my neck and body carefully within the next 6 weeks.
    * But not allowed to exert any force nor carry anything heavier than a 1L bottle of water.
    * Avoid using stairs as that can create shocks to my neck!
    3. Post Op Day 3 - same pain as day 2, but more coughing during the night. Could be due to the colder weather
    4. Post Op Day 4 - still the same pain, had 2 slices of bread and yogurt for breakfast, followed by diarrhoea this morning. Diarrhoea after lunch and dinner, had to take Imodium.
    5. Post Op Day 5 - lots of pain during the night, got up around midnight to take a muscle relaxer pill (Diazepam 5mg). No more diarrhoea after breakfast and lunch today. Pain is manageable during the day, simply moving around from room to room, combination of sit / stand and laying down on the couch.
    6. Post Op Day 6 - still lots of pain, very difficult to sleep. Took Diazepam before going to bed. I spread out timings for intake of Paracetamol every 6 hours, including the night (over 24-hours).
    7. Post Op Day 7 - managed to sleep with muscle relaxing and sleeping pills. Woke up with lots of pain, had to take Paracetamol-Codeine again at breakfast. The plaster over the wound is causing irritation on the skin around my neck and it’s itchy. Went to my doctor, but was advised not to use a new plaster as it’s causing irritation on my skin. It needs to be kept dry for the next few days until the stitches are removed.

I’m so sorry to hear that you are still in pain 2-years post surgery. I hope it’s not affecting your nerves, what advice did you receive from your neurosurgeon? Are you going for physical therapy? Physiotherapy treatments have helped me a lot. I’m recovering well, with minimum pain. Swallowing issues were gone within the first 48 hours post-op. I wish you a speedy recovery. Take care!

My partner is going for the ops on 3rd june. C4-C6 .. causes by degeneration and bone spurs... really worrying ... we will have a consultation 3 days before the surgery.... what should we ask and should be aware of .. pls advise 🙏🏻

    • @monaliceke
      @monaliceke  5 месяцев назад +1

I understand how you feel. Most likely your partner will need to do a blood test and complete some documentation for admission to the hospital. Please follow the doctor’s advice and your partner will be fine. Speaking from my own experience, the surgery was necessary to treat my condition and it was successful. Don’t worry, everything you need to know will be explained to you by the neurosurgeon. Your partner will recover very soon. Take care!

Thank you Alice for the encouragement.
Seeing your other vids and knowing you're getting healthier and stronger definitely makes me feel positive.... but somehow the fear for my partner surgery's just don't go away😢
Nothing we can do but will keep praying 🙏🏻 for the success like yours.
